Book towns around the world
Hay-on-Wye
The booktown movement was started in the 1960s by Hay resident Richard Booth, who had the idea to promote his economically struggling town in Wales. Then he made it a destination for book lovers and collectors. In addition to its many bookstores, the town holds the annual Hay Festival which attracts more tourists. The festival has expanded over the years to include musical performances, film previews and art exhibitions.
Wigtown
Wigtown, Scotland, has its own literary festival, which is held each autumn. And there's also another event which is designed to target children. And tourists have taken an interest in Wigtown's bird watching, hiking and sightseeing opportunities in addition to the books and cultural events. Its effort to become a destination for book lovers began when it earned the right to call itself Scotland's National Book Town in the late 1990s.
Paju Book City
The first plans for Paju Book City were created in 1989 by a group of publishers with the help of the South Korean government. It also has exhibit spaces and art galleries. One of Paju's highlights is the Forest of Wisdom that is open all day. It's a library with donated books that anyone can look through.
Mundal
First operated in 1995, the book town in Vestland, Norway is open from May to mid-September every year. During this time, tourists can also explore fjords(峡湾)by boat, have a trip to the nearby delta (a great place for bird-watchers) and even try to swim in the cold glacial(冰川的) waters. Books are sold in so-called book cafes and in converted(改建的)boat houses, barns and even in a bus stop.

Mark felt that it was time for him, to take part in his community, so he went to the neighborhood meeting after work. The area’s city councilwoman (女议员) was leading a discussion about how the quality of life was decreasing. The neighborhood faced many problems.
Mark looked at the charts taped to the walls. There were charts for parking problems, crime, and for problems in vacant buildings. People were supposed to suggest solutions to the councilwoman.
It was too much for Mark. “The problems are too big,” he thought. He turned to the man next to him and said, “I think this is a waste of my time. Nothing I could do would make a difference here.”
Mark thought some more on his way to the bus stop. “People should just take care of themselves,” he decided. “That’s enough to do. I can’t take on all the problems of the world.”
As he neared the bus stop, Mark saw a woman carrying a grocery bag and a baby. She was trying to unlock her car, but she didn’t have a free hand. As Mark got closer, her other child, a little boy, suddenly darted into the street. The woman tried to reach for him, but as she moved, her bag shifted and the groceries started to fall out. Mark ran to take the boy’s arm and led him back to his mother. Then he picked up the groceries while the woman smiled in relief. ‘‘Thanks!” she said. “You’ve got great timing!”
“Just being neighborly,” Mark said. As he rode home, he glanced at the walls of the bus. On one of them was “Small acts of kindness add up.” Mark smiled and thought, “Maybe that’s a good place to start.”

