After giving a talk at Dartmouth, my undergraduate college, I made a familiar pilgrimage (朝圣): I walked past my dorm room, visited my favorite parts of the library, and went to put my hand on my old mailbox. Maybe you no longer need to kneel at the mailbox of your youth, but I do. The emotional gravity of that location still pulls.
I found it easily (Hinman Post Office Box 99). I either forgot the combination to the lock or they changed it, probably because every alum (校友) who visited tried to see if it would work. My residence was about half a mile away but even on freezing days, I’d be desperate enough to check in the early morning and again in the late afternoon to see whether something waited there for me.
Letters — handwritten, stamped and posted days or even weeks before they arrived — had the power to make me either wildly happy or sad. I longed for mail the way mystics (神秘家) long for voices from the mountaintops. Because my mailbox was on the lowest level, nearest to the floor, I literally had to get onto my knees to see whether my wishes would come true that day. The only things missing were clerical robes, a bell, and a candle to make it a fully religious scene.
Handwritten letters, apparently, continue to capture the imagination. I remember the letters that changed my life. I remember when I got my college acceptances — and rejections. I remember the love letters — and rejections. I recall phrases from the acceptances by employers, agents and editors — with entire paragraphs from their rejections burned into my brain.
In the days before everything was electronic, much arrived that you didn’t see coming. Seeing an envelope addressed in a familiar hand can still make my heart beat faster. That’s worth a first-class stamp. That’s worth a trip to the mailbox. The excitement of opening an envelope is too deep to renounce.
Write a letter. Mail it!
24. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To clarify a concept. B. To advocate handwritten letters.
C. To introduce a course. D. To share a speaking experience.
25. Why does the author mention "mystics" in paragraph 3?
A. To give vivid descriptions. B. To better define a term.
C. To explain a phenomenon. D. To provide more details.
26. What does the author want to demonstrate in paragraph 4?
A. What impressed her most while at college.
B. When she preferred to communicate by letter.
C. How handwritten letters have impacted her life.
D. What caused her to value handwritten letters most.
27. What does the underlined word "renounce" in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Experience. B. Understand. C. Recommend. D. Abandon.
B 25. A 26. C 27. D

根据第三段中的“I longed for mail the way mystics (神秘家) long for voices from the mountaintops. (我期盼信件,就如同神秘主义者渴望来自山顶的声音一般。)”可知,作者借用神秘主义者的渴望进行类比,生动形象地描绘出自己当初迫切盼望收到信件的心情。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“I remember the letters that changed my life. I remember when I got my college acceptances — and rejections. I remember the love letters — and rejections. (我记得那些改变我人生的信件。我记得我收到大学录取通知——以及拒绝通知的时候。我记得那些情书——以及拒绝信。)”可知,本段列举各类信件,意在说明手写信件对作者人生产生的诸多影响。
【27题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中的“Seeing an envelope addressed in a familiar hand can still make my heart beat faster. That’s worth a first-class stamp. That’s worth a trip to the mailbox. The excitement of opening an envelope is too deep to renounce. (看到一个用熟悉笔迹书写收件地址的信封,仍然可以让我的心跳加快。那值得一张一等邮票。那值得一趟去往邮箱的行程。拆开信封的激动太过强烈而无法renounce。)”可知,拆开信封的喜悦十分珍贵,是难以放弃的,由此可推断renounce含义为“放弃”。

