One morning when I’d arrived at the club earlier than usual, he walked past me on his way to the water. Then he stopped.“How would you like to swim against me? Just for fun, I mean,” he asked.“Now? Against you?” I looked at him in surprise.“It’s just about 200 yards.” He pointed in that direction and smiled at me.“Okay,” I said. Teenagers are often very competitive, and I was no different.Though I was confident of winning, I started out as fast as I could go.When we reached the beach wall, I was already about three quarters exhausted. But he didn’t look tired at all.By the end of this game, my legs were in knots. My arms and shoulders were numb.I wanted very badly to quit and walk the rest of the way.But I struggled and made it. Ten minutes later my friend, Sammy Kauua, arrived.I told him some of what had happened.Sammy laughed.“Are you kidding? That’s Duke Kahanamoku. He won gold medals at the Olympics.I guess he’s pretty good for sure!” Several days later when I saw Kahanamoku on the beach, I talked to him and asked how an athlete could become good enough to win in the Olympics. He told me he did most of his swimming at the beach and then added, “I swam because I liked it.It was always fun, and I was pretty good at it.We trained all right, but mostly we just swam.It was natural.I always enjoyed doing it.” I was disappointed at the time because there was no easy answer there, no secret formula for success as an athlete.Thinking back on it now, though, I find the answer he gave me very appealing. 24.According to the text, Duke Kahanamoku .( ) A.was an Olympic champion B.did not know how to surf C.was Sammy Kauua’s good friend D.did not spend much time swimming 解析:A 细节理解题。 He won gold medals at the Olympics. 25.How did the author feel about beating Kahanamoku at first?( ) A.It was difficult. B.He realized swimming was an easy matter. C.He understood what Kahanamoku truly meant. D.He felt disappointed about how to be a successful swimmer. C Running is often tiring and a lot of hard work, but nothing beats the feeling you get after finishing a long workout around the track. But while it’s long been believed that endorphins (内啡肽) — chemicals in the body that cause happiness — are behind the so-called “runner’s high”, a study suggested that there may be more to this phenomenon than we previously knew. According to a recent study published by a group of scientists from several German universities, a group of chemicals called endocannabinoids (内源性大麻素) may actually be responsible for this familiar great feeling. To test this theory, the scientists turned to mice. Both mice and humans release high levels of endorphins and endocannabinoids after exercise, along with many other chemicals. After exercising on running wheels, the mice seemed happy and relaxed and displayed no signs of anxiety. But after being given a drug to block their endorphins they changed. However, when their endocannabinoids were blocked with a different drug, the runner’s high symptoms seemed to fade. “The long-held notion of endorphins being responsible for the runner’s high is false.Endorphins are effective pain relievers, but only when it comes to the pain in your body and muscles you feel after working out,” Patrick Lucas Austin wrote on a science blog. Similar studies are yet to be carried out on humans, but it’s already well known that exercise is a highly effective way to get rid of stress or anxiety. The UK’s National Health Service even prescribes (开药方) exercise for patients who are suffering from depression. “Being depressed can leave you feeling low in energy, which might put you off being more active.Regular exercise can boost your mood if you have depression, and it’s especially useful for people with mild to moderate (中等的) depression,” it wrote on its website. It seems like nothing can beat that feeling we get after a good workout, even if we don’t fully understand where it comes from.At least if we’re feeling down, we know that all we have to do is put on our running shoes. 28.What did scientists from German universities recently discover?( ) A.Working out is a highly effective way to treat depression. B.The runner’s high could be caused by endocannabinoids. C.Endorphins may contribute to one’s high spirits after running. D.The level of endorphins and endocannabinoids could affect one’s mood. 29.Why did the scientists give mice drugs in their experiment?( ) A.To find what reduces the runner’s high symptoms. B.To see the specific symptoms of the runner’s high. C.To identify what is responsible for the runner’s high. D.To test what influences the level of endocannabinoids released. 30.What does the underlined word “notion” mean in paragraph 7?( ) A.Effect. B.Goal. C.Question. D.Belief. 31.According to the UK’s National Health Service, regular workouts .( ) A.are the best way to treat depression B.can help ease depression symptoms C.only work for those with serious depression D.can help people completely recover from depression 解析:B 细节理解题。 D (2026•山西省实验中学月考)Making exercise fun is a challenge for many people who struggle to find the motivation (动机) to work out. But rather than forcing yourself to enjoy running or that gym class you once attended, the solution may lie in something more straightforward — simply choosing exercises that fit your personality, according to a recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology. To reach their findings, the study’s co-lead author, Flaminia Ronca, a professor in exercise science at University College London, and her coworkers first directed the 132 subjects, aged between 25 and 51 years old, to complete a questionnaire showing their personality types. The study took a commonly used model that describes someone’s personality, namely outgoing people, quiet worriers, kind helpers, curious explorers, and careful planners. The researchers then ran fitness tests on the subjects and put them into two groups. One group was given an eight-week biking plan, while the control group did 10 minutes a week of stretching (伸展) exercises. Of the 132 subjects, 86 completed both pre-and post-testing either side of these eight weeks. The study team found that, although fitness improved across all personality types for those who completed the biking and stretching programs, there was a marked difference in enjoyment of exercise. Outgoing people enjoyed the higher-intensity (强度) lab fitness tests, while quiet worriers enjoyed the home-based light-intensity workouts. The study also showed how exercise affected people’s stress levels based on their personality. People who scored high in neuroticism, meaning they feel more anxious, experienced a bigger drop in stress levels compared with other groups. “I think that’s quite a powerful message to give,” Ronca said. Considering the many benefits of exercise, she hoped their findings would encourage people to find forms of exercise they enjoy, making it easier to stick to a fitness routine and to improve their fitness over time. 32.In what way were the two groups different in terms of research design?