Have you ever had the feeling that you can't think when there is too much noise around? Did you ever think a fish could experience that feeling too? A recent paper published in Science titled "Soundscape (声景)of the Anthropocene Oceans", combined over 10, 000 scientific papers, confirming that undersea life knows that exact same feeling, more often than not. Anthropogenic(人为的)ocean noise, also known as underwater noise pollution, has created a dramatic impact on sea life due to "human-caused" activity within and neighboring our oceans.
Disney Pixar's animated film Finding Nemo educated us about the ocean, and specifically within the ordinary world of a clown fish. A fact many may not know is that clown fish spend the first part of their lives as larvae, drifting with the current of the ocean until they become strong enough to swim against it. Once they are powerful and strong, they head home in sheltered coral reefs(暗礁). There is only one drawback the fish can't physically see the reef, but they can hear it. The only problem is, if they can't hear it, will they ever make it home?
Our anthropogenic ocean noise, such as cargo ships, ship and boat propellers, surfing, deep sea mining, etc. are causing destruction of sea life. According to Time, sound is the sensory signal that travels the farthest through the ocean. Anthropogenic noise drowns out the natural soundscapes, putting marine (海洋的)life under immense stress. Altogether, this stress then affects their general health, disrupts their behavior, physiology(生理机能), reproduction and, in extreme cases, causes death. Marine life can adapt to noise pollution, however, only if they can escape it. This only causes further complications of straying (使偏离)species from their traditional breeding regions or separating them from their families.
Now, what if we told you there is already a solution? Multiple remedies, ideas and designs are currently in the works or already exist to eliminate and change the damage of anthropogenic ocean noise. As Time explains, from wind-powered ships to noise-reducing propellers(螺旋桨), floating wind turbines (发电机)and "bubble curtains" that quieten construction noise, the solutions are already available and in some cases, cost-effective. The authors of the paper hope it will catch the attention of policymakers, who historically speaking, have ignored the matter still to this day. Of all the challenges ocean creatures are battling, luckily sound pollution is the easiest compromise humans can make. Once the noise has decreased, marine life will be able to better manage everything else it is up against.
28. What is the paper "Soundscape of the Anthropocene Oceans" mainly about?
A. An analysis of sound travels in the ocean.
B. Discussions about different categories of ocean pollution.
C. Explorations of the effects of noise pollution on sea life.
D. Researches on sea animals' communication.
29. The clown fish in paragraph 2 is mentioned to .
A. show their life environment
B. present readers their terrible living conditions
C. introduce an animated film Finding Nemo
D. stress the importance of natural soundscapes to sea life
30. Which of the following words can replace the underlined word "disrupts" in para3?
A. disturbs B. dislikes C. disagrees D. disapproves
31. Which of the following solutions is already available to reduce underwater noise pollution according to paragraph 4?
A. The management of ship transport. B. The limitation of human activities.
C. The application of noise control techniques. D. The revision of relevant laws.
D
It is a question we often wonder, especially as we age: How many years do I have left? Well, thanks to Brazilian doctor Claudio Gil Araujo, there is now a simple test you can perform right at home in just a few seconds that could predict how many years you have left to live, according to “Discover”.
Begin by standing straight in the middle of a room. Without using your arms or hands, carefully squat (蹲) into a cross-legged sitting position. Once you are comfortable, attempt to stand back up from the sitting position again, without using your arms or hands for help. The test is scored on a point scale between 1 and 10 (5 points for sitting, 5 more points for standing back up). Each time you use an arm or a hand for help in balancing during the test, you subtract (减去) one point from 10 possible points and half a point is subtracted each time you lose your balance.
It seems like a pretty simple test of training, but Araujo found that it could predict life expectancy. He tested it on more than 2,000 of his patients aged 51 to 80, and found that people who scored less than 8 points on the test were twice as likely to die within the next six years. Those who scored three points or less were five times more likely to die within that same time. Overall, each point achieved in the test meant a 21-percent reduction in mortality (死亡率).
Araujo’s study was only performed on patients older than 50, so the results won’t mean the same thing for younger ones taking the test. But without considering your age, the test should provide a useful benchmark (基准) for your health. If you are younger than 50 and have trouble with the test, it ought to be a wake-up call. The good news is that the younger you are, the more time you have to get into better shape.
32. How many points will Peter get if he just achieved the cross-legged sitting position in the test perfectly?
A. 3 points. B. 5 points. C. 6 points. D. 9 points.
33. What is the important part of Claudio Gil Araujo’s test if people want to get a high score?
A. Stand straight enough in the right middle of a room.
B. Squat into a cross-legged sitting position and keep the action.
C. Try to keep their balance without using arms or hands for help.
D. Try to stand back up from the sitting position as soon as possible.
34. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The test is only suitable for people who are older than 50 years old.
B. The test has the same benchmark upon old people and young people.
C. Younger people can also use the test to be a benchmark for their health.
D. Older people should take the test seriously to predict the life expectancy.
35. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. The Younger to Do the Test, the Longer to Live
B. The Older to Do the Test, the Longer to Live
C. A Test to Tell Your Life Expectancy
D. A Magic Test to Extend Life

Alex was very excited because the New Year Eve was approaching. Suddenly, he saw his grandfather sitting alone looking very unhappy.
Alex went to him and asked, “Grandpa, why are you sitting alone? Is there anything wrong with you?”
His grandfather replied, “No, I am fine. I just feel like sitting alone.”
“Grandpa, you know the New Year is near, so are you preparing for it?” asked Alex excitedly.
“No dear, I am not. With the passage of time, the world has completely changed and I don’t see any point in celebrating the world I see today,” answered his grandfather disappointedly.
“I know something is wrong with you and you are not telling me. Please tell me what the problem is.” Alex said.
“I feel I am a stranger in the world I am living in. It is not the same as I have known. Now everyone is busy with their own work. Your father is busy with business, your brother is busy on the computer, your sister is busy studying abroad and your mum is busy with household work. I don’t know how to pass my days,” said his grandfather sadly.
“Grandpa, you have me!” said Alex.
His grandfather smiled and said, “Yeah, you are here, but what about others? In our days, we had a fixed time each day when the whole family sat together and talked, shared problems and laughed together.”
That night Alex thought about what his grandfather had said and an idea flashed through his mind. He decided to have a surprise New Year party at his own home and make everyone come together that day. As New Year’s Eve got nearer, Alex got busy preparing for the party. He kept it a secret from his grandfather and asked everyone not to let him know about it in order to surprise him.
