When Ar’reiona Green was accepted to Sacramento State last year, she knew she would need books and school supplies. She didn’t expect to need a toolbox. Or hangers. Or that her dorm room wouldn’t come with a fan. Having grown up in the foster (寄养) system, she found life as a college student mostly mysterious.
That’s where Dec My Dorm stepped in. The program works with more than 140 foster youth headed to college, hosting an annual event in July to kit out each student with sheet sets, pillows and connections to other people in the same situation.
Green took part in the summer of 2024, leaving with several bags filled with the things she needed, including many items she didn’t know she would need, like dish soap.
The program started in 2018 when Jill Franklin, manager of the Independent Living Program in Los Angeles County, met a student who came from the foster system. This young student described arriving at the University of California at Berkeley with just a trash bag, not knowing that dorm rooms are spartan: a desk, a chair, a bed with an oddly sized mattress — and that’s it.
Franklin started with a small Amazon wishlist and a handful of students. It was particularly important that the kids were involved in the process as much as possible, she said, because they were used to living in spaces that were not their own. If they could pick their own bedding and their own blankets, they would create a room that said, “This is who I am.”
In 2022, she met Phyllis Shinbane from Connecting a Caring Community. Shinbane had been unaware that foster youth often have nothing they can bring with them to college, but realized this was a need she could help fill. Together, they raised more than $40,000 in donations in 2025.
“It’s just leveling the playing field,” said Shinbane. “It’s just putting them in a room where they’re not different, and where their past doesn’t define them.”
4. What does Dec My Dorm provide for foster youth?
A. Campus tours. B. Yearly scholarships.
C. Room supplies. D. Academic guidance.
5. What does the underlined word “spartan” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Plain and basic. B. Modern and stylish.
C. Small and crowded. D. Warm and personal.
6. Why were foster students encouraged to choose their own items?
A. To improve their life skills. B. To keep dorm rooms in order.
C. To make better use of donations. D. To give them a sense of identity.
7. What does Shinbane emphasize about the program?
A. It gives students a fair start. B. It makes dorm life more fun.
C. It helps build lasting friendships. D. It enables students to erase the past.

Elephants and gorillas in the Republic of the Congo’s rainforests spend a lot of time hiding in the shadows — or so we thought. Using drone (无人机) surveys and AI processing, scientists have discovered an extensive network of mysterious open clearings among the trees. Animals like elephants, gorillas visit these muddy areas, called bais, in the languages of the Indigenous Ba’Aka, to search for vital nutrition and maintain their complex social networks. The numerous playgrounds are visible in satellite images, and AI analysis is helping researchers find them more effectively.
The discovery began in 2021 when Sylvain Ngouma and Evan Hockridge came upon a massive clearing during fieldwork in Odzala-Kokoua National Park and found a trail (踪迹) of wet, pot-sized footprints leading through the woods to the open roundabout. Hockridge, who had thought bais were abnormal, says, “I had it backward. It kind of hit me when I was there. You can’t understand animal interactions without first understanding bais.”
For the next three summers, the team investigated the clearings. They analyzed camera-trap images, confirming what local people had told them — that these natural clearings are crucial gathering grounds for some of the world’s most endangered mammals. The bais, they realized, are big melting pots, big playgrounds, for a collection of forest animals.
During the initial surveys, the team followed elephant trails to move through the rainforest from bai to bai. This process led Hockridge to wonder about a network. Although previous studies documented animal behavior in selected bais, no one had counted them or had the means to map their distribution. The team partnered with African Parks, using drones to scan known sites. They trained an AI algorithm (算法) to identify bais in satellite imagery, revealing 2,176 clearings in one park — 10 times more than previously recorded.
Bais are always near rivers or streams. Most are smaller than a city block, but few, at more than 100 acres, are bigger than some college campuses. “Bais are ultimately islands of resources, and animals produce these networks of trails to essentially navigate to and from a network of bais,” Hockridge says. The researchers’ map of bais, the first of its kind, is also a map of conservation priorities. “We find that a huge portion of the animal community depends on this unique ecosystem. These species don’t have alternative habitats other than bais,” Hockridge says.
The study is also a step toward solving the ultimate mystery: How did bais form? Many ecologists have argued that a combination of hydrology (水文学) and animal landscaping is at play. But definitive proof remains elusive. Now, with a map in hand and camera traps still in place, the research team is tracking long-term changes, which have implications for the maintenance of these crucial animal habitats.
“We have hypotheses (假说),” Andrew Davies, an ecologist in Harvard, says, “but the short answer is: we don’t know.”
8. For rainforest animals, bais are places for ________.
A. fun and safety B. water and shelter
C. food and connection D. shade and entertainment
9. What can we learn about Ngouma and Hockridge’s research?
A. It discovered how bais formed.
B. It was the first to map the network of bais.
C. It analyzed images of bais provided by local people.
D. It concluded bais were spots intended for endangered species.
10. What does the underlined word “elusive” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Difficult to find. B. Simple to clarify.
C. Possible to overestimate. D. Unlikely to question.
11. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. Conservation Priorities in Rainforests
B. Hidden Playgrounds Revealed in Rainforests
C. Secrets of Rainforest Animals’ Social Networks
D. Modern Tools Adopted for Rainforest Exploration

