A
(2026•成都外国语学校检测)I recently had an experience. I was a little too hard on one of my players. It turns out this is his first year playing baseball. He’s played other sports and is clearly athletic. He’s also very coachable. In fact, however, I got on him for not running out a ball he hit. Technically, I was right to correct the behaviour — we expect our players to run hard to first every time. However, the manner in which I corrected him wasn’t suitable for the player. This showed me an insight (洞察力) about coaching youth sports: coaches should know their players and motivate (激发) them.
It is the coach’s responsibility to get to know their players and understand what motivates them. Children are not all motivated the same way. If the coach only has one motivational tool in their toolbox, e.g. the carrot-and-stick way of rewarding good behaviour and punishing bad, they will struggle to reach all of their players. Some will react to that type of motivation, but others will not. As Drs. Laura Smith and Charles Elliott say in Child Psychology & Development for Dummies, “What’s rewarding for one child may not be for another.”
In this particular example, I should have realised that this athlete was playing baseball for the first time and there are some things that he hasn’t already known. It’s my job to teach him — and to do so in the best way to make sure that he picks it up. I should expect other players with more experience to know about running the ball out no matter how hard the hit is or whether they think it might be foul (犯规的). But, for a first-time player, this isn’t second nature yet. I’ve found some ways.

I asked my husband AJ as we stood at our first 5K race. Newly married, we were opposites. He loved pizza and weight-lifting while I preferred sports but hated running. Though I’d played college volleyball, AJ had recently started jogging to lose weight.
When the starting gun fired, AJ ran ahead while I settled into a slow jog. To my surprise, I caught up with him soon. I sped up, leaving him behind. I finished in 25 minutes without training; AJ arrived later, a little shocked. “Just train more,” I encouraged. “You’ve got this.”
That defeat changed everything. AJ replaced TV nights with training, asking my marathon-running father for advice. They practiced pacing strategies and speed workouts during visits. When AJ completed his first marathon six months later, he announced a wild goal: run a marathon in all 50 states by age 50.
His challenges grew with our family as I was pregnant with our third child and struggling with our sleepless nights due to our first two children, while AJ trained for a 100-mile race near our home. On the race day, my children and I cheered as friends took turns pacing him. For nearly 24 hours, AJ battled exhaustion and falls, finishing with skinned knees and torn clothes. “I wanted to quit,” he admitted later, “but I couldn’t let our girls see me give up.”
That muddy finish line taught our family about courage. AJ proved ordinary people can achieve great things through determination. Though he still had 25 states left in his marathon quest, completing that 100-mile race showed what happens when you refuse to quit.
Years after that first 5K where I accidentally sparked this journey, AJ still jokes that beating him was my best advice. But watching him change from a reluctant (不情愿的) jogger to an ultramarathon runner taught us both that true growth begins where comfort zones end.

C.Excited. D.Confused.
When the starting gun fired ... a little shocked.
6.What changed AJ’s attitude towards marathon?( )
A.His defeat in the first 5K race.
B.Pressure from family responsibilities.
C.A desire to improve his health issues.
D.His father-in-law’s marathon experience.
7.What does the author believe her husband can achieve?( )
A.Becoming a professional athlete.
B.Fixing his unhealthy lifestyle.
C.Completing marathons worldwide.
D.Great things through determination.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.It is also the most neglected (被忽视的).Common reasons for not eating breakfast include having no time, not feeling hungry, traditional dislike and dieting.
Breakfast simply means “break the fast”.Your body spends at least 6 to 12 hours each night in a fasting state. In the morning your body needs energy for the day’s work ahead.
A good breakfast should provide 1/3 of your total calorie needs for the day.On average, we eat 400 less calories for breakfast than for dinner. If breakfast doesn’t appeal (吸引) to you in the morning, try eating a lighter dinner earlier in the evening or save half of your dinner for breakfast in the morning.
If you still aren’t hungry in the morning, start with something small like juice or toast or have a nutritious (有营养的) mid-morning snack (小吃) later when you are hungry.
So, you say you are on a diet. Some people fear that eating breakfast will make them hungrier during the day and they will eat more.It is true that eating breakfast is likely to make you feel hungry throughout the day. That is because your body is working correctly.Although you may feel as if you are eating more all day long, in reality you are probably not.
Not eating breakfast can also cause you overeat, since a fall in blood sugar often makes you feel very hungry later. To make matters worse, since your body is in a slow state, it will not be able to burn those extra calories very efficiently (有效).If you feed your body healthy snacks and meals throughout the day, you are less likely to become hungry and stuff (填饱) yourself as soon as you begin to eat.
Since breakfast is the first and most important meal of the day, choosing the right food is important. The best breakfast foods are fruits, juice, lean meat and grain products such as bread, rice, noodles and cereals.
9.What is the meaning of the word “fast” in the phrase “break the fast” in paragraph 2?( )
A.Movement. B.Going without food.
C.Quickness. D.Certain kind of food.
10.If you don’t want to have breakfast in the morning, according to the author’s suggestion, what should you do?( )
A.See a doctor to have an examination.
B.Have a little supper.
C.Go to a restaurant to enjoy a good meal.
D.Have a good supper.
11.Eating breakfast, in fact, makes your body .
( )
A.work out of order
B.produce too much energy
C.work well
D.feel hungry quicker
It is true that eating breakfast ...is working correctly.
12.What does the author mainly do in the last paragraph?( )
A.The author mainly persuades us to have a good breakfast.
B.The author mainly tells us what food isn’t suitable for breakfast.
C.The author mainly describes when and how we should have our breakfast.
