Jane Austen (1775-1817) was a famous British writer. Last year, people around the world celebrated the 250th anniversary of her birth.
Austen grew up in a small village in England. She loved reading and writing from a young age. At that time, women were expected to marry rich men. They could not have control of their own money until 1870. They had no right to vote until 1918. But Austen did not follow this path. She never married and wrote six novels instead.
Her books talk about men and women’s roles, power, school and marriage from a woman’s point of view. In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet refuses to marry a man who she does not respect. In Emma, the main character makes mistakes when she tries to help her friends find love. These stories are not just about love stories. They ask serious questions: Should women marry for money? Can they choose their own future? The main characters in the stories are brave and independent. A Jane Austen expert said, “She writes about people’s problems. And those problems are still important today.”
Because her stories talk about timeless problems and ideas, Austen’s novels are still popular today. Film producers have made her novels into over 70 films and TV shows. Jane Austen has proved that the world you live in doesn’t limit you, but your choices do.

Reading Lu Xun’s works has become a shared experience for Chinese students. From a young age, we have studied his works, such as My Old Home and The True Story of Ah Q. We have also come to know Runtu and Kong Yiji through his writing. Lu Xun sharply (尖锐地) showed social problems, driving people to think and reflect. However, some students today argue that we should reduce the number of his works in textbooks.
They say they have been studying his works every term since Grade Six. Though he is a great writer, students often miss the deeper meaning of his words, and his ideas are always too critical (批判的). These readers worry that Lu Xun’s critical way of writing might influence how young people see the world, making them always see the bad side of things. They suggest that the textbook should include articles from the past to the present, while ensuring the content keeps up with the times. Zheng Yun, a student from Xiamen, said, “I really think the ideas and social background (背景) in Lu Xun’s article My Old Home have hardly anything to do with the lives of today’s teenagers.”
On the other hand, many students strongly support the idea that Lu Xun’s works are worth studying. They believe that a Chinese textbook should not only help students study Chinese but also provide them with challenging literature to read. Lu Xun’s works are just what the Chinese textbooks need, no matter how long ago they came out. More importantly, Lu Xun shows deep care for the future of China and its people in his writings. His works have shaped the thinking of young people for generations (一代代). As Ye Zibing, a student from Wuhan, said, “I am always spellbound (着迷的) when I read My Old Home. Some sentences in it, such as, ‘Actually, the earth had no roads to begin with, but when many people walk on it, a road appears,’ are so powerful that they remind us to be brave and move forward, creating our own way.”
Should We Include 41 Lu Xun’s Works in Textbooks?
YES!* Students find his works too deep and critical.
*His critical writing style could lead young readers to see the world too 42 .
* Textbooks should include articles from across time periods while ensuring the content keeps up with the times.
◇ Zheng Yun believes that the ideas and social background in My Old Home have 43 to the lives of today’s teenagers.
NO!*His works achieve the 44 of a Chinese textbook.
◇ Help students learn Chinese.
◇ Provide challenging literature.
* His writing shows great care for the future of China and its people.
* His works have shaped the thinking of young people for generations.
◇ As Ye Zibing said, a sentence from My Old Home reminds young people to have the 45 to move forward and create their own path.

With“和⋯⋯一起”、In“在⋯⋯里面”、Over“在⋯⋯上面”均无此搭配。
根据后文“they used abacuses (算盘) and rulers to solve problems”可知,算盘和尺子是计算工具,说明当时缺乏现代化的计算设备,computers“电脑”符合语境。
根据后文“he was awarded (授予) the Medal of the Republic”可知,他获得了国家最高荣誉,说明他一生取得了卓越的成就,achievements“成就”符合语境。
根据“the highest science and technology award”可知,此处表示获得奖项,receive an award“获得奖项”,received“收到、获得”符合语境。

My Inspiring Person
My inspiring person is Yuan Longping, a great scientist.
He devoted himself to hybrid rice research all his life. He spent years doing experiments patiently in the fields and finally made great achievements. His hard work helped solve food problems and fed lots of hungry people around the whole world.
I think he is truly inspiring because he is strong-willed. His story encourages me to stick to goals and face difficulties bravely. Whenever I meet all kinds of troubles in my daily study, I will learn from him and keep moving forward without giving up easily.
