Passage 1
My first day in high school will never be forgotten. When I got to the classroom in the morning, I saw that Mr. Brown had already put our names on our tables. After walking a few steps, I saw my name on the table right in the middle of the classroom. As I walked up to my table, my heart sang. “It would be great to sit there. I could see everything easily,” I thought to myself.
A while later, the other students entered one by one and took their own seats. And then Mr. Brown started talking. He showed us his classroom rules and tried to explain them. All of a sudden, a student called Tony started singing loudly. All the while he moved his body to the music. His desk mate Josh couldn’t understand why he was doing these things. Then he stood up and talked to Mr. Brown, “I don’t want to sit with this strange guy. Can I swap seats with someone else in this room, please?”
Mr. Brown didn’t answer his question directly. He stopped what he was doing and turned on his computer. Then he showed us some pictures about autistic (患自闭症的) kids. He explained that autistic kids have little self-control. They seem to do things that are beyond everyone else’s understanding. However, they can do many other great things, in the field of art or music for example. Then he told us that Tony was not good at maths, but loved songs. “He can sing thousands of songs. What’s more surprising is that he can remember all the words without any mistakes.” In the end, Mr. Brown added that although autistic kids were different, they should be loved.
Since that first day in high school, I became Mr. Brown’s admirer (崇拜者). I was pretty sure Mr. Brown would get all of us on the right track.

Passage 2
As more offices realize that sitting all day long is actually pretty terrible for health and study, schools are trying to come up with creative solutions to keep students active. Ward Elementary School in Winston, North Carolina, is filling traditional classrooms with exercise balls or standing desks.
Scott Ertl, a teacher at the school, came up with the idea while he was exercising and reading at the gym. Believing it would be a fun way to make students more active, he placed one bike in the corner of his classroom and encouraged students to use it.
It was so popular that Ertl decided to add more bikes and offer the Read and Ride program to the entire school. Today Ward Elementary School has a special exercise room filled with exercise bikes that can be used by students while completing their daily reading tasks. As they ride, they read.
Besides making reading more fun, the program also helps students exercise at a comfortable pace without the stress that comes with regular sports-related activities. It is also a perfect way to work off energy during days when the weather is not suitable to outdoor activities. It also has solved the health problem of sitting down all day.
What matters most is the program’s effect on how they learn. A year after Read and Ride was introduced at Ward Elementary School, students actively participating in the program showed an amazing 83% reading ability. Those who had not taken advantage of the exercise bikes tested at a much lower, 41%.
Though the improvement in study achievement cannot all be the result of programs like Read and Ride, experts believe they are a very great and important contributor. That’s because studies have shown that physical activity stimulates (刺激) brain cells (细胞) and helps prepare it for learning. As word of the difference made by this easy-to-start exercise program spreads, don’t be surprised to find schools across the country apply “Read and Ride” for their students.
1.What pushed the Read and Ride program to start in Ward Elementary School?
A.Students’ repeated requests. B.Scott Ertl’s idea during exercise.
C.Teachers’ group discussion. D.Other schools’ successful examples.
2.How did the program develop after its first success?
A.It attracted many teachers. B.It included more sports activities.
C.It became a national program. D.It grew into a special exercise room.
3.What is one of the main benefits of “Read and Ride”?
A.It cuts school sports costs. B.It completely solves students’ health problems.
C.It increases students’ physical grades. D.It greatly improves students’ reading abilities.
4.What does the underlined word “contributor” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Helper. B.Volunteer. C.Partner. D.Saver.
Passage 3
Zach, a fourth grader, sits alone in the school cafeteria. At break, he skirts the edges (边缘) of the playground, not joining in. He doesn’t play sports, so he doesn’t mix well with the other boys in his class. His mother is concerned about that.
At most schools, this child might become lonely and even sad. But at Graham Elementary School in Naperville, Illinois, teachers moved him around to different groups for class projects until he clicked with another boy.
“Suddenly, Zach had a best friend. They would hang out together, and help each other with homework,” says Zach’s mother.
Sue Clendening, the principal of Graham Elementary, believes that friendships are just as important as schoolwork. For years she had watched children get their feelings hurt at break and they couldn’t focus on their lessons afterward. Two years ago, she decided to do something about it.
Clendening surveyed the students to learn who had friends and who didn’t. She found that 30 percent of the children in fourth grade said they were often alone on the playground because no one wanted to play with them. Some students even wrote their own names on the survey under the question, “Who most needs a friend?”
Clendening shared the survey results with her teachers. She flagged lonely kids and got teachers to put them in groups of children where they might make friends. The school also started after-school clubs like book club and chess club so that children could find like-minded people. Each week, a lunch group brings together shy children and more social children to talk with a social worker.
“I believe social skills can be taught the same way math can be taught,” says Clendening. “A growing body of research points to social skills being as important as academic (学业的) skills for future success.”
1.Why does Zach’s mother feel concerned?
A.He has trouble making friends. B.He forms the habit of playing outside.
C.He prefers to go to school alone. D.He spends too much time on homework.

