When snow fell over Longnan, a county in Jiangxi Province, in January 2024, Zhong Yanpeng’s phone buzzed with worry. He was in neighboring Guangdong, yet his mind was back home — on the 350-year-old Hakka round house he had tended for over 50 years.
“Rain and snow are the worst enemies of these old walls,” he told his team, and packed his tools quickly.
He drove through the storm across the provincial border to Yangcun Village. The four-story building stood silent beneath the grey sky, its rammed-earth (夯土) walls damp-darkened. Zhong stepped closer, tapped gently with his small hammer, and listened. “Still solid,” he nodded in relief.
To most visitors, these round houses are mere curiosities. For Zhong, they represent memory, duty, and identity. Raised in one, he took up carpentry at 16 and stuck to the craft. Their strength comes not only from clay and lime, but also from brown sugar, egg whites, and sticky rice — ingredients aged for months for use in defensive walls. “Ancient wisdom,” he said with a smile.
Yet such wisdom is fragile. Skilled craftsmen were scarce in the 1980s, and the shortage persists today. His nephew Li Minghua, also a master, sighs about youth: “They favor city apartments. My team’s youngest member is over 40.”
Zhong travels nationwide to learn from masters, consulting historians and former residents, and recording every detail. “Each house bears a unique story. Restoration must stay true to original materials, measurements, and methods,” he says.
By 2023, Longnan had restored nearly 100 round houses, but Zhong sees no victory here. “My biggest concern is skill inheritance. As the senior craftsman, I must set an example.” His team now totals more than 50 members. Still, the real question lingers: will young people choose working with traditional rammed-earth construction over urban comfort? The answer remains uncertain.
4. Why does Zhong tap the old wall with his hammer?
A. To record building data. B. To repair broken walls.
C. To take measurements. D. To check its condition.
5. What makes Hakka round house walls tough?
A. Local modern building clay. B. Specially mixed and aged materials.
C. Common kitchen ingredients. D. Modern protective chemicals.
6. What is Zhong’s attitude toward restoration work?
A. Casual and careless. B. Proud and worried.
C. Cautious and faithful. D. Doubtful and negative.
7. What is victory in Zhong’s eyes?
A. Building a larger team. B. Passing down the skills.
C. Restoring more round houses. D. Attracting young tourists.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. B
【解析】
【导语】本文主要讲述了传统匠人钟彦鹏五十余年坚守客家围屋修复保护事业、恪守传统修复工艺,同时担忧传统技艺传承的故事。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Zhong stepped closer, tapped gently with his small hammer, and listened. “Still solid,” he nodded in relief. (钟走近,用小锤子轻轻敲击,并倾听。“依然坚固。”他如释重负地点点头。)”可知,钟彦鹏敲击墙壁是为了通过声音判断墙体结构是否依然坚固,目的是检查墙体的健康状况。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Their strength comes not only from clay and lime, but also from brown sugar, egg whites, and sticky rice — ingredients aged for months for use in defensive walls. (它们的强度不仅来自黏土和石灰,还来自红糖、蛋清和糯米——这些成分经过数月的陈化,用于防御墙。)”可知,客家围屋的墙壁使用了多种原料混合、并且经过数月陈化处理的特殊材料,这是墙壁坚固耐用的核心原因。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“Zhong travels nationwide to learn from masters, consulting historians and former residents, and recording every detail. “Each house bears a unique story. Restoration must stay true to original materials, measurements, and methods,” he says. (钟走遍全国向各位匠人学习,咨询历史学家和原住居民,并且记录每一处细节。“每一座围屋都承载着独特的故事,修复必须忠实于原始材料、尺寸和工艺方法。”他说。)”可知,钟彦鹏在修复工作中不放过任何细节,严格恪守“忠于原貌”的修复原则,体现出他对修复工作谨慎小心、忠于传统的态度。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“By 2023, Longnan had restored nearly 100 round houses, but Zhong sees no victory here. (到2023年,龙南已经修复了近100座围屋,但钟并不认为这是胜利。)”和“My biggest concern is skill inheritance. (我最大的担忧是技艺的传承。)”可知,在钟彦鹏看来,修复一百座围屋也算不上真正的成功,只有解决他最大的担忧,实现传统夯土建造技艺的传承,才是真正的胜利。

In September, Shenzhen faced one of the most powerful natural challenges in its history-Super Typhoon Ragasa. With wind speeds reaching 200 kilometers per hour and accompanied by continuous heavy rain, it stood as the strongest storm to hit the city in decades. However, through careful preparation and quick emergency response, the city showed its strong ability to recover while minimizing damage and keeping people safe.
