Bertha Ngumbi, my mother, is one of the kindest women I know. However, when I was a child growing up in Kenya with my four siblings (兄弟姐妹), her kindness often annoyed us. Whenever visitors came to our home, whether relatives or strangers, expected or not, my mother would ask us to prepare and serve them black tea. If visitors arrived during lunch or dinner, she would invite them to eat with us, which meant less food for the family. As children, we felt unhappy and sometimes even complained about it.
My sister Faith especially disliked those moments when we had little firewood or when the wood was wet from rain, because making tea became difficult. My sisters and I even believed that some people took advantage of our mother’s generosity by appearing at mealtime.
Years later, after moving to the United States to live and teach, I began to see things differently. My mother’s kindness had deeply influenced me. Even when I struggled myself, I still tried to help relatives, friends, and even strangers. If unexpected visitors came to my house one day, I would warmly offer them tea and food, just as my mother always did.
Wanting to understand the source of her kindness, I asked my mother about it. She explained that she had learned it from her own mother, my grandmother. Growing up in a large family with eight siblings, my mother often returned home from school to discover that some of their lunch had been given away to hungry travelers. Although the children were upset at times, their mother continued helping others whenever she could.
When I asked my mother whether she would have changed if she had known we disliked her generosity, she answered firmly that she would never stop helping people. Today, I fully understand her actions and remain deeply grateful for the compassion (同情) she planted in me.
24. Why did the author dislike unexpected visitors when she was young?

C. To understand its origin. D. To change her mother’s mind.

A. From not understanding it to valuing it.

Zhang Xue is a key figure in China’s motorcycle industry. He founded ZXMOTO, a Chinese motorcycle brand that made history in 2026 by winning two straight races at the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) in Portugal. His journey is a true underdog story.
Born in 1987 in a poor mountain village in Hunan Province, Zhang dropped out of school at 14 and worked as a repair shop apprentice (学徒). He learned engines by taking them apart with his own hands. At 19, eager to prove himself, he chased a TV crew’s car for over 100 kilometers through pouring rain on a broken motorcycle. The crew laughed at him, but his courage earned him a spot on TV. That led to a job as a rider and mechanic.
Realizing he started racing too late to become a champion rider, Zhang changed his goal, “If I cannot ride the fastest bike, I will build one.” In 2013, he arrived in Chongqing with only 20,000 yuan (about 2,900 USD), bought parts, and built his first bike. In 2017 he co-founded Kove Moto, which grew into a major brand. But in 2024, after leaving Kove, he started ZXMOTO — his own company, named after his name.
Zhang’s years of devotion to motorcycle engineering has finally borne fruit. In March 2026, French rider Valentin Debise rode the ZXMOTO 820 RR-RS to two straight wins at WSBK, beating Ducati and Yamaha by nearly four seconds — the first ever race wins for a Chinese manufacturer. Watching from the sidelines, Zhang was moved to tears.
Today, ZXMOTO is valued at over one billion yuan. Zhang once said, “The world had no impression of Chinese motorcycles. Now they will remember us.” His story — from a motorcycle apprentice to a pioneer of Chinese motorsports — proves that passion can move mountains.
28. Why is Zhang’s childhood experience mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To highlight his poor life in childhood.
B. To explain the origin of his career.
C. To show his early interest in engines.
D. To stress his disadvantage in education.
29. What was Zhang’s original goal?
A. To become a top motorbike rider.
B. To build the fastest motorbike.
C. To work as a motorbike apprentice.
D. To set up a top motorbike brand.
30. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Zhang’s devotion to his career. B. The performance of the motorbike.
C. The reward for Zhang’s efforts. D. Valentin’s performance in the race.
31. Which of the following is true of Zhang’s story?
A. When in Rome, do as Romans do.
B. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
D. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

