Three Must-Visit Hidden Spots in the Lake District
Planning a visit to the Lake District? While famous sites like Scafell Pike draw large crowds, the region is also home to quieter spots perfect for families, history lovers, and adventurers. Here are three lesser-known attractions that promise a special experience.
Aira Force
Hidden away in Ullswater, Aira Force is a classic ancient pleasure ground with a 70-foot waterfall at its heart. A series of well-maintained paths, suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, wind through woodland filled with unusual trees planted in the 19th century. The site is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Entry to the grounds is free, though parking charges apply (£6.50 for up to 4 hours). Visitors are advised to wear strong shoes, as some roads can be wet after rain.
Castlerigg Stone Circle
Set against a backdrop of sweeping mountain views, Castlerigg is one of the UK’s most impressive Neolithic monuments (新石器时代遗迹), dating back around 5,000 years. Unlike many other stone circles, it is free to enter and remains largely untouched. There is no on-site lighting, so visiting during daylight hours is necessary. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light for photography, and the site hardly feels overcrowded even in high season.
Wordsworth Museum
Situated in the charming village of Grasmere, this museum celebrates the life and works of poet William Wordsworth. The collection includes original works, personal letters, and items from the poet’s time at nearby Dove Cottage. The peaceful garden, filled with flowers mentioned in his poetry, provides a quiet spot for reflection. Admission is £8 for adults, with discounts offered for students and seniors. Voice guides are included in the ticket price.
21. What is a feature of Aira Force?
A. Fit for history lovers. B. Closed in special weather.
C. Free entry and parking. D. Accessible for the disabled.
22. What makes Castlerigg Stone Circle different from other stone circles?
A. Having a longer history. B. Offering night lighting.
C. Staying mostly original. D. Lying on a mountain top.
23. What do the three attractions have in common?
A. Perfect for reflection. B. Suitable for family visits.
C. Famous for sightseeing. D. Open around the clock.
B
Growing up, I always thought childhood games meant laughter and friendship. But one day, I was left alone in a tiny corner, while the rest of the group continued the hide-and-seek game, completely forgetting I was there. Finally, I realized I was forgotten by those so-called friends. That moment influenced much of my childhood, when I felt unseen and unimportant.
The bullying I faced wasn’t loud or obvious — it was covert. For years, two of my “friends” created a web of embarrassment, reducing my sense of self-worth. It took me a long time to realize that I had been allowing myself to stay stuck in that role. That realization became the beginning of my journey to regain my power.
The path to recovery started with creative expression. At 11, I turned to dance to express what I couldn’t say with words. On the stage, I could step out of my own pain and take up space in a freeing way. Through theater, I found a voice that had been silenced for so long.
Now, I use my voice to enable others, especially teens, to take a stand for themselves. I encourage them to find their way of self-expression through art, sports, etc. My work is based on the belief that when we turn our hurt into creative pursuits, we not only save ourselves but also become a light for others who may feel ignored.
From that dark corner to the stage of my life, I show others that we all can move from fear to freedom, from being unnoticed to standing out because we do matter.
24. What is the author’s purpose of mentioning his childhood experience?
A. To value his friendship. B. To lead into his growth story.
C. To show sweet memories. D. To present a popular game.
25. What does the underlined word “covert” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. clear. B. secret. C. mild. D. painful.
26. Why does the author encourage teens to express themselves creatively?
A. It shows their talents. B. It earns them public praise.
C. It helps them forget hurts. D. It gives them inner strength.
27. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Everyone is worth seeing. B. Self-expression changes lives.
C. Childhood matters for growth. D. Bullying is harmful to teenagers.

