The huge Amazon rainforest in South America has been a mystery for centuries. It has all kinds of natural wonders. Among them in Colombia, a river is especially famous as “the most beautiful river” in the world.
Locally called Caño Cristales, this special river lies in a national park. It is made up of several waterfalls, rapids (急流), and lots of pools. For most of the year, Caño Cristales looks like a common river: clean, green, and rocky. However, during the short period between September and November, the river explodes (迸发) with life and color. It appears as any mix of colors including blue, green, yellow, orange, and a purplish red. So it is also known as the “River of Five Colors”.
Although at first it may appear like some chemicals were added to the water, this colourful river is completely natural. Caño Cristales’ colors are the result of a special water plant. It needs sunlight to grow. The plants change color depending on how much sunlight they receive, and the amount (数量) is decided by the height and speed of the water. Therefore, it is possible for the plants to be completely colorless if the sunlight is too hard to get. They are weak plants. This makes them easily hurt in the water.
Actually, the river faces some problems, including drier seasons, wildlife trouble, waste problems, and budget (预算) cuts. In 2007, the park was forced to close because it was overcrowded with tourists. Now the park allows only 200 people a day and asks them to behave well.
Today, Caño Cristales still shines among Colombia’s most popular natural wonders, making lots of tourists visit it every year.
1.When might it be the best time to visit the “River of Five Colors”?
A.In January. B.In March. C.In June. D.In October.
2.Why is Caño Cristales colourful?
A.Because a special plant lives in it. B.Because people add chemicals to it.
C.Because the water is badly polluted. D.Because the weather is changeable there.
3.For what reason was the park once closed?
A.Too many visitors. B.The poor service.
C.Too much rubbish. D.The wildlife problems.
4.What can we learn about Caño Cristales from the text?
A.It looks colorful all year round. B.It has no problems at all now.
C.Its beauty is completely natural. D.It is the only wonder in the Amazon.
5.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To warn people not to visit Caño Cristales. B.To introduce a beautiful natural wonder.
C.To explain the growth of water plants. D.To ask for money to protect the river.

Without classes and exams, the summer vacation is an ideal time for Australian kids. For me, Nancy, it means much more than not going to school. It is also a golden chance to spend time with my family because I have little time with them during the school year.
Last summer vacation, I travelled with my family to the Hawkesbury River in Western Sydney. It was one of the most unforgettable summer vacations in my life.
Staying by the river helps us escape from the hot weather and noise of the city. Every day, my family and I got up early to go swimming in the cool water. In the morning, we all took part in a big game. We enjoyed water skiing, wakeboarding (尾波滑水) and other activities. These activities made our family feel closer.
In the warm afternoon, we peacefully read books on hammocks hung among trees by the river. The days always ended with a campfire. We sat around the fire, talking and laughing.

My father seemed happy as we walked home from the supermarket together. “Tommy,” he said, “there comes a time in every boy’s life when he must take on responsibilities (责任). From today, I want you to wash the dishes on Sunday morning, so your mother and I can read the newspaper.”
“Wash the dishes?”
“Anything wrong with doing the dishes, son?”
I started to say something about a man’s job or a woman’s work, but I knew quickly that my protests (抗议) would be of no use.
I didn’t taste a bit of breakfast that morning. Dad didn’t notice me at all. Suddenly, everything became quiet. My sister began to clean the table. And then my father said to my mother, “Let’s go and read the newspapers.”
So this was what my life had come to. I could learn Latin well, play baseball well... I could do anything, but I could never do those dishes.
My father came back into the kitchen later, and in his right hand was the old apron. “I want you to have this, Tommy. It’ll keep your clothes from getting wet.” Before I could say a word, he had put it on me. “Thanks, son.”
I looked down at the apron. I could see my dad going out of the kitchen. Soon I was singing I Had a Hat When I Came in. And I knew the kind of man I wanted to be.

Housework is a great disciplinary (执行纪律的) tool to use for raising children. However, not all chores are suitable for every age. The following is advice on activities to develop the children’s good habits.
Two-year-old can learn how to take out the rubbish. They can help their parents carry light things and hang up clothes. At this age children should learn how to put their toys away before going to bed.
At the age of three, children can learn how to water plants and feed pets carefully. They should learn how to make their beds and put their dishes away. Children at this age can pick up the daily newspapers and begin to learn how to wash clothes.
Four-year-old should be old enough to do what the two- and three-year-olds can do and more. They can make their beds, set the table, and clean up after dinner. They should also learn how to fold their clothes and put them in the correct cabinet (柜子), as well as how to choose their clothes for the following day.
Children aged five should help clean the table and change their bed sheets. They can also prepare their schoolbags, as well as something else related to (与……有关) the next school day. At this age they should learn to clean their toys and tidy up their rooms.
Children grow through personal experiences. The more things they do, the faster they will develop. Others help them only when it is necessary. It is important that they learn how to be independent and try to finish the tasks by themselves.

