To build good relationships with people from other cultures, it is necessary to learn how to communicate well with them. Here are some tips that can help you learn from people from other cultures and share your culture with them.
A little knowledge can go a long way. If you have time before meeting with someone from another culture, try to take time to learn the basic dos and don’ts of that culture. You can find information about this from the Internet easily.
If you could not understand someone or think that he or she did not understand you, say something about it. If you think you did not understand what someone meant, try saying something like, “I’m not sure I understood you. Could we go over that again?” It’s usually better to be upfront (坦率的) than to let a problem in communication go undressed, since there may be bigger problems later.
Each culture has its own values, beliefs, and prejudice(偏见). Signs of these may come out when communicating with people from other cultures. Basic communication, however, is not the time to judge people based on these differences. Instead, respect(尊重) them for what they are. You may even learn something new.
Communicating with people from other cultures can also have its difficulties. Expect that not everything will come out quite right or be fully understood. Be patient with others, and ask them to be patient with you, too.
Using non-standard language improperly can make you hard to understand. Since a language’s slang(俚语) is highly dependent on context(语境), it is best not to use it unless you are quite sure you know how to use it properly.
11. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. Learn about the culture. B. Be respectful. C. Be patient. D. Use slang properly.
12. What will happen if we are not upfront?
A. We will hate each other. B. Our parents will be angry with us.
C. Problems will be bigger later. D. We will learn something new.
13. What’s the structure(结构) of the text?(Paragraph 1=①)
A. B. C. D.
14. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The importance of cultures B. How to greet each other
C. The difficulties in communication D. How to communicate well with people from other cultures
15. Which part of the newspaper is the text probably from?
A. News. B. Health. C. Culture. D. Sports.
D
Science shows why we trust people who are confident. Imagine this: one person tells a lie confidently, while another says something true in a hesitant voice. Which person would you trust?
According to British scientist Dean Burnett, humans are far more likely to believe information expressed confidently by a confident person or in some other ways using confident language.
“Humans trusting confident people over those who are more uncertain is a known thing,” wrote Burnett for Science Focus magazine.” When two people are trying to make a decision but each person says different things, confidently expressed arguments (论点) are seen as passing on better information, which decides the decision.”
Why is this the case? As Burnett said, humans are social animals. In our ancient past, most of our information about the world came from our tribe (部落), in other words, the people around us. So, if ancient humans heard someone confidently saying “There’s a tiger coming”, believing what that person said could save our lives.
On a more personal level, we use our own experiences to understand what other people do and say. That’s how our brain works. When we are confident, it’s for good reason. Therefore, we believe that when someone else is being confident, they must have good reason, too.
However, we need to realize that confidently expressed information may be more persuasive (有说服力的), but that doesn’t mean it’s correct. As Burnett wrote, we are living in a more and more different world. Trusting very confident people without checking the facts can lead to “unexpected results”.
16. Which of the following has the same meaning as the underlined word “hesitant”?
A. Confident. B. Excited. C. Active. D. Uncertain.
17. How did the writer start this passage?
A. By asking a question. B. By listing the facts.
C. By telling a story. D. By offering a suggestion.
18. Which of the following persons will people be most likely to trust?
A. The person who is from the tribe.
B. The person who says something in a hesitant voice.
C. The person who tells a lie confidently.
D. The person who says something true uncertainly.
19. What can be learned from this passage?
A. Confidently expressing all kinds of information is totally correct.
B. We should trust every confident people without checking the facts.
C. We use our own experiences to understand what other people do and say.
D. Confidently expressed arguments are seen as passing on worse information.
20. What’s the main purpose of this passage?
A. To advise people to tell lies confidently.
B. To ask people to live in the tribe around us.
C. To explain why we trust people who are confident.
D. To show why people make friends with confident people.

例文
How to be a better teenager?
Hello, everyone! Today I’d like to share my ideas about how to be a better teenager.
First, we should develop healthy living habits. We should go to bed early and get up early, keep doing exercise every day and avoid eating too much junk food, which is bad for our health. Second, we need to make clear plans for our study and take action actively. Third, be kind to others and help them when they are in trouble. Besides, it’s important to take up hobbies, such as reading or playing sports. Joining volunteer activities is also a good way to grow. What’s more, just as the ancient saying tells us, we should often check what we have done and find our shortcomings to improve. Let’s work hard to become better!
Thank you!
