Step1 Lead‑in
1. Review: Ask students to talk about teenage problems learned in Welcome to the unit.
2. Lead‑in: Many teenagers write letters to ask for advice when they have problems. Today we will read two letters from Kitty and Simon.
3. Introduce reading skill: Scanning — move eyes quickly to look for specific information.
Step2 While-reading
Task1 Skim the two letters
Ask students to skim the letters and answer:
What are Kitty’s and Simon’s main problems?
Task2 Scan for details
Students read the letters again. Finish Part A on Page24.
Check answers in pairs. Teacher explains key phrases:
make all the decisions, choose clothes, eat out, achieve a balance, stay up late, fall behind.
Task3 Detailed reading
Read the letters paragraph by paragraph. Explain difficult sentences.
• Kitty: My parents make all the decisions for me. They either lose patience or just stick to their own ideas.
• Simon: I find it hard to achieve a balance between my homework and my hobbies. I hate to fall behind.
Task4 True or False (Part B P24)
Students finish the exercise individually. Check answers and correct false sentences.

This class focuses on training the scanning reading strategy. Most students can quickly find the details of Kitty’s and Simon’s problems. Some students are weak in understanding the either…or… sentence pattern, which needs further practice in the next period. Students are highly interested in the topic of teenage worries. More real‑life examples can be used. Students should tell the difference between fall behind and other fall phrases.