A.Some students were left out and felt lonely.
B.Few children had an interest in school activities.
C.Most children were unhappy with their grades.
D.30 percent of students wanted to play in groups.
3.What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A.How the children feel about social ties. B.How the teachers share the survey results.
C.How the school draws out lonely kids. D.How the social workers help shy children.
4.What do Clendening’s words suggest?
A.She pays more attention to math lessons. B.Friendship building can hardly be taught.
C.Academic skills are the key to one’s success. D.She values social skills as part of education.
Passage 4
Whenever I think of Ms. Anita Moore, I always smile and feel fortunate to have her as my teacher. All of her students knew she loved being a teacher. Her classroom was always a safe place where we were encouraged to share, think, and express ourselves.
One of the memories that always stuck with me was a reading class when Ms. Moore read a story aloud and started to cry. The main character in the story reminded her of her grandmother. She paused to share about her relationship with her grandmother and made the connection as to how that relationship helped understand the story.
Ms. Moore tried her best to make a connection with each student in her classroom. She knew what we liked and used that information to bring our interests into the classroom. She brought various types of books to our classroom and allowed us to take them home. It was she that helped my love for reading grow.
Ms. Moore also went beyond classroom instruction. She decided that our school should have a choir and that all of her students should audition. Without her, I would never have taken part in this type of after-school activity. Once it was time for the annual 5th-grade weekend camping trip, my parents refused to let me attend. Ms. Moore came to my home to persuade them.
Ms. Moore was a wonderful example of a caring teacher. From her, I’ve learned to make connections with students and look for ways to help them learn and feel successful.
1.Why did Ms. Moore cry in the reading class?
A.The story was too sad.
B.She was moved by the students.
C.She thought of her own grandmother.
D.She helped her students understand the story.
2.What can we learn about Ms. Moore from Paragraph3?
A.She was good at writing books.
B.She inspired the writer’s love for reading.
C.She donated many books to poor students.
D.She was the favorite teacher of the whole class.
3.Which of the following words best describe Ms. Moore?
A.Responsible and caring. B.Positive and independent.
C.Inspiring and strict. D.Knowledgeable and confident.
Passage 5
Students who plan to use AI (人工智能) tools to write their college admission essays (文章) should think twice: Essays written by AI sound very similar to each other and lack personal voice, even when details (细节) like race or gender are included.
Researchers from the Cornell University compared 30,000 college application essays written by humans to ones written by eight AI tools. They discovered that AI essays were easy to tell from actual human writing because they used similar sentence patterns and repeated the same kinds of ideas.
“The admission essay is a chance for applicants to offer insights into who they are, beyond all the structured information on the application form,” said Rene Kizilcec, senior author of the new study. “AI tools can help students improve their writing and are likely a good idea for weak writers. But asking for a full article will result in something that just does not sound like any real applicant.”
The researchers explained that AI models cannot easily copy a person’s natural writing style. This makes them undependable for important writing tasks like college applications. When AI tools were asked to write from the view of a specific person, such as “an Asian woman from California”, the results sounded even less human. The essays often listed personal details in a flat and predictable way. Surprisingly, the team found that another AI program could easily tell the difference between human and AI-written essays. This means universities and colleges could likely find out essays written mainly by AI tools.
First author Jinsook Lee advises high school students to use their own ideas to brainstorm and write some simple essays, and, if allowed, use AI only to polish (润色) their essays. Applying to college can be stressful, but Lee remembers her own article-writing positively. “It was a great chance to look back on my life and my background,” she said. “I think it was the first experience for me to be really thoughtful.”
1.What is a problem about AI-written essays?
A.They are short of a personal touch. B.They are always off-topic.
C.They use many difficult words. D.They hardly describe an event in detail.
2.What does the paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the study?
A.Its use. B.Its findings. C.Its researchers. D.Its background.
3.What does Lee advise high school students to do?
A.Use AI tools to improve their writing. B.Turn to AI models for help anytime.
C.Depend on AI models to write essays. D.Avoid using AI tools for any writing.
4.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Can AI Influence Students in College Writing?
B.Should Students Use AI Tools for College Essays?
C.Do Colleges Accept AI-based Application Essays?
D.Will AI Change How College Students Write Essays?
Passage 6
David Thompson sat on a hard bench behind the long narrow desk and watched the flies fly lazily in the sun. The drone of the younger boys reading letters and the older boys reciting Latin verbs made him sleepy. David had to force his eyes to stay open. He wanted to learn something new.
He looked up at the schoolmaster’s high desk in the front of the room. The new teacher, Mr. John Adams, was from Harvard College. David’s father had been impressed with him. The boys had already had several other teachers, but none of them seemed to inspire David. So far, there was nothing to show that this one was special, though he’d only been there two days.
“It’s too hot to sit and memorize lessons,” the schoolmaster said. “We’ll move outdoors for the next part of our lesson.” He led the group of boys into the schoolyard. “You younger boys, dig for grubs and beetles (幼虫和甲虫). Count their feet. See if you can describe their shells (壳).”
David watched the teacher surrounded by laughing young students. No one had ever used the schoolyard itself for a classroom. “What next?” he thought. Soon he didn’t have time to think about the younger boys, for he was running after butterflies and dragonflies himself.
David and his friends liked this new way of learning.
“It will be a clear night tonight. Go outside and look at the sky,” said the schoolmaster. “Look at the stars and notice their brightness and the patterns they make. These patterns have names from Greek mythology (神话), names like Orion, Aries, and others. Tomorrow we will learn about the ancient stories on them.”
“How is the new schoolmaster?” asked David’s father that evening, when David announced he was going out to look at the sky.
“He’s different from any schoolmaster we’ve had,” David admitted. “He seems interested in everything around him, and he wants us to be curious too. He even used the schoolyard as a classroom.”
“So Mr. John Adams and his new ways make school useful to you after all,” joked David’s father.
“I believe he has,” said David. “I know I won’t forget the lessons he has taught us.”
1.What does the underlined word “drone” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Clear speaking voices. B.Low dull sounds.
C.Enthusiastic responses. D.High spirits.

