On a sunny morning in a small courtyard at Walt Whitman Middle School, a 14-year-old with a purple buzz cut held a plump chicken gently in her arms.
“Her name is Betsy,” Maicy Nealy, an eighth-grader, said. Nealy used to be afraid of chickens as a young child. Now she spends hours after school collecting their eggs and cleaning the coop (鸡舍) for the school’s five hens. And though she says she is never an outdoorsy type, she feeds them their worm meals as well. For her, the chickens provide structure after school and make her very interested in agriculture. Now she can’t imagine adulthood without chickens involved. She says when she grows up, she plans to be “a lawyer that owns chickens”.
The chicken program at Whitman started about a year ago, when after-school program specialist Lee Maguire planned a month-long embryo (胚胎) development program for kids to learn about biology. Throughout the school year, they’ve observed students gaining not only companionship from the animals but some life skills. The students replenish the feed supply — which costs about $25 for 50 pounds — with money from selling some of the eggs the chickens produce at $5 to $10 a dozen, making the project self-sustaining. “Egg prices soared, making it a great deal,” said Maguire, “and it teaches sustainability.”
The chickens’ calming presence on campus is an advantage of the program that the school’s social workers and counselors (辅导员) quickly picked up on as well. They sometimes accompany struggling students outside to the coop to help them calm down or sort through their feelings. “It’s a moment that they don’t have to think about housing insecurity, food insecurity, whether their parents are going to get deployed, or how they’re going to have to improve their grades because they’re struggling,” he said. “The chickens don’t judge. They just love them. It’s a peaceful escape.”
As school ends, students head home to prepare for high school, while the chickens stay with Maguire for the summer. But first, he has a surprise he’s going to let the kids in on soon.
“I bought more baby chicks,” he said. “I got them eight more and I’m looking forward to boosting my students’ learning interest further.”
24.What can be learned from the story of Maicy Nealy?
A.Her career choices through animal care.
B.Her professional farming skill development.
C.Her transformation from fear to lifelong passion.
D.Her strong companionship with outdoor animals.
25.Why did Maguire introduce the chicken program at first?
A.To improve students’ teamwork skills in class.
B.To help students deal with employment problems.
C.To create a sustainable food source for the school.
D.To provide hands-on science learning experiences.
26.What impressed the school counselors about the program?
A.Its potential to generate school income. B.Its healing value for troubled students.
C.Its improvement in academic performance. D.Its popularity among small animal lovers.
27.What does the arrival of the new chicks symbolize?
A.The program’s financial success. B.The necessity of animal care.
C.The advanced feeding techniques. D.The new round of learning experience.

Now she can’t imagine adulthood without chickens involved. She says when she grows up, she plans to be “a lawyer that owns chickens”.(Nealy小时候很怕鸡。
根据第三段中“The chicken program at Whitman started about a year ago, when after-school program specialist Lee Maguire planned a month-long embryo (胚胎) development program for kids to learn about biology.(惠特曼的养鸡项目大约始于一年前,当时课后项目专家Lee Maguire计划了一个为期一个月的胚胎发育项目,让孩子们学习生物学。)”可知,Maguire最初引入养鸡项目是为了提供实践性的科学学习体验。故选D。

It is no surprise that the English language contains such a wide variety of expressions and phrases including dogs, which have been constant partners with people for thousands of years. The observations of dog behaviors have inspired us to take their individual characteristics into our language.
Did your roommates make a terrible mess of the dorm room while you were gone? You could describe this terrible state as “a dog’s breakfast”. This British phrase means a disorganized state of things or a bad mix of different things. It appeared during a time when people would feed their dogs leftovers from last night’s dinner or other food items they happened to have on hand for breakfast. The phrase creates such a powerful scene showing a complete mess if you truly picture it. Interestingly, the phrase “dressed like a dog’s dinner” is quite different — “someone who is overdressed or improperly dressed”.
You would be “barking up the wrong tree” if you are following a mistaken or misguided thought or action. This term dates back to the hunt of raccoon (浣熊) with the help of dogs. From time to time, a raccoon fools the dogs, which crowd around a tree, barking loudly, not realizing the quarry has taken a different way.
Many people even describe the weather by using the image of dogs. The “dog days”, dating back to ancient Rome, refers to the hottest days of the year in which we feel lazy or unable to make great efforts. It was the Romans who first noticed that the burning heat of the summer seemed to come with the appearance of Sirius, the so-called “dog star”, which was a part of the Canis Major (“big dog”) constellation (星座). But even the coldest nights have interesting idioms (习惯用语) and history with them. One Australian idiom describes the practice of sleeping alongside a dog for warmth during cold evenings — a very cold night might need more than one dog, so it is a “three-dog night”.
While dog-related idioms are common in use in many people’s everyday language today, the stories and history behind the idioms may lead us onto a new exciting journey of exploration.
28.Why are there a large number of dog-related idioms in English?
A.People summarized the ways dogs cooperate with humans.
B.People’s constant observation of dogs inspired the idioms.
C.Dogs are animals with special features favored by humans.
D.Dogs’ characteristics are the main source of English idioms.
29.Which of the following may be described as “a dog’s breakfast”?
A.A delicious meal. B.A messy kitchen.
C.An unsatisfactory ending. D.An improperly-dressed person.
30.What does the underlined word “quarry” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The raccoon. B.The tree. C.The hunter. D.The master.
31.What was the origin of the idiom “dog days”?
A.Dogs liked to hang out in summer.
B.The heat in summer got dogs barking.
C.Dogs were Romans’ favourite animal partners.
D.A star with “dog” in its name appeared at this time.
【答案】28.B 29.B 30.A 31.D

