Celebrating Chinese New Year with Chinese friends can be great, but, because of the cultural gap (隔阂), it can be really easy to give the wrong gift for Chinese New Year. Here are five things you should not give as a Chinese New Year gift.
Wallet—Loss of fortune
In traditional Chinese culture, giving a wallet as a gift means giving away all your money and you might lose all your finances (财源) and luck. However, it is no problem to give a wallet to your family member who already shares your financial accounts and money.
Handkerchiefs—Saying goodbye forever
People generally give handkerchiefs at the end of a funeral (葬礼). Handkerchiefs are a symbol of saying goodbye forever. Giving someone a gift like this insinuates you are saying goodbye forever.
Umbrellas—Break up
Umbrellas are a bad idea to give as gifts, because the Chinese word for “umbrella” sounds like the word for “breaking up”. Giving somebody an umbrella may insinuate that you feel your relationship has fallen apart.
Sharp objects—Cut off relationship
Giving anything sharp, such as a knife or scissors, is also a bad idea, as it’s thought to cut off the relationship. A common Chinese saying “one cut and it is in two parts” means the end of a relationship between people.
Shoes—Evil (邪恶)
Shoes are a bad idea as a present for Chinese New Year because the Chinese word for “shoes” sounds exactly like a word for bad luck or “evil”. On top of that, shoes are something that you step on, and they are considered as derogatory (贬义的) gifts.
16. Why can’t you give a wallet as a gift during the Spring Festival in China?
A. Because it is too expensive to buy a wallet.
B. Because it is a symbol of saying goodbye forever.
C. Because your family members won’t let you do that.
D. Because it means that you may give away all your money and luck.
17. The meaning of the underlined word “insinuates” is close to “________”.
A. finds B. warns C. suggests D. decides
18. Giving an umbrella as a Chinese New Year gift is impolite because it means ________.
A. you will break up with him/her B. you are saying goodbye forever to him/her
C. you will develop a relationship with him/her D. you don’t want to share something with him/her
19. Why can’t shoes be given as a Chinese New Year gift according to the passage?
①Because shoes are hard to match with a person’s feet.
②Because shoes are often seen as derogatory gifts in Chinese culture.
③Because “giving shoes” stands for giving bad luck in Chinese culture.
④Because the sound of “shoes” in Chinese is similar to the sound of “evil”.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②③④
20. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Rome was not built in a day.
B. No man is wise at all times. (聪明一世,糊涂一时)
C. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. (入乡随俗)
D. Respect yourself, or no one else will respect you.
【答案】16. D 17. C 18. A 19. B 20. C

【17题详解】
Handkerchiefs部分“Giving someone a gift like this insinuates you are saying goodbye forever”和Umbrellas部分“Giving somebody an umbrella may insinuate that you feel your relationship has fallen apart.”,insinuates后均解释物品暗含的意味,可推知该词表示暗示某种含义,与suggests意思相近。

【19题详解】
Shoes部分“the Chinese word for ‘shoes’ sounds exactly like a word for bad luck or ‘evil’”以及“considered as derogatory gifts”可推知②③④符合文章内容。
【20题详解】

Artificial intelligence AI (人工智能) is good for humans in many ways. It will make everyday tasks easier and bring efficiency (效率) to many industries (行业). It might be one of man’s greatest inventions.
And yet, like any other technology, AI will also bring risks. In February 2018, a group of AI experts (专家) got together to discuss the possible disadvantages (缺点) of AI. What they found was that “Every AI developed by the good persons is also helpful for the bad ones, too.” according to Quartz.
Their biggest worry was that the bad people could use AI for bad things. One of the areas they looked at was the use of AI to create websites that could be used to steal people’s personal information. Another possibility is that AI programs could be used to hack software (软件) and break into computer secure systems (安全系统).
There are some other worries as well. It is possible that AI could be used to create fake (伪造的) images and videos. Baidu, in fact, has developed a program called Deep Voice that can “clone” (克隆) anyone’s voice by studying a 3-7-second audio sample (音频样本).
Many leading people have expressed worries about AI. People like Bill Gates and Elon Musk have called for the industry to be more strictly controlled, as there are few laws right now on the use of AI.
However, this is set to change. In March 2018, the European Union plans to set up a group that will discuss the moral and ethical (伦理道德的) dangers of AI, and it will help to keep it safe for humans.

A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②③④

Have you ever experienced buddy reading (伴读)? It allows you and a friend to read and share the same book together. It may take the buddies time to do many reading activities, but it’s a wonderful experience. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading, but also helps you have a better understanding of the books.
It is all right to have students take part in buddy reading with same-aged schoolmates, but schools usually pair up (配对) older students with younger ones. Yucai School started such a program in 2023 and has achieved great success.
Thanks to the two-year program, many students from younger to older readers have learned a lot. For example, they learned to be kind and patient when they listened to each other. This experience also makes students get a chance to practice lifelong skills such as communicating with others. A student called Davis said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more and more confident, as he knew he was a role model for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt closer as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.
Reading is like a wonderful journey. Buddy reading makes this journey even more fantastic. Now winter vacation is coming. It’s a great time to get into books. Why not find a friend, choose a book you both like and read it together?
