第一次月考复习之阅读填表10篇
(南京专用)
One of the biggest challenges in trying to achieve any personal goal is that you put them off until tomorrow, or next week. Unluckily, tomorrow never gets here. If you want to achieve a goal, you have to start on it today. Let’s learn some ways.
One goal at a time.
Often the problem is that you try to take on too many goals at once. You have a lot of things you want to complete. Even two goals at once is difficult. For now, one goal at a time. Once that’s finished, you can go to the next one. Make sure you really want it.
Make sure you really want it.
It’s not enough to say, “It would be nice to learn French” or “It would be cool to do yoga every morning”. It has to be something you really want. Ask yourself why you set this goal, and how much time you need to spend on it. That’s important to do early, or you won’t make time for it.
Keep it simple.
It’s important not to make your personal goal too big. You don’t want to have a huge list of things to do. Instead, focus (关注) on a smaller sub-goal that will lead you to your bigger goal. Another way is to focus first on creating a habit leading you to your goal. For example, focus on forming the habit of walking each day. Once you’ve formed that habit, focus on drinking only water and then on eating fruits instead of junk snacks. And so on, until you’ve reached your goal.
Stay focused.
One of the most challenging things to achieve goals is keeping your focus on that goal. You may be attracted by other things, and when you lose focus, you suddenly stop making time for the goal. Therefore, you had better put a poster on your wall, or make your goal your computer desktop picture. Also you can tell others about it and have them help you achieve your goal.
How to Make the Time for Your Personal Goals
What makes it 1 for you to achieve your goal is that you choose to put it off. However, time 2 for no man. Please start on your goal right now.
Setting a goal at a time
You should 3 taking on too many goals at once.
Once you complete one goal, you can go to the next one.
Making sure the goal is exactly what you want
Be sure to know the 4 for setting this goal and how long it takes you to achieve the goal.
You won’t make time for it 5 you do it early.
Keeping it easy to reach
Begin with the 6 goals and develop a habit that will lead you to your goal step by step.
7 focused on it
Put your goal where you can see it 8 in order not to be attracted by something else.
Tell others about your goal and ask them to encourage you.

Other people think they’re still entertaining. What do you think? Has reality television gone too far?
Yes—it’s just so fake
There’s nothing real about reality television. These shows may not have actors or scripts, so what’s the point in watching? Competition shows can also promote (促进) the idea that it’s OK to do anything in order to win, which is a terrible lesson for viewers. Finally, it’s no fun to turn everyday hobbies like baking or crafting into competitions. People should enjoy those hobbies for the sake of doing them, not so they can win a contest or get on television.
No—it’s all in good fun
Reality TV is harmless entertainment that viewers know isn’t “real”. It still gives people something to bond (与……紧密联系) over when they talk about the latest episode or host watch parties. There are plenty of reality shows that are good-natured and not mean. Even competition programs can teach viewers that getting ahead often involves hard work, discipline (自律), and sticking to a goal. Reality shows can also demonstrate (证明) the value of teamwork and cooperation. Finally, reality shows like kids’ baking or crafting competitions can give participants a creative outlet and inspire viewers to take up a new hobby or find a new passion.

Did you ever look at your parents and wish they were healthier? You’re not the only one. We did a survey of some kids, and the survey shows that 50% said they worry about their parents’ health, and that 75% of the kids would like their parents to make changes to be healthier. Maybe your mum and dad would be surprised to learn that you care about them.
Here are the tips on talking to your parents about their healthy habits.
▲Create a list
Try to remember what got you thinking about this topic. Is there an unhealthy thing you’d like to see them stop or reduce often? Is there a healthy habit like exercising or eating fruit and vegetables that you would like them to do more often? Get your list together. And also remember to put relaxing more and getting more sleep in your list—two great and healthy ideas for parents and kids!
▲ Practice how to say it
Changing can be hard. And it’s not always easy to hear that someone you love thinks you need to do it. So you’ll want to bring up this topic in just the right way. If your parents wanted you to make a change, how would you like them to ask? A gentle and caring way often works best.
▲Make a decision together
Once you bring up the topic, remember that both you and your parents should agree on what steps to take next. Picking many goals is not helpful to them. It can be overwhelming (难以承受的) if you try to make too many changes all at once. If your goal is too general, you don’t have specific steps in mind.
▲Cheer them on
Encourage your parents as they start making changes. Tell them you’re proud of them. An extra hug or a home-made card can give them what they need to keep going down the healthy road. What a great way to show how much you care!

