The link between sports and reading may not be apparent, but for certain young people, it’s meaningful. Kids who’re passionate about sports can use reading to learn more about their favorite teams and players, discover a new sport they were unfamiliar with, or even get inspired to pursue a career in athletics.
Many kids love playing sports but being a professional athlete can be challenging. For instance, what occurs when a kid who loves basketball realizes he might not be tall enough to make it on the court? For Amar Shah, that same realization didn’t kill his dream — rather, it guided him toward an unexpected alternative.
Shah, a journalist and author of the graphic novel Wish I Was a Baller, turned his passion for the Orlando Magic into a writing career that began in eighth grade. “I knew I couldn’t make it as a basketball player,” Shah laughed. “So, I found my closest way to the court — through journalism.” That choice contributed to incredible opportunities. While still in high school, Shah interviewed NBA legends like Shaquille O’Neal, and the late Kobe Bryant.
Just as Shah learned when he was younger, kids can apply reading and writing to remain connected to the sport they love. From writing game recaps (摘要) to reading the sports section of the local paper, there’re numerous ways to work in sports without competing. In Wish I Was a Baller, Shah shared his professional journey, writing: “Whatever your dreams are, continue going after them, because you never know where they’ll take you.”
Many sports enthusiasts enjoy reading books about the game they love. From player autobiographies (自传) to fictional tournaments, there’s something for everyone. 13-year-old Scholastic Kids Press reporter Asher Freije is a sports fan who enjoys reading. “Find books on the sport you love. If you love that sport, you will most likely love that book, because it’s something you already enjoy,” he said, sharing that a book about wrestling once “inspired my new interest in that sport”.
4. What made Shah finally choose a career in journalism?
A. His physical limitation. B. His talent for reporting.
C. His journalistic interest. D. His admiration for athletes.
5. What does the example of Shah mainly show?
A. A tip for interviewing stars. B. The significance of reading.
C. A way to stay close to sports. D. The benefit of writing books.
6. Why did Shah share his professional journey in his book?
A. To show his excellent writing skills.
B. To increase others’ interest in sports.
C. To share his effort to realize his dream.
D. To encourage his readers to keep going.
7. What might be Asher Freije’s opinion about reading?
A. It can make you succeed. B. It can inspire new interests.
C. It offers a sense of purpose. D. It gets you physically active.
A 5. C 6. D 7. B
根据第二段中“For instance, what occurs when a kid who loves basketball realizes he might not be tall enough to make it on the court? For Amar Shah, that same realization didn’t kill his dream — rather, it guided him toward an unexpected alternative.(例如,当一个热爱篮球的孩子意识到自己身高也许不足以站上赛场时会发生什么?对Amar Shah来说,这个认知并没有摧毁他的梦想,反而指引他找到了意想不到的备选道路。)”以及第三段中““I knew I couldn’t make it as a basketball player,” Shah laughed. “So, I found my closest way to the court — through journalism.”(“我知道自己没法成为篮球运动员,”沙阿笑着说,“所以,我找到了离赛场最近的方式——新闻报道。”)”
根据第四段中“Just as Shah learned when he was younger, kids can apply reading and writing to remain connected to the sport they love.(正如Shah年少时领悟到的那样,孩子们可以借助读写,继续和自己热爱的运动保持联系。)”
根据第四段中“Whatever your dreams are, continue going after them, because you never know where they’ll take you.(无论你的梦想是什么,都要继续追逐,因为你永远不知道它会带你去往何方。)”
根据第五段中““Find books on the sport you love. If you love that sport, you will most likely love that book, because it’s something you already enjoy,” he said, sharing that a book about wrestling once “inspired my new interest in that sport”.(“去找你热爱的这项运动相关的书籍。如果你喜爱这项运动,你很可能会喜欢那本书,因为它和你本来就喜爱的事物有关。” 他说道。他还分享,一本关于摔跤的书曾经“激发了我对这项运动新的兴趣”。)”可知,Asher Freije认为阅读可以激发新的兴趣。

While tigers have faced a population decline due to human activity, the big cats in India have made a dramatic comeback, the BBC reports. The population has doubled over the last 10 years thanks to targeted conservation efforts. The country is home to approximately 3,682 tigers today, which is the largest tiger population in the world.
According to the India House Foundation, the tiger population had dropped below 1,900 in 1972. A combination of illegal hunting, shrinking habitats, and increasing conflict with humans contributed to the decline of the species. Therefore, India launched Project Tiger in 1973. The initiative created protected reserves, specialized guard forces, and a “core-buffer (缓冲区)” strategy that balanced conservation with nearby human activity. As a result, India not only protected the big cats from illegal hunting and habitat loss, but also ensured they had access to habitats that were rich in food.
