Tom always lived for grades. He was always interested in books and ideas. Why should he care about people? They only made fun of him. They were jealous (妒忌的) because he was so smart, or so he thought. It seemed that Tom knew everything — except one thing. He didn’t know how to get along with other people.
He made his parents believe that school was a waste of time, so he began home schooling with special teachers. He dreamed of being the youngest person to enter university, and he sent letters to famous professors to see if it was possible.
One day, the doorbell rang. When Tom opened the door, there was his idol — Professor Rosen. Tom was so excited that he could hardly speak. The two talked for a long time, exchanging ideas. The professor was surprised at what this young boy knew. “Tom, tell me about your friends. What do you do for fun?” the professor wanted to know.
There was silence as Tom realised that he didn’t really have any friends. “Well, I don’t have time for all that. I’m too busy with my studies,” he said.
“That’s a problem, Tom. You have to learn that the world is not just filled with ideas. It’s filled with people. And you have to remember to be what you are ... a boy. Boys need to have fun.”
The professor talked a bit more and then said, “I have to go, but I have a test for you. In this box, there are three things. I want you to learn how to use them. It is not very simple and you’ll need another person to help you. Experiment and learn how to use them, and I’ll be back in a week to see how you’re doing. Then, I’ll have another test for you.”
The professor left and Tom opened the box. Inside were two baseball gloves and a ball. He tried on a glove and picked up the ball, a glimmer of excitement in his eyes.
24. What does the underlined word “it” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Writing letters. B. Attending university early.
C. Studying at home. D. Visiting famous professors.
25. What do Professor Rosen’s words mean in Paragraph 5?
A. It’s good for Tom to share new ideas with his teachers.
B. It’s important for Tom to remember what he’s learnt.
C. It’s necessary for Tom to realise what his problem is.
D. It’s helpful for Tom to find time for fun and social interaction.
26. Why did Professor Rosen set the first test for Tom according to the text?
A. To improve Tom’s testing skills. B. To check Tom’s language level.
C. To stop Tom from being silent. D. To encourage Tom to make friends.
27. What will Tom probably do next according to the text?
A. Work much harder on his studies. B. Give the box back to the professor.
C. Go out to play baseball with someone. D. Ask for more information by letter.

Have you ever bought Genki Forest sparkling water because it’s advertised as “sugar-free”? The company recently apologized for a misleading advertisement.
The company said the drinks are “sucrose-free”(零蔗糖), but this is not the same as “sugar-free”. Now the company has changed the words “sugar-free” to “low-sugar” on the bottles.
In fact, there are many kinds of sugar. Sucrose is just one of them. Other kinds of sugar, such as fructose and sugar alcohol, are still in Genki Forest drinks. These types of sugar are used as sweeteners (甜味剂). They offer little energy, but a small amount of them can make drinks taste sweet. That’s why diet drinks like Genki Forest are popular among people who want to lose weight. They believe that they can not only enjoy sweet drinks, but also avoid taking in too much sugar. However, studies find that the sweeteners might make people eat more. When you eat sweet-tasting things, sweeteners send up your brain a “sweet signal”. Then your brain tells your body to prepare itself to take in energy. But since the diet soft drink has little energy, the brain will not receive what it is expecting. At this time, you will feel hungry and start getting energy by eating more food.
According to China Daily, drinking too many diet drinks might make you fat and lead to type 2 diabetes. It’s time for you to think twice about the diet drink trend.
28. Why did Genki Forest recently apologize?
A. For not having any sugar in its drinks.
B. For making too many advertisements.
C. For advertising its drinks incorrectly.
D. For incorrectly spelling words in its packaging.
29. What do we know about Genki Forest from Paragraph 3?
A. There are sweeteners in its drinks. B. Its drinks have high levels of sucrose.
C. Its drinks taste sweeter than other drinks. D. People can lose weight by drinking its drinks.
30. What does the underlined word “itself” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. your brain B. your body C. sweetener D. fructose
31. What do studies show about sweeteners?
A. They are used more in food than drinks.
B. They might make people feel hungry.
C. They provide enough energy for those on a diet.
D. They cause the brain to stop receiving signals.
D
Ants may be tiny—but they’re serious eaters! Try these experiments(实验) to find out what ants like to eat.
