I’ll be honest: I’m not a science guy. Physics, for me, was mostly a fog of equations I tried to survive in school. But while reading Life 3.0 by Max Tegmark, I stumbled upon Fermat’s Principle — and it felt less like physics and more like a life lesson in disguise.
Tegmark explains it with a brilliant analogy. Imagine a lifeguard on a beach spotting a swimmer in trouble. She doesn’t take the straight line. Why? Because she runs faster on sand than she swims in water. So she runs farther down the beach first — covering more ground where she’s fast — then dives into the water at an angle. That bent, two-part path is the fastest. Light does the same: bending as it enters water, following the path of least time, not least distance.
This is where it clicked. Tegmark writes that the universe often behaves as if it’s optimizing something — minimizing energy, maximizing efficiency. It felt purposeful. Even if nature has no “goal,” its behaviour is goal-oriented.
It made me look at my own life. How often do I chase the path that looks shortest, only to find it’s the most draining? I used to promise myself that I would read an hour daily, which seemed to be the “straight-line” way, But I burned out by day three. The “Fermat” way is different: start small, reduce friction, bend your path to match the environment where your progress flows faster. You might run farther on sand before diving in, but you’ll reach your destination sooner.
The same applies to change. Whenever we try to change something, we often force confrontation: quit cold turkey, overhaul overnight, fix everything at once. But real change, like light, works better when it bends — when it adapts to the medium it moves through. Bending differently at work, at home is not weakness but wisdom.
Maybe the key to improving our lives bit by bit isn’t about more force or straight-line speed. Maybe it’s about paying attention to the medium we’re moving through — our time, mood, health, energy — and adjusting our angle. Because, as nature shows us, the optimal path is rarely the straight one.
4. What did the author think of physics initially?
A. It required genuine curiosity. B. It posed academic challenges.
C. It provided intellectual rewards. D. It contained philosophical insights.
5. What does the lifeguard story in paragraph 2 mainly explain?
A. The necessity of training for lifeguards. B. The methods of calculating running speed.
C. The mechanism of light refraction in water. D. The difference between jogging and swimming.
6. What sets the “Fermat” way apart from the author’s prior way?
A. Allowing minute changes. B. Highlighting direct methods.
C. Demanding strong willpower. D. Advocating dramatic progress.
7. Which of the following does the author most probably agree with?
A. Go with the flow. B. No pains, no gains.
C. A rolling stone gathers no moss. D. Still water runs deep.

If you’ve scrolled through your Facebook feed recently, you may have noticed something surprising: lots and lots of short videos.
What makes this “Reels” feature strange is that it is hugely addictive, which I know quite well from my own personal experience. Last Friday, I took a break and hit on one short clip of someone making dinner and, well, the next time I looked up it was 20 minutes later and the blank document on my computer monitor was confirming to me that my work was still not done.
However, as silly as it seems, Reels-is actually super important, and is at the centre of a major battle between the world’s largest tech firms. The format (格式) was first pioneered by TikTok-the Chinese-owned video app that has taken the world by storm since it launched in 2016. Today, TikTok has around 23 million UK users every month-including basically every person you know under the age of 25. And that fact has made Facebook and its parent company, Meta, very nervous indeed. As TikTok has continued to boom, Facebook has actually fallen in popularity among “Gen Z”. The reason Tik Tok has proven such a powerful challenger to Facebook’s social media dominance is almost entirely down to these sorts of short-form videos.
The format is almost perfectly optimised to be as addictive as possible: Tik Tok’s app shows you a short-form video, and if you don’t like it, you can simply swipe it away and another one will start playing instantly. And because it is portrait, not landscape, videos look “right” when viewed on your phone. What’s also smart is that TikTok’s algorithm (算法) picks videos for you based on what you actually watch, and not what you say you want.
Facebook isn’t the only app trying to do what TikTok does so well. Instagram, which is owned by Facebook’s parent company Meta, has integrated Reels even more aggressively into its app. And even Google is nervous, launching its own TikTok-style video section of YouTube(which it owns)a couple of years ago. As things stand, though TikTok currently maintains a healthy lead in the category, both YouTube and Facebook have deep pockets-so expect to see even more Reels and Shorts popping up in your feed as this intense battle continues to rage. You won’t be able to take your eyes off them.
8. Why did the author mention his own experience in paragraph 2?
A. To illustrate the feature of short videos.
B. To stress the importance of short videos.
C. To prove his preference to short videos.
D. To introduce the functions of short videos.
9. What do we know about TikTok according to the passage?
A. It has shown the trend of the fall in popularity among “Gen Z”.
B. It is perceived as a potential threat to Facebook’s social media dominance.
C. Its number of registered UK users has reached 23 million since it launched in 2016.
D. It underestimates the essential role of short videos in competition with large tech firms.
10. What makes the short videos on TikTok App so popular?
A. The beautiful visual effects.
B. The high video quality.
C. The random recommendation.
D. The quick switch between videos.
11. What is the message conveyed in the last paragraph?
A. The short videos have a profound impact on our daily life.
B. TikTok seems to be losing its advantage over short videos in the short run.
C. YouTube and Facebook may encounter financial difficulties in developing Shorts.
D. A growing number of tech firms have engaged in fierce competition for the short video market.