Though India’s tigers have learned to live among roughly 60 million people, including farming communities and rural settlements, the process has presented some conflict. To reduce tension, the researchers highlighted the importance of financial compensation (补偿) programs for communities that share resources with tigers. And they note many of these communities already enjoy an economic boost from an increase in eco-tourism.
Large meat-eating animals are often believed to struggle in densely (稠密) populated areas, but the findings showed that tigers were able to recover even in areas where they lived near large human populations when conditions were suitable. “We think human densities are detrimental to conservation of large meat-eating animals like tigers. But more than density it is the attitude of people that matters,” Yadvendradev Vikramsinh Jhala, the study’s lead author, tells the BBC.
Following this success, conservationists in India are expanding their efforts to protect other endangered wildlife. Projects are already underway to support elephant, snow leopard, and crocodile populations. Wildlife conservationists and ecologists in India are going to share data with other scientists to benefit wildlife globally.
8. Why did India start Project Tiger?
A. To restore the tiger population. B. To make way for human activity.
C. To eliminate human-tiger conflicts. D. To relocate tigers to protected reserves.
9. What can be inferred about India’s tiger conservation efforts?
A. They have forced residents to leave. B. They require little ongoing investment.
C. They boost growth in local agriculture. D. They haven’t been completely smooth.
10. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Unfavorable. B. Equal. C. Restricted. D. Responsive.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Tracking more success examples. B. Identifying the endangered species.
C. Expanding India’s conservation model. D. Displaying benefits of protecting animals.
A 9. D 10. A 11. C
根据第二段“According to the India House Foundation, the tiger population had dropped below 1,900 in 1972. A combination of illegal hunting, shrinking habitats, and increasing conflict with humans contributed to the decline of the species. Therefore, India launched Project Tiger in 1973.(据印度之家基金会称,1972年老虎的数量已降至1900只以下。非法狩猎、栖息地缩小以及与人类冲突加剧等因素导致了该物种的衰退。因此,印度于1973年启动了“老虎项目”)”可知,老虎数量锐减,印度启动该项目来恢复老虎种群数量。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Though India’s tigers have learned to live among roughly 60 million people, including farming communities and rural settlements, the process has presented some conflict.(尽管印度的老虎已经学会与大约6000万居民共处,包括农业社区和农村定居点,但这一过程也引发了一些冲突)”可知,保护过程出现人虎冲突,说明保护工作并非一帆风顺。
根据倒数第二段划线词前文“Large meat-eating animals are often believed to struggle in densely (稠密) populated areas, but the findings showed that tigers were able to recover even in areas where they lived near large human populations when conditions were suitable.(人们通常认为大型食肉动物在人口密集地区生存困难,但研究结果表明,即使在靠近大量人类聚居区的区域,只要条件适宜,老虎仍能成功恢复)”以及划线词后文“But more than density it is the attitude of people that matters(但比起密度,更重要的是人们的态度)”可知,人们原本认为人口密度对老虎保护不利,但更重要的是人们的态度。
根据最后一段“Following this success, conservationists in India are expanding their efforts to protect other endangered wildlife. Projects are already underway to support elephant, snow leopard, and crocodile populations. Wildlife conservationists and ecologists in India are going to share data with other scientists to benefit wildlife globally.(在取得这一成功之后,印度的环保人士正在扩大保护其他濒危野生动物的努力。目前已有项目启动,以支持大象、雪豹和鳄鱼种群的生存。印度的野生动物保护专家和生态学家将与其他科学家分享数据,以促进全球野生动物的保护)”可知,本段讲印度把老虎保护经验拓展到其他濒危物种,分享数据惠及全球野生动物。

AI systems are often described as “brain-like” because they can predict activity in parts of the brain that help us recognize objects. Until now, scientists mostly tested this in one direction. Researchers from York University wanted to determine whether these systems truly operate like biological vision.
The researchers reversed (反向开展) that familiar test. If AI genuinely reflects the brain, they reasoned, then recorded brain activity should also predict the model’s internal responses.
The researchers tested the models with 1,320 natural photographs and realistic synthetic (合成的) images. The set included bears, elephants, faces, apples, cars, dogs, chairs, planes, birds, and zebras shown against indoor, outdoor, and other natural backgrounds. They also used 300 additional images describing the same objects in changed forms, including outlines, drawings, simplified representations, and artistic variations. This broader range helped test whether the relationship between brain activity and AI features held across different visual styles.
