(Text 1)
M:Jane, I’ve heard you plan to buy a new smartphone.
W:Yes, but I haven’t saved enough. The phone costs 680 dollars, but I have 550. My sister said she would help me.
(Text 2)
M:Shall we go to watch a football game this afternoon?
W:I can’t agree more. But I have to go to the grocery first to pick up some drinks and eggs for my mother.
(Text 3)
M:Madam, don’t panic. Could you tell me how the accident happened?
W:I was riding a bike along the side of the road when a car on the main road turned right and knocked me down off the bike. I didn’t see it until it hit me.
(Text 4)
W:With Teachers’ Day around the corner, I miss Mr Right. He treated us like his child.
M:Me too. I remember he took care of me when I was ill.
(Text 5)
M:Lisa wins first prize in the English competition.
W:Really? That’s wonderful. I’m so happy for her.
M:But I always feel disappointed. I have many problems with English learning.
(Text 6)
M:Carol, you look worried. Why?
W:Look at the screen.
M:What is happening?
W:Our flight to Sydney will be delayed for 3 hours, so now it won’t depart until 1 pm. But we have a meeting at night.
M:That shouldn’t be a problem. The meeting doesn’t begin until 8 o’clock in the evening. But we have another problem.
W:What is it?
M:We won’t have time to take a tour of the city. I have been looking forward to it for a long time.
W:What a pity! However, we can look around it next time.
(Text 7)
M:Mom, I want to move out.
W:It sounds great to me, kid. What kind of job did you find?
M:Job?
W:Yes, job. If you’re going to live on your own, you have to pay for the rent and everything else.
M:I thought I could just get you and Dad to pay for an apartment.
W:When you move out, your father and I aren’t paying your rent, young man. Get a job.
M:You’re right. If I’m going to live on my own, I have to be independent.
W:Well, the newspaper is over there.
(Text 8)
W:Would you like to go to the Grand Theatre with me?Here are two tickets for an opera there.
M:That’s great. Have you ever been to the Grand Theatre before?
W:No, but I heard it’s a famous and beautiful theatre.
M:Is it true that the opera is sung in a foreign language?
W:Yes, usually in Italian or French.
M:Not good for me. As you know, I can only speak English and a little German besides my mother tongue. I can hardly speak Italian and French.
W:It doesn’t matter. The actors also tell the story with their moves.
M:Sounds good, but I’m still afraid I can’t understand.
W:Take it easy. Music is a universal language.
M:Yes, the music is supposed to be beautiful.
(Text 9)
W:I am told that you took some kids to go camping last week, did you?
M:Yes, it lasted three days.
W:Did the children enjoy the holiday camp or were they homesick?
M:Well, I must admit some of the younger kids were a bit unhappy because they’d never been away from their home on their own before. But soon they recovered. At the end, they even didn’t want to go home.
W:What sorts of things did you do with them?
M:There were some trips, including a visit to Hardwick Hall. That was what we did on the first day. I think they expected it to be boring, especially when they heard that was a guided tour. But they were wrong, for the guide was interesting. His stories really made the history of the castle alive.
W:I can imagine it. By the way, what sorts of sports activities did you do?
M:A lot. Sailing, climbing, horse-riding and the like. On the last day we had a barbecue (户外烧烤), which was their favorite. The kids liked it very much. They all hoped to come again next year.
W:That sounds interesting and impressive.
(Text 10)
Welcome to Student Life! Today we’re going to talk about setting up a project of student jobs in your school. Having students do different jobs around the school is a great way to prepare them for life in the real world. It encourages them to be responsible and also helps them learn new tasks and gain experience.
However, it’s important to get students excited about the project, so the first thing you should do is let students know this project. Get the headmaster to make an announcement explaining the project. OK?
Then decide on the jobs you want and write out the descriptions of the skills and responsibilities needed for each position. Some typical jobs are Classroom Assistants, Recycling Officers and Computer Assistants. Next, ask students to apply for the jobs. Students should be encouraged to write letters of application for the job they are interested in. This is a great way to practice letter writing skills. And don’t forget you should make sure students are guided by a teacher. A committee then reviews all the applications and gives jobs to the most suitable applicants. Finally, it’s important to get opinions from students about the project, and to find out which jobs are successful and which don’t go well.

(2026·江西抚州期末)Sixteen-year-old Tom Smith from the UK has been blind since childhood, yet he has created a miracle with his ears.By listening to the sounds of forests, coasts, and fields, he has become the country’s youngest professional nature sound recorder, mapping the world in his mind through sound.
Tom’s training began in his own backyard.Every day, he recorded changes in birdsong and learned to distinguish the subtle differences in the wind rustling through leaves.Gradually, he became able to identify over 200 bird species by sound alone, and even “hear” shifts in weather and the turning of seasons.“When you close your eyes, the world actually becomes clearer,” he says.“Every sound is like a window, telling me stories of nature.”
To capture the purest audio, Tom often sets out before dawn, waiting quietly in the chilly, damp morning light. His ears can filter out wind noise, determine direction, and even sense the movement of distant animals.Last winter, his audio collection Dawn Chorus was adopted by a nature conservation organization.A rare recording of a nightingale’s (夜莺) courtship song within it helped scientists identify a new habitat for the species, providing crucial insights for ecological protection.
Today, Tom teaches listening skills online every week, guiding more people to experience the often-ignored world of sound.“We are always in a hurry to see with our eyes, but we forget that sound is nature’s most direct whisper,” he shares.“Silence is not the absence of sound, but a layered resonance.” His story proves that when one door closes, another opens.True discovery lies not in how far you go, but in how deeply you listen — everyone can use their ears to rediscover an overlooked, yet vividly alive world.

