Offering help is an important quality in our daily lives. It requires no special skills or great effort, but small acts of kindness can greatly benefit people in need. Such positive behavior warms others’ hearts and helps build a more harmonious community.
Last Friday, our class took part in a voluntary service activity. With our teacher’s guidance, we went to clean and beautify the nearby community garden. The garden was in a terrible mess, covered with fallen leaves and rubbish. My classmates and I divided tasks clearly. Some picked up litter, some watered young saplings, and others cleared overgrown weeds. Although the work was tiring and dirty, nobody complained or gave up halfway.
An elderly neighbor watched our work and praised us sincerely. She said our voluntary work greatly refreshed the dull and messy garden. After hours of hard work, the garden finally took on a clean and lively new look.
This activity brought me a meaningful lesson. Many people think helping others is a burden, but it is not true. Helping others not only brings warmth to people around us, but also gives us a strong sense of satisfaction and pride. Small kindness matters a lot. It shapes our personalities and fills our society with positive energy.
34. What does the underlined word “refreshed” mean?
A.使陈旧 B.使焕然一新 C.使空旷

C. They chatted with elderly neighbors.
36. What can we know from the passage?
A. Students must take part in voluntary activities.
B. Small kind acts can bring warmth and self-satisfaction.
C. Helping others always makes people tired and upset.
37. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. An Unforgettable Garden
B. A Beautiful Community Garden
C. The True Value of Helping Out

Have you ever visited Yunnan Province? If yes, you must go to the Stone Forest. It is only 78 kilometres from Kunming, the capital of Yunnan. The Stone Forest has the most famous karst landform in the world. The rocks look like lions, birds, and trees. People call it the “Stone Forest Museum” because you can see everything in one place. Many visitors also come here to learn about Yi ethnic culture.
The Stone Forest is very big — about 1,100 square kilometres. It has eight parts. The best part is the Stone Forest Scenic Area. You can see the Major Stone Forest, Minor Stone Forest, Bushao Hill, Lizi Yuanqing, and Eternal Mushroom there. Do not miss them!
How did the stones get these strange shapes? Scientists say it took 270 million years. Sedimentation, pressure, uplift, and erosion made them. Time and nature worked together to make this beautiful place.
You can visit the Stone Forest any time of year. But March to October is the best time. Most Yi festivals are in these months. You can also see many colourful flowers then. The weather is nice all year. It is not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter.
On 6 October 2022, the Stone Forest joined the Top 100 World Geological Heritage Sites. This shows it is important to China and the world.
38. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By asking questions.
B. By listing numbers.
C. By quoting famous sayings.
39. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The best scenic spots to visit.
B. The history of the Stone Forest.
C. The size and parts of the Stone Forest.
40. Why does the writer suggest visiting from March to October?
A. Because the ticket prices are lower then.
B. Because there are fewer tourists during this time.
C. Because visitors can enjoy festivals and flowers.
41. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To explain how scientists study karst landforms.
B. To introduce the Stone Forest and encourage people to visit it.
C. To compare the Stone Forest with other world heritage sites.
第五部分 任务型阅读(共4小题;第42题1分,第43、44题每题2分,第45小题3分,共8分)阅读短文,根据短文内容完成下列各题。
If someone says “give me five” to you, don’t look for five yuan in your pocket! The person is not asking for your money — they want your hand.
In the US, “give me five” or “give me a high five” is very popular, especially among young people. You can often see it in films or on TV. It means two people slap (掌击) each other’s raised right hands together. This simple action only takes a second, but it can make people feel happy and excited.
People usually do this when they celebrate something good. For example, if a football team wins a game, the players will give high fives to everyone around them to celebrate. Students often give high fives after passing a difficult exam. Even friends may do it when they meet again after a long time.
This interesting gesture may come from an old Roman custom. In ancient Rome, people raised their right arm to show the king that they had nothing dangerous in their hand. This meant it was safe for the king to meet them. Over time, this serious action slowly became a friendly and happy gesture among common people. Today, some people also give a high five to new friends to show they are friendly and open.
Well, why not try “give me five” with your friends? ▲ .
