Have you ever asked yourself why people often have trouble learning English?I hadn't,until one day
my five-year-old son asked me whether there was ham in a hamburger. There isn't.This made me realize
that there's no egg in eggplant either.Neither is there pine nor apple in pineapple. This got me thinking
how English can be a crazy language to learn.
For example,in our free time we can sculpt a sculpture and paint a painting, but we take a photo.
And when we are traveling we say that we are in the car or the taxi, but on the train or bus! While we're
doing all this traveling,we can get seasick at sea, airsick in the air and carsick in a car,but we don't get
homesick when we get back home. And speaking of home, why aren't homework and housework the same
thing?
f“hard”is the opposite of“sof”,why are“hardly”and“softly”not an opposing pair?f
harmless actions are the opposite of harmful actions, why are shameless and shameful behaviors the same?
When we look out of the window and see rain or snow,we can say“it's raining”or“it's snowing”.
But when we see sunshine,we can't say "it's sunshining".
Even the smallest words can be confusing. When you see the capitalized "WHO"in a medical
report,do you read it as the“who”in“Who's that?”What about“T”and“US”?
You also have to wonder at the unique madness of a language in which a house can burn up as it
burns down,in which you fill in a form by filling it out,and in which an alarm is only heard once it
goes off!
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race. That
is why when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And that is
why when I wind up my watch,it starts, but when I wind up this passage,it ends.
24.What pushed the author to think deeply about English language?
A.English spelling rules.
B.His son's poor grammar.
C.The strange naming of foods.
D.Confusion in daily expression use.
25.What does the example of“hardly”and“softly”show?
A.Word use has strict rules.
B.Adverbs are formed regularly.
C.Similar words share meanings.
D.Opposites don't always match.
26.What does the last paragraph imply about English?
A.It is easy to learn.
B.It has perfect patterns.
C.It is quite creative.
D.It needs development.
27.What does the author think of English's strangeness?
A.Attractive.
B.Worrying.
C.Confusing.
D.Simple.

Thanks to China's successful environmental protection, wild animals are turning up more often in
places where humans live. This is a sign that ecosystems (are getting healthier, but it also
creates a new challenge for people and wildlife to live together peacefully.
In Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve,Qinghai, drivers often see a gray wolf near the highway. Some
kind people used to throw food to it,making the wolf depend on human-given food instead of hunting in
the wild.
In Nanjing,Jiangsu, similar meetings caused problems:last year,a wild pig swam across the
Yangtze River and walked into a neighborhood, attracting crowds. Two days later, another wild pig
attacked a community security guard, and one died in the water when villagers tried to drive it away.A
two-year study at Nanjing Agricultural University, using infrared cameras(红外相机),found63.4%of
videos showed wild pigs-and this shows that wild pigs are quite common near cities.
Why do wild animals get closer to humans? On one hand, better protection improved their habitats:
more forests, cleaner rivers, and plenty of food.On the other hand, cities are growing bigger:in the past
decade,China's cities have grown by around 10%,leaving less space for wildlife. This overlap brings
risks.For example,grassland marmots(草原旱獭)may carry dangerous diseases,and wolves or wild
pigs could attack if threatened.Feeding or touching them not only endangers people but also breaks their
natural habits-young ones may never learn to hunt, unable to survive in the wild.
To solve this, experts stress "no feeding,no touching".If you meet a wild animal, stay at least 10
meters away and avoid close-up photos.Governments build green paths linking forests and wetlands to
help animals move without entering cities.Schools also help:many have lessons on local wildlife,
teaching students to understand animal behaviors and avoid these "wars".
Wild animals are our natural neighbors, not pets.Only by respecting their habits and keeping
distance can we build a safe, peaceful relationship with them.
28.What problem did feeding wild animals cause in Hoh Xil?
A.It discouraged visitors coming here.
B.It reduced the wolf's hunting ability.
C.It pushed animals to destroy highway systems.
D.It led to a rapid increase in the number of the wolf.
29.What can we know from the two-year study at Nanjing Agricultural University?
A.Wild pigs are protected by local communities.
B.Most wildlife actively avoids city environments.
C.Infrared cameras are mainly used to monitor wildlife.
D.Wild animals'contact with humans in near cities is increasing.
30.What does the underlined word "overlap"in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Shared living space.
B.Growth in habitats.
C.The fight over resources.
D.Misunderstanding of behaviors.

31.What is a key to human-wildlife harmony according to experts?

B.Building more structures for animal movement.

D.Giving space and showing more respect.

The town of Salem,in New Jersey,is tied to a rather famous story where tomatoes were once seen as
"poison apples".While the story may not be totally true,it shows how tomatoes became a beloved food.
The Aztecs are known for growing, consuming ()and naming the tomato, and the fruit was
later brought to Europe by Spanish and Portuguese settlers in the 16th century.Tomatoes spread slowly in
Europe because many Europeans avoided the color red, which was regarded as wrong, bad and
supernatural.
By the 18th century, the tomato was called the "poison apple"because rich people in Europe and
America would fall ill or die after eating it.But it wasn't the consumption of the tomato that led to their
illness or death.Instead,it was the plates the rich used to dine on,which contained high level of lead
()When the acid (in tomatoes reacted with the lead,it caused poisoning. This made people
think tomatoes were poisonous.
In the late 18th century, people in America were growing tomatoes out of curiosity, not eating them.
But how the "poison apple"lost its bad image and became a beloved piece of produce?Legend has it that
one man helped change public opinion-Robert Gibbon Johnson of Salem,New Jersey, who stood on
Salem's courthouse steps in 1820,eating a basket of tomatoes for all the public to see. When he didn't die
of poison, word spread that tomatoes were safe to eat. However,no record of Johnson's actions has ever
been found. But people did find evidence that Johnson actually grew tomatoes
Immigration to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries -particularly Italians, who
brought the pizza with them-contributed to the eventual consumption of tomatoes.By the 1830s,tomato
recipes became popular in America. The legend of Johnson grew, especially after a 1949 radio show acted
out his brave act.For years,Salem even held a Tomato Festival celebrating the story. The tomato's story
-from "poison apples"to kitchen favorite-shows how legend and facts can shape what we eat.
32.Why were tomatoes avoided in Europe?
A.The price was too high to grow.
B.The color was viewed negatively
C.A story caused great fear of them.
D.They were only for rich families.
33.What did Johnson do to change public views on tomatoes according to stories?

D.He ate tomatoes in public to show they were safe.
