The world felt greatly sad about the loss of a legendary (传奇的) scientist, Dr. Jane Goodall. On October 1, 2025, the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and a United Nations Messenger of Peace passed away peacefully in California, at the age of 91.
Born in London in 1934, Jane Goodall spent her whole life studying chimpanzees (黑猩猩) in Africa. In 1960, she traveled to Tanzania to observe chimpanzees’ behavior. In the jungles of Gombe, with her amazing patience and sharp ability to notice things, she bridged the gap (隔阂) between humans and animals. She named chimpanzees, such as Fifi, Flo, and David Greybeard, rather than numbering them. At that time, this was regarded as an unscientific way. Her scientific discoveries shocked the world. She found that chimpanzees use tools to catch insects, eat meat, and even show feelings similar to those of humans. These findings changed how people understood animals and nature. Her research showed that humans are not the only species able to use tools, which renewed biology textbooks worldwide.
Beyond science, she became a person who worked hard to protect the environment. In 1977, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute to save wildlife habitats (栖息地) and educate people about nature. Her Roots & Shoots program inspires young people in over 120 countries to protect animals and the planet.
The United Nations honored her as a Messenger of Peace in 2002 for her lifelong efforts. Even at 90, she traveled 300 days a year to speak about climate change and animal protection. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “Jane Goodall’s work teaches us to care for all living beings. Her legacy (遗产) will live forever.”

C. She was required to do more work by the Jane Goodall Institute.
D. She wanted to get more rewards from the United Nations.

一、阅读单选
(来源:2026年辽宁省中考英语试题)
Saturday, June 6Sometimes I wonder if the English I’ve learned at school is of any use in real life in English-speaking countries. I finally sent an email to my friend Eric about my doubt. To my surprise, he replied with a few words and lots of photos—street signs, shop boards, and public notices—all from his city. “See if you can understand…” he wrote in his email. So this whole afternoon, I sat at the desk and went through these photos. The first sign reads “Thanks for standing in line while others exit. Keep it up!” From the words and the arrows (箭头), I could easily guess what “exit” means. It must mean “get out”. While others are getting out, we should wait in line. “Keep it up!” might mean “Keep doing it!”. It’s good manners. The second sign says “Dispose of or take your garbage with you. Leaving trash is a NO-GO!” It seemed difficult for me. “Garbage” and “trash” could mean something useless. But how about “Dispose of”? I looked it up in a dictionary. It says “to throw (something) away”. It’s our duty to put rubbish in a bin or take it away. So “Leaving trash is a NO-GO!” was not a problem for me. Everything made sense. Cool!“Neighborhood”, “watch” and “community” were not new to me, but I still failed to understand the last sign. Then I phoned my English teacher. She told me everyone in such a place worked together to keep the area safe.By guessing, using an English-English dictionary and asking for help, I got the meanings of all the photos. I can’t wait to try more.
1. What is the email to Eric mainly about?
A. School life. B. Foreign culture. C. True friendship. D. English learning.
2. Which of the following can take the place of “Leaving trash is a NO-GO!” in the text?
A. You can’t go away! B. You shouldn’t take a bin!
C. You can’t litter here! D. You shouldn’t leave soon!
3. How did the writer get the meaning of the last sign?
A. By calling a teacher. B. By making a guess.
C. By sending an email. D. By using a dictionary.
4. What is the writer most likely to do next?
A. Draw signs for the city. B. Ask Eric for more photos.
C. Make boards for shops. D. Thank neighbors for their help.
【答案】1. D 2. C 3. A 4. B
(1)题: 日记开头提到“Sometimes I wonder if the English I’ve learned at school is of any use in real life...I finally sent an email to my friend Eric about my doubt”,可知给Eric的邮件主要关于英语学习的疑问。
(2)题: 第三段提到“‘Garbage’ and ‘trash’ could mean something useless...It’s our duty to put rubbish in a bin or take it away”,可知“Leaving trash is a NO-GO!”意为“不能在这里扔垃圾”,与“You can’t litter here!”同义。
(3)题: 第四段提到“Then I phoned my English teacher. She told me everyone in such a place worked together to keep the area safe”,说明作者通过打电话请教老师理解了最后一个标识。
(4)题: 最后一段提到“I can’t wait to try more”,结合前文Eric发来标识照片帮助作者学习,可推测作者接下来会向Eric要更多照片。

A. School life. B. Foreign culture. C. True friendship. D. English learning.