Plastic and cheap clothes are not a glorious legacy (遗产). But a scientist exploring which items from our technological civilization are most likely to survive for many millions of years as fossils (化石) has reached an ironic and instructive conclusion: Plastic and fast fashion will be our everlasting geological signature.
“Plastic will definitely be a signature ‘technofossil’, because it is incredibly tough, we are making massive amounts of it, and it gets around the entire globe,” says Sarah Gabbott, a University of Leicester expert on fossils. “So wherever those future civilizations dig, they are going to find plastic.”
Clothes will also make an abrupt entry into humanity’s fossil record. Today, the world’s growing population often wears mass-produced synthetic (合成的) clothing that are rapidly thrown away and they are not as easily decomposed as cotton and silk.
“We are making them in ridiculous amounts,” says Gabbott. We throw them into landfills (填埋场), which are like giant mummification tombs. It is already clear that much of modern fashion will end up being truly timeless.”
Fossils are not just objects left behind, but also the traces of life’s activity written into the rocks. Human activities, such as oil drilling and nuclear tests, will leave lasting scars. Humankind has also created many near-indestructible chemicals, such as dioxins and DDT. Given that similar molecules produced by bacteria have been found in rocks that are 1,600m years old in Western Australia, these chemicals appear to be here to stay. “And there is the graphite (石墨) used in pencils,” says Gabbott. “It is endearing to think that it may be the drawings of children that may survive best of all: a pencil portrait, perhaps, of a family outside a house, with the sun shining and a rainbow arcing across the sky,” she says jokingly.
“The big message here is that the amount of stuff we are now making is eye-watering — it’s off the scale,” says Gabbott. All of the stuff made by humans by 1950 was a small part of all the matter on Earth. But today it outweighs all plants and animals. “This raises serious questions for us all,” she says, “Do you need that? Do you really need to buy more?”
12. What does the author think of plastic and cheap clothes as a legacy?
A. Troubling. B. Short-lived.
C. Technologically weak. D. Environmentally harmless.
13. What can be categorized as “technofossils”?
A. Dinosaur bones. B. Cotton clothing. C. Nuclear waste. D. Silk clothes.
14. Why are “children’s drawings” mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To highlight human creativity.
B. To celebrate modern technology.
C. To stress that warmth of life is here to stay.
D. To indicate that chemicals could be fossilized.
15. What is Gabbott’s primary concern?
A. Biodiversity loss. B. Geological record accuracy.
C. Technological progress. D. Overproduction of material goods.

Picture a table surrounded by curious minds, each desiring to uncover the mysteries of the universe, as they start a journey of intellectual exploration through the art of challenging questions. The scene summarizes the essence of intellectual questions. ____16____ They’re the kind of questions that make you frown, scratch your head, and maybe even lose a little sleep.
____17____ For instance, as AI systems become increasingly complex, we’re forced to deal with some pretty mind-bending questions, like “Will AI ever achieve true consciousness?” or “Could it one day surpass human intelligence?” Environmental sustainability presents another set of urgent scientific questions: “How can we balance economic growth with environmental protection? Could we engineer our way out of a climate disaster?” Similarly, space exploration has fascinated humans for centuries. ____18____ We may wonder: “Could we one day settle on other planets?”
You might be wondering: “Why bother with all these heavy questions? Can’t we just enjoy a nice, light conversation about the weather?” Well, sure, we could. But where’s the fun in that?
Asking intellectual questions isn’t just a way to sound smart at dinner parties. When we engage with intellectual questions, we’re developing critical thinking skills, enhancing our ability to analyze complex issues, and broadening our understanding of the world. ____19____ And the benefits go beyond personal development. Engaging in intellectual questions can promote understanding. When we struggle with difficult questions together, we learn to appreciate different viewpoints, to challenge our own assumptions, and to find common ground even in disagreement. ____20____ Didn’t many of the world’s greatest discoveries and inventions start with someone asking “What if?” or “Why not?”
So next time you find yourself in a conversation, don’t be afraid to dig a little deeper, to ask the big questions, and to challenge assumptions. Your brain and the world will thank you for it.
A. Intellectual questions arise accordingly.
B. It’s like going to the gym, but for your brain.
C. Intellectual questions are not just surface-level inquiries.
D. Moreover, raising big questions drives innovation and progress.
E. In a world full of challenges, they are more important than ever.
F. As we explore further, the questions touch on the very fabric of our society.
G. The questions that unlock deep insights and meaningful connections lie in every corner.

