Is our life better than before?
Twenty years ago, life was very different from today. People lived in small houses and walked or rode bikes to work. Children played outside with friends after school. Families usually ate dinner together.
Today, life is faster and busier. Many families have moved to bigger flats or houses. People drive cars or take buses, but some still ride bikes—especially on their way to work. Children now spend more time on phones and computers, and many of them don’t know their neighbours very well.
Is modern life better? The answer is not simple. Some changes have made our lives more comfortable. We have better medical care, longer holidays, and more ways to learn. But other changes have made us feel more stressed and more alone.
In fact, every change has two sides. The same new road that helps us reach the city faster also cuts through farmland. The phone lets us talk to friends far away, but it also stops us from talking to people nearby. So the question is not whether life is “better”, but how we use each change.
36.What was children’s life like twenty years ago?
A.They had no friends.
B.They played outside with friends after school.
C.They played on phones.
D.They lived far from school.
37.What does the writer think of modern life?
A.It’s clearly better.
B.It’s clearly worse.
C.We can’t say it’s better or worse simply.
D.The writer doesn’t care.
38.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The new road. B.The phone. C.The change. D.The city.
39.What is the writer’s main idea?
A.We should not change our life.
B.Modern life is better than before in every way.
C.Every change has two sides; how we use it matters.
D.Twenty years ago, life was perfect.
40.In which part of a newspaper would you most probably read this passage?
A.Sports. B.Travel. C.Opinion (观点). D.Weather report.

Now, thanks to science and technology, life becomes much more convenient. People live in bright new flats. High‑speed railways and highways make travelling easier. Smart phones and e‑payment change people’s daily lives. Many people have succeeded in developing new high‑tech products. However, these changes also bring some new problems. For example, cutting down too many trees causes sand‑storms and the growing population brings housing and water shortages.
We can’t stop changes, but we should face these new problems bravely. While we enjoy the advantages of development, we should also try to protect our environment.

1.B
to到;with和;for为了;of……的。keep in touch with sb.
quite a lot of许多(后面必须接名词);quite a lot很大程度/非常(作副词短语,修饰动词);lot of格式错误;a lots格式错误。 quite a lot可作副词短语,意为“很多”,修饰动词;quite a lot of后需接名词;lot of和a lots为错误表达。 应填quite a lot。
4.B
since自从;for达;in在……里面;at在。根据“We haven’t seen each other”可知句子是现在完成时,ages表示“很久”,是一段时间,现在完成时中表示持续的一段时间用介词for,固定搭配for ages意为“很久”。
5.B
6.A
根据“Have you...been...”可知,此处是一般疑问句询问经历,第一空应用ever;根据“No, I haven’t been there...”
7.A
took花费(主语为事/物,常用it作形式主语);cost花费(主语为物,通常表示价格或代价);spent花费(“sb. spend+时间/金钱+(in) doing sth.”);paid支付(“sb. pay+金钱+for sth.”)。句式“It+takes/took+sb.+时间 + to do sth.”表示“某人花时间做某事”,“in the old days”为过去时间状语,故用过去式took。
8.A
used to be过去曾经有;was used to be错误搭配;used to being错误搭配;was used to being习惯于……。根据“but now it has disappeared”可知,此处指过去存在但现在不存在了,There used to be为固定搭配,意为“过去曾有”,符合语境。应填used to be。
9.A
根据时间状语“over the last fifteen years”可知,句子应用现在完成时,排除C项;take place意为“发生”,是不及物动词短语,没有被动语态,排除B、D项。
10.A
Thanks for因……而感谢;Thanks to多亏,由于;Because因为;Since既然,自从。空格后的“the government’s support”是名词短语,而Because和Since作为连词后面需要接完整的句子,因此排除C、D选项。
应填have built。
13.B
根据问句“Where is your father?”可知父亲不在说话地点,且答语“He will come back in three days.”
14.A
16.B 17.C 18.B 19.A 20.A 21.C 22.C 23.B 24.D 25.A 26.B 27.D 28.C 29.A 30.D
31.B 32.B 33.C 34.C 35.A

38.根据文章第四段划线词所在句“The phone lets us talk to friends far away,…”
