Immersive Van Gogh Exhibition Opens in Singapore
What is the exhibition about?
Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is a large-scale digital art exhibition that brings the Post-Impressionist master’s works to life through projections, sound and interactive technology. It returns to Singapore with a notable new feature.
What is the key new feature?
“It’s about participation, not just observation,” notes a curator. A dedicated AI Studio has been added. Visitors can type a text prompt, such as “sunflowers under a starry sky”, and an artificial intelligence algorithm will instantly generate a unique digital image in Van Gogh’s distinctive style of brushstrokes and colors. This image can then be projected alongside the artist’s classic works.
What are the main sections of the experience?
Digital Galleries: Walk through rooms surrounded by animated projections of paintings like The Starry Night and Sunflowers.
AI Studio: Create and display your own AI-generated Van Gogh-style artwork.
VR Journey: Use virtual reality headsets to explore the landscapes of Arles, France, that inspired Van Gogh.
TIME SPENT ACROSS THE 3 MAIN SECTIONS
*Tip: The amount of time visitors spend in a section directly reflects how appealing it is.
What are the dates and prices?
Dates & Venue: 15 November, 2025 — 15 May, 2026, Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre.
Ticket Price: Adult: $32(Weekdays)/$38(Weekends)
Child (5 — 12): $18(All days) / Children under 5 enter free.
Student (13 — 17 or with valid ID): $22(All days)

Henrietta Swan Leavitt was born in 1868 in Massachusetts, USA. As a young girl, she loved looking at the night sky, but her life took a difficult turn when she caught a serious illness at the age of 20. The illness left her nearly deaf, making it hard for her to communicate with others. However, this did not stop her from following her passion for astronomy.
In 1893, Leavitt joined the Harvard College Observatory as a “computer” — a person who calculated (计算) astronomical data by hand. At that time, women were not allowed to use the observatory’s telescopes or publish research under their own names. They were paid only 25 cents an hour, much less than men doing the same work. Despite these unfair conditions, Leavitt worked tirelessly. She studied variable stars, which change in brightness over time.
One day, Leavitt noticed a pattern: the brighter a certain type of variable star (called a Cepheid variable) was, the longer its cycle of brightness change. This was a groundbreaking discovery. Before her work, astronomers had no way to measure distances to faraway galaxies (星系). But with Leavitt’s law, they could use Cepheid variables as “standard candles” to calculate these distances. This discovery helped later astronomers like Edwin Hubble prove that the universe is expanding.
Sadly, Leavitt did not live to see the full impact of her work. She died in 1921 at the age of 53. It was not until many years later that her contributions were fully recognized. Today, she is remembered as one of the most important astronomers of the 20th century. Her story teaches us that even in the face of great challenges, passion and hard work can change the world.
4. What does paragraph 1 mainly focus on?
A. Ways for the deaf to communicate.
B. A serious illness in Massachusetts.
C. Leavitt’s early life and physical hardship.
D. How Leavitt became interested in astronomy.
5. How could astronomers measure distances to faraway galaxies?
A. By using Cepheid variables as standard candles.
B. By observing the movement speed of common stars.
C. By studying the shape and size of galaxies.
D. By using powerful telescopes to watch galaxies directly.
6. What can we know from the passage?
A. Leavitt’s discovery helped prove the universe is getting smaller.
B. Leavitt could use the observatory’s telescopes freely in 1893.
C. Women doing astronomical work were paid as much as men.
D. Leavitt never saw her work fully recognized during her lifetime.
7. In which column of a newspaper can you read the passage?
A. Travel & Nature. B. People & Science.
C. Health & Medicine. D. Art & Culture.

