Many inventors have left their marks on history in their own ways. Although there are inventors who you might not know, that doesn’t mean their contributions to science are less significant. Keep reading to learn about some famous inventors.
John Deere
John Deere is best known for being an inventor in the agricultural space. When the blacksmith noticed he was often making the same repairs to wood and cast-iron plows used by farmers, he began experimenting with more durable plow designs, which he then sold to local farmers. His steel plows exploded in popularity among many farmers, with Deere’s company (also called John Deere) producing 1,600 plows in 1850. That same year, the company started producing other tools in addition to plows.
Charles Babbage
If you’re reading this on a computer, you have mathematician and inventor Charles Babbage to thank. Although he didn’t invent the computer as we know it today, his ideas laid the groundwork for modern computers. Because of this, he’s often referred to as “the father of computing”.

In December 2025, Australia will make history as the first country to ban children under 16 from using social media platforms (平台) like Meta, X, and TikTok. This groundbreaking policy has led to heated global discussion, making Australia a test case for solving one of today’s trickiest youth problems.
The Australian government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, says the ban is a necessary response to a growing public health problem. Many studies link too much social media use among young people to higher rates of depression, self-harm, and addiction. Beyond that, the platforms’ design causes other risks like self-worth damaging. Albanese said, “Social media are doing social harm to our kids. We’ve reduced time on it. We want our kids to have a childhood.”
However, experts raise serious concerns. Teens who are skilled in technology might use VPNs to avoid the ban, pushing them to less safe parts of the internet. Overly strict selection could also prevent them from using valuable learning resources and social connections, especially for marginalized (被边缘化的) youth or kids from other regions seeking real community. Social media companies like Meta and TikTok have blamed the policy, noting they already offer age-suitable safety features.
Globally, other Western nations have taken different approaches. The EU uses rules to force tech companies to be more serious, while U.S. efforts aren’t worth mentioning—federal (联邦的) action is prevented by free speech debates, and states have different bans.
As a medium-sized market, Australia’s policy results will offer important lessons for other countries. If the ban improves teens’ mental health without creating unlawful digital markets or separating weak groups, it could become a global model. If it fails, it will serve as a warning about the limits of government control in the borderless digital world. All eyes are on Australia to see how this brave experiment carries on.
4. Why did Australia introduce the social media ban for under-16s?
A. To respond to the overuse of social media.
B. To promote local social media platforms.
C. To offer teens more online learning resources.
D. To limit tech companies’ influence on Australia.
5. What is the experts’ attitude towards Australia’s ban?
A. Positive. B. Unclear.
C. Worried. D. Disappointed.
6. What may make Australia’s ban successful?
A. Young people give up using the internet.
B. Other countries copy the policy immediately.
C. Tech companies stop updating social media platforms.
D. Australia improves teens’ mental health without side effects.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Tell Differences of Social Media Rules
B. Australia’s Under-16 Social Media Ban

In your morning rush to get ready, you brush your teeth, head to the kitchen, and drink a big glass of orange juice—yuck! What makes your clean mouth taste bitter when it meets orange juice?
Thanks to evolution, your brain is designed to make you love the sweetness of sugars that your body needs for energy and hate the bitterness of many poisonous things in nature that could kill you. Your awareness of these two particular tastes is significant for your survival.
In your body, every cell is held together by a membrane (膜), which is mostly made up of fats. For the cells in your mouth that are responsible for taste, their membranes have something extra called G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR, G 蛋白偶联受体). Some of these GPCRs are designed to react to sweet tastes while others are sensitive to bitter tastes, acting as an alarm system.
Toothpaste typically contains sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS, 十二烷基硫酸钠). It is a type of detergent (洗涤剂) that helps remove the film of germs on your teeth, so your breath does not smell bad. Similar to how detergent breaks up fat in oily water, SLS can break down the fats in the membranes of your taste cells. As a result, your sense of taste changes for a while.
But why does orange juice specifically become bitter instead of developing a different taste? The answer lies in the citric acid (柠檬酸) in the juice. In our study, seven volunteers tasted sugar, citric acid, salt and a bitter medicine. Both before and after the tasting, they held a solution of SLS in their mouths for one minute. The result showed that the tastes of sugar, salt and the medicine were reduced, but for citric acid, a bitter taste was added.
12. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By explaining a biological rule. B. By presenting a research result.
C. By suggesting a healthy breakfast habit. D. By describing a common daily experience.
13. What is the main function of GPCRs in taste cell membranes?
A. To produce taste cell membranes. B. To react specifically to sweet and bitter tastes.
C. To help remove germs from teeth. D. To improve the taste of foods and drinks.
14. How does sodium lauryl sulfate in toothpaste affect taste cells?
A. It makes them more active. B. It forms a protective layer on them.
C. It acts on the fats in their membranes. D. It makes them more sensitive to sourness.
15. What did the experiment in the last paragraph find about SLS?
A. Its effects on taste last for several hours. B. It causes citric acid to taste bitter
C. It enhances the taste of salt D. It makes medicine taste sweeter.
D 13. B 14. C 15. B