Want to find out what the ants in your neighbourhood like to eat? Place small amounts of different foods on the plate. You can use peanut butter, honey, mashed banana, grated apple or cheese, and seeds.
Put this feeding station where there are lots of ants. Wait three minutes and count the number of ants feeding on each food. Count how many there are every three minutes.
Ants don’t always take the first food they find. Instead, they may investigate, touching many pieces of food with their antennae (触须). What does this bit taste like? Exactly how big is it? Those are the kinds of things the ants are checking out. When they finally choose a food, the ants carry it back to their nest.
Do your ants prefer big seeds or smaller ones? Sweet crumbs or less sweet ones? Here’s a test: Give ants a choice between full-strength honey and a honey-water mixture (add one teaspoon of honey to five teaspoons of water). Offer a few drops of each choice side-by-side at a feeding station. Then every three minutes, count the number of ants you see near each place.
Want to see how far ants travel when they go out to collect food? First find an ant nest. You can do that by following some ants when they carry food home. Now you know how far the ants travelled to get to your food station. Next, move the food station about 30 cm farther from the nest.Do the ants find it? If so, move the station again. Keep moving the station until the ants no longer appear.
When ants find a food they like, they work quickly to collect it. Usually they try to get the nest mates to help. To find out how long does it take an ant to tell others that there’s food nearby, offer their favourite food and watch. After the first ant finds the food, begin counting the ants every minute. Also, watch their behaviour. When the first ant goes home, what does it do when it gets near one of its nestmates? Does it feed the other ant a bit of food? Or do the two touch the antennae together? Is the ant with the food pulling its back end on the ground? It may be leaving strong smell that leads to the food.
32. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To tell readers about ants' antennae.
B. T tell readers about different kinds of ants.
C. To tell readers how to find out where ants live.
D. To tell readers how to observe ants by experiments.
33. In Paragraph 4,“...they may investigate...” What does the word “investigate” mean?
A. Quickly eat something. B. Carefully hide something.
C. Quickly look at something. D. Carefully check something out.
34. How can a person find out how far ants will travel to find a food station?
A. By moving the food station farther away.
B. By changing the food in the food station.
C. By showing the food station to different ants.
D. By reducing the amount of food in the food station.
35. What does the writer want readers to learn in this passage?
A. How to tell types of ants. B. How to feed ants at home.
C. How to study the way ants behave. D. How much food ants can eat.

Setting Clear Goals for Your Study
Do you want to improve your grades? Just remember this saying: “The only way to achieve great things is to set clear goals.” Setting clear goals is a powerful way to help you study. Goals provide direction and a sense of success. 36
The Importance of Goals
Goals play a main role in keeping you motivated. 37 Without a clear purpose, you might feel lost in your daily school life. Goals help you stay on track and maintain your interest. Moreover, setting goals helps you develop important skills like self-control and time management.
Set Realistic Goals
To set good goals, you must first know your own strengths and interests. 38 For example, if you are good at English but weak in Math, your goals for them should be different. Try to use “SMART” goals — goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This gives you a clear plan instead of just a vague (模糊的) wish.
Break It Down
Sometimes, a long-term goal can look huge and scary. 39 By identifying specific steps, you can start with confidence. You can create a to-do list to decide which tasks are most important. This helps you organize your time effectively and finish your work step by step.
Monitor and Celebrate
Regularly checking your progress is key to success. You should track how well you are doing towards your goals. 40 Recognizing your effort gives you a sense of pride. This positive feeling will encourage you to keep learning and growing.