The city’s weather service had been closely watching the storm’s path for several days before its arrival. Authorities issued the highest-level red alerts a full 24 hours before the typhoon reached land, giving people important preparation time. The city government put into action complete emergency measures, most notably the “five suspensions” policy that temporarily stopped all work, education, business, market and public transportation activities across the city.
The success of the response was mainly due to Shenzhen’s well-organized community safety network. More than 20,000 community workers and volunteers carried out thorough door-to-door checks in risky neighborhoods. Their well-planned efforts made possible the safe moving of about 300,000 residents from dangerous areas to special emergency shelters. In one important case, emergency teams successfully moved 200 residents from old living buildings just hours before the typhoon came.
During the typhoon’s worst period, the usually busy city changed into an unusually calm city scene. Public places were empty, transport systems stopped working, and people stayed safely inside. Meanwhile, hard-working emergency teams worked continuously through the storm, dealing with fallen trees, fixing broken power lines, and handling local flooding.
The recovery after the typhoon moved forward with surprisingly good speed. Within 24 hours after the storm passed, important public services had mostly returned to normal operation. This successful typhoon response proved that facing nature’s powerful force requires both advanced city planning and shared social responsibility. As one emergency management leader rightly said, “While we cannot stop typhoons, we can certainly build cities that are fully ready to face them.”
8. What did the “five suspensions” policy mainly require people to do?
A. Move to other cities temporarily.
B. Stay indoors and stop all activities.
C. Prepare emergency supplies at home.
D. Help with the community rescue work.
9. What mainly made the resettling work so successful?
A. The weather forecast.
B. The community network
C. The help from neighborhoods.
D. The emergency team members.
10. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To warn readers about the dangers of typhoons
B. To introduce the weather characteristics of Shenzhen.
C. To state the problem of lacking preparation for natural disasters.
D. To present a successful example of urban emergency management.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Formation of Super Typhoons
B. The Importance of Weather Forecasting
C. A Successful Battle Against Super Typhoon
D. A Touching Story of Fighting Against Typhoon
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. D 11. C

AI has a water problem, which worries us a lot. People are increasingly using AI tools in their daily personal and professional lives. A significant amount of heat is produced by the energy required to power the tools. This heat is released into data centers, which provide those AI systems with the computational support and storage space they need to function.
There are no regulations for AI and no laws requiring technology companies to deal with the problem. That’s led scientists like Shaolei Ren, an associate professor at UC Riverside, to investigate this question independently. As he notes, cooling down the data centers requires an enormous amount of water, similar to the amount used by tens of thousands of residents (居民). “When you use water for a shower, for example, it can be repurposed,” says Ren, whose research is focused on how to make AI more socially and environmentally responsible. “When water is evaporated (蒸发) to cool down a data center, it’s gone.”
Even before the current AI development, data centers’ water and energy demands had steadily (稳定地) increased. In 2022, according to Google, its data centers used over five billion gallons of water, 20 percent more than in 2021; Microsoft used 34 percent more water companywide in 2022 than in 2021.
AI stands only to compound the existing resource demand that data centers create for the global energy system: In 2026, electricity consumption at data centers because of the increasing use of AI will double the amount in 2022, the International Energy Agency says.