The football season was almost over. Sally had been playing football all summer. She really enjoyed running around with the other players in her bright orange uniform, chasing the black and white ball across the grassy field. As much as shewed, though, Sally still had not scored one single goal.
Before each game, they had a practice session. The coach showed Sally and her team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. Sally was pretty good at passing the ball, but even during practices, she couldn't kick the ball past the goalkeeper. She wondered if she should quit football and join a different club.
“Don’t give up,” said the coach. But it was half-time, and Sally was feeling frustrated (沮丧). She was trying! Every time she got a chance to kick the ball, it would go in the wrong direction or a player from the other team would take control of it. She sipped at her cola and pouted (撅嘴).
The break was over and the referee blew his whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. Sally bent, tied up her shoelace and heard her mother whisper in her ear. “Stay focused. Keep your eyes on the ball. Look for an opportunity to get the ball. You can do it.”
Sally stood up and took a deep breath. Even if she didn't get one goal all summer, she knew that she had tried her best. That was something to be proud of. So she smiled at her mother and headed to her position. The whistle blew, and the game continued.
The score was tied with one goal each. The green team was pretty good, but Sally's orange team was fast. The girls' ponytails bounced as they ran, with many feet kicking frantically (拼命地) at the ball when it came near them. It was a rather boring game and Sally's heart was no longer in it.

B 5. C 6. A 7. A

根据文章第一段“I’ll be honest: I’m not a science guy. Physics, for me, was mostly a fog of equations I tried to survive in school.(说实话,我并不是个理科达人。上学时,物理对我来说就是一堆晦涩难懂的公式,我只是勉强应付)”可知,作者最初认为物理充满难懂的公式,是学业上的难题。故选B。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Tegmark explains it with a brilliant analogy. Light does the same: bending as it enters water, following the path of least time, not least distance.(泰格马克用一个绝妙的类比解释了这个原理。
根据文章第四段“The “Fermat” way is different: start small, reduce friction, bend your path to match the environment where your progress flows faster.(而“费马式”的方法截然不同:从小处着手,减少阻碍,调整路线去适配那些能让你进步更快的环境)”可知,“费马式”方法与作者之前的方式不同之处在于从小处着手,允许微小的改变。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Maybe the key to improving our lives bit by bit isn’t about more force or straight-line speed. Maybe it’s about paying attention to the medium we’re moving through— our time, mood, health, energy— and adjusting our angle. Because, as nature shows us, the optimal path is rarely the straight one.(或许,一步步让生活变好的关键,不在于用更大力气,也不在于追求直线式的速度。而在于关注我们身处的“环境介质”—— 我们的时间、心情、健康与精力,并适时调整自己的角度。因为大自然早已告诉我们:最优的路径,从来都不是直线)”可知,作者认为人生与自我改变应像费马原理一样,适时变通、适配环境、顺势而为,而非强行走直线。故选A。

A 9. B 10. D 11. D

由文章第二段“What makes this “Reels” feature strange is that it is hugely addictive, which I know quite well from my own personal experience. Last Friday, I took a break and hit on one short clip of someone making dinner and, well, the next time I looked up it was 20 minutes later and the blank document on my computer monitor was confirming to me that my work was still not done. 故选A。
由文章第三段中“Today, TikTok has around 23 million UK users every month-including basically every person you know under the age of 25. And that fact has made Facebook and its parent company, Meta, very nervous indeed. As TikTok has continued to boom, Facebook has actually fallen in popularity among “Gen Z”. The reason TikTok has proven such a powerful challenger to Facebook’s social media dominance is almost entirely down to these sorts of short-form videos.
由文章第四中段 “The format is almost perfectly optimised to be as addictive as possible: TikTok’s app shows you a short-form video, and if you don’t like it, you can simply swipe it away and another one will start playing instantly. (这种格式几乎是完美的优化,尽可能让人上瘾:Tik Tok的应用程序会显示一段短视频,如果你不喜欢,你可以简单地把它移开,另一个视频就会立即开始播放。)”可知,TikTok用户如果不喜欢当前视频,只需滑动即可立即开始播放下一个视频。这种快速切换机制让用户能持续不断地浏览新内容,增强了其吸引力。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。由文章最后一段中“Facebook isn’t the only app trying to do what TikTok does so well. Instagram, which is owned by Facebook’s parent company Meta, has integrated Reels even more aggressively into its app. And even Google is nervous, launching its own TikTok-style video section of YouTube (which it owns) a couple of years ago. As things stand, though TikTok currently maintains a healthy lead in the category, both YouTube and Facebook have deep pockets-so expect to see even more Reels and Shorts popping up in your feed as this intense battle continues to rage. You won’t be able to take your eyes off them.