【详解】28.细节理解题。根据第一段“The observations of dog behaviors have inspired us to take their individual characteristics into our language. (对狗行为的观察启发我们将它们的个性特征融入我们的语言中。)”可知,人们对狗的不断观察启发了这些与狗相关的习语。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段“Did your roommates make a terrible mess of the dorm room while you were gone? You could describe this terrible state as “a dog’s breakfast”. This British phrase means a disorganized state of things or a bad mix of different things. (你不在的时候,你的室友把宿舍弄得一团糟吗?你可以把这种糟糕的状态描述为“狗的早餐”。这个英国短语意思是事情杂乱无章,或者不同事物的糟糕混合。)”可知,“a dog’s breakfast”指的是杂乱无章的状态,选项B“一个杂乱的厨房”符合这一描述。故选B项。
30.词句猜测题。根据第三段“You would be “barking up the wrong tree” if you are following a mistaken or misguided thought or action. This term dates back to the hunt of raccoon (浣熊) with the help of dogs. People from East Asia tend to process facial expressions differently from those from Europe, according to a new report published online in Current Biology. Rachael Jack, a University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均匀地) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western people and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or unemotional. They compared how participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes. “The cultural difference in eye movements is probably a reflection of different cultural styles in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural backgrounds have influenced these basic social skills will deepen our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
32.How do Westerners read facial expressions?
A.They seldom look at the face.
B.They only care about the eyes.
C.They look at nothing but the mouth.
D.They pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth.
33.What is the finding of the study?
A.Easterners depend more on the mouth.
B.Facial expressions are the same worldwide.
C.Easterners and Westerners read faces differently.
D.Westerners use only their eyes to show feelings.
34.Which one causes the different eye movements according to Jack?
A.Physical health. B.Cultural differences.
C.Age differences. D.Language differences.
35.What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To explain why facial expressions differ.
B.To call on people to protect different cultures.
C.To advise people to learn more about body language.
D.To stress the importance of cultural influence on emotion.
【答案】32.D 33.C 34.B 35.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍东西方人观察面部表情的方式存在差异,这种差异源于文化不同,且对跨文化情感交流有重要影响。
【详解】32.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth. (西方人会同等关注眼睛和嘴巴,而东方人更关注眼睛,忽略嘴巴。)”可知,西方人观察面部表情时,对眼睛和嘴巴给予同等关注。故选D项。
33.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“People from East Asia tend to process facial expressions differently from those from Europe, according to a new report published online in Current Biology.(根据发表在《当代生物学》在线版上的一篇新报告,东亚人解读面部表情的方式往往与欧洲人不同。)”以及第二段中的““We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. (杰克说:“我们发现,东方人和西方人会观察不同的面部特征来解读表情。”)”可知,研究发现东西方人解读面部表情的方式不同。故选C项。
34.细节理解题。根据第五段中的““The cultural difference in eye movements is probably a reflection of different cultural styles in facial expressions,” Jack said. (杰克说:“眼球运动方面的文化差异,可能反映了面部表情上不同的文化风格。”)”可知,杰克认为是文化差异导致了眼动方式的不同。故选B项。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural backgrounds have influenced these basic social skills will deepen our understanding of human emotion.(简而言之,数据表明面部表情并非人类情感的通用信号。今后,研究文化背景如何影响这些基本社交技能,将加深我们对人类情感的理解。)”可知,最后一段意在强调文化背景对情感表达与理解的重要性。故选D项。

How to Improve Your English Reading Skills
Reading is an important skill in English learning. Good reading skills can help you understand English articles better and learn more new words. Here are some tips to improve your English reading skills.
36 Before you start reading, look at the title, the pictures and the first sentence of each paragraph. This can help you know the main idea of the article quickly.
37 Don’t read the article word by word. Try to read the whole sentence or the whole paragraph. This can help you read faster and understand the article better. If you meet a new word, don’t stop to look it up in the dictionary at once. You can guess its meaning from the context.
38 It’s important to choose the right books to read. If you are a beginner, you can read simple storybooks or English newspapers for students. As your reading skills improve, you can read more difficult books, like novels and biographies.
39 Practice makes perfect. You should read English every day. Even a short passage is enough. You can read for 15 to 20 minutes every morning or evening.
40 After reading an article, you can write a short summary of it. This can help you remember what you read and improve your writing skills at the same time. You can also talk about the article with your classmates or teachers.