Vote for Ben Barton!Just writing to let you know it’s time to choose the Form Captain again. Yes, I know it’s a dreadful bore thinking about it, but to save your tiny brains the effort, I’ve got a dead simple solution—vote for me, Ben Barton, the number one choice for Form Five.
Why? Easy! Who came top of exams last year? Who’s the leading goal scorer in the school team? Who knows how to calm Mr Wilkinson down when he’s in a mood? Who hid Mrs Tollbart’s specs so she couldn’t mark our homework last week? Who will represent you best at the school council, as long as you pay me (just joking!)? Who can do juggling (杂耍) tricks with the bean bags?
And just think what the alternatives are! Sally Hunt—the biggest airhead in the class? Dwayne “the Gorilla” Smith? I don’t think so. Denzil Steel-Perkins? With a name like that he’d better stay class librarian. There’s really only one choice—me! So vote, vote, vote for Brainy Ben, Isay!
Dear Fellow Class Members,
I’m writing to ask for your vote in the elections for Form Captain. I realize it’s hard to decide who to vote for. It’s easy to choose your best friend, or the person who shouts loudest, but it’s best to choose someone who will help the whole class. I’d like to give you five reasons for considering me.
1. I kept the class library in perfect shape last year so that we won the Tidy Books competition.
2. I saved Izzy from eating himself to death when someone (whose initials begin with BB) put too much food in his water tank (水缸).
3. I lent everyone in the class my Supertronics DVD last term, though I’m still waiting for it back from The Person Who Overfed Izzy.
4. I will campaign for an extra five minutes at break time.
5. I have already asked Mr Wilkinson if we can have after-school footie (足球) and netball.
Whoever you vote for, I’ll still be your friend.
Best wishes

Look! Growing up is often seen as a journey with different stages (阶段). As we pass through each one, our understanding of “making it” changes. Here’s a look at each stage and the surprising lessons they teach us about life and growth.
Primary School: “Almost Done”
In primary school, life is simple. With praise from teachers and small achievements, children are often led to believe that they have almost mastered (掌握) what they need for the future. “Almost done” perfectly expresses this sense, since each year they achieve something new, like learning to spell or completing a book.
Children may feel great at this stage, but it’s only the start of their journey, preparing them for future challenges and learning.
High School: “Very Close (接近)”
High school brings a new level of responsibility and choice. Students face more important tests, begin thinking about careers, and learn to be on their own. At this stage, many believe they’re “very close” to adulthood.
In fact, high school is for trying new things, not being perfect at them. Students are introduced to many sides of life but still have much to learn.
University: “Yes!”
University or college is a great achievement, and completing a degree (学位) often feels like climbing to the top. With specialized knowledge and skills, many students believe they're fully prepared to face the world.
The “Yes!” moment of graduation soon gives way to the reality that a degree is just one part of the bigger picture in building a wonderful career and life.
Life: “What!”
Upon entering the “real world”, young people often feel the challenges of life hard to deal with. Grown-up life doesn’t come with a guidebook. Responsibilities like managing your money, keeping friendships, balancing work and life and staying well require skills not fully taught in school.
This stage teaches us that life is about never stopping learning. To do it well, we must be ready to adjust our courses (调整航线), understand our own hearts, and know when to change directions.
The truth about growing up is that each stage brings new lessons and challenges, from the ABCs and 123s to the discovery that success is a lifelong journey. Take this journey with an open mind, enjoy the ride, and be ready to learn from everything that happens.
What growing up really 1 us
Growing up isn’t a straight path to success. Each stage of life brings new challenges and 2 our understanding of success.
Different stages
Primary School
Children often come to believe they have well 3 for the future. But that’s far from the full picture.
High School
Students get more responsibility and choice by taking exams, thinking about careers, and learning to depend on 4 . Although they think it is close to adult life, the stage is only about trying.
University
Many students feel like 5 the top when graduating. However, they soon realize that a degree is not 6 for a wonderful career and life.