When you were little, did you fight with your brother or sister about who would get the last gummy bear? Or who got to sit in the front of the ride? Behind these cases lies a hidden mindset — zero-sum thinking, a term that comes from math. In a zero-sum game, the total of gains and losses among the players always adds up to zero. Oskar Morgenstern first formally described this concept (概念) in the 1944 book Theory of Games and Economic Behavior. Since then it has been widely used in economic theories and game theory.
Drawing on ideas of evolutionary psychology (进化心理学), some have argued that zero-sum thinking arose as a cognitive (认知的) adaptation within early-human ancestors (祖先) who were forced to compete over limited resources. As such, the likeliness to subjectively view resource distribution as zero-sum might have been the main strategy in our evolutionary past, giving individuals with higher zero-sum beliefs a relative advantage over others. Thus, in modern environments, zero-sum beliefs are adopted under similar conditions of threat and resource shortage and can be changed only with thoughtful reflection.
Zero-sum beliefs have important intrapersonal and interpersonal consequences (后果). At the intrapersonal level, greater acceptance of zero-sum beliefs is connected with more negative (and less positive) effects, more selfishness and lower life satisfaction. Zero-sum beliefs can also be interpersonally harmful, such as when negotiators who believe that the other side gains at their expense miss chances for win-win deals. More broadly, people who adopt zero-sum beliefs often feel lonelier. Thus, zero-sum beliefs are connected with both the quality and the quantity of close personal relationships.
To fight these effects, we can remember to remain mindful that there are numerous opportunities for non-zero-sum interactions with others, such as finding opportunities to exchange surpluses or favors with others. Doing so provides the necessary conditions for trust and mutual benefit to form, which are both necessary for any business or economy to function well, in good times and in bad.
12. Which is the core of zero-sum mindset?
A. Every coin has two sides. B. The other’s gain is your loss.
C. Many hands make light work. D. United we stand, divided we fall.
13. What does Paragraph 2 try to stress concerning zero-sum thinking?
A. It is unique to humans. B. It tends to be short-lived.
C. It helped ancestors survive. D. It is hardwired into humans.
14. Why are negotiators mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To explain how zero-sum beliefs work.
B. To guide people to achieve win-win deals.
C. To show the negative effects of zero-sum beliefs.
D. To encourage people to put zero-sum beliefs to use.
15. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
A. Trust is a two-way street. B. A true win-win is achievable.
C. Opportunity knocks but once. D. Economy undergoes thick and thin.

It was a sunny Friday afternoon. Doreen looked out and saw her elderly neighbor Mr. Bower across the street sitting quietly in his garage. She had known him well for years, and everyone in the community loved this gentle old man. However, his garage had long been filled with piles of old furniture, discarded tools, worn-out boxes and various small items he could not bear to throw away. Little space was left for him to move around comfortably.
Doreen felt concerned for him. She knew Mr. Bower lived alone most of the time. He kept those old things not only out of habit but also because he cherished memories behind them. Yet the messy garage brought him inconvenience and even safety risks. This time, Doreen made up her mind to help him tidy up the garage in a gentle way.
She walked across the street and knocked softly on the garage door. “Good afternoon, Mr. Bower,” she greeted him with a warm smile. “There are so many items in your garage and most of them are no longer useful to you. Why not hold a yard sale? Many neighbors love practical second-hand goods.”
At first, the old man hesitated. He was deeply attached to his old things and worried that few people would come to buy them. But Doreen managed to persuade him and promised she would help sort items, make price tags, and post online ads. Finally, Mr. Bower nodded and agreed to hold a yard sale the next day.
Fifteen minutes later, Doreen hit the last few necessary keys on her keyboard with satisfaction. She created a detailed online ad for Mr. Bower’s yard sale at 9 a.m. the next day, introducing his old but well-preserved items. She also shared the news in the neighborhood group. Some neighbors showed great interest while others offered to lend a hand.

