Many families live busy lives. Every week, the children have homework, sports, music lessons and club activities. The parents are busy too. They work, do the housework, cook meals and drive their children to take part in activities. Some families do not have time to eat meals together more than once a week. Our community (社区) decided that it was time to take a break.
After three weeks of planning, we took one night off. We called it the “family night”. It was a night for families to spend time together. Sports teams stopped their practices, and teachers did not give homework.
On the “family night”, we decided to turn off our televisions. “We also decided not to answer the phone,” answering machines said. “Please call back tomorrow.” Many families ordered hamburgers and other food from stores or restaurants so that they wouldn’t need to spend time cooking.
There were lots of activities. Storytelling and card games were the most popular. These activities gave families the chance to spend time together. Children and parents weren’t so busy, and children didn’t spend so much time playing computer games or watching TV. On the “family night”, families relaxed and spent the evening together. We hope to have more “family nights”.

Many parents think that it’s very difficult to get their children to do chores. But I don’t think it is difficult.
My daughter Ann is ten years old. At night, I make her a chore list for the following days. Then I stick (粘) the list on her door. Usually she gets three to eight chores a day. It depends on how well she does chores. If she does all of her chores well, she can get some pocket money (零用钱) from her parents the next day. The chores are some easy ones, such as sweeping the floor, folding the clothes and cleaning the table after dinner.
For my other two children, the chores are easier because they are very young. My elder son knows how to put empty dinner plates in the dishwasher. Every Sunday, my mother would buy a lot of food and bring it to my grandma’s house. We would wait for more family members to come before eating together at the table, my grandma’s dinner table. One of my least favourite chores is cleaning my bedroom, but I have to do it. If my bedroom is untidy, I find it hard to relax and impossible to do any work! My mum always says, “A tidy home means a tidy mind.” I think this is true. If everything is a mess, you just can’t think clearly.
Studies show that people are usually more successful if they work, study, or live in a clean and tidy environment. A study shows that many children with bad behaviour (行为) come from messy houses. Children who grow up in dirty houses would probably be unhealthy and they fall sick more often too. This is why people with tidier homes are often healthier and more successful. My mum is a good example of this. She makes sure our home is always very clean and comfortable, so my sister and I hardly ever fall sick. Everyone loves her and she is very successful in her job in a bank. I am not a naturally tidy person; I sometimes throw my clothes on the floor because I am too tired to put them away, and I often leave rubbish on my desk. It is not easy to keep things clean all the time, but I am trying to develop the habit of tidying up every day. Maybe one day I will be as tidy and successful as my mum! That’s my wish too.

Do you find it hard to motivate (激励) yourself to clean the house? Me too! Cleaning the house is really one of those jobs that never end. But I find some nice ways to get motivated to do the housework.
One of the good ways is to have less (更少) so that there will be less to keep clean and tidy. Every few months, I throw away some things that I don’t need or use. The house looks much tidier.
Cleaning the whole (全部的) house in one go (一口气) can be really difficult, so I make a plan to do a little each day. As a result, when the weekend comes, I finish cleaning almost everything and I don’t need to spend the whole weekend doing the housework.
When I have a lot of housework to do, I’ ll always start with the easiest thing. I ask myself which one is going to be the quickest to finish. And that’s the thing that I will start with. In this way, I feel that doing the housework becomes much easier for me.
I like to listen to music while doing the housework, I sometimes like to sing and dance while doing the housework. And the housework is done before I know it I feel relaxed at the same time.

“How was school, Jennifer?” asked her mom.
“It was great, Mom. Labor Day (劳动节) is coming. I am excited that I will have no school next Monday!”
Jennifer was woken up early on Labor Day morning by her dad. He said that in honor of (纪念) Labor Day, the family planned to do some cleaning. Jennifer couldn’t believe it. She began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.
“Jennifer, your breakfast is ready. We have many things to do today. Let’s get a move on,” said Jennifer’s mom. Jennifer asked her parents, “Are you serious about working today? Isn’t Labor Day a holiday?”
“Yes, Jennifer, it is,” replied her dad. “But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you realize why people celebrated Labor Day in the beginning.”
Jennifer disliked the plan, but she had no choice. First, she was asked to wash the breakfast dishes. After that, her dad told her to give their dog a bath. It was a hard task, which needed a lot of careful work. She began the work unhappily.

Students don’t just listen to the teachers in the classroom. My 19-month-old little son helps me put the dirty clothes in the washing machine when I am doing the washing. They can also help me when I’m working in the yard. They both help me pick up the sticks and throw them away. 1.Where does the writer stick the chore list? 2.How many chores does Ann usually get each day? 3.What chores does Ann usually do? 4.What can Ann get the next day if she does well? 5.What do you think about doing chores? My family has always had family dinners, as far as I can remember. When I was a little boy, my mother began to ask us to attend (出席) family dinners at least once a week. Every Sunday, my mother would buy a lot of food and bring it to my grandma’s house. We would wait for more family members to come before eating together at the table, my grandma’s dinner table. In the past, I felt that was a silly tradition (愚蠢的传统). However, I find it’s fantastic to get together as a family now. For me, dinner is not just a meal, but a good chance to talk and play with family members. We can talk about everything after a long week of school and work. Every time I sit at the dinner table, my grandma’s dinner table, I look around and find so many people who truly love me. It makes me feel so happy. Finally, I understand the true meaning of this tradition. It’s not about the dinners or activities. It’s about family members who care about each other. All the memories (记忆) around my grandma’s dinner table will last forever. Now, I’m always expecting Sunday to arrive. 1.How often do the writer’s family members attend family dinners? 2.What did the writer think of the family dinner in the past? 3.What does the writer think of the family dinner now? 4.What’s the true meaning of this tradition? 5.Do you like family dinners? Why? 1.What does the mother think a tidy home means? 2.What kind of environment makes the writer and his sister healthy? 3.What kind of person does the writer wish to be? 4.Is your bedroom tidy or messy? What do you plan to do from now on? 1.How many ways to make housework easy are mentioned (被提到)? 2.What things can you throw away to make housework less? 3.What does the writer think of doing all the chores in one go? 4.What does the writer like to do while doing the housework? (写出一个答案即可) 5.What housework do you often do at home? Why do teenagers need to do housework? 重难语篇练习 请阅读下面的非连续性文本,根据语篇内容回答问题。 What makes a home in Shanxi special? I am excited that I will have no school next Monday!” Jennifer was woken up early on Labor Day morning by her dad. Isn’t Labor Day a holiday?” “Yes, Jennifer, it is,” replied her dad. “But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you realize why people celebrated Labor Day in the beginning.” Jennifer disliked the plan, but she had no choice.
