It has been three years since Markus Hofmueller took over Bach’s Bakery (面包店) in Changsha, Hunan province. The German baker says it was one of the best decisions he has made. The bakery is well known for hiring bakers with hearing disability and is loved by many locals.
Hofmueller saw the job as a chance to learn more about management, finances, and customer service. He starts work at 7 a.m. and spends most of his day in the office, while the chefs take care of the kitchen. Would you spend nearly a hundred dollars on a doll that looks like a monster (怪物)? Well, that’s what some people are doing for this monster doll from China called Labubu. People’s fascination with doll crazes goes back generations. Just look at the Cabbage Patch Dolls in the ‘80s. People get obsessed (痴迷的) with purchasing popular dolls, whether it’s for themselves or a loved one.
Pop Mart’s Labubu dolls are no exception. The doll, which looks like a scary child with a big head, sharp teeth and big eyes wearing fuzzy footy pajamas, is sure to gain mixed reactions. But it’s the next viral sensation — people all over the Internet are going crazy over it.
The doll was designed by Hong Kong artist, Kasing Lung, around 10 years ago. Lung created three picture books inspired by Nordic mythology The book contains descriptions of characters, both good and evil, in a fairy world. He called them “The Monsters.” Labubu, “a small monster with high, pointed ears and serrated (锯齿的) teeth,” is the most outstanding character. Though she is a monster, she is kind-hearted and constantly wants to help others, but things may not go according to her plan, and she accidentally ends up making things worse.
Today, Labubu blind boxes are sold worldwide by the Beijing-based toy-maker Pop Mart, as a part of their “The Monsters” line. Almost every product inspired by Labubu and “The Monsters” line is sold out on Pop Mart’s website. The toy even led people to line up outside of malls overnight and start fights while instantly selling out, according to the LA Times.
Emily Brough, Head of Licensing for Pop Mart North America, told USA TODAY Labubu’s crazy following can be attributed to a few factors: First, Pop Mart’s blind box model and the possibility of getting a limited-edition fuel collectors’ desire for the dolls. Second, it has gone viral. Unboxings (拆盒) and collector showcases on TikTok, Xiaohongshu (Red Note), and Instagram drove massive engagement. Third, celebrities and fandoms (粉丝群体) play a major role-Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and BLACKPINK’s Lisa, have all been seen with Labubus, fueling their fans’ desires for the dolls. In the end, blind boxes are like gambling (赌博), but you still gain a toy once you open the box. Some of the blind boxes’ contents might be rarer than others, which can increase how valuable they are and how much collectors are willing to pay for them if they’re sold online.
8. Why are the dolls in the ‘80s mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To make a comparison. B. To prove a point.
C. To generate a discussion. D. To draw readers’ attention.
9. The underlined phrase may be closest in meaning to _________.
A. infectious disease B. beautiful but expensive product
C. sensitive creation D. surprising and popular success
10. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Labubu is designed by a Nordic mythologist.
B. People may go to great lengths to buy a Labubu.
C. Blind boxes are always quite expensive in price.
D. Buyers can pick the rare ones before opening the box.
11. Which is not a reason for Labubu’s popularity according to the text?
A. Business model. B. Power of social media.
C. Celebrity influence. D. People’s love for monsters.
B 9. D 10. B 11. D
根据第一段中“People’s fascination with doll crazes goes back generations. Just look at the Cabbage Patch Dolls in the ‘80s. People get obsessed (痴迷的) with purchasing popular dolls, whether it’s for themselves or a loved one. (人们对玩偶热潮的痴迷可以追溯到好几代人之前,看看80年代的椰菜娃娃就知道了。无论为自己还是心爱之人,人们都会痴迷于购买热门玩偶。)”可知,作者提到80年代的椰菜娃娃,是用过往的经典玩偶狂热案例,来证明大众对热门玩偶的痴迷是由来已久的普遍现象,以此支撑自己的观点。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“But it’s the next viral sensation — people all over the Internet are going crazy over it. (但它会成为下一个viral sensation——全网的人都在为它疯狂。)”以及后文提到的Labubu全球售罄、消费者彻夜排队抢购的内容可知,这个短语指的是Labubu成为了出人意料、广受追捧的爆红事物,和“令人惊喜且大受欢迎的成功事物”含义最为贴近。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“The toy even led people to line up outside of malls overnight and start fights while instantly selling out, according to the LA Times. (据《洛杉矶时报》报道,这款玩偶甚至让人们彻夜在商场外排队,开售即秒空,还引发了争抢。)”可知,为了买到Labubu玩偶,消费者会彻夜在商场外排队,甚至还会发生争抢,故推断出人们会竭尽全力去购买一个Labubu。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Emily Brough, Head of Licensing for Pop Mart North America, told USA TODAY Labubu’s crazy following can be attributed to a few factors: First, Pop Mart’s blind box model and the possibility of getting a limited-edition fuel collectors’ desire for the dolls. Second, it has gone viral. Unboxings and collector showcases on TikTok, Xiaohongshu (Red Note) , and Instagram drove massive engagement. Third, celebrities and fandoms play a major role-Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and BLACKPINK’s Lisa, have all been seen with Labubus, fueling their fans’ desires for the dolls.
D
As the world’s population grows and farming space becomes more and more expensive, we are quickly running out of land to grow enough crops to feed everyone. For years, we have been told that the future of farming was vertical (垂直的) , growing crops indoors in more space-efficient buildings. But this revolution has not yet come to pass, with currently only 30 hectares (公顷) of vertical farming space worldwide.
Now a new agricultural company based in San Francisco believes it has the answer to increasing this limited scale (规模) . Using unique new 3D architecture that grows crops up to two stories high in huge towers, the company believes that it can change farming. The company says it can achieve 350 times more yield from the same amount of land compared to traditional farming, and it can carry out this model almost anywhere in the world. Its aim is to grow up to two million kilograms of leafy greens on an annual basis.
To start with the crop planting process, seeds are planted in trays using automated systems, and they are provided with an exact mix of nutrients to support the initial stage of the growing process. As the plants develop rapidly, the company has the ability to adjust the amount of light, nutrients, and water each individual plant receives, allowing it to control various aspects of the final product.
Once the plants reach a specific size, robot arms transplant them to the growing wall. The company’s indoor farm features vertical grow towers, along with LED lighting, water, and nutrient systems — all designed to grow produce in an efficient manner.
After the crops are fully grown, they are first picked and then sorted by using a high-tech sorting machine. This machine uses blue light to check the crops for damaged leaves, and only after this check are the crops sent off for packing.
12. What is the present situation of vertical farming?
A. Small-scale. B. High-yield. C. High-cost. D. Fast-expanding.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The challenge of the vertical farm. B. The development of the new company.
C. The introduction of the vertical farm model. D. The background of traditional farming’s yield.
14. Which word can best describe the company’s technology?
A. Simple. B. Advanced. C. Eco-friendly. D. Widespread.
15. What may be the best title of the text?
A. The Future of Agriculture. B. Technology Brings High Yield.
C. Why We Should Grow Crops Vertically. D. Vertical Farming: A Sustainable Solution.
A 13. C 14. B 15. D

