M:The White House is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. You can’t say you’ve been to Washington, D.C.if you haven’t seen the White House. Not every American president lives there.Though the Executive Mansion was begun in 1792 under the direction of George Washington, the structure was not completed until 1800, so ironically Washington never called it home. The White House is open to the public on weekdays from 10 am until noon. The building was torched by British troops in 1814, during the War of 1812, and the structural damage caused by the fire was repaired, but the sandstone walls outside were still black from the fire. The walls were then painted white, giving birth to the name the building now goes by.An act of Congress made it the official name in 1920.Every President has left his mark upon the White House, with Thomas Jefferson adding grass to the east and west wings, Andrew Jackson installing running water, and Harry Truman adding a porch.Bill Clinton’s addition to the White House was an indoor track.

A new study published in JAMA shows that teenagers who use social media heavily tend to perform worse in reading, vocabulary and memory tests compared to those who use little or no social media.
Researchers followed over 6, 000 teenagers aged 15 to 19 for several years, tracking their social media habits and cognitive development. They found that about 58% of students used little or no social media, while 37% gradually increased to about one hour daily by age 16. The remaining 6% spent three or more hours daily on social media by the same age.
All groups took regular tests measuring reading, vocabulary and memory skills. Results showed that even light social media users scored 1-2 points lower than non-users, while heavy users scored 4-5 points lower. “This shows a clear dosage effect — higher use leads to poorer performance,” said Dr. Jason Nagata, who has devoted to the research for 3 years.
In a recent study, Prinstein and his colleagues found that teens who are heavy social media users have brains that are more used to life on social media, with its “rapid, constant feedback”.“What we’re finding is that kids become overly sensitive to the kinds of likes, comments, feedback and rewards they might get from peers,” says Prinstein.
“Those findings help explain the results of the new studies,” he adds. “It makes perfect sense that if their brain is growing to be better suited for social media activities, it might not be well prepared for other things they need to do, like what we saw in the study.” The new study also gives us strong evidence that the government really needs to create some clear policies, such as setting age limits on social media apps.
As many schools are considering banning phones during school hours, this study provides important new findings. This study offers valuable insights for educators and parents, highlighting the urgent need to address this issue through reasonable time management and policy guidance.

A.Heavy use for over 5 hours shows the worst effects.
B.Its main impact is on reading, not vocabulary skills.
C.Light use has no meaningful impact on test scores.
D.The negative effects grow with increased usage time.
解析:D 推理判断题。 根据第三段中的Results showed that even light social media ...4-5 points lower.可知,重度使用者的表现明显差于轻度使用者,这说明社交媒体对认知能力的负面影响会随着使用时间的增加而加重。

If you analyze people’s actions, you will come to the conclusion that they all seek happiness.Every act is in fact a search for it, even if on the surface it doesn’t look so.Happiness is always the main target.
Going to the movies, eating in a restaurant and going to a party are all motivated by the desire to be happy.Who does not dream of a vacation in some fascinating locations, a new car, a new house, or the ideal match? All people daydream, and some even try to make their dream a reality. And why is that? In order to be happy!
Many people endanger themselves by climbing steep mountains, entering unexplored caves, or diving into the deep of the ocean in order to enjoy the few moments of happiness.A thief may steal because he loves the thrill of danger, or because he desires to have quick money to spend. He is actually looking for happiness, though in a perverted way.
Of course, not all actions end in happiness. The motive is happiness, but the results do not always bring the desire.According to some spiritual traditions, we are spiritual beings in physical bodies. The spiritual part is always happy.Rather, it is happiness itself. But the physical body covers this happiness essence (本质).There is a constant desire to find out this happiness. This is the reason why happiness is constantly sought.
However, there is no need to search for happiness or to create it, or to have all kinds of outer experiences and actions in order to feel it.On the contrary, everything has to be dropped in order to experience it.Every technique, which helps to relax the mind and calm the rush of thoughts will lead to happiness.

34.According to the author, why do people seek happiness all the time?( )
A.All actions don’t result in the expected happiness.
B.One’s physical body is controlled by his spiritual part.
C.There is little awareness of the nature of happiness.
D.People are so greedy that it’s hard to satisfy their desires.
解析:C 细节理解题。根据第四段中的According to some ...constantly sought.

One afternoon, Nathan set up a stand (摊位) as usual, selling phone cases. A 10-year-old girl named Michele stopped by and bought one for her mom. As they talked, Nathan shared his dream of having a 3D printer. “With that printer, I can print anything in any form,” Nathan said.
“Anything in any form?” Michele’s eyes lit up with sudden excitement. “Once you get it, could you please make a leg for my pet duck Tim? Because he was missing one,” Michele said hopefully. “That’s a cool project,” Nathan replied. He thought for a minute. “I’ll make him one, but it won’t be ready now. I have to save up some of the money myself to buy the 3D printer.” “How lucky Tim is! You are so kind!” Michele said happily, unable to contain her excitement.
Before leaving, Michele exchanged phone numbers with Nathan. They discovered that they lived in the same neighborhood, which meant Nathan could easily get close to the duck and measure the size of its leg in person to ensure that a suitable prosthetic leg could be made. He promised to reach out as soon as he could afford a printer.
That evening, Nathan told his family about Michele and his promise. His parents praised his kindness and initiative. They agreed to offer some financial support to buy the printer but also emphasized the importance of his own effort. “We’re proud you’re earning this yourself, Nathan,” his father said. “Saving your share shows real commitment.” Nathan nodded firmly, feeling more determined than ever.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式作答。
Nathan worked very hard for the 3D printer.
However, creating the leg model was not easy.
参考范文:
Nathan worked very hard for the 3D printer.Every morning, he set up his stand early. Even on rainy days, he went door-to-door to show phone case samples to potential customers. After weeks of effort and with his parents’ support, Nathan finally had enough money. He rushed to buy a 3D printer and then called Michele at once. Receiving his call, Michele was overjoyed and invited Nathan over that weekend. As agreed, Nathan went to Michele’s home with the 3D printer and some measuring tools.
However, creating the leg model was not easy. The first design was too large, making Tim walk awkwardly. Nathan measured Tim’s remaining leg again and adjusted the 3D model. The second try fit better, but Tim still seemed uncomfortable. With great patience, Nathan finally managed to make a suitable 3D-printed leg on the third attempt. Cautiously, he attached it to Tim. This time, Tim could walk almost normally! Michele burst into cheers, while Nathan smiled, knowing his printer had already started making magic.