( ) A.Their age. B.Their hobby. C.Exercise type. D.Health condition. One group was given an eight-week biking plan, while the control group did 10 minutes a week of stretching (伸展) exercises. 33.What did the study find about personality?( ) A.It drives people to achieve dreams. B.It affects the enjoyment of exercise. C.It shows similarities in certain ways. D.It helps us complete more exercises. 34.What does Ronca intend to explain in the last paragraph?( ) A.The application of the findings. B.The background of the experiment. C.The direction of further research. D.The arrangement for daily exercise. 35.Which is the most suitable title for the text?( ) A.The Influence of Exercise on Personality B.The Benefits of the Stretching Program C.Giving You New Motivation to Exercise D.Matching Workouts to Your Personality 解析:D 标题归纳题。 (2026•河南省实验中学月考)If you always find at-home exercise difficult to stay motivated (有动力的) like the exercise at the gym. Here are some tips for you. Set specific (具体的) fitness goals. Many people start with unclear fitness goals like “Lose weight. Be healthier.” 36. , but they don’t help much with planning or getting started. If you already have a regular gym habit, these goals might be easy enough to keep up. But if you need to get serious about making yourself get off the sofa and exercise at home, I don’t think they work. 37. . For example, you could set a goal to lift a certain weight with your arms by your next birthday, or lose a certain number of pounds by an upcoming event. The key is to make goals that are personal, actionable, measurable, and time-bound. Meet your own deadlines. You’ll find that it keeps you focused. For instance, if you set a goal to do a one-legged squat (深蹲) by May and actually achieve it in April, this will make you feel proud and eager to set the next goal. 38. , try a rewards system. If your goal is to lift 30 pounds with your arms by December and you’re currently at 15 pounds, think of rewards for reaching 20 and 25 pounds. Maybe treat yourself to a meal at a favorite restaurant. 39. . Cristina Chan, an F45 Global Recovery Athlete, says that tracking your workouts in a way that’s easy to see can make a huge difference when exercising alone. She suggests marking a calendar, using a habit tracker app, or even putting sticky notes on a wall to record your active days. Seeing how regularly you keep doing it over time is a powerful motivator. 40. . A.These are great ideas B.If you focus on your goals C.Pay for your gym membership D.Keep track of how you’re doing toward your goals E.If a general feeling of doing better isn’t enough for you F.That’s why you should start setting much more specific goals G.It enables you to focus on showing up instead of physical results I’d always 41 living alone: the life of no rules and regulations and being independent. So, I was 42 about this new stage in my life when moving into my university dormitory. 43 , during the first few months, I’d find myself crying every day.Coming from a big family, I was 44 to noises surrounding me.Therefore, the scary 45 at night was the worst.I couldn’t even 46 without keeping the lights on. Instead, we hurried to the playground, because today was the class basketball final. Our competition, Class 5, had beaten us twice last year. We wanted to win back our pride. Our team had only seven players. The smallest was Leo, only 165 cm tall, but he could run like the wind. The tallest was Ken, 185 cm, who just learned basketball last winter. I, Jack, was the captain. My job was to pass the ball and keep everyone calm. The sun was still high. As we changed our shoes, our PE teacher, Mr Liu, came over. “Remember,” he said, “basketball is five people moving like one. Trust your teammates, and trust yourself.” We put our hands together and shouted, “One, two, three, fight!” The game started. Within two minutes Class 5 scored four points. Their center, a strong boy nicknamed “Bear”, pushed Ken aside easily. On the bench our classmates began to sigh. I felt sweat in my hands. Then something small changed the day. Leo stole the ball near our basket and passed it to me. I was about to shoot when I saw Ken running alone under the hoop (篮筐). I passed the ball to him. Ken jumped, scored, and the whole class exploded with cheers. 4 — 2. The score was still close, but now we believed we could play. The second half was harder. Bear kept scoring, and with five minutes left we were behind 18 — 22. My legs were heavy, and Leo’s face was red like a tomato. During a time-out, Mr Liu simply said, “Keep moving. When you are tired, your friend is waiting.” He drew a quick arrow on his board: Leo would cut along the baseline, Ken would set a screen, and I would slip (溜走) to the weak side for the return pass. “Trust the pattern,” he added, tapping the board twice. We stepped back onto the court with Mr Liu’s simple words still in our ears. We won, hugging, jumping, and forgetting our tired legs. We stepped back onto the court with Mr Liu’s simple words still in our ears. Leo quickly moved along the baseline like a small bird, while Ken set a strong screen to block Bear. I slipped to the weak side as planned and waited. Leo passed the ball to me smoothly. I jumped and shot it into the hoop. The crowd cheered loudly. Now the score was 22 to 22. Everyone believed we could win. Ken and Leo worked hard to steal the ball again. We passed it fast and moved as one. Finally, with only ten seconds left, I passed to Ken near the basket. He scored again! Our class shouted with joy. We won, hugging, jumping, and forgetting our tired legs. Leo smiled brightly and Ken looked proud. Our classmates ran to us, patting our backs and shouting congratulations. Mr Liu came over and said we played like real friends. I felt happy because we trusted each other and never gave up. This game taught me that teamwork can beat any strong player. We lost twice last year, but today we won back our pride. Walking home, I thought about Leo’s fast moves and Ken’s big steps. Truly, five people moving like one can make a difference.
