As the days went by, Wilbur grew and grew. He ate three big meals a day. He spent long hours lying on his side, half asleep, dreaming pleasant dreams. He enjoyed good health and he put on a lot of weight. One afternoon, the oldest sheep walked into the bam (畜棚) and stopped to pay a call on Wilbur.
“Hello!” she said. “Seems to me you’re putting on weight.”
“Yes, I guess I am,” replied Wilbur. “At my age it’s a good idea to keep growing.”
“I really don’t agree with you,” said the old sheep, “You know why they’re fattening you up, don’t you?”
“No,” said Wilbur.
“Well, I don’t like to spread bad news,” said the sheep, “but they’re fattening you up because they’re going to kill you, that’s why.”
“Kill you. Turn you into smoked bacon (熏猪肉) and ham,” continued the old sheep. “Almost all young pigs get killed by the farmers as soon as the cold weather set in. Everyone is on the list-Lurvy, Zuckerman, even John Arable.”
“Stop!” screamed Wilbur. “I don’t want to die! Save me, somebody! Save me!”
“Be quiet, Wilbur!” said Charlotte, the spider, who was the best friend of Wilbur.
“I can’t be quiet,” screamed Wilbur, jumping up and down. “I don’t want to be killed. I don’t want to die. Is it true what the old sheep says, Charlotte? Is it true they are going to kill me when the cold weather comes? Will I die?”
“Well,” said the spider, thought for a while at her web, “the old sheep has seen many poor pigs be killed. If she says they plan to kill you, I’m sure it’s true.”
“I don’t want to die,” he cried sadly, throwing himself to the ground, “I want to stay alive, right here in my comfortable barn with all my friends. I want to breathe the beautiful air and lie in the beautiful sun.”
“You shall not die,” said Charlotte, briskly (轻快地).

①Birthdays can sometimes be expensive. People often spend money not just on gifts, but also on food and drinks. So many people have started giving second-hand gifts. But is it a good choice? Let’s look at both sides.
②One reason people choose second-hand gifts is for the environment. Many of us have old toys, books or games that we no longer use. If we throw them away, they end up in landfills (垃圾堆). In these landfills, things can take years to break down and harmful gases are produced. Giving away old things instead of throwing them away can reduce waste and protect the environment. Second-hand gifts are also often cheaper than new ones. What’s more, reusing things reduces the need to produce more products, which also reduces pollution.
③________ When you give a new gift, you know it’s in perfect condition, and it feels special because it’s new. People also like receiving something that shows you’ve thought about them, and sometimes, a second-hand gift might not feel as thoughtful. You may worry that the gift will wear out soon, which can make you feel uncertain about giving it. People may also feel excited when they receive gifts they have wanted for a long time. Of course, it’s fine to want the latest toys or books for a birthday gift. After all, it’s their special day.
④In the end, whether you give a second-hand or new gift depends on the situation. Both can show you care, but it’s important to consider what the birthday person would like the most. What matters most is the thought behind the gift, no matter if it’s new or old.
23. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Old things. B. New gifts. C. Broken products. D. Harmful gases.
24. Which sentence best fits the blank ________ in Paragraph3?
A. Still, some people like second-hand gifts.
B. However, second-hand gifts are always perfect.
C. On the other hand, new gifts have advantages.
D. Also, new gifts are the only choice for special days.
25. What does the writer care most about giving gifts?
A. The thought behind the gift. B. The price of the gift.
C. The popularity of the gift. D. The style of the gift.
26. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
D
As of August 17, Once Upon a Time in the Middle East (《欢迎来到龙餐厅》) has made more than 1 billion yuan in seven days after it was shown in theatres, including pre-sales and advance screenings (超前点映). The movie star Shen Teng, is a very popular Chinese comedy actor. This film is quite different from his usual funny roles. It is directed by Wen Muye, who made the popular movie Dying to Survive (《我不是药神》). This real-life-style war movie has caught people’s attention all over China with its careful and deep care for human beings.
The story takes place in the Middle East, where wars and troubles break out. The main character is Xu Fu, a common Chinese cook. He goes abroad to pay off his debts and opens Loong Restaurant. When war breaks out, his restaurant becomes one of the few safe places in the area. At first, Xu Fu only wants to keep himself safe. Slowly, he lets poor homeless war-hurt children stay in his restaurant. He uses simple leftover food from his kitchen to make his special dish, Xu Fu Rice Stew, for these hopeless children. Saif is one of the children saved by Xu Fu. He learns cooking from Xu Fu. This gives him a peaceful way to stay away from war violence. Shen Teng gives a great performance in this movie. He does not use his usual funny acting style, and he shows the quiet kindness of a common man.
The refrain “eat well” is the heart feeling of this movie. Every warm bowl of rice stew shows this idea. It stands for basic human dignity (尊严) and hope — things that war can easily destroy.
The movie does not believe peace can only come from winning wars or signing diplomatic(外交) agreements. Instead, it tells us peace lies in small kind acts and simple everyday life. The film shows how badly war hurts children and shows the quiet power of common people. It gives us ordinary people’s ideas about world conflicts. With its true and thought-provoking (激起,引发) anti-war ideas, the movie moves lots of viewers.
27. What can we infer about Xu Fu from the passage?
A. He went to other countries to give war-hurt kids a safe place.
B. He mainly thought about keeping himself safe at first.
C. He made his special food mostly to make more money.
D. He used his kindness and cooking skills to stop the local war.
28. According to the text, what does the film think brings peace?
A. We can get peace only by winning wars.
B. We can get peace only through official written agreements.
C. Small kind things from common people can bring peace.
D. Peace will come when war-broken places are fully built again.
29. What does the underlined word “refrain” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. a written agreement B. a strict rule for people
C. one person’s own idea D. a sentence that is said many times
30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. To introduce a war-themed film and explore its anti-war message.
B. To compare different ideas of peace in some popular new movies.
C. To find out why films with funny actors gain huge success.
D. To argue that cooking skills can save people’s lives in wars.

