Jiang Xingyu became the youngest chief engineer at a wellknown energy company in Yunnan. He was born in Chuxiong, a small city with strong winds and beautiful mountains. As a child, Jiang was always interested in making small models with his hands. He enjoyed making simple windmills from paper and old fans, and liked to watch them spin when the wind blew. His parents encouraged his hobby and bought him science books, so he learned more about how wind could be used to make electricity.
At university, Jiang studied physics and joined many science clubs. He worked very hard and never stopped asking questions. His dream was to invent something useful for his hometown and for China. After years of hard work, Jiang led a team of young engineers to invent a smart windmill. This windmill could turn itself towards the wind and start or stop working by itself, saving more energy than traditional ones. After making this smart windmill, Jiang's team won a national innovation prize for their invention.
Now, as a successful engineer, Jiang wants to give back to society. He has helped build new windmills in many parts of Yunnan, providing clean energy for thousands of people. In 2025, he planed to visit local schools to teach students about science and environmental protection. Jiang believes that young people in Yunnan can become great inventors too if they are curious and work hard. He hopes his story will inspire more students to love science and protect the environment.

Young heroes protecting our planet
Although there are laws to protect our environment,we still face many challenges, such as climate change, plastic pollution, and desertification(沙漠化). But across China, young people are stepping up to find solutions. They are choosing unexpected paths, using new ideas to protect nature. They have made great efforts, showing that everyone can make a difference. Here are two of their stories.
Zhong Lin was born in Minqin county, Gansu province. He grew up seeing his hometown fighting desertification. After graduation in 2021, Zhong returned to his hometown to start a treeplanting business. His choice came with challenges. “There was a strong need for money,” Zhong said. “My parents didn't understand, and my friends thought I was ‘being foolish'.” The work itself is hard too. After a sandstorm in March this year, only a few dozen of the 500 newly planted trees survived.
But Zhong never gave up. His big moment came in 2024. He joined a popular TV show—Become a Farmer, planting trees with famous people. It quickly drew attention.
Since then, “Minqin Tree Planting” has become popular and attracted many young volunteers.
“Thinking only gives me problems, but doing brings answers,” he said.
Li Yanyan, a 20yearold at Beijing Forestry University, is also a doer.
Last September, Li discovered that the glass buildings on campus harmed birds. She quickly gathered information and asked school leaders for help. Soon, special stickers(贴纸)were placed on dangerous windows. Her efforts have also inspired similar actions at other universities, including Peking University and Sun Yatsen University in Guangdong.
“Humans and wildlife breathe the same air—so protecting nature is not a choice but a survival skill we all need to learn,” said Li.

It was a Saturday morning. I was driving my nineyearold daughter Emma to her swimming lesson. Recently, Emma started 11.______(see)me as a true hero who could solve any problem. “You always know what's right, Dad,” she would say. We were talking about her class when I noticed a crowd ahead and had to slow down.
People stood on the street, pointing and laughing. In the middle was a large brown and white cow. It looked completely lost and afraid. People were making fun of the poor animal. Some kids shouted nearby and they seemed 12.________(scare)the animal even more. A strong feeling of anger rose, “How could they treat it in 13.____ a cruel way?”
“Dad, that cow is scared,” Emma said nervously. “What would you do?” She 14.________(believe)I would do the right thing. “Well, I would calm it down and help it find its way home.” I said, trying to sound 15._________(confidence). I explained I knew cows well: I grew up on a farm and now worked at a beef processing(加工)factory. I was sure 16.__(I)experience would make Emma feel at ease. After dropping Emma off, I turned my car 17.______—I felt it was my duty to help.
When I returned, the situation was worse. The cow was 18._______(run)in all directions, making a mess on the street. I walked towards it and spoke in a gentle voice. However, instead of calming down, it stared at me unkindly and let out a loud sound. My confidence 19._____(fade), replaced by sudden fear. This wasn't going to be easy at all. But I didn't give up until I attached it to a tree.
Later, an officer joked about sending it to my factory 20.___ I suggested finding something safe for it to stay—a local farm. When I told Emma about the cow, she looked very proud. I learned that a true hero chooses kindness when it matters.
