Passage A
Why Learning Another Language Changes Attention
Learning another language does not give a person a completely different brain, but it can change what the learner notices. A language directs attention to sounds, word order and social details that may have been easy to ignore before. This change is not limited to the classroom; learners may notice the same details while watching a film or listening to travelers at a station.
For example, a learner may begin to hear the difference between two sounds that once seemed the same. Another language may require speakers to choose different words according to how well they know someone. To communicate, the learner must pay attention not only to meaning but also to relationship and situation. In this way, a grammar choice can become a small lesson in seeing a conversation from another person’s position.
This constant practice can strengthen what researchers call “attention control”—the ability to focus on useful information and ignore a distraction. The effect is not magic and does not appear after memorizing a few word lists. It grows through regular listening, speaking and switching between languages. Researchers are careful not to claim that bilingual people are automatically better at every mental task; age, practice and the type of task all matter.
Language learning also increases tolerance for uncertainty. During a real conversation, learners rarely understand every word. They use context, tone and known word parts to build a reasonable meaning. With experience, an unknown expression becomes a problem to explore rather than a reason to stop. A learner may ask for an example, check an idea from the next sentence and revise an early guess. Such flexible thinking is often more valuable than pretending to understand everything.
These benefits do not mean everyone must become perfectly fluent. Even a modest level can open access to people, stories and ideas. The key is active use: noticing, trying, receiving feedback and trying again. Language study changes attention most when learners use the language to solve real communication problems.
1.What may a grammar choice teach a learner to notice?
A.Only the length of a sentence. B.Another person’s relationship and situation.
C.The price of a language course. D.Whether a film has subtitles.
2.Why does the writer mention the researchers’ careful claim?
A.To argue that every mental task is the same.
B.To prove age never affects learning.
C.To show that the effects should not be exaggerated.
D.To advise learners to avoid switching languages.
3.What does the underlined word “tolerance” probably mean here?
A.A decision to accept an incorrect translation.
B.A rule that prevents people from asking questions.
C.A talent for remembering every unknown expression.
D.An ability to remain comfortable with something imperfect.
4.Which action shows flexible thinking in Paragraph 4?
A.Using later information to revise a guess.
B.Keeping an early guess without checking it.
C.Stopping at the first unknown word.
D.Pretending that every detail is clear.
5.What is the writer’s main purpose?
A.To promise perfect fluency quickly.
B.To explain how active language use can shape attention and thinking habits.
C.To compare the grammar of six languages.
D.To prove bilingual learners are better at every task.
长难句解析
1.原句:A language directs attention to sounds, word order and social details that may have been easy to ignore before.语言会引导人们关注语音、词序以及一些社交细节,而这些细节在过去很容易被忽略。
✅句子结构拆解:
主句:A language directs attention to sounds, word order and social details
主语:A language;谓语:directs;宾语:attention;
`that may have been easy to ignore before` 是定语从句,先行词是 `social details`(也包含前面并列的 sounds, word order),that 在从句中作主语。
2.原句:To communicate, the learner must pay attention not only to meaning but also to relationship and situation.为了完成交流,学习者不仅要关注语义,还要留意人际关系与场景。
✅句子结构拆解:
`To communicate`:动词不定式作目的状语(为了交流)
主句:the learner must pay attention
固定搭配:not only … but also …** 不但…… 而且……,连接两个介词短语 `to meaning` 和 `to relationship and situation`
3.原句:This constant practice can strengthen what researchers call “attention control”—the ability to focus on useful information and ignore a distraction.这种持续的练习能够增强研究者所说的 “注意力控制能力”—— 即聚焦有用信息、忽略干扰的能力。
✅句子结构拆解:
主句:This constant practice can strengthen
`what researchers call “attention control”` 是宾语从句,what 在从句中作 call 的宾语;
破折号后面:`the ability to focus on useful information and ignore a distraction` 是同位语,用来解释说明 attention control;
`to focus on… and ignore…` 不定式作后置定语,修饰 ability。
Passage B
The Greeting That Changed
On her first morning at a school in New Zealand, Yao saw her host sister Maia press her nose and forehead gently against an older woman’s face. Yao looked away because she felt she might be watching a private moment. Later, Maia explained that the greeting was a hongi used on special occasions in Māori culture.
Yao wanted to show respect, so she searched for instructions online. The next day she moved forward too quickly when she met Maia’s aunt. Both of them laughed, and the aunt kindly showed her how to pause and follow the other person’s movement. Yao discovered that a video could show the shape of a greeting, but not decide whether a particular person wished to use it.
The experience made Yao think about greetings at home. She had often told foreign visitors, “Just shake hands in China.” Now she realized that greetings depended on age, relationship, place and personal choice. Some friends waved; some older relatives nodded; close family members might hug after a long separation.
For a class project, Yao and Maia interviewed ten families. They did not create a chart saying one country used one greeting. Instead, they wrote questions people could ask themselves: Is this a formal event? Does the other person seem comfortable? Can I wait and follow their lead? Their teacher placed these questions before the examples because good cultural communication begins with attention, not with a fixed national rule.
Yao learned useful cultural facts, but her biggest lesson was not a list of movements. It was the habit of watching, asking and adjusting with respect. Facts gave her a useful starting point, while the other person’s response guided what she did next.
1.Why did Yao look away at first?
A.She felt the greeting might be private. B.She disliked the older woman.
C.She was asked to leave. D.She did not see the greeting.
2.What limitation of the online video did Yao discover?
A.It gave the history but not the movement.
B.It could not show whether a person wanted that greeting.
C.It was recorded in the wrong country.
D.It only explained Chinese greetings.
3.What does “these questions” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Instructions for producing a country chart.
B.Questions asked by ten families about school.
C.Questions about situation, comfort and following another’s lead.
D.Examples of greetings used only in China.
4.Why did the students write questions instead of a country chart?
A.They had no interview results. B.They studied only one family.
C.They could not draw a chart. D.They wanted to avoid oversimplifying culture.
5.Which title best expresses Yao’s final understanding?
A.Let Respect Guide Cultural Knowledge B.Learn a Rule for Every Country
C.Copy the Movement Exactly D.Avoid Unfamiliar Greetings

