一、完形填空(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
通读下列短文,从每小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
Let's say you go to a gym, a place where you work hard. At the end of training, you are sweating (出汗) and your muscles (肌肉) are in a lot of pain. If we compare a school to a gym, that sweat is the mark that you ___1___.
What is important is not the sweat itself, which is just salt water, but what you did to ___2___ the sweat. If you are exercising the right way, the sweat shows that you are developing strength in your body. This ___3___, which cannot be seen, is what matters most at the gym. It is measured (测量) by our sweat. In the same way, it is the knowledge and reasoning skills that you get in school that matter most. They are the real tools you will use to solve problems in the future, ___4___ the specific facts of a lesson are forgotten. Unluckily, we don't have an easy way of measuring that. That's the reason why we use examinations and grades to mark ___5___. We are developing better ways of measuring success both at the gym and at school.
Just as you can fake (伪造) sweat by standing near the heater, spraying (喷) water on yourself, or being afraid of something, you can also fake marks ___6___ working hard. Many people do so. ___7___, sooner or later, they end up in courses and jobs that they hate. At the time when the gym is cool, you might not sweat at all, but you can still be ___8___ strength. Sometimes, the most important improvements happen quietly, as you continuously challenge yourself and push your limits.
Think of the sweat as your marks. They are useless by themselves, but if you are ___9___ with yourself, they show that you are developing the knowledge and skills you need to live better in the world. School should not be about faking sweat. It should be about developing real ___10___.

The first motorcycle was made in 1872. As the speed of motorcycles increased, riders needed protection from the wind, rain, and insects. The first motorcycle helmet appeared in 1935, after T.E. Lawrence, a famous British soldier, died from a head injury while riding. Since then, helmets have changed a lot, especially in the last few decades.
Modern helmets are made of strong materials like carbon fiber and polycarbonate. They protect riders' heads during accidents. Inside the helmet, there is a soft layer that absorbs (吸收) the force of a hit. The visor, a clear shield in front of the face, protects riders' eyes from wind, dust, and bright sunlight.
Today's helmets are also getting smarter. Many modern helmets have connected speakers. With connected speakers, riders can make telephone calls as they travel along the road. Cameras are also found in modern helmets. They can record what is happening ahead like the cameras in cars and they are easy to control through voice. The visors in certain helmets are able to change their colour. They become dark when the sun shines too brightly or when strong light from cars and trucks hit riders' faces. In this way, riders can avoid strong light and see better.
These days, AI is changing people's way of life. For motorcycle riders, AI can now be placed inside helmets to achieve greater safety. One such example is the iC-R smart helmet. This helmet can show the objects around the motorcycle. The riders don't need to turn their heads or take their eyes off the road ahead to get a better sense of the road situation. The helmet can also receive all the important information, such as speed, direction and traffic accidents. When a rider decides where to go, the helmet shows different ways to get there on the inside of the visor. It can even warn the rider when necessary, like when a motorcycle gets too close to a car.

A hot-air balloon is a large balloon that can carry people into the sky. It works by heating the air inside the balloon. When the air inside becomes hotter than the air outside, the balloon rises because hot air is less dense (稠密的) than cool air.
The balloon has three main parts: the envelope (气囊), the basket, and the burner (燃烧器). The envelope is the large fabric bag that holds the hot air. The basket, which hangs below the envelope, carries the passengers and the pilot. The burner heats the air inside the envelope.
To make the balloon go up, the pilot uses the burner to heat the air. As the air inside the balloon becomes less dense, it rises. To come down, the pilot opens a vent (排气口) at the top of the envelope to let hot air out. Cool air then enters from the bottom, making the air inside more dense, and the balloon falls.
Hot air in nature
Rising hot air can be found in nature, too. The sun acts as the perfect heating system, creating rising air that can lift air and gliders (滑翔机) high into the sky.
18. What can we know about hot-air balloons according to the text?

C. Hot air is released → The air inside the balloon becomes more dense → Cool air is drawn in
D. The hot air keeps expanding
20. Why can birds fly high in the sky according to the material in the box?

"Look! Letters from Leo! Granny will be excited!" Mom said.
Andy turned toward his mother. "Leo?"
"Granny's oldest and favorite brother. He made her that special box that sits beside the window—locked up. The key's been lost forever. Now about those letters...Granny will want them."
Andy picked that special box and letters up, then took them to the kitchen. "What did you put in the box, Granny?" Andy asked.
"Nothing! I knew Leo would be joining the army soon. Just before he left, he locked my box and hid the key. He said he'd invented a word game for me and promised he'd send clues. We got letters but not one clue. Leo's final letter arrived after we heard the heartbreaking news. Mother was so sad. She tore (撕) it in half."
Granny watched Andy spread the letters on the table. She whispered, "I always thought mother threw away all of Leo's letters."
Andy pointed at one letter in two pieces. "This must be the last letter Leo sent home."
Granny picked up one half of the letter, and read, "Dearest Littlest Sister..."
"Leo did send clues. Let's tape the halves together." Andy said.
Andy read, "Ewe reed four make?"
"Nonsense words," Granny said.
Andy looked at the paper, then said, "Wait! If we read down, instead of across—in columns (列), not rows." He read the words one by one "You need to read this aloud for it to make some sense."
Granny's eyes opened wide. "Leo was using homophones (同音异形词)!"
She began to read, "Go to the room where we ate. See the flower like the sun?"
Granny smiled. "The dining room is where we ate. The painting of a sunflower..."
Andy was on his way. In a few seconds, he returned, carrying the painting. They discovered another clue printed in light pencil on the back. Andy read, "Look above the hole where rain does not come down. See the broken time piece? There! Inside!"
Andy looked up above the fireplace. There was an old clock with a broken face. He reached in and pulled out a small, dusty key.
Granny's hands shook as she put the key into the lock. The box opened slowly. Inside was a beautiful family photo—Leo, Granny, and their parents, all smiling together.
"He didn't forget me," Granny whispered, tears rolling down her cheeks.

Many people believe that true happiness comes from love and others, but real happiness starts with loving yourself.
Self-love means understanding and accepting yourself, both your strengths and weaknesses. You don't need to be perfect to be worthy of love. Everyone has things they like and don't like about themselves. But you should try to accept all parts of who you are, including the parts you want to improve.
Practicing self-love can improve your mental health. When you are kind to yourself, you feel less stressed and more confident. Simple things like getting enough sleep, eating healthy food, and spending time on hobbies you enjoy can all be forms of self-love.
Self-love also helps you build better relationships with others. When you value yourself, you are more likely to set healthy boundaries (界限) and treat others with respect. You can't pour from an empty cup—taking care of yourself first allows you to give more to those around you.
Remember, self-love is not selfish. It is the foundation (基础) of a happy and meaningful life.

My works looked ordinary and seldom get praise from others. I supposed I was not talented enough for photography. Faced with this difficult challenge, I gradually lost confidence in myself.
I hid all my photos in a box and planned to give up my hobby quietly.
But one day, the club organizer found my box. Instead of pointing out my weaknesses, she put some of my photos up on the club noticeboard.
Under each photo, she wrote short notes to show what she liked about them.
She did not give me big, loud praise. But these simple notes made me realize that efforts would finally pay off.
Her gentle encouragement lit me up. This warm and precious memory will stay deep in my heart forever.