Although overweight people are often treated unfairly in various social situations, what many people fail to notice is that such discrimination (歧视) is far more serious than people have thought in work, leading to pay gaps between sexes.
For a long time, professionals held the view that only obese (肥胖的) women would face an income cut, while men were hardly affected. To check whether this traditional idea is true, researchers from The Economist have carefully examined the personal information of over 23,000 full-time workers aged 25 to 54. The results show that being obese hurts both women’s and men’s income.
Generally, men’s BMI has nothing to do with their income, but things change with university degrees. For both sexes, better-educated workers are, in particular, treated unfairly for their weight. The higher their education, the bigger the pay cut. Obese men with an undergraduate degree earn 5% less, while those with a graduate degree earn 14% less. Obese women are worse off, with 12% and 19% less pay.
Different jobs also bring different results. In high-skill industries like healthcare and management, overweight workers are at a clear disadvantage. However, in some physical work industries such as construction and farming, obesity has not caused lower incomes. As a result, the total yearly loss from this discrimination in America may reach $70 billion, more than twice the earlier guess.
To deal with this unfair phenomenon, several states and local governments in the United States have begun to consider related laws, and a new official rule was put into effect in New York City on November 22nd. Meanwhile, many experts have pointed out that discrimination against obese women has long existed in the United States and addressing this unfair phenomenon requires united efforts. Laws and rules could only be part of the solution.
28. What can we learn about weight discrimination in work?
A. It has been fully ignored. B. It affects both sexes equally.
C. It causes differences in pay. D. It has a greater impact on men.
29. According to the study, which group of obese workers is the least paid?
A. Men with a graduate degree. B. Men with an undergraduate degree.
C. Women with a graduate degree. D. Women with an undergraduate degree.
30. What do the experts suggest to solve the problem?
A. Better working conditions. B. Strict laws against unfairness.
C. Collective efforts from all sides. D. Positive attitude toward weight.
31. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Pay gap: an issue between sexes.
B. Pay gap: an unfair social phenomenon.
C. Weight discrimination: a threat to health.
D. Weight discrimination: a hidden cause of pay gap.
D
For animals living in the deep ocean, eyesight is useless; sound signals are the way they guide, communicate and search for food. However, this way of life is under threat from human-caused noise. A major source is shipping, which has raised underwater noise by about 3.3 decibels (分贝) every ten years, and the noise from ships is doubling every 11.5 years.
Much of the underwater noise a ship produces comes from its propeller (螺旋桨). As the blades (叶片) turn around, low-pressure areas form and create bubbles, a small ball of air or gas in water. When these bubbles break, they produce strong low-rate noise that can travel thousands of meters under water. As a result, this noise troubles sea animals that depend on such rates to communicate.
Since about 90% of traded goods are carried by sea, cutting the number of ships is not practical. Making ships more power-saving can help reduce noise, but experts believe such steps are not enough to bring back quiet oceans. Therefore, scientists are developing new technologies to make ships quieter.
One solution developed by the researchers at the University of British Columbia is to add flexible materials to blades so that the tips can fold, preventing bubbles from forming and cutting noise. Models show this design could reduce bubble-making noise by 20 decibels. Another way is to increase bubbles instead of reducing them. Dutch researchers have tested blowing bubbles onto a propeller’s blades to soften the resulting noise, which showed a 12-decibel decrease at average ship speed.
In order to confirm the effect further, researchers will next apply these methods in real-world settings. With these new technologies, we hope to make the ocean quiet again and protect all living things in the sea.
32. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By stating a fact. B. By explaining a rule.
C. By giving an example. D. By presenting a result.
33. What causes the underwater noise from ships directly?
A. The blades. B. The propeller. C. The pressure. D. The bubbles.
34. What might be a practical way to reduce underwater noise from ships?
A. Making foldable blades. B. Cutting the number of ships.
C. Slowing down the ship speed. D. Producing power-saving ships.
35. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To explore quiet ship technologies.
B. To explain the harm of underwater noise.
C. To inspire people to protect sea creatures.
D. To test different noise-weakening methods.