In recent years, bubble tea shops and fried-food stands have become ubiquitous in cities across China. These snacks, once occasional treats, are now consumed daily by millions of young people. The boom (繁荣) is partly fueled by aggressive marketing (激进营销) and social media influencers, who make these products look trendy (时髦的) and appealing. However, health experts are sounding the alarm: the excessive intake of sugar, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives is harmful to adolescent health.
A typical cup of bubble tea contains about 30 to 60 grams of sugar, exceeding the daily recommended limit for teenagers, which is no more than 25 grams according to the World Health Organization. Combined with the high calories from deep-fried chicken and potato chips, this diet contributes to a sharp rise in obesity rates. Moreover, frequent consumption of fried foods introduces trans fatty acids, which increase the risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) diseases. Even more troubling is that many teenagers replace regular meals with these snacks, missing out on essential nutrients like protein, fiber, and vitamins.
The problem is not just physical. Studies have shown that a diet high in processed sugars and fats can also affect mental health, leading to mood swings(情绪波动)and decreased concentration in class. Some experts compare this trend to an “epidemic” (盛行) of unhealthy eating habits, which may have long-term consequences including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. A recent survey revealed that 70% of high school students consume these items weekly, but most are unaware of the calorie counts and health risks.
Fortunately, there are simple steps to reverse the trend. Parents and schools can encourage teenagers to drink plain water or milk instead of bubble tea, and choose baked or grilled foods over fried ones. Small changes, such as eating more fruits and vegetables, can make a big difference. As the saying goes, “You are what you eat.” It is time for young people to think twice before they order that sweet, crispy snack.
32. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. rare B. common C. harmful D. expensive
33. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a health problem caused by these snacks?
A. Obesity. B. Heart disease.
C. Improved mental health. D. Type 2 diabetes.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards the popularity of bubble tea and fried foods?
A. Supportive. B. Indifferent. C. Concerned. D. Optimistic.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Rise of Fast Food Restaurants.
B. Bubble Tea and Fried Foods: A Health Warning.
C. Healthy Eating Habits for Teenagers.
D. The Importance of Physical Exercise.

Your friends mean the world to you, and the last thing you want to do is upset them. ___36___ So, how do you apologize to a friend you really hurt? We’ve consulted psychologists and a life coach on how to apologize sincerely. By following their steps and tips, you can mend your friendship.
Reach out to them to talk about what happened. If you’re truly sorry for what occurred, don’t hesitate to be the one to approach your friend — don’t wait for them to come to you. ___37___ This proves you truly care and take responsibility for your actions. Remember, only apologize if you’re really sorry; otherwise, your apology will come across as insincere.
Acknowledge their emotions. Round out your apology by expressing an understanding of your friend’s feelings. No matter what happened, it’s important to recognize that they’ve been hurt. Show that you’re aware of how your actions made them feel. Licensed Clinical Psychologist Gera Anderson says, “Acknowledge their feelings and any actions that may have led to those feelings. If you regret your actions, apologize for them. ___38___”
Include your commitment into your apology. Show your friend that their friendship means a lot to you by assuring not to make a similar mistake again. For instance, “I missed your birthday party. I made a promise to you but dropped it. ___39___” Just remember, actions speak louder than words. So go through with your swears.
___40___ While it may sound sorrowful, knowing that your friend doesn’t have to accept your apology is a must. Rather than trapping them in a corner or flooding them with apologies, give them the space to walk away. Giving an apology doesn’t mean they are obligated to forgive you. So, be patient and accepting of however they respond.
A. Give your friend an out.
B. I won’t take my words so lightly again.
C. Make your apology as specific as possible.
D. Set aside your pride and be the bigger person.
E. But mistakes happen, whether you want them to or not.
F. If you don’t, apologize for the fact that your actions hurt them.
G. You have to know that I was included in a sudden work meeting.