A. B. C. D.

What is “monkey mind”?
Our mind is amazing. It helps us think, dream, plan and remember. But sometimes it feels like a monkey jumping around — our thoughts jump from one to another. This is called a “monkey mind”. Research shows that humans have about 6,000 thoughts every day. It’s normal to feel this way. ____31____
How can we calm down the “monkey”?
Tip 1: Use your senses to focus.
Your brain can’t turn off easily. When your thoughts start jumping, you can use your senses to focus. ____32____That’s because when your brain is relaxed, it’s easier to learn new things.
Tip 2: Do something creative.
Creating things can make your brain stronger, which can build new connections in your brain. It helps you make better choices. ____33____ Most importantly, be kind to your mind.
Tip 3: Try belly (腹部) breathing.
Using your breath can slow down your brain. A fun way to practice is belly breathing. ____34____ Then watch your hand rise when you breathe in, and fall when you breathe out. This helps you keep calm, and you can do it anytime, anywhere.
A. It’s best to do this when you’re relaxed.
B. Lie down and put your hand on your belly.
C. But there are easy ways to calm your brain.
D. You should try to stop thinking completely.
E. So we can try drawing and other art activities.
31. ________
32. ________
33. ________
34. ________
35. Is it easy to focus when your brain is relaxed? How do you calm down your “monkey”?
________________________________
C 32. A 33. E 34. B
35. Yes, it is. I try belly breathing.(言之有理即可)
前文解释了“monkey mind”是什么,后文开始讲“How can we calm down the ‘monkey’”。
A 项“最好在你放松的时候做这件事”中,“this”可指代前文“use your senses to focus”,后文解释原因,逻辑通顺。
根据前文“A fun way to practice is belly breathing”和后文“Then watch your hand rise when you breathe in, and fall when you breathe out.”,可知这里需要腹部呼吸的第一步动作。
根据第二段“That’s because when your brain is relaxed, it’s easier to learn new things.”,结合该段小标题“use your senses to focus”,可知“放松时更易专注”,故答“Yes, it is”。 Yes, it is. I try belly breathing.或Yes. I listen to music to calm my “monkey”.

根据“because of an illness”和“different from most kids”可知,生病导致她的方式与众不同,旁人看来是奇怪的,strange符合语境。
根据前文“made fun of her”可知,此处指嘲笑她,laughed at符合场景逻辑。thought about“思考”、heard of“听说”、agreed with“同意”和后文的欺凌行为不匹配。
根据后文“Maybe they are the ones...”
them“它们”、us“我们”、him“他”都无法指代这封信。
根据“so he shared it on a TV show”可知,记者觉得愿望有意义才分享,meaningful符合这个愿望带来的正向传播价值。
根据“You’re not alone. We all care about you.”
根据“For the first time, she didn’t feel so alone”可知,她珍视这些信,会仔细阅读,carefully契合她认真对待这些温暖来信的状态。

空格前是making Ou sculpture,空格后是just watching them,两者形成对比,表示“而不是”。
方框中everyone意为“每个人”,代入后the tour will offer everyone a chance,结构正确,因此填everyone。
空格前是much,空格后是than before,需要比较级。方框中well意为“好”,其比较级是better,much better than before表示“比以前好得多”,符合语境,因此填better。

A Special Experience
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Last term, I joined in a school English speech competition with several of my classmates.
We spent nearly two weeks getting ready for it. Every afternoon after school, we got together to discuss our plan and practice again and again. Once I felt too tired and wanted to give up, my teammates cheered me up and kept me going. With their encouragement, I tried my best. In the end, we won the second prize. We made it!
This experience is special for me. Now I truly realize that teamwork is very important. As long as we pull together, we can overcome difficulties.
Last September, our school held a sports meeting. I took part in the 800-meter race. At first, I felt nervous because I was not really good at running. However, my classmates cheered for me and shouted my name loudly.
During the race, I felt so breathless and tired that I almost wanted to give up but I kept running because I knew my classmates were there. In the end, I didn’t win first prize but I finished the race successfully. What made it special was not the result but the support from my friends.
That day taught me never to give up and to believe in myself.
I had an unforgettable volunteer day last weekend.
I went to the city park with my friends. We picked up rubbish around the lake and cleared away weeds. We also gave people some tips on protecting the environment. Putting up signs aside is a good way but not an easy job as I expected. It was really hot that day. We were sweaty all over. Although we felt tired after hours of work, we enjoyed the sunshine and clean park.
What made it special was that I learned to respect and care for nature. Small actions can make a big difference to our world.