“I explain it in terms my kid understands,” says Ren. “If you have a conversation with ChatGPT for 10 to 50 questions and answers, it will use about 500 milliliters of water, or the size of a standard bottle of water. This shocking water consumption shows how necessary it is for the technology industry to put more money in and develop energy-saving AI to cut down on such waste to ensure the digital inventions don’t come at the expense of our planet’s resources.”
12. What is the primary issue discussed in the text?
A. The safety risks of AI. B. The limited computational support.
C. The energy consumption by AI. D. The high cost of building data centers.
13. How does water used for data centers differ from shower water?
A. It’s cleaner in quality. B. It cannot be reused.
C. It consumes less water. D. It’s treated with chemicals.
14. What does the underlined word “compound” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Slow down. B. Connect with. C. Add to. D. Smooth out.
15. What’s the purpose of Ren’s words in the last paragraph?
A. To encourage the use of AI. B. To highlight the power of AI.
C. To provide the exact data for researchers. D. To call for the development of greener AI.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. D

Thank you for your attention!
【答案】One possible version:
Dear friends,
I’m Li Hua. Today, I’d like to talk about the recent extreme windy weather in our city and how we can stay safe during natural disasters.
The strong winds caused serious problems: traffic delays due to fallen trees, power cuts, water shortages, and even school closures. Some buildings had broken windows, and street signs were blown away.
To stay safe during such weather, remember these tips. Close all windows and doors tightly to prevent debris from entering. Stay indoors and avoid going outside. If you’re outdoors, avoid tall trees or unstable structures. Also, keep flashlights and emergency supplies ready for power outages.
This experience reminds us that climate change is real and dangerous. We must take action by reducing pollution and learning disaster survival skills. Let’s work together to protect our community and build a safer future.
Thank you for your attention!

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Two months ago, my friend Lisa, Harry and I, planned to do something adventurous, so we decided to explore a deep cave in the outskirt of our city with some food, water, torches and most importantly our cell phones. But things were not going well. We could not find any vehicle to drop us there. At long last, we managed to find a taxi which took us to the outskirt of the city. Another evidence of bad luck was that Harry had left his cell phone at home.
After we got out of the taxi, some of the locals told us the way to the cave. The cave looked very attractive yet still mysterious: the cave was so dark, and the tiny sounds made by the insects and animals could be heard properly, pulling us into the cave with some unknown supernatural power. As we were moving forward we made marks on the rocks along our path to remind us of the exit of the cave. And we always kept our mobiles in switch on mode to contact each other in case we got separated and even worse, lost in the cave.
As we were moving forward, Harry felt that somebody was following our footsteps but he left his intuition to a joke. When we reached in the deep of the cave, we lost our way and gradually the fog spread everywhere and we were not able to see each other properly. All of us got very scared of what was happening around us. Suddenly, we noticed that Harry was not with us and then we vaguely heard a shout from the depth of the cave and we thought it was Harry, so we started searching for him. But our torches were left no use in such thick fog.
续写词数应为150左右
Paragraph 1:
So we groped our way towards the direction of the shout.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
After we reunited with Harry, we tried to find the way out.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】So we groped our way towards the direction of the shout. Frightened as we were, we still made up our mind to search for Harry. Hardly can we see anything in the completely dark situation, so we had to feel our way to search Harry with all strength. Slowly and cautiously moving forward, we held our hands tightly in order not to be separated. With the voice approaching, we realized we would meet Harry immediately. Fortunately, when finding Harry sitting on the ground, we sighed with a relief.
After we reunited with Harry, we tried to find the way out. Without hesitation, we decided to hunt for these marks which we had made before. “I get it!” Harry screamed. Looking up quickly, we found these clear marks easily. It was with the help of these marks that we quickly found the exit. When walking out of the cave, we knew we were saved. From this experience, what we learnt was that it was dangerous to explore the unknown word without a fully detailed plan.
