B mile and Kitty are talking about their favourite types of literature. Work in peace and talk about your favorite types of literature. Use the conversation below as a model. What type of literature do you like best? Kitty. I like short stories best because I can read them even when i'm busy. They're not too long, but they still have interesting characters and exciting events. That's true. I like short stories too, but I think I like poems best. why? Poems often have lovely language. I like poems too, but sometimes I can't understand them unless I read them again and again. Yes, it's often hard to understand the parliament at first, but if you take your time, you will find the beauty in IT.
Pages one hundred and eight to one hundred and nine reading the lost leave. mili found a simplified short story by the famous american writer. Oh, Henry, here is a short story. The last leave, he has a very small chance. The doctor said to sue, if people don't want to live, I can't do much for them. John, I lay there very thin and very quiet, and burning with a fever. Eight, seven. John, I was counting, and a little later, six in a voice, still lower, an old old tree grew against the wall outside the window. Almost all its leaves had fAllen from its dark branches. There goes another one, only five left. Now five, what? Dear asked. So as he moved to john se's bedside leaves on the tree when the last leaf falls, I must go to, oh, I never heard of such a thing, said sue. There was anger in her voice. IT doesn't make any sense. What does an old tree have to do with you? John sey did not answer, try to sleep, said, so i'll go get burman. I want him to be the model for my picture. After I sell my drawing, I can buy more food to make you strong. Old bare men who lived on the first floor of their apartment building was also a painter. He was over sixty. He had always talked of painting a master piece, but he had yet to started sutoto bermant about Johnny SHE will die unless the last leave stays on the tree. Or woman cried, are there such fools? Do people die because leaves drop off a tree? After a night of beating rain and wild wind, there was still one dark Green leaf left on the tree. IT is the last one. IT will fall today, said Johnny, and I shall die at the same time. The next morning, the leaf was still there. Something has made that last leafs stay there to show me how wrong I was, said john sey. IT is wrong to want to die. John, I was getting Better. The next day, sue told Johnny, mister burman died. He was ill because of being out in the cold night. Look at the last leaf, didn't you ever wonder why never moved when the wind was blowing, its burman's masterpiece. He painted IT there the night that the last leaf fell.

Unit 8 The World of Literature
1. What does a play usually contain? Find examples from the excerpt on page 115.
Act and scene (e.g. “ACT 1, SCENE 1”)
A setting (e.g. “King Lear’s palace”)
Stage directions in brackets (e.g. “[King Lear sits in his seat. His three daughters stand before him.]”)
Lines (the words the characters speak)
Reading
Scan the excerpt from the play King Lear in Part A and answer the following questions.
He gives Goneril a large part of his land (“so much of all my lands ... with dark forests and open fields”), and gives Regan a third of his land.
2. Who are the characters in this excerpt? What is their relationship?
The characters are King Lear and his three daughters: Goneril, Regan and Cordelia.
3. What does King Lear give to his two elder daughters?
Reading
Whose actions are described?
King Lear and the three daughters’ actions.
What can you learn from these actions?
King Lear holds the power in this scene—he is seated like a judge, while his daughters stand, waiting to speak.
Read and answer the questions.
Reading
What do Goneril and Regan say to King Lear? How do their words make King Lear feel?
Read along with the recording, answer the questions.
Their words make King Lear feel happy and pleased, so he immediately gives them land.
Reading
What does Cordelia say? Are her words different from what her sisters say?
Goneril and Regan use big, fancy words to make their love sound huge. Cordelia’s words are short and plain.
Why do you think Cordelia chooses to say like this?
Because she thinks real love should be shown through actions, not pretty words.
Reading
Read along with the recording, answer the questions.
Discuss the following questions in groups.
1. Compare the three daughters’ words. Whose words do you trust the most? Why? Use examples from the excerpt.
I trust Cordelia’s words the most. Goneril says her love makes “speech unable”, yet she keeps speaking. Regan says all other joys are her “enemy”, which sounds too extreme. Their words feel like a show to win land. Cordelia, however, says simply that she loves her father “according to [her] duty, no more nor less”. Her words are plain and honest. She does not try to make her love sound bigger than it is.
Reading
2. What kind of person do you think King Lear is in this scene? Find clues from his words and the stage directions.
In this scene, King Lear seems proud and foolish. The stage direction “[King Lear sits in his seat.]” shows he puts himself above others like a judge. He asks his daughters to compete for his love and gives away land based on their words, not their true feelings. He cannot tell who is honest and who is not. This makes him easy to fool.
Reading
One key difference is how the two forms reveal a character’s inner world.
In a novel, the writer can directly tell us what a character thinks or feels. For example, if this scene were a novel, it might say: “Cordelia’s heart ached. She loved her father too deeply to turn love into a performance.” We would immediately know her true feelings.
In a play, however, the story is told through dialogue and actions. We are not told what Cordelia thinks; we can only judge her by what she says (“Nothing, my lord.”) and what she does not say. The stage directions in this excerpt only show us where characters sit or stand, never how they feel. This means the audience or reader must work harder to understand the characters.
What are the differences between a play and novel? Give one example.

