Researchers found the earliest known chopsticks at the Yin Ruins in Henan province, dating back to around 1200 BC during the Shang Dynasty. According to the research, these bronze (青铜的) chopsticks were not used for eating at that time. They were long, reaching 26 cm, and people used them to reach deep into pots to stir and mix food.
However, around 2,000 years ago, during the Han Dynasty, a great change took place. As the Han Dynasty developed, people from the south began eating more rice, which is easy to pick up with two sticks. In the north, wheat became more common, leading to noodles and dumplings, which are easier to eat with chopsticks. The ideas of some thinkers, such as Confucius, also helped promote (促进) the use of chopsticks as eating tools. In their opinion, using knives at the dinner table would remind people of killing, while chopsticks would not.
By around 500 AD, chopsticks had spread (传播) from China to Korea, Japan, and other Asian countries. In each new place, chopsticks changed a lot. For example, in Japan, people lived near the sea, and fish was their main food. Therefore, they made their chopsticks shorter and pointed (尖锐的) at the ends, which were perfect for eating fish.
Actually, the Chinese name of chopsticks also changed over time. At first, people called them “zhu”, which was a homophone (同音异形词) of the word “stop”—a bad sign for boatmen. Later, they began to call the chopsticks “kuai” (sounding like “fast”), hoping for a safe and fast journey.
From a simple tool to a symbol of culture, the chopstick’s journey shows how one small object can change and grow, connecting people across time and distance.
The Changes of Chopsticks
Changes in 1 :
· Around 1200 BC during the Shang Dynasty, chopsticks are long, and people considered them as 2 .
· During the Han Dynasty, people used them to eat because of changes in their eating 3 and the 3 of some thinkers’ ideas.
Changes in different countries:
· By around 500 AD, chopsticks had spread to different Asian countries, and they changed a lot in each new place.
◎ For example, in Japan, people changed chopsticks’ 4 to fit local needs.
Changes in name:
· At first, chopsticks were called “zhu”, but because its 5 was linked to “stop”—a bad sign for boatmen, people later changed the name to “kuai”.

新时代货币|难度:★★☆(中等)
话题:社会生活|考点:细节定位、词性转换、概括
Money has changed a lot over the past years. It used to be something we could hold in our hands, but now, it’s mostly numbers on our phone screens or computer screens in banks. It is true that the change from cash to e-payment has made our lives a lot easier. However, it has also brought some new challenges or made some old problems clearer.
Let’s take the UK as an example. In the country, nearly sixty percent of the children aged 8 to 17 spend money online every month. Nearly half of them have ever faced online scams (诈骗), though only nine percent of them have actually lost money. Many also often regret (后悔) what they have bought online. Without cash, they no longer feel the pain of spending money, and it’s not difficult for them to pay at all. That can be especially risky for children who lack self-control. They may spend too much on something they don’t actually need.
Are schools preparing young people for dealing with these risks? Sadly, the answer is no. Over half of British students leave school without meaningful financial (金融的) education. They know little about modern problems such as online scams or in-game spending. What’s more, many students can’t get enough financial guidance when they need to make important financial decisions.
The British government suggests introducing financial courses in primary schools from 2028. However, financial learning doesn’t only take place in schools. In fact, a lot of it takes place elsewhere. Sharing different opinions about the topic with family members and friends can help, too. Young people can even learn from short videos about money management.
So would you like to learn how to manage money wisely? You can start by talking with your parents or teachers to get advice.

话题:教育与文化传承|考点:对比信息、归纳总结
In a school in Qamdo, Xizang, the sound of reading is not the only thing one can hear. Sometimes, there is music for Tibetan Xianzi dance. Sometimes, there is the soft sound of a drone (无人机) rising into the air.
Qamdo Experimental Primary School has a long history. More than 70 years ago, its early classrooms were built in simple rooms in an old temple (寺庙). At that time, many children in the area had few chances to receive modern education. There weren’t any formal teaching materials (材料) and teachers had to visit families to encourage parents to send their children to school.
Today, the school looks very different. It has electronic (电子的) whiteboards, future classrooms and clubs for science and technology. In the drone club, students learn how to control small flying machines. One student said that flying a drone helped him imagine the mountains and rivers outside his hometown. Another student hoped to become a scientist and improve drone technology one day.
But the school has not forgotten tradition. Students can learn Tibetan calligraphy, paper-cut, traditional musical instruments and Xianzi dance. A fourth-grade girl said she liked Xianzi because she could dance with her friends. For her, culture was not something far away in a museum. It was something she could move with, hear and enjoy.
The school shows that modern education does not have to leave tradition behind. A child can learn coding (编程) in one classroom and dance to music in another. A drone can help students look toward the future, while a traditional song reminds them where they come from.
When education creates a bridge between the old and the new, students not only get knowledge. They also develop confidence and curiosity about the wider world.

