Peter’s mother left the world when he was little. Peter lived with his father. His father was a strict and silent man and Peter wasn’t relaxed around him. Every summer vacation, Peter’s father took him to see his grandparents in another city. That was Peter’s happiest time.
This summer vacation, Peter said to his father, “I’m big now. Please let me go to my grandparents’ home alone.”
His father was worried and said no at first. But when Peter still insisted (坚持), he said OK.
That day, Peter’s father drove Peter to the train station. Before Peter got on, his father gave him an envelope (信封) and told him to open it when he felt afraid.
Peter started his trip happily. He had nothing to do and watched different people around him. Soon he found almost everyone was with someone and he started feeling lonely.
At a station, a big man got on and sat down next to him. Peter got afraid because he had a scary look. Just at this time, Peter remembered his father’s envelope. He opened it and found a message. It wrote:

①If someone sees you talking to yourself, you may feel bad about it. But don’t feel uneasy! Talking to yourself actually has a lot of benefits.
②You may know that thinking is good for the brain. It helps us make plans and manage (管理) our feelings. Speaking this inner (内在的) speech out loud can help us do better in different areas.
③When encouragement comes from oneself, it improves self-confidence. A study invited 72 tennis players to take part in matches. Researchers put the players into two groups: one group said nothing while playing, while the other talked to themselves while playing. They found that the self-talkers showed more confidence and played better.
④Talking to yourself, especially in the third person, can also help us manage bad feelings. “Talking to oneself in the third person leads people to think about themselves in the way they think about others” said a professor from Michigan State University. This can help us see things from a different aspect and then feel better.
⑤Self-talking also helps improve memory. Researchers tested four ways to memorize things: reading silently, reading aloud, listening to others reading and listening to a record of reading. Those who read out loud remember the information best because the information is likely to become a long-term memory if it is said out loud.
31. What does the underlined word “benefits” mean in Paragraph 1?

D. It can make more people know the information.
35. What’s the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.
C
Will falling parts from a broken rocket (火箭) hit you on the head? In the past, that seemed impossible. However, that is changing. Scientists warn that falling rocket parts could-hurt people in the next ten years. Research shows that this is because more countries are sending more rockets into space. Therefore, space is becoming congested.
In 2024, there were 259 successful rocket launches (发射). That was a record number. And it is likely that the world will continue to break the record this year. A Canadian study found more than 60% of rockets are left in space after they complete their tasks. These rockets may circle the earth for years before they fall. Scientists found out that rocket parts are more likely to hit the Global South. However, most rockets are launched from the Global North. When rockets fall, their parts often land near poorer countries. Scientists call this “exporting (出口) risk.”
While no one has been hurt yet, the risk of people being hit by falling parts continues to grow. Governments and companies that send rockets into space must act responsibly to protect everyone.
36. Scientists warn people that ________ within the next ten years.
A. rockets will hit each other in space B. we may have less rockets in space
C. falling rocket parts could fall on people D. more countries are sending people to space

A. More than 259 rockets will be left in space in 2025.
B. More than 60% of the rockets will be left in space in 2025.
C. There will be less than 259 successful rocket launches in 2025.
D. More rockets will go into space in 2025 than in 2024.
39. Which of the following sentences is TRUE?
A. Rockets fall as soon as they finish their work.
B. Most rockets are launched from the Global South.
C. Rocket parts are more likely to hit the Global North.
D. Rocket parts often fall near poorer countries.

The compass (罗盘) brings a lot to the whole world. It is an important invention in both China’s history and the world’s history and makes a big difference to us. People can travel anywhere freely and correctly with its help. It’s a tool with a needle (指针) which always points to the south. Tourists and sailors use it a lot.
The first compass was invented in China between the 2nd century BC and 1st century AD. Story has it that a farmer first noticed some rocks stuck to iron things. Later, people found that a special stone called lodestone (磁石) always pointed in the same direction when hung up. They found the ladle (长柄勺) of a compass pointed south all the time. Ancient Chinese used it to find places. By the 11th century, people started using compasses for sailing.
The first compasses were made of lodestone, but later, people used a magnetized (磁化的) steel (钢的) needle as their main part. The compass arrived in Europe between the 12th and 13th centuries. Today, compasses are still useful, even in space!
