From the moon to Mars, scientists have been looking for water—the key to life—in the solar system for many years. Recently, they have turned to Jupiter!Jupiter is a gas giant(巨行星). It doesn't have an Earthlike surface. We can see strips(条纹)around it. They are actually cold, windy clouds.
On 14 April, the European Space Agency's(ESA)JUICE spacecraft successfully lifted off from French Guiana in South America. JUICE, short for “Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer”, will collect data(数据)from Jupiter and its three moons, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
The three moons are believed to have big oceans of liquid water(液态水)under their icy shells(壳). According to ESA, the water on those moons could be six times as much as the amount in Earth's oceans. The mission “will change our understanding of the solar system”, wrote Scientific American.
In 1998, NASA's Galileo spacecraft found that Europa might be ejecting(喷射)water as far as 160 kilometres into space. That gave scientists the idea of studying the icy moons of Jupiter.
The oceans under these moons are likely to be tens of kilometres deep. But they are also trapped under tens of kilometres of ice, making it very difficult to study them. Although JUICE cannot land on the surface, it has lots of hightech equipment to study the moon's environment, including spectral imaging(光谱成像)tools and radar(雷达). They could give more data on things like the thickness of the oceans, their salt content(含量), and their distance from the icy shells above, reported Phys.org.
“The main goal is to understand whether there are habitable(可居住的)environments among those icy moons and around a giant planet like Jupiter,” JUICE team member Olivier Witasse said during a press conference(发布会)on 6 April.

Earth's nearest neighbour—the moon
The moon is a satellite of our planet Earth, one quarter of its size, and circles us once every 27.3 days. Many planets have smaller bodies moving around them. As the moon circles our planet, it gets lit up by sunlight. When it is nearer the sun, most of the side the sun shines on cannot be seen from Earth, so we see a crescent(新月). When it is far from the sun, we see the full moon.
No one knows for sure how the moon was created. The most popular theory says it is the result of a crash(撞击)between a body as big as the planet Mars and Earth, which happened 4.6 billion years ago, about 3050 million years after the formation(形成)of the solar system.
The moon has influenced Earth and the people that live here for thousands of years.
Although it only produces about 1/6 of the gravity of Earth, the moon's gravity is still strong enough to attract the waters of our seas from around 250,000 miles distance—the moon is what makes our ocean's tides(潮汐).
People for thousands of years have formed theories that the moon has an effect on people and their lives. Cave paintings dating back 15,000 years show primitive(原始的)man understood the moon's phases(位相). And Ancient Greeks thought that the moon could cause madness in persons. Even now the moon attracts artists, filmmakers and musicians, and the moon features in many films, songs, literature and artworks.