Labor shortages in agriculture are driving growing interest in robotic systems that can automate harvesting. Yet some crops remain especially challenging for machines. Tomatoes, for example, grow in clusters (簇), meaning robots must identify and remove only the ripe fruit while leaving unripe tomatoes attached to the vine. Doing this reliably requires careful judgement and precise control.
To address this problem, Professor Takuya Fujinaga from Osaka Metropolitan University developed a method that allows robots to assess how easy each tomato is to harvest before attempting to pick it.
Fujinaga’s approach combines image recognition with statistical analysis to determine the best direction from which to harvest each tomato. The system analyzes visual information about the fruit itself, the shape and position of its stems, and whether the tomato is partially hidden by leaves or other parts of the plant. By weighing these factors, the robot can make more informed control decisions and select the approach that offers the highest chance of a successful harvest.
The model represents a shift in focus from the traditional “detection/recognition” model to what Fujinaga calls a “harvest ease estimation”. “This moves beyond simply asking ‘Can a robot pick a tomato?’ to thinking about ‘How likely is a successful pick?’, which is more meaningful for real-world farming,” he explained.
In trials, Fujinaga’s system achieved a successful harvest rate of 81%, significantly outperforming expectations. Around one quarter of those successful picks involved tomatoes collected from the right or left side after earlier attempts from the front had failed, indicating that the robot adjusted its strategy when it encountered difficulty.
The findings underscore how complex robotic fruit harvesting can be, with factors such as clustered growth, stem shape, surrounding leaves, and visual obstruction (阻碍) all playing critical roles. “This research establishes ‘ease of harvesting’ as a quantitatively evaluable metric (度量), bringing us one step closer to the realization of agricultural robots that can make informed decisions and act intelligently,” Fujinaga said. “This is expected to introduce a new form of agriculture where robots and humans collaborate.”
28. What poses a problem in robotic harvest of tomatoes?
A. Making judgments. B. Removing clusters.
C. Adjusting heights. D. Measuring shapes.
29. What does Fujinaga’s system aim to achieve in fruit harvesting?
A. Energy conservation. B. Time efficiency. C. Safe storage. D. Easy harvest.
30. What did Fujinaga’s model do after its unsuccessful picks?
A. It got detailed visual information. B. It picked tomatoes from different directions.
C. It identified the maturity of tomatoes. D. It gave up the tomatoes in the front.
31. What does Fujinaga suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Robots will one day replace human farmers.
B. An accurate metric system is a must in farming.
C. Robots will work alongside humans in farming.
D. The success of agricultural robots was a milestone.
A 29. D 30. B 31. C
根据第一段“Labor shortages in agriculture are driving growing interest in robotic systems that can automate harvesting. Yet some crops remain especially challenging for machines. Tomatoes, for example, grow in clusters (簇), meaning robots must identify and remove only the ripe fruit while leaving unripe tomatoes attached to the vine. Doing this reliably requires careful judgement and precise control. (农业劳动力短缺促使人们对能够实现采摘自动化的机器人系统日益关注。然而,某些作物对机器仍具有特殊挑战。例如,番茄以簇状生长(即成串),这意味着机器人必须仅识别并采摘成熟的果实,同时将未成熟的番茄留在藤蔓上。要可靠地完成这一任务,需要审慎的判断和精准的控制。)”可知,做出判断是机器人采摘西红柿时面临的难题。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“To address this problem, Professor Takuya Fujinaga from Osaka Metropolitan University developed a method that allows robots to assess how easy each tomato is to harvest before attempting to pick it. (为了解决这一问题,大阪市立大学的藤永拓也教授开发出一种方法,使机器人在尝试采摘番茄之前,能够评估每颗番茄的采摘难度。)”可知,该系统旨在评估采摘难度,从而实现更容易的采摘。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Around one quarter of those successful picks involved tomatoes collected from the right or left side after earlier attempts from the front had failed, indicating that the robot adjusted its strategy when it encountered difficulty. (大约四分之一的成功采摘涉及在正面尝试失败后,从右侧或左侧采集的番茄,这表明机器人在遇到困难时会调整其策略。)”可知,机器人在正面尝试采摘失败后,会调整策略,从左侧或右侧(即不同的方向)继续尝试采摘。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“This is expected to introduce a new form of agriculture where robots and humans collaborate. (这预计将引入一种新型农业,即机器人与人类协作。)”可知,Fujinaga暗示未来机器人将在农业中与人类并肩协同工作。

