①Do you have an old mercury (水银) thermometer (体温计) in your medicine box at home? For over 100 years, these glass thermometers have been common in families because they are cheap and accurate (准确的).They help people check if they have a fever and are like helpful friends when we are sick.
②You may wonder how a mercury thermometer works. It has a little mercury inside a thin glass tube.Mercury expands when heated and contracts when cooled. Before use,you need to shake it hard to push the mercury back down below 35℃.When you put it under your arm or in your mouth, your body heat makes the mercury rise in the tube to show your temperature.
③However,a big change is coming.Starting from January 1,2026,companies in China will stop producing these mercury thermometers.Soon, people will no longer be able to buy them in shops.
④There are several reasons for the stop of production.Mercury is highly toxic (有毒的).If the glass breaks—from shaking too hard, dropping or hitting hard surfaces—mercury comes out and turns into toxic gas (气体) quickly.Breathing it in can cause headaches and tiredness. Also, you should never touch mercury with your hands,as it can enter your body through the skin and cause health problems.
⑤What's more, using mercury thermometers usually takes about 10 minutes. They are also difficult to read because the mercury line is very thin, and it is hard for you to see it clearly. They are not as convenient as other kinds of thermometers.
⑥Now,the old"health guards"are retiring while electronic (电子的) thermometers are becoming the new heroes. They are usually made of plastic and have a screen, which are safe and easy to use. They can take your temperature without touching you.
⑦In the future,we will have even better tools. We might use smart watches or other cool gadgets(小工具) to check our health. They will be smarter, faster, and safer. So,let's get ready to say goodbye to the old glass tubes.

Since the astronauts (宇航员) stay in space for a longer and longer time, carrying all food to space becomes more and more difficult. So, “space planting” becomes very important. The Shenzhou XI astronauts succeeded in growing lettuce (生菜) in the space station, from sowing to harvest. After that, the “space farmers” have successfully grown wheat, rice. The most recent visitors to China’s space station, the Shenzhou XVII astronauts are now growing lettuce and cherry tomatoes. These “space gardens” not only provide astronauts with food but also more oxygen (氧气) and water.
Now the astronauts want to step out of the space station and find out the possibility of growing plants on the moon.
A new study by Chinese scientists has found that bacteria (细菌) in soil (土壤) from Earth could offer a solution. Researchers from China Agricultural University found out three kinds of bacteria from the Earth soil were good for plant growth.
They then grew model plants in the lunar soil with the bacteria in the space station. They found that after six days of growth, the plants had longer stems (茎) and roots than those grown without the bacteria. The plants also had heavier and wider leaves after 24 days of growth. Besides, levels of chlorophyll (叶绿素) in the model plants were much higher than those grown without bacteria.
“The study results are very important for future long-term stays on the moon,” the study’s lead researcher, Sun Zhencai said. Bacteria in the Earth soil may help astronauts make better use of lunar resources, such as creating lunar greenhouses. In their following research, they will work closely with astronauts and hope to grow crops like rice, corn and potatoes with real lunar soil samples.

On September 3, 2025, China held a big military parade in Tian’anmen Square. It was to mark the 80th anniversary (周年纪念) of winning the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. This event is of great importance to all Chinese people.
The parade had two main parts and lasted about 70 minutes. There were 45 teams in all, like air flag teams, foot teams and equipment teams. All the weapons (武器) shown were made in China, and many new kinds appeared for the first time.
This parade is very meaningful. First, it helps people remember history and respect the heroes who died for our country. Second, it shows how modern our military is and the ability to keep our country safe. Third, it tells the world China will keep the post-war (战后) order and support global peace.
During the parade, people from different fields were invited. This tells us the war victory came from the unity of the whole Chinese nation. Also, the parade shows China’s promise to build a better world for everyone.
As teenagers, we should learn from history and study hard to improve our abilities and help our country develop. We must treasure peace and take action to protect it. The Chinese military is strong, but it will never use force to hurt other countries—it only wants to protect our country and people.

look up“查阅”、deal with“处理”、stick to“坚持”均与refuse逻辑不符。
By“通过”、As“作为”、For“为了”均不符合逻辑。
此处为whether…or… When“当……
make a difference“产生影响”为固定搭配。

How time flies! My junior high school has entered its final year. Looking back, I had not only pains but also gains.
I used to be poor in public speaking and felt really nervous whenever I spoke before crowds. I was afraid of making mistakes and even avoided taking part in class activities. Luckily, my English teacher gave me lots of useful advice and encouraged me a lot. I kept practising speeches in my spare time and took every chance to show myself.
Slowly, I became braver and much more confident. Now I dare to speak in front of the whole class. From this experience, I learn that difficulties can push us to become better as long as we keep trying and never give up.