【答案】4. C 5. A 6. D 7. A
【解析】
【导语】文章主要讲述了Dec My Dorm项目为寄养青年提供宿舍用品助其公平上大学。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“hosting an annual event in July to kit out each student with sheets sets, pillows and connections to other people in the same situation.(在七月举办年度活动,为每位学生配备床单套装、枕头,并帮助他们与处境相同的人建立联系。)”以及第三段中“leaving with several bags filled with the things she needed, including many items she didn't know she would need, like dish soap.(离开时带着几袋她需要的东西,包括很多她不知道自己会需要的物品,比如洗洁精。)”可知,该项目提供的是宿舍用品。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“not knowing that dorm rooms are spartan: a desk, a chair, a bed with an oddly sized mattress — and that's it.(不知道宿舍房间是spartan的:一张桌子、一把椅子、一张配着尺寸奇怪的床垫的床——仅此而已。)”可知,宿舍只有最基本的家具,没有任何多余的东西,因此spartan意为“简朴的,基本的”。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“If they could pick their own bedding and their own blankets, they would create a room that said, 'This is who I am.(如果他们能挑选自己的床上用品和毯子,他们就能打造一个房间,传达出“这就是我”的信息。)”可知,让学生自己选择是为了给他们一种身份认同感。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中““It’s just leveling the playing field,” said Shinbane. “It’s just putting them in a room where they’re not different, and where their past doesn’t define them.”(“这只是在让竞争环境变得公平,”Shinbane说。“这只是让他们身处一个自己并不与众不同的房间,在这里他们的过去不会定义他们。”)”可知,Shinbane强调的是该项目给了学生一个公平的起点。

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. B
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍零和思维的概念、起源,阐述它带来的各类负面影响以及应对该思维的可行办法。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中的“In a zero-sum game, the total of gains and losses among the players always adds up to zero.(在零和博弈中,参与者之间的得失总和始终为零。)” 可知,零和思维的核心就是一方所得即为另一方所失。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Drawing on ideas of evolutionary psychology (进化心理学), some have argued that zero-sum thinking arose as a cognitive (认知的) adaptation within early-human ancestors (祖先) who were forced to compete over limited resources. (借鉴进化心理学的观点,一些人认为,零和思维产生于早期人类祖先身上,是一种认知适应,这些祖先被迫为有限的资源展开竞争。)”可知,零和思维是人类进化过程中形成的认知,已经根植于人类身上。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Zero-sum beliefs can also be interpersonally harmful, such as when negotiators who believe that the other side gains at their expense miss chances for win-win deals. (零和信念在人际交往方面也会产生危害,例如,谈判者认为对方的获益是以自己的损失为代价,从而错失达成双赢协议的机会。)”可知,此处列举谈判者的例子,是为了说明零和信念会带来的负面影响。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“To fight these effects, we can remember to remain mindful that there are numerous opportunities for non-zero-sum interactions with others, such as finding opportunities to exchange surpluses or favors with others.(为了抵制这些负面影响,我们应当牢记,我们和他人之间存在许许多多非零和互动的机会,例如寻找机会与他人交换富余资源或是互相施以恩惠。)”可知,作者认为非零和互动真实存在,真正的双赢是可以实现的。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:

By mid-afternoon, Mr. Bower was amazed to find his garage tidy.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Saturday morning arrived and the yard was alive with people. Neighbors came one after another, browsing the neatly arranged old items carefully. Doreen helped Mr. Bower introduce each item warmly, telling simple stories behind those old objects. Touched by the precious memories, most visitors were willing to take the items home. Much practical furniture and various tools were sold out quickly. Some neighbors even volunteered to help carry the goods, making the sale go smoothly. The warm atmosphere filled the whole yard and melted the old man’s initial worry.
By mid-afternoon, Mr. Bower was amazed to find his garage tidy. Most useless clutter was cleared away, leaving spacious and clean space for him. He felt relieved and grateful, thanking Doreen repeatedly for her thoughtful help. Doreen smiled and told him that letting go of useless things could bring a more comfortable life. From then on, Mr. Bower enjoyed his tidy garage and got along even better with warm-hearted neighbors. He finally realized that proper tidying would not erase his memories but brought him a brand-new life.
