I.阅读理解
[话题人工智能在保护濒危语言方面的作用和挑战]
Languages represent far more than mere
communication tools;they are complex carriers
of cultural memory,showing unique view-
points,cultural traditions,and collective wis-
dom.Language loss occurs when the final native
speakers disappear,transforming vivid linguis-
tic(语言的)traditions into historical artifacts.
The loss of a language is not merely a loss of
words but a deep loss of human heritage(
产),disconnecting communities from their an-
cestral roots and their unique worldview. While
language extinction is not a new phenomenon,
languages are disappearing at the fastest rate in
recorded history, with one language lost every
three to four months.
Artificial intelligence (AI)has introduced
innovative methods for preserving and refresh-
ing endangered languages,offering tools that
were unimaginable in traditional linguistic re-
search.Automated Transcription Tools can
change spoken language into written text,
while Large Language Models (LLMs)are
trained on extensive datasets to perform trans-
lations across a wide range of languages.
While AI offers promising solutions,it
faces a significant challenge which blocks its
full potential. The vast majority of these endan-
gered languages are underrepresented digitally.
If one language doesn't have a lot of text on-
line,it will be less represented in those tech-
nologies. This digital divide is further worsened
by the dominance of a few languages on the In-
ternet.Consequently,endangered languages are
often excluded from AI technologies,leaving
their speakers pushed aside in the digital space.
