Section Ⅴ LESSON 3 MEMORIES OF CHRISTMAS
I still remember the last Christmas Granny spent with us.It began in the middle of November on a cold, windy day①.I remember the wind because Granny’s grey hair② was a mess when she arrived. That was also the day Granny moved in③. Somehow, at the time④, I didn’t know she was sick.[1]Maybe I was too young, maybe she hid it too well, or maybe I was just too excited that Christmas was on the way⑤.
After Granny moved in, she spent most of her time on the brown sofa by the fire⑥.Sometimes she was quiet, but she seemed happy.[2]When I wrote a letter to Father Christmas telling him about the presents I wanted, Granny made an effort to⑦ help me.Her hand was slightly shaky⑧, but she wrote “Father Christmas, the North Pole” on the envelope⑨.
【释疑难】 [2]句中When引导时间状语从句,从句中telling him about the presents I wanted为动词-ing形式作状语,其中I wanted为省略了关系代词that/which的定语从句,修饰先行词the presents,关系代词在从句中作宾语时可省略。
[3]In December, our excitement grew each day — lights appeared in the streets, Christmas cards arrived, and there was snow everywhere. Granny and I made sugar biscuits, stuffed the turkey⑩ and then I sat on my granny’s lap and we sang Christmas songs. My favourite song was Frosty the Snowman and I loved the bit that went “Thumpety-thump-thump, thumpety-thump-thump, look at Frosty go!” Granny had the patience to⑪ sing it over and over again⑫.
On Christmas Eve⑬, Granny took a seat⑭ by the fire as we put up⑮ the Christmas tree.I hung most of the decorations on the branches⑯.
“That’s the most beautiful tree I’ve ever seen,” Granny said.
Then she started singing, “Oh, Christmas tree, oh, Christmas tree, you fill my heart with music⑰ ...”
Before bed, Granny and I left a plate of sugar biscuits out for Father Christmas, and put a stocking at the end of my bed.I remember Granny sitting on my bed and singing softly until I fell asleep⑱.
My stocking was full of⑲ small toys and sweets on Christmas morning, and there were presents under the tree.I was on my best behaviour⑳ as we opened the presents.Later, Granny called me over㉑.
“I have something special for you,” Granny whispered. “It’s for all your treasures.Merry Christmas.”
It was a music box with a ballet dancer inside.
After breakfast, Auntie Kath and my cousin David arrived. While Mum, Dad and Auntie Kath got lunch ready㉒, David and I played outside. We raced around the garden and rolled a big snowball㉓ to make a lovely snowman.Granny stayed inside by the fire.I remember catching her eye㉔ through the window.
“Come outside, Granny,” I called, but she just waved.
Lunch was late, but it was a loud and exciting affair㉕.We put on㉖ silly paper hats and had a big turkey with potatoes, followed by Christmas pudding.[4]David put so much pudding in his mouth that he couldn’t swallow.
【释疑难】 [4]句中so ...that ...
“How’s the pudding?” Granny asked.
“Mmmph, mmmph, mmmph,” said David.
Auntie Kath didn’t think it was funny, but the rest of us did.Granny laughed so much that her paper hat fell off.
A few weeks after that Christmas, Granny passed away㉗.I think of㉘ her often though, especially at Christmas. Each year,I take out㉙ the music box she gave me.Inside I keep Granny’s paper hat and the letter she helped me write that Christmas. Mum gave the letter back to me some years ago when I no longer㉚believed in㉛ Father Christmas.[5]When I think about what makes Christmas so magical, it’s not just gifts and Father Christmas that come to mind㉜. It’s also my memory of Granny. Now I’m the one who makes sugar biscuits each year, and I always make one in a G-shape — G for Granny.
其中When引导时间状语从句,从句中包含what引导的宾语从句,主句it’s not just ...that come to mind为强调句,强调主语not just gifts and Father Christmas。

A
(2026•河南郑州月考)For hundreds of years, my town has been having a commemoration (纪念) day to honor late heroes making a big difference in our town. The event has always been organized by a team of volunteers until they age and pass the task on to the next generation.
We always close our ceremony by reading the names of the late heroes over a soft drumming (击鼓). As the years passed and memories faded, the names of the dead were becoming a blur (模糊的记忆) and in some cases meaningless.More townspeople had difficulty appreciating the significance of the day and fewer were willing to join the team to continue the tradition, there being one volunteer taking charge for a twenty-year period.Attendance was suffering as well.Eventually, the celebration had become boring and uninspired.
Our senior volunteers were worried that if townspeople continued to lose sight of heroes’ contributions, our commemoration day would evolve into something unrecognizable.Something needed to be done.Specially selected volunteers were sought to help ease the team’s burden. It was an honor for me to be asked to assist.
I volunteered to give a speech for the coming commemoration day.The focus of my planned speech would be to change the reading of the names and honorable title of our late heroes from something routine into something that would make it clear that these were genuine heroes who once walked among us.I tried contacting their family members, distant relatives, and old friends.Amazed, everyone was so thrilled to share so many fond stories and old photos of their loved ones that I felt as if I knew each hero personally.
I integrated all those into my speech, which turned out well received, acting as the catalyst (催化剂) that got our commemoration day observance back on track.Townspeople, once reminded, were happy to dive in and show their respect.

The Qixi Festival, the Chinese Valentine’s Day, was a disappointment not only for forgotten lovers, but also for businessmen left with empty pockets.
The cold welcome has caused experts to seriously worry that the Lovers’ Festival, marked for generations since the Han Dynasty (206 BC — AD 220), is dying out. Some have even called for the government to make the festival a legal Chinese Lovers’ Day.
But the effectiveness of such a measure is in doubt, although efforts to preserve traditional festivals are worth high praise.
A growing number of traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, share the same fate of the Qixi Festival.
Young people are showing less interest in traditional culture as symbolized by these festivals.Even if all traditional festivals are finally made legal, the risk of them becoming purely formalized celebrations with little meaning is not reduced. If the younger generation fails to appreciate the cultural significance of these holidays, there is little that can be done.
Concern about the traditional holidays also reminds people of the growing influence of foreign cultures as the country opens wider to the outside world. With traditional festivals becoming less important and imports such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day gaining widespread popularity, the public including cultural professionals have tended to measure traditional Chinese festivals in economic terms.
Business rather than culture has begun to play a dominant (占主导地位的)role.More and more people are interested in how much money can be made during the holidays.
In fact, what makes traditional festivals unique and what keeps them alive is their cultural elements. After all, it is unique culture that contributes to the world’s diversity (多样性)with globalization.

A.The disappointment for both businessmen and lovers.
B.The popularity of Qixi Festival among the public.
C.The action to preserve culture and traditional festivals.
D.The failure to make traditional Chinese festivals legal.
6.What’s the author’s attitude to the effectiveness of the legalization of the Qixi Festival?( )
A.Positive. B.Unconcerned.
C.Hopeful. D.Doubtful.
7.What can we learn from paragraph 5?( )
A.The legal traditional festivals ensure the meaningfulness of the celebrations.
B.Making the festivals legal can reduce the risk of their disappearance.
C.Preserving traditional festivals relies on youth’s valuing their cultural values.
D.The formalized celebrations are thought more highly of by the young people.
8.What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?( )
A.To review the effects of globalization on the world’s cultural diversity.
B.To inform the public of traditional Chinese festivals’ dying out.
C.To highlight the role of cultural elements in preserving traditional festivals.
D.To warn people against measuring traditional festivals in economic terms.
