Hello, everyone! Here comes this month’s School Brain Game. We’re going to talk about what you would like to invent (发明). Let your imagination run wild and post (发布) your ideas below.
—Andrew, Student Union President
Students have a lot of homework. They often go to bed late and wake up early for school. I’d like to invent a machine to help you ________ in the morning without waking you up. It would carefully pick you up, take you to the bathroom and brush your teeth. It would get you dressed and set you down at the dining room table. Then it would gently wake you for breakfast. You’d go to school on time while still getting a good night’s sleep!
—Michelle, from Grade 9
I’d invent a time machine that could take us to any day in history. We would finally be able to answer questions like “What killed all the dinosaurs?” Just think how different life would be if every question about history could be answered. We would know almost everything. And we could visit the past or the future to see how humans have changed. Imagine visiting your ancestors (祖先)! Imagine going to the future to tell people about life in the past! Just think about all that fun!
—Troy, from Grade 8
A flying car! You could go anywhere you wanted. It could prevent traffic jams (堵塞) during rush hour. We wouldn’t have to build so many highways. There would be more space to plant trees. The air would be cleaner and fresher. My flying car would be powered by solar energy (太阳能). We could save the Earth and all the plants and animals too.
—Rebecca, from Grade 7

Have you ever heard of “digital embroidery” (数字刺绣)? It is a modern way to keep the traditional Chinese art of embroidery alive. In the past, embroidery required artists to spend months sitting in front of a frame, using needles and silk threads to create beautiful patterns. However, due to its complexity and the time it took, fewer young people were willing to learn this skill.
To change this, a team of college students from Zhejiang University developed a special machine. They combined computer programming with traditional embroidery techniques. First, users can draw any pattern they like on a tablet or even upload a photo. Then, the computer software translates the image into instructions for the embroidery machine. Within minutes, the machine uses robotic arms to control the needles, stitching (缝纫) the pattern onto the cloth perfectly.
“Our goal is not to replace human artists,” said Li Hua, the team leader. “Instead, we want to lower the barrier (门槛) so that everyone can experience the joy of creating embroidery. We also use eco-friendly threads that are stronger and brighter than traditional ones.”
The team has already donated several machines to rural schools. Students there can now design their own school badges (徽章) or small gifts using the digital embroidery machine. When we think of inventors, we usually imagine old men in white coats surrounded by wires and tools. However, 17-year-old Emma Rodriguez from Miami is changing that image. She recently invented a low-cost water purification (净化) device that is now being used in several remote villages in South America.
Emma’s journey started two years ago during a geography lesson. Her teacher showed a video of children drinking dirty water, which led to serious health problems. Emma was shocked. “I thought, ‘This isn’t fair,’” she recalled. “I wanted to do something to help.”
She began researching water purification methods online. Most existing devices were too expensive or required electricity, which many villages lacked. Emma decided to focus on a solar-powered solution. Using a second-hand microscope she bought with her pocket money, she studied how UV (紫外线) light kills bacteria. She then spent months designing a small, portable device shaped like a water bottle.
The biggest challenge was the cost. To keep it affordable, Emma used recycled plastic and a cheap UV LED light. She tested over fifty designs. Once, her device leaked (漏水) during a test, soaking her notes. “I felt like crying,” she admitted, “but I knew giving up wasn’t an option.”
Finally, she succeeded. Her device can clean one liter of water in just 15 minutes using only sunlight. It costs less than $5 to make. An international charity organization noticed her work and helped her send 500 units to Colombia. Local residents say the device has greatly improved their health.
Emma has no plans to patent her invention for profit. Instead, she has open-sourced her design online, allowing anyone to download and produce it for free. “Ideas should be shared, especially when they can save lives,” she says. “I hope more teens realize that age is just a number. If you see a problem, you can be the one to solve it.”

A hundred years ago, it was difficult for people to communicate over long distances. Then Samuel Morse invented the electric telegraph and the Morse code (摩斯密码).
Morse code is a series of dots and dashes. The dashes are about three times longer than the dots. Here is the code for the letters of the alphabet.
The Morse code also includes codes for numbers and punctuation signs (标点符号). Like texting, it also has groups of letters that stand for phrases. For example, the letters CUL stand for “see you later”. And the famous SOS signal stands for “save our souls”
The electric telegraph could send messages using electricity. The worker at one end used a machine to tap (敲击) out a special code for each letter of the alphabet. The system changed the tapping into electrical movements and sent them to another place. Then they were changed back into the code at the place. The code was printed on a paper tape which was set on another machine. The worker on the receiving end used the code to change the message back into words. Later, workers learned to translate the code just by listening.
Today Morse code is used mostly by radio workers. Some pilots flying planes by instruments use Morse code to decide their lane’s location. But perhaps the most exciting use of Morse code is helping disabled people communicate. There have been cases in which people have learned to communicate using their eyelids to send messages using Morse code. Or they have used a finger to tap out messages.