As junior high students, we often face difficult moments: a math test we fail, a speech we struggle with, or a sport we can’t master. How we think about these challenges is important—and that’s where “growth mindset” comes in.
A growth mindset means believing our abilities can get better, rather than being unchangeable all the time. People with a growth mindset usually focus on the process, effort and improvement not the result. This is different from a “fixed mindset” where people think “I’m bad at math” or “I’ll never be good at speaking”. With a growth mindset, you say, “I’m not good at this yet — but I can learn”.
Let’s take school life as an example. Suppose you get a low score on a science quiz. A fixed mindset makes you feel angry and hopeless: “I’m just not a science person”. But with a growth mindset, you look at your mistakes calmly. You ask the teacher for help, redo the wrong questions, study those topics more and even use the colour therapy. Next time, your score might be improved! It’s not about being perfect now — it’s about trying to get better step by step.
Growing this mindset isn’t hard. Above all, use the word “yet” often. Instead of “I can’t do this”, say “I can’t do this yet”. Also, when you face a setback, stay calm and don’t let your feelings like anger or sadness control you. Remember that mistakes are part of learning. Moreover, celebrate small progress. Cheer for your small steps forward after working out a difficult math problem.
Having a growth mindset helps us not just in school, but in life. It gives us courage to try new things when we fail. So let’s start thinking “I can grow” — and see how far we can go!
As teenagers, we often face difficult moments. Our 1 about hard situations matter a lot—and that’s exactly when “growth mindset” plays a role.
The meaning of a growth mindset
A growth mindset means thinking our skills can develop instead of being fixed forever. With a growth mindset, people pay more attention to how hard they try and how much they 2 instead of only caring about the result itself.
An 3 of a growth mindset
People with a growth mindset may face the mistakes in a 4 way. Go to the teacher, redo the wrong questions, study more and even try the colour therapy if he or she gets low marks in science exams.

A report by the charity Cancer Research UK has studied the development of preventing, detecting (发现) and treating cancer over the last 50 years. The results are very positive.
Cancer is a broad term for a collection of diseases that are caused by oddly (异常地) behaving cells growing out of control. It affects one in two people at some time in their life. The report, Cancer in the UK, looks at how the disease has been diagnosed (诊断) and treated, using data from 1973 to 2023.
The report states that the proportion (比例) of people in Britain (not including Northern Ireland) diagnosed with cancer has increased by almost half (47%). Early diagnosis can lead to earlier and more effective treatment. Half of people who are diagnosed with cancer today will live for at least 10 years, compared with a quarter of people in the early 1970s. Cancer Research UK’s director of research, Dr Catherine Elliott, said the studies send a message of hope to people affected by the disease.
Early diagnosis and new combinations of medicines have helped more people survive cancer, and specific blood tests have guided the treatment to make it as effective as possible.
As well as developing better treatments, experts are finding new ways to prevent cancer. A recent trial, with results published on 1 June, found that exercise can prevent early death from colon cancer and improve survival rates in the years after recovery (恢复). Colon cancer is a form of bowel cancer, the fourth most common type of cancer in the UK.
However, the report says there is still a lot to do. There are 1,900 children who are diagnosed with cancer each year, but it is very rare — less than 1% of the total in the UK. In fact, more than three quarters of people with cancer in the UK are aged over 60. On top of that, the population in the UK is ageing because they generally live longer than people did 50 years ago. More older people mean more people with cancer.
The UK Government is working on a National Cancer Plan for England. The plan will cover ways to prevent cancer and provide better support for those who have had the disease.