People often say that “failure is the mother of success.” This cliché (陈词滥调) might have some truth to it, but it _____41_____ tells us how to actually turn a loss into a win, says Emmanuel Manalo, a professor of educational psychology at Kyoto University in Japan. As a result, he says, “we know we shouldn’t give up when we fail—but _____42_____, we do.”
Manalo and Manu Kapur, a professor of learning sciences at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, put together a special issue of the journal Thinking Skills and Creativity last December on _____43_____ failure. The issue’s 15 studies provide teachers and educational researchers with a guide for _____44_____ success. One study reported, for example, that the sooner and more often students fail at a task, such as building a robot, the sooner they can _____45_____ and improve. Another confirmed that feedback on failures is most _____46_____ when the giver comes across as caring, and the receiver is prepared to weather negative emotions.
Manalo and his co-authors also contributed their own study focused on overcoming one fundamental, everyday form of failure: not _____47_____ a task. They asked 131 undergraduates to write an essay about their school experiences. Half of the students received _____48_____ for structuring their writing, and half were left to their own devices. All, however, were _____49_____ prior to finishing. Afterward the researchers found that those in the structured group were more motivated to complete their essays, compared with those who lacked guidance—even if the latter were _____50_____ to being done. Knowing how to finish, _____51_____, was more important than being close to finishing.
The researchers dubbed this finding “the Hemingway effect,” for the author’s self-reported _____52_____ to stop writing only when he knew what would happen next in the story—so as to avoid writer’s block when he returned to the page. Manalo believes that learning how to fail temporarily can help people avoid becoming _____53_____ failures at many tasks, such as completing an essay, learning a language or inventing a new technology.
Demystifying failure and teaching students not to _____54_____ it make goals more attainable, says Stephanie Couch, executive director of the Lemelson-MIT Program, a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and supporting inventors. Couch, whose work was also featured in the special issue, _____55_____ that we “should really be thinking of failure as part of a process of going forward toward success.”

After graduating from university, I began working as a programmer in a small software company. I loved coding (编码) and always hoped to design a cool app with complex functions to show my talent and ability. However, no idea had truly satisfied me.
One Friday afternoon, after a long day at work, I suddenly wanted to visit my grandma.
She lived alone in a small, sunny apartment. Grandma was cheerful and independent. She loved looking after her plants, drinking tea with her old friends and going to the book club every week. “Growing old doesn’t make me helpless,” she often said, lifting her chin (下巴) slightly. “I’m fully capable of handling things on my own.”
But in recent months, I had noticed some small changes. She sometimes forgot where she had put her glasses. Once, she watered the same flower pot twice. Another time, she wrote a shopping list carefully, but later could not find it anywhere.
When I arrived at Grandma’s apartment that Friday afternoon, Grandma was sitting beside her phone with a worried look. “Molly, dear,” she said, trying to smile, “Mrs. Green just called. I was supposed to meet her for tea this afternoon, but I completely forgot.”
“It’s all right, Grandma,” I said gently.
She let out an awkward little laugh, her face burning slightly. On the table lay a small notebook. In it, she had written reminders: take medicine, water the flowers, meet Mrs. Green for tea, book club on Friday… Some words were crossed out twice, while others were circled heavily.
“I can still manage,” Grandma said, as if reading my thoughts. Then she gave a soft sigh (叹气). “But sometimes I do wish something could remind me gently. Not loudly, not like an order — just like a friend.”
Her words stayed with me. Looking at her notebook, I suddenly felt that the app I had been looking for might be right here.
“Give me some time, Grandma,” I said with a smile. “I’ll bring you a little surprise.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Back home, I sat before my computer, no longer thinking about a cool app.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next Friday, I brought the finished app to Grandma’s apartment.

A. They interrupted family activities.
B. Her family had to share meals with them.
C. They always asked for more black tea.
D. Her siblings needed to serve them food first.
25. What did the author do after moving to the US?
A. She avoided bothering others.
B. She lived a poor life for a long time.
C. She kept complaining about her mother.
D. She was friendly towards others.
26. Why did the author ask her mother about her kindness?
A. To memorize her childhood. B. To express her gratitude.
C. To understand its origin. D. To change her mother’s mind.
27. How did the author’s attitude to her mother’s kindness change over time?
A. From not understanding it to valuing it.
B. From seeing it as a shame to a road map.
C. From supporting it to complaining about it.
D. From taking it lightly to viewing it as a trouble.
B 25. D 26. C 27. A

B 29. A 30. C 31. D

根据第二段“Born in 1987 in a poor mountain village in Hunan Province, Zhang dropped out of school at 14 and worked as a repair shop apprentice (学徒). He learned engines by taking them apart with his own hands. At 19, eager to prove himself, he chased a TV crew’s car for over 100 kilometers through pouring rain on a broken motorcycle. The crew laughed at him, but his courage earned him a spot on TV. That led to a job as a rider and mechanic.(1987年,张雪出生在湖南一个贫困山村。
根据第三段中的“Realizing he started racing too late to become a champion rider, Zhang changed his goal.(意识到自己接触赛车太晚,无法成为冠军车手,张雪转变了目标。)”
第四段首句“Zhang’s years of devotion to motorcycle engineering has finally borne fruit.(多年深耕摩托车研发的付出终于开花结果。)”
根据文末“His story — from a motorcycle apprentice to a pioneer of Chinese motorsports — proves that passion can move mountains.(他从学徒成长为中国摩托运动先驱的故事证明热爱能够创造奇迹。)”
D
B 33. C 34. C 35. B