Building a Railway on the Roof of the World
The Qinghai-Xizang Railway was completed in 2006. It connects Xining to Lhasa, a huge distance of 1,956 kilometres, and it is the highest railway in the world, reaching 5,072 metres above sea level at Tanggula Pass.
The building of the railway was a great challenge. Creative ideas were needed to solve different problems. In summer, the top layer of the frozen ground would melt and become too soft to build on, so pipes were used to keep the ground hard. However, in some places, it was impossible to build the railway over the frozen ground, so tunnels had to be created instead. In some other places, bridges were built to keep the railway up above the ground. These bridges are animal-friendly and allow animals to pass under the tracks.
The railway has brought many benefits. It has increased tourism and economic development in the area. People now can travel more easily between the cities. The lessons learnt and experience gained from building this railway will help improve transport in other similar places in the world.
This project is a great example of how creative ideas can solve difficult problems. It shows that with determination and smart thinking, even the hardest tasks can be achieved.
68.What is the altitude of the Qinghai-Xizang Railway at Tanggula Pass?
A.1,956 metres. B.5,072 metres. C.2,006 metres. D.1,900 metres.

Turning Ideas into Reality
Have you ever had a great idea but didn’t know how to make it happen? Many people have creative thoughts, but few turn them into reality. 1
First, write your idea down. 2 When you put your idea on paper, you can see it more clearly and begin to develop it.
Second, do your research. Find out if someone else has already created something similar. 3 Learning from others can save you time and help you improve your own work.
Third, take action. Many people dream of making something new but never start. 4 Don’t be afraid to fail—every failure teaches you something valuable.
Finally, share your idea with others. Feedback can help you see things you might have missed. 5 Sometimes a different point of view can make your idea much better.
Remember, every great invention started as a simple idea. The key is not just having the idea, but taking steps to make it real.
A.If so, don’t get discouraged—you can still make it better.
B.Even the best ideas can be forgotten if they’re not written down.
C.So how do we turn our ideas into real things?
D.The most important step is to begin—even if it’s just a small step.
E.Always keep your ideas secret from others.
F.They can also give you suggestions you haven’t considered.

In the ice cap region near China’s Zhongshan Station in Antarctica, a six-legged robotic dog recently completed some scientific tests successfully. A video shows the robotic dog is walking on the snow and ice. 6
The developers designed a special type of shoes for the robotic dog. “ 7 So it can get used to the low temperatures of Antarctica. Also, when it touches the ice, the pressure it puts out becomes very small and causes little damage to the ice surface. This ensures the robotic dog can walk on the ice as if it were level ground.”, said Mao Shijie, the head of the six-legged robotic team.
8 This lets it work for two hours even in the cold Antarctic temperature. But this action alone isn’t enough. So, the scientific team looks for more advanced ways to make its battery life longer. “For scientific research, we usually need it to work for more than four hours. 9 In such cases, we add two additional batteries on top of the robotic dog, ensuring it can keep working for 4-6 hours.” Mao added.
According to CCTV, the six-legged robotic dog has now successfully completed tests such as carrying heavy things on the ice surfaces of Antarctica. 10 The research team said that the robotic dog will be improved to meet other needs of the scientific research teams in the future.
A.The robot is so heavy that it can’t move fast.
B.It is carrying a box on its back, without falling.
C.It can carry things weighing from 70 to 100 kilograms.
D.No matter how cold it is, we often do ice surface research.
E.The robotic dog not only has specially designed shoes but also a special battery.
F.The material of the shoes itself can stand as low as -40℃.

Many middle schools now hold “Idea Competition” every year to encourage students to think of creative ways to improve school life. 11 You don’t need to make a real product to join the competition — even a small smart idea is enough.
Last year, 14-year-old Li Hua from No.3 Middle School noticed that students often forgot to take their umbrellas when it rained suddenly. 12 She suggested that the school put shared umbrella stands at each teaching building gate, with 20 umbrellas each. Students can take an umbrella for free when it rains and return it later. 13 Now the shared umbrella stands are already in use in her school, and almost 300 students have used them this term.
Another student, Zhang Wei, found that the books in the school corner were old and not popular. 14 He suggested setting up a book exchange box: students can bring their old books to the box and take away other books they like. The idea was welcomed by both teachers and students. Now there are over 200 new books in the exchange box.
15 Even a small idea can make a big difference to your school. Next time you notice a small problem in your school, think about how to solve it — maybe your idea will become real too!
A.He came up with an idea to make the book corner more popular.
B.The competition asks students to find small problems in school and think of solutions.
C.So she thought of a great idea to solve this problem.
D.There are many other great ideas from the competition every year.