Discuss with group members about the following questions.
In Part A, we read an excerpt from King Lear. Think about the three qualities of good literature we just heard. Does King Lear have any of these qualities? Which ones?
Yes, it does. King Lear describes feelings that are common to everyone—the love between a father and his daughters, the pain of being misunderstood, and the conflict between honesty and flattery. People from different cultures and times can all connect with these feelings. Also, Shakespeare uses language as a powerful tool. The different speaking styles of the three sisters—Goneril’s exaggeration, Regan’s competition, Cordelia’s plainness—show their characters through language alone.

(1) How does Julie feel about her new school? How do you know that?
She feels sad and lonely. She says, “I don’t like my new school. I haven’t made any friends yet. I haven’t met anyone who likes me. I miss my old school and my old friends.”
Writing
(2) In the next scene, Emily will talk with Julie. Based on what you know about Julie so far, how do you think she will act when Emily tries to be friendly? Why?
Julie will probably be shy and quiet at first. She might not say much or even try to end the conversation quickly because she is still feeling nervous and unsure of herself. But if Emily is friendly and patient—for example, if she shares something about her own experience—Julie might slowly open up a little.

Post-reading
Did the writer describe the scene where Behrman was painting the leaf in detail? Why or why not?
No, the writer did not describe it in detail. There are at least three reasons:
Think and answer.
To create a surprise ending. If readers knew the truth earlier, the ending would lose its power to shock and move us.
Post-reading
To make Behrman’s sacrifice more touching. Behrman did not paint the leaf to be praised or remembered. The fact that nobody saw him makes his act purer and more selfless.
Post-reading
To let readers share Johnsy’s experience. Throughout the story, readers, like Johnsy, believe the leaf is real. When the truth is finally revealed, we feel the same shock and gratitude that Johnsy must have felt.
Post-reading
Johnsy:
At first, she is week, pessimistic and gives up hope easily. She believes she will die when the last leaf falls. But later, she realizes she was wrong and decides to live.
Further thinking
1. What are the personalities of the thre characters in the story?
Post-reading
She is caring, loyal and strong. She takes good care of her sick friend, tries to cheer her up, and never gives up on her.
Sue:

Behrman:
Post-reading
Further thinking
2. What was Behrman’s dream? Do you think his dream came true?
Behrman’s dream was to paint a masterpiece. I think his dream came true. The leaf he painted was so true to life that Johnsy didn’t realize it was a picture. More importantly, it was more than just a painting—it gave Johnsy hope and saved her life. That is what makes it a true masterpiece.
Post-reading
Further thinking
3. What impressed you most in the story? Why?
Version 1:
What impressed me most is the surprise ending. Throughout the story, I thought the last leaf was real. Only at the end did I find out that it was painted by Behrman. This twist made me want to read the story again and look for clues I had missed.
Post-reading
Version 2:
What impressed me most is the power of hope. A simple painted leaf gave Johnsy the will to live again, It makes me realize that sometimes even the smallest thing can change a person’s life completely.
Post-reading
Discuss and share
In the story, hope comes from a painted leaf. In real life, when people are sick or going through hard times, where can hope come from? Think of one specific example from real life or from the news.
Post-reading
Hope can also come from something a person loves. I heard about a cancer patient who loved painting. During her treatment, she painted every day, even when she was very weak. She said that painting gave her something to look forward to each morning. Like the painted leaf in the story, her paintings reminded her that there was still beauty and hope in life.

Discuss
I think a common challenge is understanding the theme of a story. Many readers can follow the plot and remember the characters, but they may not know what the writer really wants to say. The story seems easy to read, but the deeper meaning is not always clear. It often takes time and discussion with others to understand it better.
What challenges do you think are common when reading works of literature? Describe one.
Thank you!