(2026·宁夏银川一中期末)A single Antarctic krill (南极磷虾) is about the size of your finger. But with a population of more than 700 trillion in the Southern Ocean, the tiny animal’s impact across the entire planet is enormous.
They’re food by the millions for seals, penguins and whales. And they keep large amounts of carbon trapped — more than $15 billion worth per year, according to a research team, led by Savoca, an ecologist at Stanford University.Researchers found that Antarctic krill store similar amounts of carbon to coastal seagrass, which scientists regard as one of the Earth’s most effective carbon sinks (碳汇).
Krill feed on phytoplankton (浮游植物), which, like land-based plants, consume carbon dioxide and release oxygen as they photosynthesize (进行光合作用).When krill waste sinks to the bottom of the ocean, all that carbon goes with it, trapping it and freeing up space at the ocean’s surface so more carbon can be absorbed from the air.
Increasingly, though, Antarctic krill face danger from warming seas and a growing fishery.Scientists say that without international action to strengthen oceanic protected areas and combat climate change, krill populations could drop off sharply in the coming ten years.
Researchers also found that an increase in plastic pollution in the Southern Ocean could reduce krill’s ability by 27 percent.“You only have to look as far as our own country for the story of eagles to show you how quickly something can go from being unbelievably numerous to extinct,” they said.
“We’re still trying to understand exactly how climate change will affect Antarctic krill and our research is in its early stages. There are lots of other things we need to consider,” another researcher Sylvester says.“It’s just the start. But we believe we’ll make a breakthrough and our efforts will bear fruit.”

(2026·广东阳江三中期中)Recent research has shown remarkable conservation (保护) outcomes from community-based management (CBM) in the Amazon.Rather than relying only on government agencies, local people take responsibility for protecting fisheries and lakes.Their work has expanded protection far beyond the lakes, covering forests and upland areas important for many species.
In Amazonas alone, about 15 million hectares of forest have thus been protected. The costs are low, but the benefits are great: Fish numbers have gone up again, and animals such as giant otters, manatees, and Amazon river turtles have also increased. These achievements highlight the special strengths of local people.Permanently present in these landscapes, they have the strongest interest and ability to keep resources safe, becoming the “unsung heroes” of conservation. The model also shows a good mix of scientific knowledge and traditional practice: while protecting biodiversity (生物多样性), it also increases family income through sustainable harvests.
However, there are challenges. At present, all the costs are dealt with by the volunteer watch groups themselves.Depending only on unpaid work cannot last long.To solve this, systems such as Payments for Environmental Services (PES) should be used so that communities can be properly paid.
The researchers urge greater recognition and financial support from governments and civil society.Supporting community-based conservation is not only an ecological necessity but also a matter of social justice (公平).By empowering those already engaged in frontline conservation, society can safeguard biodiversity, strengthen local economies, and ensure a better future for the next generations.

Caroline’s dad died of a heart attack in 2017, at the age of 57.When she was young, it was her dad who taught her to do a lot of things in her daily life. She often missed him and felt lonely from the bottom of her heart. However, the appearance of a man like her dad changed her and her life. She would never forget the day when the man, a total stranger, helped her out of trouble.
It happened in the summer of 2024.Caroline and her partner were doing a DIY home project that required 1,500 pounds of gravel (砾石).So Caroline headed to a home improvement store, and started filling up her car with 50-pound bags.
When she was loading and loading, with her body wet with sweat, an older man, who was driving a truck, noticed her and came over.He said, “Hey, girl! Do you know that your car has a weight limit?” Hearing that, Caroline first sensed a wave of surprise, then panic. She did not know that.Since her dad died, no one had taught her that.It had never even occurred to her that she could damage her car with a heavy load.
“I’m doing a DIY home project,” she said in a low voice.“I didn’t learn that from my dad.” Caroline started to feel at a loss. How was she going to unload the gravel from her car and bring it back to the store? And then how would she transport all the gravel she needed back home for her project?
Caroline wanted to cry.The man, who seemed to have read what she was thinking, said something unexpected.

The man made an offer of unusual generosity. After confirming that Caroline lived nearby, he, without any hesitation, helped her unload all the gravel from her car and then loaded it into his truck. With Caroline leading the way, the man drove his truck to her home.Upon arriving, the man helped her unload all the 1,500 pounds of gravel onto her driveway.Greatly moved, Caroline thanked the man again and again, a warm current rising in her heart, but the man insisted that she not worry about it and was ready to leave.
Caroline didn’t want him to leave empty-handed.She tried to offer him money and then wine, but he wouldn’t accept them. Then it occurred to her that she could offer him a tour of her garden. To her relief, this time the man accepted it gladly.Caroline twisted a handful of big, prickly cucumbers off the vine, and gave them to the man.Thrilled, he put them under his arm, marched off back to his truck and drove off.Today, inspired by the man, Caroline tries to give others a hand whenever she can.
