(2026·山西晋中榆次高二月考)They say that laughter is the best medicine and the effects of humour in medicine have long been studied. But what about the effects of humour on learning? This is the question that “Humour in Pedagogy: How Ha-Ha Can Lead to Aha!” by R. L. Garner attempts to answer. In the article, Garner details a study where he looked at the effects of humour on learning and discusses the benefits and risks of using comedy to teach.
In the study detailed in the article, 114 students watched a series of three 40-minute recorded lectures. The experimental group had humorous stories within their lectures, while these were removed from the control group's. Afterward, students were asked to rate the presentations and repeat them on their memory of the presented material.
The findings reveal that humour can be a powerful tool in the classroom. The experimental group held a significantly higher opinion of the lessons. They felt the information was conveyed more effectively and gave the teacher higher ratings. Moreover, they were notably better at remembering the lecture knowledge. This truly impresses upon us the significance of incorporating humour to create a positive learning mood, which can enhance students' enthusiasm and focus during the learning process.
However, using humour in teaching isn't without handicaps. What's considered humorous varies from person to person. Offensive humour can have a negative impact on students' learning. Excessive humour can also undermine the instructor's credibility (可信度) and lead to a loss of focus on instructional objectives. According to Garner, the humour needs to match three conditions to do the trick: it must be specific to the teaching content, aimed at improving learning, and suitable for the audience. It's essential for educators to be aware of both the advantages and disadvantages of using humour in teaching to make the most of it while avoiding potential risks and maximizing the educational effectiveness.

(2026·河南南阳二中高二月考)Dr. Wiseman started “the laugh lab” project in September. It is the largest study of humour. Participants are invited to log on to the laugh lab website, give a few personal details, tell their favourite jokes and judge the jokes told by other people.
The project will last for a year, and the organisers hope to finally discover the world's funniest joke. But there is also a serious purpose: to explore what people from various nations and cultures find amusing and to examine the differences in the sense of humour between men and women.
This is a subject that has long attracted psychologists and philosophers. Most of the time, people are not completely honest. We do things that society expects us to do and say things that help us get what we want. But laughing cannot be controlled. When we laugh, we tell the truth about ourselves. By December over 10,000 jokes had been submitted (递交). This gave the scientists enough evidence to reach early conclusions. It seems that men and women do have different senses of humour, for instance.
“Our findings show the major differences in the ways in which males and females use humour,” said Dr. Wiseman. “Males use humour to appear superior to others, while women are more skilled in languages and prefer wordplay.” Researchers also found that there really is such a thing as a national sense of humour. The British enjoy what is usually called “toilet humour”. But the French like their jokes short and sharp: “You're a high-priced lawyer. Will you answer two questions for $500?” “Yes. What's the second question?” The Germans are famous for not having a sense of humour. But the survey found that German participants were more likely to find submitted jokes funny than any other nationality. Perhaps that proves the point. “Is this joke funny? I don't know, but let's say yes, just to be safe.”
Dr. Wiseman and his workmates also submitted jokes created by computers. But none of those who took part in the survey found any of them amusing. Perhaps this is relief. It seems that computers can do everything. At least they should leave the funny stuff to us.

When I was two years old, my parents were still getting used to the lifestyle of raising a kid, but what they had noticed was what they considered “out of the ordinary” behavior. Whatever toys I played with, I placed them in a straight line. When others were unfriendly to me, I became changeable. My diagnosis (诊断) was in 1999, a time when a type of autism (孤独症) called PDD-NOS was still not commonly understood and was still being observed. My parents were initially shocked at this result.
As I got older, I began to develop from keeping to myself to interacting with other kids once I entered a public school in first grade. I noticed how the other kids were able to answer questions in class a lot faster than I could understand. Since fourth grade, I joined my school's marching band, something I never had any interest in, but my mom made me believe that it was a great way to not only make friends, but to help gain more confidence in myself.
At the same time during fourth grade, I discovered my talent for creative writing. I realized, on the day I wrote my first story about superheroes, my processed thinking and my imagination provided a basic feature for my character: a hidden talent. As the years passed, I helped my fellow classmates with articles, and I even shared the original pieces I wrote with my classmates occasionally, although I was still unaware of my diagnosis.
However, one day when I was fifteen years old, I learned the real truth about myself. My parents kept it from me because they thought it would affect my self-respect. I understood that they'd hide this from me because they really love me, and ever since then, I've accepted who I am, and I use my talents to help others who need a friend.