Bubble-net (气泡网) feeding is a hunting strategy that whales eating in groups use. When a group feeds this way, it is a well-timed sequence (顺序) of behaviors that requires communication and cooperation, which is even more evidence of their high social intelligence.
In bubble-net feeding, the group of whales dive down below a school of fish or a small shellfish known as krill. Then, they blow bubble rings from their blowholes to stun their prey (猎物) and trap them closer to the surface. Once near the surface, the whales open up their giant mouths and swallow everything in the bubble net before shutting their mouths. The baleen plates push out the water, while the whales swallow the animals whole.
Now it appears that humpbacks are the only whales that can feed this way, thanks to their unique pectoral flippers (胸鳍). The biomechanics and more are detailed in a study recently published in the Journal of Experimental Biology.
A team from the University of Hawaii used data from drones to get a closer look at how the whales feed. With this data, they could accurately quantify the enormous turning performance required for the action.
“The fact that humpback whales’ pectoral flippers enhance their flexibility in motion wasn’t the most surprising part of our study, as there have been previous studies on the forms and structures of these flippers,” Cameron Nemeth, a study co-author, said in a statement, “However, it was shocking to discover that amongst thousands of turns from a variety of behavioral states, no other species of whale examined were achieving the turning performance required to create a bubble-net.”
In order to make the turn needed to form the bubble net, the humpback whales’ large pectoral flippers can generate nearly half of the necessary force. “Even if other whale species are physically capable of making similar turns, they would need to spend significantly more energy to do so. Having to burn so much energy would make it an impractical feeding strategy,” said Cameron.
32. How do whales behave in bubble-net feeding?
A. They swim alone in silence. B. They work closely like a team.
C. They attack their prey from behind. D. They dive deep down to communicate.
33. What strikes Cameron most regarding humpbacks?
A. Their flippers’ structures. B. Their flexibility.
C. Their high-performance turns. D. Their complexity.
34. Why are other whale species unlikely to use bubble-net feeding strategy according to the text?
A. Their blowholes are relatively small. B. They are not skillful in making turns.
C. Their prey are not easily rounded up. D. They would consume too much energy.
35. What may be a suitable title for the text?
A. Bubble-net Feeding: A Unique Strategy
B. Could Other Whales Produce Bubble-nets?
C. Diet and Eating Habits of Humpback Whales
D. Do Whales Have Arms? The Evolution of the Flipper
B 33. C 34. D 35. A
根据第一段中“When a group feeds this way, it is a well-timed sequence (顺序) of behaviors that requires communication and cooperation, which is even more evidence of their high social intelligence.(当一群鲸鱼以这种方式进食时,这是一系列时机精准的行为(顺序),需要沟通与合作,这更是它们高度社会智慧的又一证明)”可知,气泡网捕食是群体行为,需要鲸鱼之间沟通与合作,像团队一样密切配合。
根据第五段中“However, it was shocking to discover that amongst thousands of turns from a variety of behavioral states, no other species of whale examined were achieving the turning performance required to create a bubble-net.(然而,令人震惊的是我们发现在来自多种行为状态的数千次转向中,被研究的其他鲸鱼物种都没有达到制造气泡网所需的转向表现)”可知,其他鲸类都无法完成制造气泡网所必需的高难度转向,而座头鲸却做到了,这一对比正是 Cameron最感到震惊之处。
根据第六段中““Even if other whale species are physically capable of making similar turns, they would need to spend significantly more energy to do so. Having to burn so much energy would make it an impractical feeding strategy,” said Cameron.(“即使其他鲸鱼物种在身体上能够做出类似的转向,它们也需要消耗更多的能量才能做到。必须燃烧这么多能量会使它成为一种不切实际的捕食策略,”Cameron说)”可知,其他鲸鱼即使能做类似转向,要消耗过多的能量,故其他鲸类不会采用气泡网捕食策略。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Bubble-net (气泡网) feeding is a hunting strategy that whales eating in groups use.(气泡网捕食是成群进食的鲸鱼所使用的一种狩猎策略)”可知,文章围绕气泡网捕食展开,介绍其群体合作过程,因此最适合的标题是Bubble-net Feeding: A Unique Strategy。
Though refusal often emerges in moments of difficulty and vulnerability (脆弱), it’s a crucial step in healing (治愈) and transformation. ____36____ If we want to create a vision, we must reframe our assumptions. Creativity and change may draw upon hard work and optimism — but they are rooted in refusal.
____37____ After all, we’re regularly encouraged to “think positive” and accept our circumstances as part of healing. As writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin reminds us: “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” But Baldwin also said, “The world is before you, and you need not take it or leave it as it was when you came in.” Facing reality doesn’t mean approving of it. It means recognizing it for what it is, so we can decide how to respond. ____38____
Once we’ve seen reality clearly, we can refuse to leave it as it is. In this sense, refusal is what ignites (点燃) healing and change. It’s what generates creativity.
Put simply, creativity begins with refusal. ____39____ At the most basic level, to play a song is to refuse the silence or sound that would have existed without it. To paint, to dance, to compose, to perform: These are acts of creation, but they are also acts of refusal.
The artists refuse to believe that everything is fine as it is. They refuse to believe that a change wouldn’t be better. They refuse to believe they can’t be part of starting that change. ____40____ They change what is into something else.
In short, every creative act begins with a refusal to leave the world as it is. Creativity begins with saying “no” to how things are so that we can imagine something else. Far from being an end, this emphatic “no” is a vital first step toward change.
A. But refusal can also be hard.
B. This may appear illogical at first.
C. As a result, they create something.
D. Artists have long demonstrated this.