北极变暖|难度:★★★☆(较难)
话题:环境科普|考点:数字换算、概念理解、推理
From the moment you open your eyes in the morning, you can feel sweat(汗水)running down your body, even if you’re hardly moving at all. That’s what most people in China felt like last summer. In fact, the whole northern hemisphere(北半球)saw high temperatures last July.
The Arctic was no exception. Temperatures in the city of Norilsk, which is in the Arctic Circle, reached a record high of 32℃. Temperatures there are usually just 10℃ at this time of the year.
The heat in the Arctic is mainly a long-term result of global warming. In fact, while the whole world is getting warmer, the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet. This is called the polar amplification effect(极地放大效应).
The most direct influence of Arctic warming is the melting(融化)of Arctic ice. According to NASA, Arctic sea ice is now disappearing at a speed of 13.2 percent every 10 years. NASA said that if this continues, the Arctic will have no ice by the year 2040.
This has put some Arctic animals, like polar bears, in danger. The ice that the bears live on has shrunk (缩小).
Melting ice can also cause sea level to rise in the long term. Since 1993, sea level has risen at a speed of 3.2 cm every 10 years. Some countries, such as Tuvalu in the South Pacific Ocean and Maldives in the Indian Ocean, are at risk of disappearing into the sea.
Facts:
▶The whole northern hemisphere saw high temperatures last summer.
▶The temperature of Norilsk, a city in the Arctic Circle, was about 22℃ 1 than usual.
2 :
▶It is mainly caused by the long-term global warming.
▶The polar amplification effect 3 the Arctic’s warming speed.
The 4 in the Arctic
Influences:
▶Arctic ice may melt gradually until it completely disappears by 2040.
▶Some Arctic animals have become 5 .
▶Some countries are at risk of disappearing into the sea because sea level is rising rapidly.

英国超市的影响|难度:★★★★(偏难)
话题:社会思辨|考点:逻辑转换、长难句拆解、概括归纳
The British love their supermarkets. And there are more and more of them every year. But is this a good thing?
Not necessarily. For a start, many small shops can’t compete on price with superstores such as Tesco and Marks & Spencer. And they don’t have as many products, either. As a result, many local businesses have closed. In fact, between 1990 and 1996, 36% of the UK’s small shops shut down. And between 1986 and 1997, the number of supermarkets increased from 457 to 1,102.
Supermarkets have a bad effect on local communities in other ways too. Money spent in small shops usually stays in the area. However, money spent at supermarkets is often put into the bank accounts of distant shareholders (股东), some of whom don’t even pay any taxes in the UK!
Supermarkets are also bad for animal welfare. The UK has high standards in this field, so some supermarkets get their meat from abroad. And in many cases, this meat is produced under conditions that would be illegal (非法的) in the UK. But once they’ve got the meat, supermarkets put a British flag on the product.
Dishonest? Not exactly, but it isn’t completely true either!
Supermarkets have a poor environmental record too. Many of them don’t store food products themselves as storage space is expensive, so they get food producers to do it for them. This means that supermarket lorries have to make more trips to collect supplies. In turn, this increases the amount of petrol (汽油) used. Supermarkets also use a lot of plastic packaging, which isn’t good for the environment, either.
Supermarkets are good news for shoppers looking for a bargain, but they’re definitely bad for local businesses, animals and the environment!
How supermarkets are 1 on Britain
For local businesses
▶Many small shops were shut down because of their higher prices and 2 .
▶Money spent in supermarkets doesn’t stay in the local area.
For animal welfare
▶ 3 meeting the high standards in the UK, supermarkets get meat from abroad and put a British flag on it.
For the 4
▶Supermarket lorries make more trips to collect food products, which 5 more pollution.
▶Supermarkets use a lot of plastic packaging.