These snacks, once occasional treats, are now consumed daily by millions of young people.(近年来,奶茶店和油炸小吃摊在中国各个城市变得ubiquitous。

Moreover, frequent consumption of fried foods introduces trans fatty acids, which increase the risk of cardiovascular 以及第三段“Some experts compare this trend to an “epidemic” (盛行) of unhealthy eating habits, which may have long-term consequences including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.(一些专家将这一趋势比作不健康饮食习惯的“流行病”,它可能引发包括2型糖尿病、高血压在内的长期健康隐患。)”可知,肥胖、心脏病、二型糖尿病都是小吃引发的健康问题;再根据第三段“Studies have shown that a diet high in processed sugars and fats can also affect mental health, leading to mood swings(情绪波动)and decreased concentration in class.(研究表明高糖高脂饮食会损害心理健康,造成情绪波动、课堂注意力下降。)” A.
根据第一段“However, health experts are sounding the alarm: the excessive intake of sugar, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives is harmful to adolescent health.(然而健康专家已发出警告:过量摄入糖分、不健康脂肪与人工添加剂会损害青少年健康。)”
根据第一段“However, health experts are sounding the alarm: the excessive intake of sugar, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives is harmful to adolescent health.(然而健康专家已发出警告:过量摄入糖分、不健康脂肪与人工添加剂会损害青少年健康。)” 所以B项“Bubble Tea and Fried Foods: A Health Warning(奶茶与油炸食品:一份健康警示)”符合文意。
E 37. D 38. F 39. B 40. A
根据上文“Your friends mean the world to you, and the last thing you want to do is upset them.(你的朋友对你来说意义重大,你最不想做的事就是让他们生气)”以及后文“So, how do you apologize to a friend you really hurt? We’ve consulted psychologists and a life coach on how to apologize sincerely. By following their steps and tips, you can mend your friendship.(那么,当你真的伤害了朋友时,该如何道歉呢?我们咨询了心理学家和人生教练,了解如何真诚地道歉。只要遵循他们的步骤和建议,你就能修复这段友谊)”可知,空前说明不想让朋友难过,空后提出如何给受伤的朋友道歉,E项“但不管你愿不愿意,错误总会发生”承接上下文,逻辑通顺。
【37题详解】
根据上文“Reach out to them to talk about what happened. If you’re truly sorry for what occurred, don’t hesitate to be the one to approach your friend — don’t wait for them to come to you.(主动联系他们,谈谈发生了什么。如果你真的为所发生的事感到抱歉,就不要犹豫,主动去接近你的朋友——别等他们来找你)”以及后文“This proves you truly care and take responsibility for your actions. Remember, only apologize if you’re really sorry; otherwise, your apology will come across as insincere.(这证明你确实关心并为自己的行为负责。请记住,只有当你真的感到后悔时才道歉;否则,你的道歉会显得不真诚)”可知,空前强调不要等待对方先开口,要主动联系对方,D项“放下骄傲,做更大度的人”符合主动认错的语境,与下文“证明你真心在乎并为行为负责”逻辑连贯。
【38题详解】
根据上文“Acknowledge their emotions. If you regret your actions, apologize for them.(承认他们的情绪。
根据上文“Include your commitment into your apology. Show your friend that their friendship means a lot to you by assuring not to make a similar mistake again. For instance, “I missed your birthday party. I made a promise to you but dropped it.(在道歉中表达你的承诺。向朋友表明,他们的友谊对你意义重大,并保证以后不会再犯同样的错误。例如:“我错过了你的生日派对,我曾向你许下承诺,但后来却没能兑现。”)”以及后文“Just remember, actions speak louder than words. So go through with your swears.(记住,行动胜于言语。所以,继续履行你的誓言吧)”可知,本段要求道歉要加入不再犯错的承诺,空前举例“我错过你的生日,答应你的事却没做到”,B项“我不会再轻视我的承诺了”承接例子,给出承诺,契合段落主题。
【40题详解】
根据后文“While it may sound sorrowful, knowing that your friend doesn’t have to accept your apology is a must. Rather than trapping them in a corner or flooding them with apologies, give them the space to walk away. Giving an apology doesn’t mean they are obligated to forgive you. So, be patient and accepting of however they respond.(虽然听起来可能令人难过,但知道朋友不必接受你的道歉是必要的。

