Tom came to his teacher and asked him, “Sir, I have a question. How many friends should a person have-one or many?”
“It is very simple,” the teacher answered. “Get me that red apple from the highest branch of the tree.”
Tom looked up and said, “It’s too high. I can’t reach it.”
“Ask a friend. Maybe he can help,” the teacher suggested.
Tom called another student and stood on his shoulders (肩膀) to reach the branch. “I still can’t reach it, sir,” said Tom sadly after the first try.

Trees are one of the oldest plants of our Earth. They keep our air clean, make less pollution, make water cleaner and provide food and building materials.
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At one to three years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns (刺) to stop animals from going near.
At the age of four years old, trees begin to grow very quickly and become strong enough to face many difficulties (困难) later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults (成年人). They grow more slowly and begin to produce (生长) flowers and fruit.
When the tree is 20 to 25 years old, it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. It gives us shade and provides a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we all learn how to protect the adult tree, it will live healthily for many years.
Little by little, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, older trees are still very important in nature. When a tree becomes hollow or part of it dies, it can be a home to small animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar (相似的) to our own life. When looking at the life of a tree, we should enjoy every minute of its life and take care of the tree!

A. We can find flowers and fruit on 4-year-old trees.
B. Older trees can be great places for people to live.
C. An adult tree can live long and well if we all learn how to protect them.
D. The life of the tree is the same as the life of people.
40. What’s the structure (结构) of the article? (P: Paragraph段落)

Once, Yunnan food was not well-known in Chinese cooking. But now, it has developed well by showing what other provinces don’t have.
In 1903, a British official named George Litton said Yunnan was very beautiful. Under the winter sun, its forests and mountains seemed to attract people. Long ago, people thought Yunnan was a place with simple food. But as more people traveled there, its special food charm (魅力) spread.
Yunnan has many ethnic (民族的) groups and is a place where different cultures meet. These two things make its food special. Chef Zhang Yingfei says Yunnan food is “green”. It uses fresh, natural things for cooking. Yunnan has different kinds of land, like places with tall, thick plants and areas with high altitude (海拔) . With so many ethnic groups, some even say there’s no single “Yunnan food” to describe it. Architect Lu Jing notes, “Our food has all tastes, including rare (罕见的) bitter ones and things you can only eat in certain seasons.”
Mushrooms are the most famous part of Yunnan food. It has over 250 kinds of wild mushrooms — that’s two-thirds of all eatable wild mushrooms in China. Though some people get sick from eating the wrong wild mushrooms, their freshness still draws many people. Mushroom tourism is growing too: Nanhua County, called the “Kingdom of Wild Mushrooms”, gets lots of visitors. A town named Longpeng has a mushroom festival every year.
People living in cities love Yunnan’s healthy food. Some take trips to Yunnan to make local cheese or pick tea. On the other hand, Yunnan food comes to cities. National chain restaurants do well. Like Yun Hai Yao, workers wear beautiful necklaces and earrings from ethnic groups to attract customers. Shanghai even has restaurants with Lijiang style. Chef Zhang says, “Chefs will take Yunnan food to other countries. It’ll become more creative!”

Should Friends Be Similar or Different?
There’s a saying, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” I think friends can be both similar and different.
My friend Tom and I are similar. We both enjoy sports, especially basketball, and often play together. This makes our friendship stronger. But my friend Lucy is different. She’s very outgoing and loves new things. Her being different has encouraged me to try new stuff too.
In my view, whether friends are alike or not, the key is that they support each other. With such friends, we can grow together.