A. They act as a map for success and keep you focused.
B. If you fail to reach a goal, you should give up immediately.
C. You need to set goals that match your own ability and level.
D. Asking your teachers for help is also a good way to improve.
E. This allows you to celebrate your small achievements along the way.
F. In this article, we will look at how to make goal-setting work for you.
G. Therefore, dividing the big goal into manageable parts is completely necessary.

范文
Dear teachers,
I'm Li Hua, a student from Grade One. With our school's annual English Week around the corner, I am writing to propose two activities under the theme of "English for Fun, English for Charm".
First, an English Movie Dubbing Challenge would be a perfect choice. It provides us with a platform to practise our pronunciation by imitating native speakers in movies, thus learning language in a short delight. An English Play Competition is also a great addition. Acting out roles in English can not only enhance our language proficiency but also boost our confidence.
I believe these activities will greatly enrich our English Week, making it a great success.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

1.
W: Excuse me, could you tell me where Gate 25 is? My flight will be boarding in 20 minutes.
M: Turn right at the gift shop up ahead. Then go up the stairs there. Gate 25 is right next to the coffee shop.
2.
M: Mike, can you help me clean the house tomorrow evening?
W: Sorry, I promised to go to my uncle's. He has been ill.
M: Then how about this weekend?
W: OK. I'll be free after the meeting on Saturday.
3.
W: The weatherman said it would be 15 degrees Celsius in Dallas this weekend! It'll be 5 degrees higher than in Chicago.
M: It's not surprising at all. Chicago is over 1,000 kilometers to the north of Dallas. And the weather in Minneapolis will be 8 degrees Celsius.
4.
M: Skiing is more difficult than I expected. After two weeks of practice, I still fall down a lot.
W: It takes time to get the hang of it! I fell a lot when I started to learn it. Make sure to wear something, like a helmet and knee pads, to protect yourself!
5.
M: Oh, that's bad news! When will she be back to work?
W: She is recovering well at home now. She is expected to return to our team next week.
W: Officer, may I see your driver's license?
M: OK. What's the problem?
W: You were speeding in the city plaza. This road has a 30 miles per hour limit. You were traveling at a speed of 75 km/h.
M: What? I thought my speedometer was fine. And I didn't see any speed limit signs.
W: Our speed camera is very dependable. And you have to pay $50 in fine. If you have any questions, you can come to the traffic police station to check the record. But you'll have to pay an extra $30 then.
M: I understand. I will pay the fine now.
第7段
M: Are you going to the shop? I'd like some beef tonight.
W: You already had chicken yesterday! Haven't you forgotten what Dr. Bedwell said? You should only eat meat twice a week. Besides, we've spent too much this month.
M: It's just a small amount. A little beef doesn't make me feel full, and I can't sleep well afterward.
W: I know, but you have to be on a diet for at least a month. Many people like you have lost about 50 pounds.
M: Alright. But can you just make a cake?
W: Sorry but no. Our little son can't have sweet food. I'll prepare something special for you tonight.
第8段
W: What is the probable relationship between the speakers?
M: I'll be at the office to work from 5:00 am until 6:00 pm tomorrow. Here's a list of things you need to deal with.
W: Wow, it's pretty busy. Are you sure I can manage all of it?
M: No worries. After you send the kids from school, you need to make sure they do their homework right away. Help Kate with her math and history, and Martin with his chemistry.
W: What about Dave's football practice?
M: It starts at 6:00 pm. You need to arrive at the gym 30 minutes early. Don't be late.
第9段
W: Hi, Sam. How is your son getting on with his new school?
M: To be honest, we're struggling. Ever since his school introduced the new online learning platform, Leo has been glued to his laptop. He even has to finish his homework on it after classes. I'm worried this will put pressure on his life.
W: That is a really common concern now. Many parents feel the line between school and home has become unclear because of digital learning. But some schools are starting to set up Screen-Free Days to prevent students from overusing electronic tools.
M: That sounds nice. I hope our school can take action too. You know how, after school, I'm busy looking after her mother, and I have to prepare dinner at home. We don't have much time to keep an eye on Leo.
W: I understand. My daughter's school starts a "no screen time homework" practice every Wednesday. It has made an obvious difference to my family.