A. undoubtedly无疑地;B. vividly生动地;C. hardly几乎不;D. intentionally故意地。
A. in reality事实上;B. by contrast相比之下;C. with question带着疑问;D. after all毕竟。 故选A。
A. running into撞上、遭遇;B. accounting for解释、占比;C. contributing to有助于;D. benefiting from受益于。根据下文“The issue’s 15 studies provide teachers and educational researchers with a guide(该问题的15项研究为教师和教育研究人员提供了指南)”并结合上文“how to actually turn a loss into a win”可知,这个特刊是从失败中“受益”的特刊,所以此处在介词on后用benefiting from表示“受益于”符合语境。
A. celebrating庆祝;B. evaluating评估;C. achieving实现;D. predicting预测。
A. move forward前进、进步;B. stand by袖手旁观;C. dash backward落后;D. run away跑开、逃走。 故选A。
根据下文的“when the giver comes across as caring, and the receiver is prepared to weather negative emotions.(当给予者表现出关怀,接受者准备好经受负面情绪时)”可知,这种情况下对于失败的反馈是最佳状态,即是有建设性意义的。
A. assigning分配;B. reporting报告;C. handling处理;D. completing完成。
A. grants津贴;B. approval赞同;C. instructions指导、说明;D. training培训。
A. stopped停止;B. examined检查;C. notified通知;D. guided指导。 故选A。

根据下文“when he knew what would happen next in the story(当他知道故事接下来会发生什么时)”可知,此处指发展趋势和倾向,所以用tendency表示停止写作的“倾向”,符合语境。
根据上文“learning how to fail temporarily”及下文“failures at many tasks, such as completing a dissertation, learning a language or inventing a new technology.(在许多任务上的失败,比如完成论文、学习一门语言或发明一项新技术)”可知,学习暂时性的失败可以避免永久的失败,用 permanent表示“永久的”与前文temporarily对应。
A. comprehend理解、领悟;B. fear害怕、畏惧;C. overcome克服;D. pursue追求。
A. adds补充说;B. recalls回忆;C. doubts怀疑;D. challenges挑战。 故选A。

Last Friday, our English Club held an activity called “Getting to Know Traditional Chinese Handicrafts” in the school art room.
First, we learned how to make paper-cutting. A teacher showed us how to cut a piece of red paper into a beautiful flower. It was difficult at first, but with more practice, I finally succeeded in making one. Then, we tried making a simple Chinese knot. The red cord looked like a small gift.
This activity was really meaningful. I not only learned new skills, but also understood the beauty of traditional culture. I feel proud of our culture and hope more students can love these handicrafts.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Back home, I sat before my computer, no longer thinking about a cool app.

The next Friday, I brought the finished app to Grandma’s apartment.

Back home, I sat before my computer, no longer thinking about a cool app. Grandma’s words “just like a friend” kept echoing in my mind. I began designing something simple and warm — big fonts, gentle tones and a few clear buttons. I chose a lovely child’s voice for the reminder alerts. The app could record daily plans and remind users softly. Every night I tested and adjusted the code repeatedly. When the sweet voice “Time for tea with Mrs. Green” finally rang out, I smiled. I knew this was the perfect surprise for Grandma.
The next Friday, I brought the finished app to Grandma’s apartment. Surprised yet doubtful, she set a reminder for watering flowers with my help. Minutes later, a soft alert sounded, “Grandma, your flowers may be thirsty.” Her eyes lit up. “How lovely!” she laughed. From then on, Grandma never missed appointments again. Seeing her confident smile, I realized technology’s true value — serving ordinary people with warmth.