“The results were striking. While AI models can predict the neurons (神经元) we recorded in the brain fairly well, the reverse is not true. Interestingly, this is not the case when neurons from one brain are compared against ones from another brain, and the one-sided imbalance disappears,” says York University Assistant Professor Kohitij Kar.
This imbalance suggests that AI models may reach correct visual answers through processes that differ from those used by the brain. Kar warns that the mismatch could widen as models become more complex. If an AI model predicts neurons but its own internal features cannot be predicted from neural activity, it may not provide a reliable explanation of how the brain works.
Researchers increasingly use AI models to design studies of human behavior, including clinical research. Much of that work assumes the systems process the world like the brain.
More accurate brain-like models could eventually support research involving conditions related to the brain. For now, however, using systems that do not match brain function well to interpret human behavior carries risks. Comparable models are also being applied to hearing, language and movement, making reliable testing important across several fields.
12. What did most previous studies focus on concerning AI models?
A. How the brain genuinely reflected them. B. How they were integrated into the brain.
C. Whether they could predict brain activity. D. Whether they took control of the neurons.
13. What does the brain fail to do in the reverse test?
A. Recognize objects in natural photographs. B. Process visual information like AI models.
C. Forecast neurons from another similar brain. D. Equally predict AI models’ internal features.
14. Why is clinical research mentioned in paragraph 6?
A. To doubt the reliability of current AI models. B. To highlight the significance of the reverse test.
C. To sing high praises for technological advances. D. To prove the similarity between AI and the brain.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Novel Test on Advanced AI Models B. Brain-Like AI Models Matter in Research
C. AI Models May Not Think Like the Brain D. A Way to Improve AI’s Prediction Accuracy
C 13. D 14. B 15. C
根据第一段“AI systems are often described as “brain-like” because they can predict activity in parts of the brain that help us recognize objects. Until now, scientists mostly tested this in one direction.(人工智能系统常被描述为“类脑”的,因为它们能够预测大脑中帮助我们识别物体的区域活动。直到现在,科学家们主要从这一个方向进行测试)”可知,到目前为止,先前的研究大多单向测试AI能否预测大脑活动。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“While AI models can predict the neurons (神经元) we recorded in the brain fairly well, the reverse is not true.(虽然AI模型可以相当准确地预测我们记录到的大脑神经元,但反过来则不然)”可知,反向测试中大脑无法同等预测AI模型的内部特征。
根据倒数第二段“Researchers increasingly use AI models to design studies of human behavior, including clinical research. Much of that work assumes the systems process the world like the brain.(研究人员越来越多地使用人工智能模型来设计人类行为研究,包括临床研究。其中大部分工作都假设这些系统像大脑一样处理世界)”可知,举临床研究例子,凸显反向测试的重要意义。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合倒数第三段“This imbalance suggests that AI models may reach correct visual answers through processes that differ from those used by the brain.(这种失衡表明,AI模型可能通过不同于大脑所采用的机制来获得正确的视觉答案)”可知,本文核心是介绍研究发现AI模型的运行机制可能和生物大脑并不相同。
In today’s busy life, priorities come first. A typical to-do list usually contains work-related activities, shopping, cleaning, and then maybe self-care. But a new popular trend is looking to make self-care a daily habit that doesn’t fall on the bottom of the list. This trend is known as wellness stacking, according to Healthline. ____16____ Use the good habits you’re already doing and build on them to do even more.
____17____ According to mental health professionals, designed to give you small wins, wellness stacking is a healthy way to support emotional well-being. “From a mental-health perspective, wellness stacking is more sustainable because it centers on small, realistic habits rather than extreme routines,” said Andrea Gleim, a psychologist.
Additionally, rather than dramatic reinventions of yourself, wellness stacking builds on the top of your already existing routine, according to Vogue Singapore. All you need to do is add a self-care habit to an existing wellness behavior. ____18____
To build effective stacking, plan what you want to incorporate and how it fits with your current routine. Look at your day and pinpoint (精准找到) consistent activities — showering, brushing your teeth, housework, etc. ____19____ For instance, while waiting for the kettle to boil, do a 60-second stretch, and whenever you check your phone, take three deep breaths.
The key to wellness stacking is to start with just one habit and once it becomes routine, add an additional one. ____20____ “Those small habits create small wins, which boost motivation and reinforce the behavior over time,” said Gleim. “Our brains love patterns, and wellness stacking turns self-care into a simple, repeatable rhythm instead of a long list of disconnected tasks.”