A Wake-Up Call on Screen Time
A recent school survey on children’s screen time reveals some worrying figures.
According to the results of the survey, only 15% of parents allow their kids less than one hour of screen time daily, 34% permit 1—2 hours, while a shocking 51% allow their kids over 3 hours of screen time every day.
As we all know, not only does excessive screen use harm children’s eyesight, sleep, and concentration, but it also reduces their physical activity and face-to-face social time.
In my view, it is necessary that parents should set clear daily limits, encourage outdoor play, and lead by example. Schools can also promote tech-free challenges. Balance is key — let’s protect our children’s health before it’s too late.

I’ve lived next door to an elderly man for about two years. He’s a really nice guy — quiet, keeps to himself, and lives alone. We’re not close friends, but we smile and greet each other when we cross paths, and I’ve always liked that easy neighbourly distance.
Last week, on rubbish collection day, I noticed something strange. His green bins (垃圾桶) were still inside the front gate, even though the truck was already thundering down the street. I knew he sometimes forgot, and I figured he might be unwell or just distracted. Without a second thought, I walked over, opened the gate, wheeled both bins out to the pavement, and went back inside. It took less than two minutes. I didn’t think anything of it — just a small, ordinary kindness.
However, it wasn’t ordinary, as I’d soon learn.
What I didn’t know was that my neighbour had gone away on a golf trip with his old friends. He’d be out of reach for days. And his daughter, who worried about him, had installed a Ring camera above the front door a few months earlier. Unfortunately, its angle was narrow — it caught the gate and the path, but not the pavement where I’d placed the bins. So the footage (录像), when she checked it remotely, showed only one thing: a man in a grey jacket entering her father’s property, disappearing from view, and later leaving. No bins, no context and no friendly wave.
She posted the clip to our local Facebook group — a page I didn’t even know — asking if anyone recognised the "suspicious person". By the time I woke up the next morning, that post had already been shared dozens of times.
At 7 am, I was suddenly awakened by a firm knock on my door. I went downstairs in my pyjama bottoms, still half asleep, and opened it to find two police officers. One of them held up his phone with a freeze frame (截图) of my jacket.
“Sir, were you at 42 Elm Street yesterday morning?”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
I was shocked for a second, and a wave of fear washed over me.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Later that week, my neighbour came back.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I was shocked for a second, and a wave of fear washed over me. “Oh-oh, the bins,” I said, suddenly wide awake. “His bins were still inside. I just moved them out. That’s all.” I must have sounded nervous, because the officers both relaxed within a minute. One of them even chuckled. They checked my ID, called the daughter to explain, and left with a handshake and an apology. But by then, the damage had been done. Half the street had already seen the Facebook post, and I could feel eyes on me from behind curtains.
Later that week, my neighbor came back. He knocked on my door, looking genuinely upset — almost embarrassed. He apologized to me over and over again — for the camera, for his daughter’s panic, for the police, and for the Facebook drama. “My daughter really overreacted,” he kept saying. I told him it was fine, but the more he apologized, the more awkward I felt. “Next time, just leave the bins. I’ll pay the fine,” he said. We stood on the driveway, shook hands warmly, and laughed heartily.

A. Experience. B. Understand. C. Recommend. D. Abandon.

E. The seeds of creative change lie in that decision.
F. It discourages us from creating something new.
G. It also lies at the heart of creativity and innovation.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
I was shocked for a second, and a wave of fear washed over me.