A 13. C 14. D 15. D

根据第一段“Plastic and cheap clothes are not a glorious legacy (遗产). But a scientist exploring which items from our technological civilization are most likely to survive for many millions of years as fossils (化石) has reached an ironic and instructive conclusion: Plastic and fast fashion will be our everlasting geological signature. (塑料与廉价服饰并非光荣的文明遗产。但一位科学家在探究人类科技文明中,哪些物质最有可能留存数百万年成为化石时,得出了极具讽刺意味且富有启发意义的结论:塑料和快时尚服饰,将成为人类永恒的地质印记)”可知,这类不光彩的人造产物会永久留存,该现象充满讽刺与警示意味,体现出作者对此持担忧的态度。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Plastic will definitely be a signature ‘technofossil’, because it is incredibly tough, we are making massive amounts of it, and it gets around the entire globe. (塑料无疑将成为一种标志性的‘技术化石’,因为它极其坚韧,我们正在大量生产它,并且它遍布全球。)”以及第五段“Human activities, such as oil drilling and nuclear tests, will leave lasting scars. (石油钻探、核试验等人类活动会留下永久性痕迹。)”可知,technofossils指代人类创造、难以降解、可留存数百万年的人造产物,核废料符合该定义,而棉质、丝绸衣物可自然降解,不属于技术化石。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Humankind has also created many near-indestructible chemicals, such as dioxins and DDT... these chemicals appear to be here to stay. “And there is the graphite (石墨) used in pencils,” says Gabbott. (人类还创造了许多几乎坚不可摧的化学物质,如二恶英和滴滴涕……这些化学物质似乎会一直存在。“还有铅笔中使用的石墨,”加博特说道。)”可知,儿童画作由石墨绘制,文章列举该例子,是为佐证人造化学物质可以形成化石、长久留存的观点。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The big message here is that the amount of stuff we are now making is eye-watering — it’s off the scale...But today it outweighs all plants and animals. “This raises serious questions for us all,” she says, “Do you need that? Do you really need to buy more?” (这里要传达的重要信息是,我们现在制造的物品数量令人瞠目结舌——已经超出了常规范围……但如今,这些物品的数量超过了所有植物和动物。“你需要那个吗?你真的需要再买一些吗?”)”可知,Gabbott最核心的担忧是人类无节制、大规模的物质商品过度生产问题。

【答案】Dear Chris,
Delighted to know that you are launching the activity themed “Connection” to bridge the interpersonal gap caused by the prevailing AI technology. I’d like to offer some practical suggestions.
Primarily, holding offline interactive workshops is highly recommended. Unlike superficial online communication, face-to-face cooperation enables us to build genuine emotional bonds effectively. Furthermore, it would be ideal to organize small group sharing sessions, where participants can exchange their feelings about alienated social relationships in the AI era.
Such activities can effectively break the virtual barrier, awaken people’s awareness of real-life connection, and ultimately warm up our increasingly distant interpersonal relationships.
Hope my suggestions will be of great help to you.
Yours,
Li Hua

Sally started daydreaming about joining other school clubs.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Recalling her mother's words. Sally was woken from her daydream.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Sally started daydreaming about joining other school clubs. She could be a member of the hip hop club, which her best friend Tracy kept talking about. She imagined herself dancing on stage of a big auditorium with thousands of people cheering for her. She could also try a different sport, like jogging or cycling. Anyway, football would be her last choice. Just as her mind was wandering, she saw a familiar face in the crowd. It was her mother. “Stay focused. You can do it.”
Recalling her mother’s words, Sally was woken from her daydream. At that very moment, her teammate passed the ball to her. She took control of it and dribbled it between her feet, moving forward toward the net of the green team. She passed a few players and was soon positioned right in front of the net. Focused on the ball, she kicked it as hard as she could. The referee blew her whistle. “Goal!”. Sally’s team won. Her mom was right. All she had to do was stay focused.