A.“It’s too hot to sit and memorize lessons…”
B.“See if you can describe their shells…”
C.“Go outside and look at the sky…”
D.“Tomorrow we will learn about the ancient stories…”
3.From paragraph 8, we can learn that .
A.David’s father had met the new schoolmaster
B.David had thought poorly of school before
C.David’s father was not satisfied with the new ways
D.David had shown his father his homework
4.What is the main idea of this story?
A.Science is all around us.
B.School provides us with the best education.
C.There is more than one way to learn.
D.Homework is an important part of education.
Passage 7
Sure, it’s good to get along well with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant.
And yes, it’s good to get along well with your teacher because, in general, it’s smart to learn how to get along well with the different types of people you’ll meet throughout your life.
In fact, kids who get along well with their teachers not only learn more, but they’re more comfortable with asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier for them to understand new materials and makes them do their best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher, he or she can be someone to turn to with problems, such as problems with learning or school issues (问题).
Here is a question: What if you don’t get along with your teachers? In fact, teachers want to get along well with you and enjoy seeing you learn. But teachers and students sometimes have personality clashes (个性冲突), which can happen between any two people. If you show your teacher that you want to make the situation better, he or she will probably do everything possible to make that happen. By dealing with a problem like this, you learn something about how to get along with people who are different from you.
However, if a certain teacher isn’t your favorite, you can still have a successful relationship with him or her especially if you fulfill (履行) your basic responsibilities as a student. Here are some of those responsibilities (责任):
Attend class ready to learn.
Be prepared for class with the right stationery, books, and completed assignments (作业).
Listen when your teacher is talking.
Do your best, whether it’s a classroom assignment, homework, or a test.
1.According to the passage, getting along well with your teachers will make you ________.
A.have no problems with study
B.have more pleasant time in the classroom
C.get the best scores in the exams
D.get a better seat in the classroom
2.The underlined word “that” in the fourth paragraph, refers to “________”.
A.a better relationship between you and your teacher
B.getting along very well with classmates
C.the happy time you have in the classroom
D.the disappearance of personality differences
3.Which of the student responsibilities is NOT mentioned?
A.Attend class ready to learn.
B.Complete assignments.
C.Listen when your teacher is talking.
D.Talk aloud in class.
4.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The importance of friendship in schools.
B.The importance of a good relationship with your teachers.
C.Studying skills for students.
D.Useful skills to get along well with your teachers.
Passage 8
You may not know a lot of people when you start senior high school. Maybe your friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school. Even if you know other freshmen (一年级学生), you still feel anxious that you don’t know any upperclassmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?
Most senior high schools hold the freshman orientation (迎新会) before school actually starts. It is helpful because you not only learn your way around the building but also get to meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced (高深的) knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
Senior high school also has more after-school activities than junior high school, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
Junior high school taught you the basics of time management and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. Senior high school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.
1.How do the freshmen usually feel on their first day of senior high school?
A.Proud. B.Nervous C.Excited. D.Curious.
2.What are freshmen probably worried about?
A.The learning task. B.The ability to make friends.
C.The freshman orientation. D.The relationship with teachers.
3.What do after-school activities mainly help students to do?
A.Develop friendships. B.Develop their interests.
C.Build up their strength. D.Improve their learning ability.
4.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.What you’ll learn in senior high school.
B.What you learned in junior high school.
C.The difference between junior high school and senior high school.
D.The importance of being more independent and responsible.
Passage 9
What a day! That morning. I was worried that no one would talk to me. But I was wrong. I didn’t feel embarrassed or frightened at all on the first day of senior high school. I miss my friends from junior high school, but I believe I will make new friends here and that there’s a lot to explore at senior high school. I feel much more confident than I felt that morning.
My name is Adam and I’m a freshman at senior high school. Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge. The first week was a little confusing.
First, I had to think very carefully about which courses I wanted to take. The school adviser helped me choose the suitable ones from maths, English, chemistry, world history, Chinese and so on. I know that Chinese is a very difficult language, but I hope to be fluent when I graduate. My adviser recommended (推荐) that I should sign up for advanced literature because I like English and I’m good at it.
I had to choose extra-curricular activities, too. I tried to join the school football team, but the coach told me that I didn’t play well enough. Obviously, I was unhappy, but I won’t give up. I’ll find a way to improve on my own so that I can make the team next year. I joined a volunteer club instead. Every Wednesday, we work at a soup kitchen and hand out food to homeless people in the community.
I know I’ll have to study harder as a senior high school student and get used to being responsible for a lot more. I’m a bit worried about keeping up with the other students in my advanced courses, and it’ll be quite difficult to get used to all the homework. Still, I’m happy to be here. Studying hard isn’t always fun, but I’ll be well prepared for university or whatever else comes in the future.