When my son was a child, he liked to run in our driveway until he fell. He would then turn to me to see if he was hurt. If my face showed worry or if I called out suddenly, he would cry. If I remained calm, he would brush himself off and get back to running. ____36____
We’re born to prevent our children from suffering. ____37____ This strong desire has given rise to the popular pushy parenting styles, including the “Helicopter Parent”, who flies to rescue a child in danger, and the “Snowplow Parent”, who flattens blocks in children’s way. As a result, these young kids usually believe that they are not capable of acting on their own, feeding both anxiety and dependence.
____38____ Like a lighthouse guiding sailors without controlling their course, “Lighthouse Parent” offers dependable support and clear rules, while letting kids manage their own challenges. They trust their kids to deal with difficult situations independently, knowing when to step back and how to let them find their own way.
One of the most important changes from being overprotective is to replace our desire to fix problems with the patience to listen. A fix-it mindset is focused on quick solutions. ____39____ It expresses confidence in your child’s ability to cope with challenges, however messy they might be.
Parents can clearly recall the feeling they had when they first held their child. But what we must keep in mind is that with children growing, we must move from the role of boss to that of adviser. ____40____
A. Why is he so dependent on me?
B. It is effective to reduce bad emotions.
C. It frees us up and empowers them to develop.
D. We tend to clear up troubles for them by nature.
E. Listening, by contrast, allows emotions to exist fully.
F. Such moments made me reflect on parents’ true role in raising kids.
G. Fortunately, a more measured approach to parenting appears in response.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The snowstorm was supposed to hit on the evening of Monday, January 31, 2022. As I was packing up to go home, I noticed one of my colleagues had left his laptop bag in my office. “I’m already home,” he said when I called him.
“I can bring it to you,” I assured him. It was 4:30 p.m. The snow wasn’t supposed to start until later, but just to be safe, I decided to take the country roads near his home rather than the highway, which could quickly turn into a dangerous skating rink (滑冰场).
After I dropped off the laptop bag and headed back immediately, the snow began to fall — and it came down extremely fast. Within minutes, my car windows were completely covered in snow, forcing me to pull over. Worse still, I had no idea where I was.
It was about 6 p.m. by then, and total darkness fell. I couldn’t help worrying: Would my black SUV be barely seen in the heavy snow at night? Might other drivers fail to notice me and crash into my car? I kept telling myself to stay calm, for fear would make no difference at all.
I texted my colleague, joking that my kind act had landed me in trouble. Fortunately, he came up with a good idea. “Pin your position on Google Maps and send it to me,” he suggested. I did as he told me. Minutes later, he sent back a satellite screenshot, helping me figure out I was on a road called Bouvier Lane, in between two farms. I posted my situation in my Facebook community group, begging anyone familiar with the area to come to my rescue.
Soon, comments poured in under my post. Someone messaged me, promising to connect me with a local family nearby. At 8 p.m., my phone rang. It was the son of a farmer whose land lay alongside the road where I was trapped. He told me his father Andre was on his way to pick me up!
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
About half an hour, I saw a tall figure walking toward me, carrying a flashlight.

Not long after the snowstorm, I made my way back to the farmer’s house.

【原文】 M: Have you ever played chess? Well, humans began playing chess in northern India nearly 1,500 years ago. But we only recently began competing against computers. Garry Kasparov is one of the greatest world chess champions in history. In 1996, he started to play a famous match against a computer called Deep Blue. To play chess well, you need many different skills. But computers can only calculate numbers. Kasparov made the first move. An engineer moved the chess pieces for Deep Blue. A chess master like Kasparov can think about three moves a second. But in a match held in 1997, the computer was able to process 200 million possible moves in a second. The first game took nearly four hours, ending in the computer’s loss. But the second game was different. Kasparov tried to trick Deep Blue into a mistake. But the computer didn’t respond immediately. It was quiet for 15 minutes. It seemed like the computer was thinking. It wasn’t tricked. Instead, it made a great move of its own. This time, the human lost to the machine.

【答案】24. B 25. B 26. D 27. A
【解析】

【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中的“But one day, I was left alone in a tiny corner, while the rest of the group continued the hide-and-seek game, completely forgetting I was there. Finally, I realized I was forgotten by those so-called friends. That moment influenced much of my childhood, when I felt unseen and unimportant.(但是有一天,其他人继续玩捉迷藏,把我独自留在小角落里,完全忘了我的存在。最终我意识到自己被那些所谓的朋友遗忘了。那一刻影响了我的大部分童年,让我觉得自己不被看见、无足轻重。)”,后文由此引出作者遭受隐性霸凌、自我疗愈以及帮助他人的成长故事。由此可知,作者提及童年经历是为了引出自己的成长故事。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“The bullying I faced wasn’t loud or obvious — it was covert.(我遭遇的霸凌不是喧嚣且明显的,它是covert。)”,破折号前后形成对比,not obvious意为“不明显的”,因此covert含义为“隐秘的,暗中的”,和secret同义。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“My work is based on the belief that when we turn our hurt into creative pursuits, we not only save ourselves but also become a light for others who may feel ignored.(我的工作基于这样一种信念:当我们把伤痛转化为创造性的追求时,我们不仅能拯救自己,也能为其他感到被忽视的人点亮一束光。)”可知,创造性的自我表达能够给予青少年内在力量。
【27题详解】