At the age of 10, I was once asked to deliver a speech 56 (title) “A Real Test in My Life” before the whole class! Just imagine how 57 (terrible) shy I was the moment I thought of that with so many eyes fixed upon me. I had only one 58 (choose), though. First, I was to draft the speech and that was just a piece of cake for me, because I was 59 good writer. But the hard part lay in my oral presentation. To read from the paper was not allowed. I had to recite in front of such a big audience!
A real trial began when I stood on the platform with my legs 60 (shake) and my mind blank. I didn’t know how much time 61 (pass) by. My listeners were still waiting patiently and 62 interrupting me. Gradually I found myself back, giving out my speech with 63 (difficult). Finally I finished. After it seemed to be a hundred years, I found my audience applauding. I made 64 ! From then on, my fear of talking before an audience disappeared. Actually I now turn out to be a great speaker. Looking back, I know the greatest difficulty on our way to success is our inner fear. Overcome it, 65 we will be able to achieve our goals.
【答案】
56.titled 57.terribly 58.choice 59.a 60.shaking 61.had passed 62.without 63.difficulty 64.it 65.and
故填a。
故填without。
63.考查名词。句意:渐渐地,我恢复了状态,艰难地完成演讲。此处作介词with的宾语,用difficult的名词形式difficulty意为“困难”,with difficulty意为“艰难地”。故填difficulty。
64.考查代词。句意:我做到了!此处为固定搭配make it,意为“成功做到”,所以用代词it。故填it。
65.考查连词。句意:克服它,我们就能实现目标。此处为固定句型“祈使句+and+陈述句”,表顺承关系,所以用连词and。故填and。

Secondly, we can separate waste paper, plastic, and metal for proper recycling. Thirdly, choose eco-friendly transportation means such as walking, cycling, or taking buses. Fourthly, we should use reusable bottles, bags, and containers instead of single-use plastic ones. Last but not least, let’s plant more trees and recycle waste things appropriately.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Jenny had a talent for music. She joined the campus choir (合唱团) soon after entering high school and enjoyed the after-school activity greatly. Two months later, the choir teacher Miss Music announced there would be a year-end choir concert, the school year’s highlight.
To her surprise, Miss Music gave her a challenging solo (独唱). “I’ve never done that. I’m afraid I can’t...” Jenny hesitated. “You have a beautiful voice. Practice hard and you can make it,” she encouraged her. Jenny agreed, sparing no effort to practice under her guidance.
During her practice, Jenny often saw Eli, a senior who sang an inspiring song at the freshman opening ceremony that impressed all the attendees, including Jenny. He’d led the choir to city awards and now helped guide new members. He gave her breath control tips patiently, stabilizing her singing. Jenny was grateful for that.
The big day came. Jenny spotted Eli in the hall backstage, helping with the routines. Then she noticed a single microphone standing at the front of the stage, lit by a bright spotlight, ready for her solo. She had never sung into a microphone and she forgot to ask Miss Music for advice. “The microphone might not be much of a problem,” she thought.
It was her turn to sing. Miss Music motioned for her to go up in front of that microphone. Despite her uncertainty, her solo began smoothly. She felt relieved, singing confidently. Then she got to the last high note. With her lips nearly touching the microphone, the note came bursting out of the loud speakers (音箱), deafeningly loud. Every single person jerked (急拉) backward, jaws dropping.
Shame swept over Jenny. “Never will I sing in front of people again,” she thought, rushing out, determined to skip the choir’s upcoming performance. She walked down the hallway, tears of sadness welling up in her eyes.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, she heard Eli calling out, “Jenny, wait!”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Jenny ran back to the backstage.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
Suddenly, she heard Eli calling out, “Jenny, wait!” Turning back, Jenny met Eli’s warm and understanding eyes. He handed her tissues. “My first solo was even worse — I messed up the rhythm and made a fool of myself. But courage means moving forward despite errors,” he continued. “The new microphone is sensitive; your voice is clear and emotional. Don’t let one mistake erase your talent and destroy your hard work.” His inspiring words brought back her memories of late-night rehearsals. She nodded with gratitude and said firmly, “Thanks. I’ll never give up.”
Jenny ran back to the backstage. Miss Music hurried over and hugged her, saying, “I’m proud you did quite well. The high note was just a microphone issue. My fault. I forgot to tell you how to use it.” She quickly showed Jenny the proper distance between the mouth and the microphone. Jenny responded, “Believe me, Miss Music. I’ll do better next time.” When it was the whole choir’s turn to perform, Jenny joined in. Her clear voice mixed with others’ perfectly. The hall erupted in loud applause. Jenny smiled at Eli and Miss Music, realizing setbacks are not walls but stepping stones, and that what matters most is daring to try again.
①转身:turn back/turn around
②递纸巾:hand her tissues/pass her tissues/give her tissues
③拥抱:hug/embrace
情绪类
①感激地:with gratitude/gratefully
②自豪:be proud/feel proud/take pride in
【点睛】【高分句型1】I forgot to tell you how to use it. (运用了特殊疑问词加不定式how to use)
【高分句型2】When it was the whole choir’s turn to perform, Jenny joined in. (运用了When引导的时间状语从句)