No man is an island.
— John Donne (British poet)
Human beings are social—we like being with other people and communicating. And one effective way of communicating is speaking face to face.
Intonation (语调) is one of the reasons why face-to-face communication is powerful, because it helps to express more meanings. For example, yesterday you invited your friend to go shopping at the weekend, and he texted that he’d like to. Now, when you read these words on your phone, you may think he has meant “yes”. However, without hearing his intonation, it can be very difficult to know: Did he reply with real interest, or was he just being polite?
Body language makes a big difference, too. Most communication experts agree that it has the biggest influence on how we receive messages. For example, if your friend rolls eyes (翻白眼) when he says he’d like to go shopping, you can be sure this is actually the last thing he wants to do!
How we listen also plays a key role in face-to-face communication. When people speak to us, do we give them full attention, or do we think about how to reply? Do we show our interest in what they’re saying by nodding our head or looking at their eyes to encourage them to continue?
Communication isn’t just about words. Even if you don’t speak a foreign language well, you’ll still be able to have a basic conversation with the right body language and intonation and show that you are listening!

Passage 1
①When you ask someone a question in English, it could come across as a little rude if you say something too directly. Luckily, there are a lot of different expressions that help you sound more polite. Here are some examples of the polite expressions.
②Start with “excuse me” or “pardon me” to get a person’s attention. If you’ re coming over to a stranger and want to ask him or her a question, try one of these expressions to start your conversation and show your politeness (礼貌). For example, you can ask, “Excuse me, where is the nearest bus stop?” or “Pardon me, is there a bathroom over here?”
③Begin a question with “may” if you need to ask for permission (允许). Starting a question with “may” is a great idea for making your request sound more polite. Rather than saying directly what you need or want to do, ask the other person if it’s okay for you to do it. For example, you can say, “May I use your phone for a minute?”
④Use “can”, “could” or “would” when you make a request. Leading right away with a question word such as “where” or “how” might make your question sound rude. For example, instead of asking “Where is the bathroom?” you could say “Would you mind telling me where the bathroom is?”
⑤Say “please” once in your question. Saying “please” shows that you have good manners, so don’t forget to say it when you’re requesting something. You can either add please to the start or the end of your question to make it sound more polite. For example, you can say “May I have another cookie, please?”

Passage 2
The Power of Imitation in Language Learning
Imitation is one of the most natural and effective ways to learn a new language. From the moment we are born, we learn by imitating the sounds and actions of those around us. This is how we first learn to speak. Even as adults, imitation remains a powerful tool for language acquisition.
When you imitate a native speaker, you are not just copying their words. You are also learning their pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm. This helps you sound more natural and fluent. Studies have shown that learners who imitate native speakers often develop better speaking skills than those who do not. Imitation can also help you understand the culture behind the language. By copying the way people speak, you can learn about their values and customs.
However, imitation is not just about repeating what you hear. It is also about understanding why people say things in a certain way. This is where active imitation comes in. Active imitation involves thinking about what you are imitating and making it your own. With practice, you can use imitation to become a more confident and effective communicator.
In conclusion, imitation is a valuable skill for language learners. It can help you speak more naturally, understand the culture, and improve your overall communication skills. So, don't be afraid to imitate. It is a sign of a good language learner.