Andy Warhol said, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” Soon, the phrase “fifteen minutes of fame” became a standard promise. Like most people, I never really expected to have even a few seconds of many people’s wonderful attention. And then it happened.
We were aboard the big ship, the National Geographic Explorer, on a trip to Antarctica. The ship carried many passengers and crew members. Excitement filled the air as we witnessed huge pieces of ice and snow covered mountains.
Motor-driven boats took us across the frozen sea so we could climb snowy mountain ranges and watch unique animals. In the following days, we relaxed in the beautiful White Continent. Then one morning, we saw a sign announcing an open invitation to all passengers, “Polar Plunge (跳水) at 12:30. You’re welcome to participate in the wonderful and meaningful event for fun, physical health, charity and also courage building.”
My husband and I were surprised at the sign. His face brightened, showing he wanted to have a try, but I had panic. Many reasons for not doing such a silly act clicked through my mind. “No way,” I said. “For starters, we’re a little too old. The water is freezing. Heights terrify me. In simple language, I’m a coward.”
My words didn’t weaken my husband’s enthusiasm. “Moreover,” I continued,“it means I’d have to wear a swimsuit in public with many people staring at my fat, old body. “We’ll never have another chance,” he just smiled, “and it’s for charity how meaningful that is!” My determination gradually weakened. My hearty “No way” gave way to a weak “Maybe”. Finally, I gathered my courage and said, “Okay. Let’s go for it.”
After medical workers carefully checked our physical condition, we wore our swimsuits, and gathered at the diving board with the other participants. A brave teen wished to be first in line. The remaining few ranged in age from energetic young people to middle-aged adults joking and laughing. My husband and I were visibly the ancient, senior citizens of the group. Volunteers stayed on the lifeboats below to ensure all participants’ safety.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
We waited for our turn to come.

Then, my husband and I rushed to float to the surface.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We waited for our turn to come. The teen ahead of us jumped with a whoop, splashing into the icy water like a fearless seal. My knees knocked as I saw the dark, freezing sea below. "You can do this," my husband whispered and squeezed my hand tightly. When our names were called, I shuffled to the edge, legs shaking. With a deep breath, I imitated the teen’s leap, arms outstretched. The instant I left the board, time seemed to freeze — then the shock of ice hit me like a thousand needles.
Then, my husband and I rushed to float to the surface. Gasping for air, I flailed toward the lifeboat, my skin burning from the cold. Volunteers hauled us onto the deck, wrapping us in warm towels as cheers erupted around us. "You did it!" someone shouted. I looked at my husband, his face red from the chill but grinning widely. Suddenly I realized the plunge wasn’t about age or appearance, but about seizing adventure. As Andy Warhol’s words echoed in my mind, I smiled, feeling famous not for 15 minutes, but for a lifetime of courage.

In the beginning, he worked more in the kitchen, but later focused on building strong relationships within the team. He believes that good communication and teamwork are key to success.
“The employees are the heart of the bakery,” he says. “Watching them grow and improve their skills makes me happiest.” He even learns the sign language so he can better communicate with his team. He says that hearing-impaired bakers are especially good at noticing details others might miss, which helps ensure high bread quality.
Hofmueller took over the bakery in 2022 from its former German owners, who returned home after 11 years. He followed his heart, driven by his love for baking and his interest in helping people with disabilities.
He and his wife have introduced new flavors and opened a WeChat mini-program. The bakery has become a friendly place for locals and foreigners to meet. During Thanksgiving, he even taught American customers some sign language.
Hofmueller hopes to keep training more people and work with local vocational (职业的) schools. “I don’t know what the future holds, but I believe good things will come as I follow my heart,” he says.

B. People may go to great lengths to buy a Labubu.

11. Which is not a reason for Labubu’s popularity according to the text?
A. Business model. B. Power of social media.

C. Why We Should Grow Crops Vertically. D. Vertical Farming: A Sustainable Solution.
