Some people are direct speakers and they say “No” without thinking twice in many situations. However, we do have to be polite. Then how should we say “No” politely?
When our teacher asks, “Do you have any questions?” The correct answers may be like this: “No, I don’t have any, because your lesson was very clear.” or “Not now, but I might have some later when I try to do my homework.”
On a plane, when a flight attendant (乘务员) asks, “Do you need coffee?” An answer like “Thanks, I’m fine.” is OK. Here, the speaker doesn’t use the word “No” but sends the message that coffee isn’t wanted. Another answer would suggest something else the attendant can bring, “No, thanks. But I’d like some water.”
It may be more difficult to say “No” to a friend’s request. In this case, we would normally explain the reason.
“Ryan, can I borrow your bicycle tomorrow?”
“I’m sorry, but I need it to go to my office.”
It’s also difficult to say “No” to an invitation. We might say we’d like to accept it to be polite.
“Ryan, can you join us for dinner this Saturday?”
“I wish I could, but I have other plans.”
Here, we express the idea that we want to accept the invitation. But we don’t need to give details (细节) of our plans.
19. When a teacher asks “Do you have any questions?”, which answer shows you’re polite?
A. No, I don’t. B. I have no idea now.
C. No, because of your unclear lesson. D. Not now, but I might have some later.
20. When a flight attendant asks if you need coffee, you can say “Thanks, I’m fine.” to ________.
A. show you are well B. ask for other drinks
C. show you don’t want coffee D. invite the attendant to talk
21. When turning down an invitation, what should you do first?
A. Accept it. B. Show other messages.
C. Give a detailed reason. D. Say we’d like to accept it.
22. What can you know from the text?
A. Americans like saying “No” to friends. B. Being polite is important when saying “No”.
C. Saying “No” is always simple. D. Refusing others needs a detailed plan.
【答案】19. D 20. C 21. D 22. B

六、阅读与表达(共4小题,71-73小题,每小题2分,74小题4分;满分10分)
阅读下面的材料,根据内容回答问题。
Everyone knows that there are four skills in learning a language. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. People usually think speaking is the most important. However, what’s the answer to the following questions? What do you have to do before you can speak? What does a child learn before he talks? What do we do before chatting? The answer is listening, of course!
In English learning, we don’t pay enough attention to listening. We have one mouth but two ears! So we should listen twice as much as we speak. Have you ever asked yourself, “How did I learn my own language?” In fact, you never really learned it at all—you just started speaking it. But this speaking is the result of hearing your native language for two or three years. Words go into your head and then they come out of your head. That is why listening to English as much as possible is so important to you now. The more English you put in, the more you’ll get out!
There are two pieces of advice about improving your listening. The first is that you shouldn’t worry if you don’t understand every word. The second is to be a good listener. To be a good listener, you should face the speaker, look at the speaker and let him or her know you are listening.
51. How many skills are there in learning a language?

Lacquer fans are made with bamboo or wooden frames (框架). Traditionally, they are painted with different themes and patterns (图案), such as flowers and birds, and people, to make them more beautiful. Although the ways of making fans continue to improve, workers still use traditional techniques (技艺) to create lacquer fans, keeping this ancient art alive.
Nowadays, lacquer fan painting is one of the most popular activities among people. The process is quite simple. People first choose the colors they want to use, drop the colored lacquer into the water, stir (搅拌) it, put the fans in the water for a while, and then take them out. And that’s it.
Many people like lacquer fans. Every fan is unique (独一无二的), like each of us.