A.He gave up playing sports forever.
B.He argued with the coach for unfair treatment.
C.He joined a volunteer club to help others.
D.He practiced alone to improve for next year.

C.Partner. D.Saver.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.D 4.A

2.What did Clendening’s survey show?
A.Some students were left out and felt lonely.
B.Few children had an interest in school activities.
C.Most children were unhappy with their grades.
D.30 percent of students wanted to play in groups.
3.What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A.How the children feel about social ties. B.How the teachers share the survey results.
C.How the school draws out lonely kids. D.How the social workers help shy children.
4.What do Clendening’s words suggest?
A.She pays more attention to math lessons. B.Friendship building can hardly be taught.

Moore?

2.Which statement shows that the new schoolmaster understood the children?
A.“It’s too hot to sit and memorize lessons…”
B.“See if you can describe their shells…”
C.“Go outside and look at the sky…”
D.“Tomorrow we will learn about the ancient stories…”
3.From paragraph 8, we can learn that .
A.David’s father had met the new schoolmaster
B.David had thought poorly of school before
C.David’s father was not satisfied with the new ways
D.David had shown his father his homework
4.What is the main idea of this story?
A.Science is all around us.
B.School provides us with the best education.
C.There is more than one way to learn.
D.Homework is an important part of education.

Passage 9