C
【答案】28. C 29. C 30. C 31. D

【答案】32. A 33. D 34. A 35. A

When these bubbles break, they produce strong low-rate noise that can travel thousands of meters under water.(当叶片旋转时,会形成低压区并产生气泡。这些气泡破裂时,就会产生可以在水下传播数千米的低速率噪音。)”可知,气泡破裂直接产生船舶水下噪音。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“One solution developed by the researchers at the University of British Columbia is to add flexible materials to blades so that the tips can fold, preventing bubbles from forming and cutting noise.(不列颠哥伦比亚大学的研究人员研发出一种方案:在叶片上添加柔性材料,让叶尖可以折叠,阻止气泡形成从而降低噪音。)”可知,制作可折叠叶片是可行的降噪方法。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“One solution developed by the researchers at the University of British Columbia is to add flexible materials to blades so that the tips can fold, preventing bubbles from forming and cutting noise. Models show this design could reduce bubble-making noise by 20 decibels. Another way is to increase bubbles instead of reducing them. Dutch researchers have tested blowing bubbles onto a propeller’s blades to soften the resulting noise, which showed a 12-decibel decrease at average ship speed.(不列颠哥伦比亚大学研究人员提出的一种解决方案,是在桨叶上添加柔性材料,让桨叶尖端能够弯折,从而阻止气泡产生并降低噪音。

【36题详解】
由上文“When my son was a child, he liked to run in our driveway until he fell. He would then turn to me to see if he was hurt. If my face showed worry or if I called out suddenly, he would cry. If I remained calm, he would brush himself off and get back to running.(我儿子小时候喜欢在我们的车道上跑步,直到摔倒。然后他会转向我,看看自己是否受伤了。如果我的脸上露出担忧或我突然喊出来,他就会哭。如果我保持冷静,他就会拍拍灰尘,继续跑步。)”可知,上文阐述了作者儿子摔倒后观察母亲反应的经历,本空要说明这些经历引发的思考,选项F表示“这样的时刻让我反思父母在养育孩子中的真正角色。”,能承接上文,符合题意。
【37题详解】

【39题详解】
由上文“A fix-it mindset is focused on quick solutions.(解决问题的心态专注于快速解决方案。)”以及下文“It expresses confidence in your child’s ability to cope with challenges, however messy they might be.(它表达了对孩子应对挑战能力的信心,无论这些挑战有多么混乱。)”

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
About half an hour, I saw a tall figure walking toward me, carrying a flashlight.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Not long after the snowstorm, I made my way back to the farmer’s house.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
About half an hour, I saw a tall figure walking toward me, carrying a flashlight. It was Andre, whose face was filled with sincere concern. The bright flashlight pierced the swirling snow and thick darkness, instantly calming my anxious heart. He greeted me warmly and guided me cautiously through the snow-covered path to his farmhouse. His family welcomed me with hot drinks and tasty food to drive away the bitter cold. They comforted me with soft words all the way, easing my inner tension little by little. Surrounded by their kindness, I gradually felt peaceful and secure in the terrible snowstorm.
Not long after the snowstorm, I made my way back to the farmer’s house. I brought some gifts to express my sincere gratitude for their timely help. However, they politely turned down my gifts, insisting that helping a stranger in need was simply what anyone would do. Their kindness and modesty touched me greatly. The experience gave me a new perspective that true kindness means selfless devotion with no expectation of reward. Though my kind act for a colleague trapped me in the snowstorm, I received warm help from strangers. Inspired by them, I decided to pass on kindness and always reach out to those in trouble.