A. But is this trend effective?
B. And can you keep this routine up?
C. Taking baby steps is the way to successfully build your stack.
D. Combining wellness behaviors together makes it easier to stick.
E. It’s the practice of linking two or more self-care habits together.
F. Start wellness stacking and soon you will build a reliable system.
G. Then think of a small wellness habit you can attach to these activities.
E 17. A 18. D 19. G 20. C

Fashion is often defined by global runways, luxury houses and seasonal trends. But in the mountains of Southwest China’s Guizhou province, a different vision is taking shape — one ____36____ (root) in craftsmanship and community.
For designer Yang Chunlin, fashion is not something imported from Paris, Milan, London or New York, but something ____37____ grows out of local ethnic culture.
That ____38____ (believe) sits at the heart of “Village T”, or “Village Runway”, a grassroots fashion initiative Yang launched two years ago. It began as a small runway in an open field, where a ridge (垄) of farmland became the catwalk and villagers ____39____ (step) naturally into the role of models. As the project expanded, it later moved into larger cultural spaces, eventually ____40____ (appear) on national platforms such as ____41____ 2026 Spring Festival Gala and in international cultural exchange events, including the Paris Fair in France.
“There ____42____ (be) no resources, no team, no experience, and many voices of doubt,” Yang recalled the early days.
He said many locals ____43____ (initial) believed fashion had nothing to do with them. “People in the mountains have rich culture and craftsmanship, but we often lack confidence and underestimate what we’re capable ____44____,” he added.
For Yang, that perception gap was precisely why the project mattered — to create a stage for people from his hometown ____45____ (see) on their own terms.
As “Village T” grew, it became a platform for showing Guizhou’s intangible cultural heritage, particularly Miao embroidery and Dong brocade.
36. rooted
37. that 38. belief
39. stepped
40. appearing
41. the 42. were
43. initially
44. of 45. to be seen

Photography has long been my favorite hobby and I’m always eager to record beautiful moments of nature with my camera.
One morning, I was walking slowly along the lake near my neighborhood, expecting to capture a good moment, when I heard a weak and painful cry coming from the thick grass by the bank. Curious and concerned, I walked closer and found a little white egret (白鹭) trapped in an abandoned boat. Its wing was badly hurt, and it was struggling helplessly, unable to escape. Out of pity, I tried every means to free it without causing further injury. Finally, I rescued the poor creature and took it home temporarily.
My mother works at a local animal hospital. She gave the egret simple and careful treatment immediately. Meanwhile, I used a large cardboard box to build a warm nest for it on the balcony. With good care, the egret gradually regained its strength, but recovered very slowly from the injury to its wing.
The egret’s pure white feathers and elegant postures fascinated me deeply. Suddenly an idea occurred to me: If I could keep the rare and beautiful wild bird and take a series of exquisite (精美的) photos of it when it grew bigger, I could participate in the city’s photography competition and definitely win the grand prize. The prize money was exactly enough to cover the cost of my long-awaited professional camera. However, staring at the egret’s clear eyes and recalling how it struggled in pain before the rescue, I hesitated. Wild animals should belong in nature instead of being personal possessions. Finally, I firmly gave up this idea and decided to release it into the wild after it fully recovered.
One afternoon, I returned home after school as usual. Shockingly, the cardboard nest was empty and the window was wide open. Thinking the egret must have flown away alone but hadn’t fully recovered from the injury, I felt a sharp sense of loss and worry.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Moments later, I received a call from my mother.

A month later, my mother and I returned to the lake to set the egret free.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Moments later, I received a call from my mother. She told me the egret was safe. She had found it near the hospital and brought it back for further treatment. Relieved, I rushed to the clinic. Seeing the bird resting quietly in a warm cage, its injured wing properly bandaged, I felt my worry melt away. Over the next few weeks, I visited it every day, watching its wing heal and its strength return. The idea of winning the photography prize gradually faded. Instead, I felt a deeper sense of fulfillment — one that came from caring for a life rather than capturing it.
A month later, my mother and I returned to the lake to set the egret free. As I opened the cage, the egret hesitated for a moment, then stepped onto the grass. It stretched its wings, now fully healed, and took off gracefully into the sky. Watching it fly freely, I felt a surge of joy and pride. I realized that true beauty lies not in possessing something rare, but in giving it back to where it belongs. That day, I took my best photo ever — not with my camera, but with my heart.
