A Love of Gardening
“[1] If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden.” These words come from the author of the book The Secret Garden, [2]first published in 1911.At that time①, only the very rich in Britain had gardens.Very soon after this, homes with gardens② began to be built. This is [3]what started the British love of gardening! Today, millions of③ Brits like to say [4]that they have “green fingers④”, with around half the population spending their free time gardening.
For many people in the UK, their garden is their own private world. Each spring, children plant sunflowers and wait to see [5]which one is the tallest.Expert gardeners know just the right corner for roses, and others spend hours trying to grow perfect vegetables⑤ to enter into competitions⑥.[6]And while many Brits like nothing better than spending their Sunday cutting the grass, some are happy just to sit under the branches of the trees⑦ and enjoy the beauty of the world around them.

But in cities, limited space has led to⑧ people looking for new solutions. Those without outside space can rent small pieces of land [7]on which to grow things.Today, there are over 4,000 people in London waiting for such pieces of land. One recent idea has been to turn rooftops and walls into private gardens. These gardens have helped make the cities greener and improve air quality⑨.
As well as⑩ being good for⑪ the environment, gardening is also good for the soul. What other free-time activity⑫ allows you to be⑬ at one with nature⑭ and create more beautiful living things? And if you’re in any doubt about⑮ this, take a moment⑯to reflect on⑰ this line from The Secret Garden:“Where you tend a rose ...A thistle cannot grow.”
【释疑难】 [7]“介词+关系代词+动词不定式”结构,作定语,相当于定语从句on which they can grow things。

A
(2026·长沙长郡中学期末)“My instincts tell me this is Opung’s faeces (粪便),” said Nayla Azmi as she studied the clump of hair, broken egg shells and bones while out in the forest. In the local Batak language, “Opung” means grandparent and is used to refer to tigers. The Batak people, indigenous (土生土长的) to Sumatra in Indonesia, have legends about ancestors making friends with tigers.
Azmi, 35, is part of an all-women indigenous patrol team, the Nuraga Bhumi Institute, founded in 2021.Their job is to help Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP) rangers protect 100 hectares of buffer zone territory.
The GLNP, established in 1980, protects almost 1.1 million hectares of the 2.6 million hectare Leuser ecosystem. However, with many unfenced borders and a shortage of rangers, it’s easy for poachers (偷猎者) or palm oil companies to move onto the land. The Leuser ecosystem is the only place where tigers, elephants, orangutans (猩猩) and rhinos live together in the wild, but all are endangered due to poaching and habitat destruction.
Azmi founded the Nuraga Bhumi Institute, which operates near a tourist hot spot for wild orangutan encounters, to address the gender imbalance and lack of indigenous people in local preservation.“Only about 15 percent of Sumatran environmentalists are women; the percentage of indigenous women is probably less than half that,” says Azmi.
The team members undergo practical training to conduct patrols effectively. They learn to use GPS, camera traps and drones, identify and take apart poachers’ traps, and report findings to park authorities. The team also hosts weekly protection education classes for local children.
As another day ends, they watch footage of a tiger. The team is delighted to know a tiger in their territory is safe — for now.
1.How does the author introduce the topic?( )
A.By sharing a local legend.
B.By introducing a key individual.
C.By discussing a traditional belief.
D.By describing an environmentalist’s fieldwork.
2.What can be inferred about the GLNP?( )
A.It gives priority to the protection of tigers.
B.It cooperates with palm oil companies.
C.It struggles with illegal human activities.
D.It’s the only habitat for certain species.
However, with many unfenced borders and a shortage of rangers ...to move onto the land.
3.Why did Azmi establish the Nuraga Bhumi Institute?( )
A.To enhance local wildlife research.
B.To support the growth of eco-tourism.
C.To promote inclusion in protection.
D.To assist the authorities in catching poachers.

Plastic is widely used for countless daily items, yet only around 9% of the plastic we use gets recycled. The rest is either burned, which releases harmful gases, or buried. Most of this waste plastic ends up in oceans, where it takes centuries to break down and harms sea creatures.
Worse still, current biodegradable plastics don’t solve the issue fully. They don’t break down completely in seawater; and instead, they split into tiny microplastics. These microplastics are too small to be filtered out easily, so they enter our soil, water sources, and food supplies, eventually making their way into human bodies.Scientists even predict that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.
To solve this problem, researchers at Japan’s RIKEN Centre developed a new type of plastic.Unlike other biodegradable plastics, it fully dissolves (溶解) in seawater. When dissolved, it breaks into original substances that bacteria (细菌) can fully decompose (分解) — leaving no harmful remains.Tests show it decomposes in hours in seawater and about 10 days in soil.
This new plastic has other advantages too.It is non-toxic (so it won’t harm living things) and non-flammable (so it can’t catch fire easily). When heated to 120 ℃, it can be shaped into various forms: a hard, scratch-resistant surface, flexible rubber objects, or strong items that hold heavy weight — this flexibility suits different needs.
Takuzo Aida, who led the research, said, “With this new material, we’ve created plastics that are strong, stable, recyclable, multi-functional, and importantly, do not produce microplastics.” It could be used in 3D printing, medical equipment, or single-use packaging, helping reduce plastic pollution in both oceans and daily life.
5.How does the author introduce the problem in paragraph 1?( )
A.By giving opinions and ideas.
B.By providing facts and results.
C.By sharing experiences and stories.
D.By comparing similarities and differences.
6.What is the main problem with current biodegradable plastics?( )
A.They burn out slowly.
B.They harm land animals.
C.They form more microplastics.
D.They pollute air when thrown away.
Worse still ...they split into tiny microplastics.
7.What can we infer from the text?( )
A.This plastic can be shaped at any temperature.
B.Scientists plan to develop more advanced plastics.
C.The new plastic is especially suitable for medical use.
D.The new plastic might be widely used in many fields.
8.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?( )
A.To compare different plastic recycling methods.
B.To introduce a practical solution to plastic pollution.
C.To explain the process of making a new type of plastic.
D.To discuss microplastics’ harmful effects on human health.

A series of activities were organized, including a waste-sorting competition between classes where we learned how to protect the environment better.Besides, we also set up a corner to exchange used books and stationery, which was popular among us.
The event was a great success. It not only helped us develop green habits but also made me realise the importance of protecting the environment in daily life.Have you had similar activities in your school? I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