Passage A
Why Learning Another Language Changes Attention
主语:A language;谓语:directs;宾语:attention;
`what researchers call “attention control”` 是宾语从句,what 在从句中作 call 的宾语;
破折号后面:`the ability to focus on useful information and ignore a distraction` 是同位语,用来解释说明 attention control;

【答案】1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D 5.A
【导语】本文主要介绍了Yao在新西兰体验毛利问候礼hongi,从中意识到不能机械照搬网络上的礼仪动作,文化问候需要结合场合、对方感受,学会尊重与观察,理解跨文化交流的真谛。
【详解】1.文章第1段“Yao looked away because she felt she might be watching a private moment.”表明Yao起初移开视线是因为她觉得这可能是一个私密的时刻。
2.文章第2段“Yao discovered that a video could show the shape of a greeting, but not decide whether a particular person wished to use it.”表明Yao发现线上视频的局限是没法体现对方是否想要用这种问候方式。
3.文章第4段“Instead, they wrote questions people could ask themselves: Is this a formal event? Does the other person seem comfortable? Can I wait and follow their lead?”,“these questions”指代的是前文列出的关于场合、对方舒适度以及是否跟随对方引导的问题。
4.文章第4段“They did not create a chart saying one country used one greeting. Instead, they wrote questions...because good cultural communication begins with attention, not with a fixed national rule.”表明“一个国家对应一种问候”的图表是把文化过度简化了,所以他们用提问代替图表是为了避免把文化过度简单化,强调沟通需关注具体情况而非固定规则。
5.文章最后一段“It was the habit of watching, asking and adjusting with respect...”

根据材料内容选择最佳答案,并将其标号填入题前括号内。
1.How does the writer develop the main body paragraphs?
A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons.
C.By asking questions. D.By telling stories.
2.Which expression is not mentioned according to the text?
A.May I use your phone for a minute?
B.Excuse me, do you know how to get to the zoo?
C.Could you please tell me where to throw this away?
D.Sorry to bother you, but have you seen Mary?
3.What can we know from the text?
A.We’d better use “please” at the start of a question.
B.It’s always rude to ask questions directly in English.
C.Using “may” to start a question is a polite way to ask for permission.
D.We should only use “excuse me” to start a conversation with a stranger.
4.Which shows the structure (结构)of the text?
A. B. C. D.
5.What is the main idea of the text?
A.How to start a conversation. B.How to get someone’s attention.
C.How to ask questions in different languages. D.How to make questions sound more polite in English.

4.文章第①段总起全文,点明主题;第②③④⑤段分别并列介绍四种礼貌提问的方法,属于总分结构,对应C选项结构图。
5.根据文章第①段“When you ask someone a question in English,… Here are some examples of the polite expressions.”可知,全文核心是讲解如何让英语中的提问听起来更有礼貌。A、B只概括局部内容,C“不同语言”原文未提及。
It is a sign of a good language learner.

a kind of表示“一种”,故填a。

interesting(有趣的)和common(常见的)均不如popular贴合“无处不在”带来的流行感。
2.句意:表情符号有助于使每次对话看起来更友好和积极。
引用上一句“First, emojis set the tone of the conversation.”,表情符号设定对话的基调,也就是让对话给人的主观感受变得友好积极,因此用feel表示“感觉”。
that不表疑问,if不如whether正式。
5.句意:把简单的对话变成生动的视觉交流。
该空修饰visual exchanges,强调对话变得有活力,用lively。amazing(令人惊讶的)和alive(活着的)均不如lively贴合“对话变生动”的语境。
6.句意:有时一个表情符号的含义可能与我们认为的不同,这容易导致误解。
前文提到“mean something different”,即含义不同,因此容易产生误解,选misunderstandings(误解)。mistakes(错误)和tricks(把戏)均不符合“含义差异”带来的后果。
7.句意:以“合十”表情符号为例。
固定搭配take...as an example表示“以……为例”,因此选example。gift和introduction均不构成该搭配。
8.句意:把有趣的表情符号留给朋友间的交谈。
前文建议根据场合使用表情符号,此处表示“保留”有趣的表情用于朋友间,选Save。Buy和Leave均不符合“根据场合选择性使用”的逻辑。
9.句意:另一条建议是把文字和表情符号搭配使用。
前文“First, match them to the situation.”