Many kids help their parents to do chores such as washing the dishes, packing up things, cleaning the floor and taking out the rubbish in the house. And some kids get money or other rewards from their parents, such as playing computer games for 20 minutes.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. One of them is Susie Walton, a parenting educator. She believes that if kids often get rewards, they will think that work isn’t worth (值得) doing unless they can get something. For example, kids won’t sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will clean the floor if their parents reward them for it. Susie said, “A home is a living place for everyone in the family. It’s very important and necessary for kids to see that it’s all the family members’ job to keep their homes clean and comfortable.”
However, other people have different opinions. They believe that money or other rewards can encourage kids to do more and more chores. It also teaches them a real world lesson that we need to work to make money. Now, there are also many apps that encourage kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and gifts that can be used either online or in the real world when they finish some housework. With the Chore Monster app, kids get points after they do chores. Kids can exchange (交换) their points for real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the mall.
What do you think of the two different opinions? Which one will you agree with? Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? Or should kids help out around their homes without getting anything?

A.By giving some facts. B.By giving some opinions.

A.礼物. B.奖项. C.奖励. D.夸奖
3.Which of the following is Susie Walton’s opinion?
A.Don’t ask kids to do housework.. B.Don’t reward kids for doing anything.

4.What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How to make money by doing chores.
B.The apps that encourage kids to do chores.
C.How to exchange the points for real rewards.
D.The good side of rewarding kids for doing chores.
5.What is the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To call on readers to do more chores.. B.To tell readers two different opinions.

The huge Amazon rainforest in South America has been a mystery for centuries. It has all kinds of natural wonders. Among them in Colombia, a river is especially famous as “the most beautiful river” in the world. Locally called Ca o Cristales, this special river lies in a national park. It is made up of several waterfalls, rapids (急流), and lots of pools. For most of the year, Ca o Cristales looks like a common river: clean, green, and rocky. Ca o Cristales’ colors are the result of a special water plant. Today, Ca o Cristales still shines among Colombia’s most popular natural wonders, making lots of tourists visit it every year. 1.When might it be the best time to visit the “River of Five Colors”? A.In January. B.In March. C.In June. D.In October. 2.Why is Ca o Cristales colourful? A.Because a special plant lives in it. B.Because people add chemicals to it. C.Because the water is badly polluted. D.Because the weather is changeable there. 3.For what reason was the park once closed? A.Too many visitors. B.The poor service. C.Too much rubbish. D.The wildlife problems. 4.What can we learn about Ca o Cristales from the text? A.It looks colorful all year round. B.It has no problems at all now. C.Its beauty is completely natural. D.It is the only wonder in the Amazon. 5.What is the purpose of the text? A.To warn people not to visit Ca o Cristales. The river is a perfect place for people to forget about all the stress of life and simply enjoy the moment. To me, it is the best place to spend time together with my family. C.Nancy will go to the river with her parents this summer. D.Nancy won’t stay in Australia any longer. On Sundays, my father always wore that gray apron (围裙) after breakfast. For the next hour, Dad did the dishes, singing songs like I Had a Hat When I Came in. I thought it was strange for a man to wear an apron. It was the last Sunday in August. My father seemed happy as we walked home from the supermarket together. “Tommy,” he said, “there comes a time in every boy’s life when he must take on responsibilities (责任). From today, I want you to wash the dishes on Sunday morning, so your mother and I can read the newspaper.” “Wash the dishes?” “Anything wrong with doing the dishes, son?” I started to say something about a man’s job or a woman’s work, but I knew quickly that my protests (抗议) would be of no use. I didn’t taste a bit of breakfast that morning. Dad didn’t notice me at all. Suddenly, everything became quiet. My sister began to clean the table. And then my father said to my mother, “Let’s go and read the newspapers.” So this was what my life had come to. I could learn Latin well, play baseball well I could do anything, but I could never do those dishes. My father came back into the kitchen later, and in his right hand was the old apron. “I want you to have this, Tommy. It’ll keep your clothes from getting wet.” Before I could say a word, he had put it on me. “Thanks, son.” I looked down at the apron. I could see my dad going out of the kitchen. It’s very important and necessary for kids to see that it’s all the family members’ job to keep their homes clean and comfortable.” However, other people have different opinions. 1.How does the writer start the passage? A.By giving some facts. B.By giving some opinions. C.By using a teacher’s words.. D.By showing his own experiences. 2.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “rewards”? A.礼物. B.奖项. C.奖励. D.夸奖 3.Which of the following is Susie Walton’s opinion? A.Don’t ask kids to do housework.. B.Don’t reward kids for doing anything. C.Don’t give kids rewards for doing chores.. D.Don’t let kids play computer games. C.To invite readers to express their opinions.. D.To show the writer’s views about doing chores.