Did you know that your stylish jacket or favorite jeans might once have been plastic bottles? This is the world of rPET, also known as recycled polyester (再生聚酯纤维). 16 As a result, a used water bottle can take on a new life as activewear or even high-fashion pieces.
17 First, plastic bottles are collected, sorted, and cleaned. After cleaning, they are cut, melted into liquid, and stretched into thin fibers. These fibers are then spun into yarn (纱线), which can be woven into different kinds of fabric. Finally, the fabric goes through finishing processes such as printing or coating to achieve the desired color, pattern, and performance.
Some people assume that clothing made from “waste” must be cheap or low-quality. It is true that plastic-based fabrics can be less breathable and may feel rough for people with sensitive skin. 18 According to a Textile (纺织品) Exchange report, the use of rPET grew by 20% between 2020 and 2021, and made up about 14% of all global polyester production in 2022. This growth comes from rising awareness of both its practical advantages and its environmental value.
In terms of performance, rPET is strong, durable, and quick-drying — qualities that make it ideal for sportswear. 19 Beyond performance, rPET supports the environment. Producing it uses 99% less water than producing traditional polyester, an important benefit for water-stressed regions involved in textile manufacturing. It also helps reduce waste. About 25 rPET bottles can be turned into the fibers for one jacket. 20
rPET is not a perfect solution to plastic pollution, but it is a meaningful step toward more sustainable fashion and a cleaner planet.
A.It is also lightweight and wrinkle-resistant.
B.However, market trends tell a different story.
C.The transformation happens through several steps.
D.This keeps millions of plastic bottles out of landfills each year.
E.Recycling rPET fabric back into new fabric can be challenging.
F.While it is safe to wear, it releases microplastics when it is washed.
G.Unlike traditional polyester made from petrol, rPET uses existing plastic.
【答案】16.G 17.C 18.B 19.A 0.D

This is the world of rPET, also known as recycled polyester 以及下文“As a result, a used water bottle can take on a new life as activewear or even high - fashion pieces.(因此,一个用过的水瓶可以以运动服甚至高级时装的形式获得新生。)”
17.根据下文“First, plastic bottles are collected, sorted, and cleaned. After cleaning, they are cut, melted into liquid, and stretched into thin fibers. These fibers are then spun into yarn (纱线), which can be woven into different kinds of fabric. Finally, the fabric goes through finishing processes such as printing or coating to achieve the desired color, pattern, and performance.(首先,收集、分类和清洁塑料瓶。清洁后,将它们切割、熔化成液体,并拉伸成细纤维。然后,这些纤维被纺成纱线,可以编织成不同种类的织物。最后,织物经过印刷或涂层等整理工序,以达到所需的颜色、图案和性能。)”可知,此段主要介绍了塑料瓶变成rPET面料的过程,即通过几个步骤实现转变。C选项“The transformation happens through several steps.(这种转变通过几个步骤发生。)”
18.根据上文“Some people assume that clothing made from “waste” must be cheap or low-quality. It is true that plastic-based fabrics can be less breathable and may feel rough for people with sensitive skin.(有些人认为用“废物”制成的衣服一定很便宜或质量低劣。的确,基于塑料的面料透气性可能较差,对敏感皮肤的人来说可能会感觉粗糙。)”以及下文“According to a Textile (纺织品) Exchange report, the use of rPET grew by 20% between 2020 and 2021, and made up about 14% of all global polyester production in 2022.(根据纺织品交易所的一份报告,2020年至2021年间,rPET的使用量增长了20%,2022年占全球聚酯纤维总产量的约14%。)” B选项“However, market trends tell a different story.(然而,市场趋势却讲述了另一个故事。)”
19.根据上文“In terms of performance, rPET is strong, durable, and quick-drying — qualities that make it ideal for sportswear.(在性能方面,rPET坚固、耐用且速干,这些特性使其成为运动服装的理想选择。)” A选项“It is also lightweight and wrinkle - resistant.(它还重量轻且抗皱。)”
20.根据上文“Beyond performance, rPET supports the environment. Producing it uses 99% less water than producing traditional polyester, an important benefit for water-stressed regions involved in textile manufacturing. It also helps reduce waste. About 25 rPET bottles can be turned into the fibers for one jacket.(除了性能之外,rPET还有利于环境。与传统聚酯纤维的生产相比,它的生产用水量减少了99%,这对参与纺织制造的水资源紧张地区来说是一个重要好处。它还有助于减少浪费。大约25个rPET瓶子可以制成一件夹克的纤维。)”可知,此段在介绍rPET的环保价值,空格处需说明该做法的环保成效。D选项“This keeps millions of plastic bottles out of landfills each year.(这每年使数百万个塑料瓶远离垃圾填埋场。)”

William, a British student interested in Chinese culture, visited Qufu, the hometown of Confucius. He met Xiao Kong on his way to the Temple of Confucius, who was going there 1 (meet) her study group. The two teenagers soon started a warm conversation about the local history and traditions.
Xiao Kong introduced that the temple 2 (build) in 478 BC to honor Confucius, a great educator and thinker. Confucius is also recognized as 3 great philosopher whose ideas have been 4 (wide) spread across the world. His teachings 5 (shape) Chinese culture for centuries and are still influencing people’s lives now.
As they walked through the courtyard 6 (surround) by ancient cypresses, Xiao Kong explained Confucius’ ideas about “benevolence” and “propriety”. She mentioned that Confucius believed every individual should treat others with respect. 7 is interesting to note that Confucius has millions

William nodded and said he now understands why Qufu is such a special place—it’s not just about historic sites, but about the living traditions 10 connect people to the past.
1. to meet 2. was built 3. a 4. widely 5. have shaped 6. surrounded 7. It 8. descendants 9. saying 10. that/which
此处为“it is+adj.+to do sth.”