In China, unlike in many other countries, movies almost always have subtitles (字幕) in both Chinese and English. This common practice has several key purposes: to improve understanding, increase accessibility (易于理解和使用), and support cultural exchange.
First, China has many dialects (方言). People in different parts of China speak differently. Besides Mandarin and Cantonese, there are many other local dialects. Some movie characters speak in these dialects to make the story feel real. It presents a challenge to the understanding of viewers from other areas. Subtitles help everyone in China follow the story, no matter what dialect they speak.
Second, some actors have soft or deep voices. These voices can sound emotional but are sometimes hard to hear in a loud cinema, especially with powerful bass sound. Subtitles make sure viewers don’t miss any words.
Third, cinema sound is fixed. You can turn your TV up or down, but you cannot control the volume in a cinema. Sometimes, the background music or sound effects are too loud compared to the actors’ voices. The sound might not be perfect, but subtitles help viewers follow the story easily.
Moreover, subtitles make films more inclusive (包容性). They help deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers understand the dialogue, giving them a full and enjoyable experience.
Finally, English subtitles help Chinese movies go around the world. English is the world’s most popular second language. With English subtitles, international viewers, film festival judges, and movie critics can watch and understand Chinese films. This builds cross-cultural understanding and allows these films to be judged fairly on an international stage.
In short, subtitles do more than just translate words—they build a bridge between cultures. They turn every film into a place where people from all over the world can meet and share stories.

Processed food like frozen chips and pizzas is high in salt, sugar and fat. Already, the spread of cheap packaged food has a connection with more and more people who suffer from obesity (肥胖) around the world. Now scientists are trying to find out more proof of how our industrialized (工业化的) food supply may be affecting (影响) our health.
What does processed food mean?
The researchers came up with a system that groups foods into four categories. The system says highly processed food is mostly made of industrialized ingredients. Instant noodles (方便面) and fried chicken are common examples of highly processed food. But also included are products that can bring benefits to health such as morning cereals (谷类食物), energy bars and some kinds of yogurt.
How does processed food affect people?
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health had 200 people take part in a four-week study. They found that people eat about 500 more calories a day when fed mostly processed food than given minimally (最低限度地) processed food.
In another study, researchers in France found people who ate more processed food were more likely to have heart disease. A similar study in Spain also showed eating more processed food might lead to a higher risk of death.
Why does processed food affect people?
When given less processed food, people in the study produced more of a hormone (荷尔蒙) that reduces the appetite (胃口) and less of a hormone that causes hunger. Kevin Hall, one of the researchers who led the study, also said that the source of nutrients (营养物质) might make a difference. Fiber (纤维) from fruit and vegetables may be better for making people feel full than that added to processed food such as energy bars and yogurt.
What should people do?
Limiting processed food can be difficult, especially for people with limited time and energy. People, however, should try to change the way they eat. Another challenge is the wide range of processed food in the market. It’s essential for people to tell which ones might be better or worse as food companies continually advertise their products to mislead customers.

There’s nothing real about reality television. These shows may not have actors or scripts, so what’s the point in watching? Many shows place unhealthy emphasis on money and beauty, which makes viewers feel bad about their own lives and can harm their mental health.

Best wishes
Denzil

Life
It’s natural to feel unprepared for real life challenges. And this reminds you to 7 learning outside the classroom.
There is no end to growing up. Stay open to what is to come, find 8 from it and know there will always be more to learn and experience.
Do you think you are close to success? Please share at least one reason.

The methods of having a growth mindset
●Use the word “yet” often. Say “I can’t do this yet” instead of “I can’t do this”.
●Stay calm and control your feelings when 5 a setback.
●Celebrate small progress, like 6 one hard math problem.
7. What can a growth mindset give us when we fail? (No more than 8 words)

8. Your best friend often gets low marks in Maths exams. As a person with a growth mindset, please give him or her a useful method.