Albert Einstein owed his brilliant mind to having a child-like sense of humour. Indeed, a number of studies have found a relationship between humour and intelligence. Researchers in Austria recently discovered that funny people, particularly those who enjoy dark humour, have higher IQs than their less funny fellows. They think that it takes both cognitive (认知的) and emotional ability to process and produce humour.
In psychology we use the term “positive humour style” to refer to people who use humour to enhance relationships. This type of humour is connected with relationship satisfaction, extroversion (外向性) and high self-respect. Having a humorous way of thinking about life is also a good strategy. It helps people better manage stress and challenges.
Not only do funny people make other people laugh, they also laugh more themselves. And laughter leads to brain changes, which may explain the link between humour and intelligence. Neuropsychological studies have found that experiencing positive emotional states, such as joy, fun and happiness, increases the production of dopamine (多巴胺) in the brain. Dopamine not only makes us feel great, but also opens up the learning centres of the brain, which enables more neural (神经) connections. As a result, we become more flexible and creative in our thinking.
Evidence suggests that humour actually increases feelings of confidence, competence and status, making funny people very influential. Humour gets people to listen, helps communicate messages and benefits learning. It is a powerful tool that many successful leaders use to enhance group work and organizational culture.
Research on the use of humour in education also supports the concept that humour is an effective aid to learning. Several studies have showed that lessons that are delivered with humour are more enjoyable for students, and also bolster students’ understanding and recall of the topic.
8. What do researchers in Austria think it takes to process and produce humour?
A. Good memory and rich life experience. B. Cognitive and emotional ability.
C. High self-respect and outgoing personality. D. Enough knowledge and social skills.
9. What is the author’s attitude to having a humorous view on life?
A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Worried.
10. What can be inferred about dopamine?
A. It helps improve people’s thinking ability and creativity.
B. It helps people be humorous.
C. It stops the brain from building neural connections.
D. It can’t be produced by brains with diseases.
11. What does the underlined word “bolster” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Damage. B. Blame. C. Improve. D. Advertise.
D
Each species of whale has a distinct communication system that often varies within populations. Since humans have been researching and observing these forms of communication, a question has arisen: Could humans one day engage in acoustic (声音的) interactions with whales? To find out the answer, researchers from the Whale-SETI team have been exploring whale-to-human communication with humpback whales (座头鲸).
When scientists recorded a humpback whale contact call, known as a “whup”, and played it underwater around their research boat, it was eye-opening for them to find a whale named Twain became a more than willing participant in the call-and-response exchange. Scientists produced a whup call. Twain would then respond with her own whup call to them. This was described as “conversation” in a PeerJ paper.
“It might loosely translate to ‘hello’ or some sort of greeting call when other creatures come together or just to signal that they are in a certain location,” says Josephine Hubbard, an animal behaviorist with Whale SETI. In this case, it was as if Twain was either saying “hello” to scientists or “I’m over here.” But in both instances, she was responding to and engaging with whale signals that humans produced. She circled around the scientists’ boat and produced more signals before leaving. “What’s cool about her is that she could have left at any point, as it wasn’t an environment where she couldn’t leave, so she was choosing to be close to us,” said Hubbard.
Humpback whales also produced “bubble (气泡) rings” close to boats suggesting that they were being playful and doing it in a relaxed manner. All the findings showed humpback whales enjoyed friendly encounters with humans.
Of course, whether whales want to communicate with humans varies by the nature of the whale and by the situation. Just like some humans are more outgoing than others, this could also be true for whales, although this would need more research to understand.
12. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To explain a new concept.
B. To lead into the topic.
C. To prove the researchers’ opinions.
D. To show the popularity of humpback whales.
13. What may Hubbard agree with?
A. Whales’ calls mean that danger is coming.
B. Twain was forced to stay and respond to humans.
C. The “whup” call is a greeting or location signal.
D. It is impossible to understand whales’ real feelings.
14. Why did humpback whales produce “bubble rings” to boats?
A. To show playfulness and relaxation. B. To show their sense of hunger.
C. To warn humans to leave the sea area. D. To hunt fish near the research boats.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Ways to protect humpback whales in nature.
B. Different kinds of calls made by large whales.
C. The living habits of humpback whales in the ocean.
D. Research on human-humpback whale communication.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
John, a little boy, stood in a grassy field. He held his homemade kite by the string. His face looked very focused as he pulled the kite behind him. He ran as fast as he could. He looked back, hoping to see the kite fly up. But it only bounced and tumbled on the ground, which sent small pieces of grass flying. Soon he was out of breath. He stopped and let out a deep sigh.
He turned to his sister Lucy, who sat nearby. “Will you give my kite a lift?” he asked. Lucy came over and took the kite from him. “OK, run when I throw it!” she said. John nodded firmly and got ready to run. Lucy threw the kite high into the air. But John watched her throw and did not run. He stood still for a moment. The kite fell down onto the grass again.
“Ah! How clumsy you are!” Lucy complained, stamping her foot. “It was all your fault.” John answered back. Just then, their aunt, who was watching from a bench, called out gently, “Try again, children.”
Their second try was made with more care. They worked together, and Lucy let the kite go at exactly the right moment. But just as it caught the wind, a sudden side wind swept across the field. The kite was blown into a low bush. Its long tail got caught in the branches in an instant. It hung there, upside down like a trapped bird.
“There, there! That is because you threw it to one side.”cried John, pointing angrily. “As if I could make the wind blow straight.” Lucy answered, almost in tears. Their aunt came to help. She carefully freed the tail from the twigs. She rolled up the string and looked at the disappointed children. “There are too many trees here. Let us find a more open space, and then try again,” she said kindly.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

I’m honored to share my ideas on “Ecotourism: A Better Way to Travel”.
Ecotourism has gained more popularity in recent years, which combines tourism with thoughtful actions from tourists. This meaningful and novel way to travel not only protects the environment but also promotes the economy.
There are many things that we can do to practice ecotourism. We can help plant trees, clear rubbish, count or care for endangered animals, or monitor and remove harmful organisms. It is high time that we minded our behavior while enjoying the natural beauty.
Thanks for listening!

They soon found a nice grass plot with no trees. John held the kite tightly and prepared carefully. Lucy waited patiently for the right time to throw it. John began to run fast across the flat grass. Lucy tossed the kite upward softly. It rose a little and floated in the wind briefly. However, the wind soon weakened. The kite wobbled and fell heavily to the ground. Feeling upset, John dropped the string and sighed in low spirits. He thought he would never get the kite to fly and wanted to give up right away.
“Oh John, you should not give up, but try again,” their aunt encouraged. Moved by her warm words, John cheered up a little. With Lucy’s help, they cooperated better. John ran steadily while Lucy released the kite at a perfect time. The kite caught the wind smoothly and rose step by step. Watching the kite flying high in the sky, John laughed happily. He learned that patience and persistence help us get through difficulties and finally achieve our goals.