Deep in the forest, my husband and I had fun climbing over and crawling under the downed trees that blocked the dirt path before us. It was May, yet we walked up a snow-covered hill. When we noticed our jeans were wet up to our knees, it did not dampen our spirits Not once did we say, “Let’s turn around.” This was our vacation, and we were on an adventure. Little did we know this was the beginning of many more surprises.
The trail was marked as an easy one-kilometer like yet we were already walking a long distance. Our light-heartedness stopped when we came out into a clearing and saw a parking lot without our rental car in it. As my eyes scanned the surroundings, nothing looked familiar. My heart raced. I realized we were lost in a national park that did not officially open for another week.
Usually, I am the calm one in the relationship, but my husband surprised me with his calmness. This did not comfort me; in fact, it heightened my fear. As we walked, I asked my husband to call for help, but there was no cell-phone signal in this isolated(偏僻的)area.
It was awfully quiet except for our footsteps hitting the road, and my heavy breathing. My husband suggested we conserve energy and walk slower. With each step on the road, my feet and thighs hurt while my mind raced with thoughts about people who got lost in the Canadian woods for days.
My vision sharpened. I noticed everything around me: the trees, rocks and snow. I thought we could eat the snow on the ground in case we needed water. For the first time in my life, I was ready and willing to get a ride, but we did not meet with a single car on the road. Silently, I prayed multiple times. We focused on each other, made joint decisions and connected through gratitude. We managed to stay on the main road and walked straight on.
Paragraph 1:
My husband suddenly spotted a small building on a hill in the distance.

Paragraph 2:
Just then, a friendly woman appeared, saying, “Hello.”
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version
Paragraph 1
My husband suddenly spotted a small building on a hill in the distance. In no time we found ourselves heading for it. We were filled with hope and excitement to find such a building in the middle of nowhere. We climbed up the hill at a swinging pace as if all the pains were gone. As we approached, a sign came into sight, which read: Administration Office. However, it was not open for business. The empty hall made us nervous all at once. We stood there hopelessly, wondering what to do next.
Paragraph 2:
Just then, a friendly woman appeared, saying, “Hello.” I could barely hold back my enthusiasm and blurted out, “Were lost!” She comforted us and opened a room for us to take a break. Seeing we were cold and hungry, she treated us with hot chocolate. After studying the map, we figured out that our car was parked over three kilometers away. She offered us a ride back to our car and we accepted gladly. I felt relieved to see our rental car again. What a blessing to have such an unforgettable experience

Along with Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs was an inventor behind Apple Computers. As the now-famous story goes, Jobs and Wozniak started Apple Computers in Jobs’ family’s garage in 1976, and the work they did there made computers more accessible and more affordable for consumers. Jobs left Apple in 1985, but he returned in 1997 and revitalized the company, leading to the creation of products like the iPod and iPhone.

C. Australia’s Social Media Policy History
D. Protect Youth from Today’s Social Media

On first impression, Zhang Xue doesn’t seem to care whether people like him. But behind his rough appearance lies a story of adversity and courage.
Zhang Xue, now 39, is the founder of ZXMOTO, a Chinese motorcycle brand that recently made history by winning two World Supersport races in Portugal. Few people know that his journey to success was filled with setbacks.
Growing up in a poor family in Hunan, Zhang had to drop out of school at an early age. He became an apprentice in a small repair shop, working long hours for little pay. Many people laughed at his dream of building a high-performance Chinese motorcycle. “You’re just a repairman,” they said. “You’ll never make it.”
But Zhang refused to give up. He spent his savings on second-hand books and taught himself engineering at night. When he finally started his own company in 2024, he faced even greater challenges. Foreign suppliers refused to sell him key parts, hoping to keep their technological advantage. Instead of backing down, Zhang decided to develop his own engine.
“There were times when I wanted to quit,” Zhang admits. “But every time I thought about my dream, I found the courage to keep going.” After countless failures and sleepless nights, his team overcame one technical problem after another. They developed an independent engine that could compete with the world’s best.
His perseverance paid off. In March 2026, ZXMOTO’s 820RR-RS bike won two World Supersport races, beating giants like Ducati and Yamaha. Zhang’s story has inspired millions of young people in China. “If you have a dream,” he says, “don’t let anyone tell you it’s impossible. Adversity only makes you stronger.”

11. What is the main message of Zhang Xue’s story?
A. Success comes only to those with a good education.
B. Foreign technology is necessary for success.
C. Wealth is the most important thing in life.
D. Adversity and courage can lead to great achievements.
