You don’t show your secret personality when you’re awake because you can control yourself, but when you’re asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. On a normal night, of course, you often change your sleeping positions. The important position that best shows your secret personality is the one that you go to sleep in. If you go to sleep on your back, you’re a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by new ideas. You don’t like to make people unhappy, so you never express your real feelings. You’re quite shy and you aren’t very confident. If you sleep on your stomach, you are a person who likes to keep secrets. You worry a lot and you’re always easily becoming sad. You never want to change your ideas, but you are happy with your life the way it is. You usually live for today not for tomorrow. If you sleep curled up, you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and often protect yourself from being hurt, so you are very defensive. You’re shy and you don’t usually like meeting people. You like to be on your own. If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced personality. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You’re usually careful. You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel worried, but you don’t often get unhappy. You always say what you think, even if it makes people angry. 28. When does the sleeping position best show your secret personality? A. In the daytime. B. At night. C. At the beginning of sleep. D. During the deep sleep. 29. Tina hardly tells her secrets to her friends. She probably goes to sleep ________. A. On her stomach B. Changing positions will cause sleeping problems. D. Sleeping positions show people’s secret personalities. C The bell rang, and I rushed to the library for Writing Club. Miss Lisa, our leader, announced that we would share our stories with a critique partner. My partner was Penny. I handed her my story, nervous about my spelling and grammar. Penny seemed worried, too, as she gave me her story. I read it and was amazed-it was a heartwarming tale about a stray dog named Sunny who saved a family from a flood. “Wow, great story,” I told her. “I don’t have any suggestions. It’s perfect!” “Yours too,” she said ________. She didn’t even look at me as she passed mine back. “OK, everyone, our time is up for today,” said Miss Lisa. “See you next week!” Penny looked relieved. She jumped up and caught her backpack and hurried out of the library. I noticed a book named Sunny the Brave under the table. It must have fallen out of Penny’s bag. The description matched her story exactly. She had copied it. I thought about telling Miss Lisa, but she had already left. Outside of the school, I noticed Penny sitting on a bench. “You dropped this,” I held out the book. She looked up, tears in her eyes. All of a sudden, I wasn’t angry any more. I remembered that my job as her critique partner was to give helpful feedback, not to make her feel bad. But what should I say? “I thought I’d love writing club, but I’m terrible at it,” she said. “I never have a single idea for a story.” “What if we worked on a story together? Well, I have ideas, but my sentences aren’t always the best. I wish I could write perfectly like you do,” I said. “I’d rather have ideas than write perfect sentences,” Penny said. “I did have one new idea,” I said. “What if we worked on a story together? I bet we could come up with something great.” “Can we do that?” she asked. She looked hopeful. “Let’s talk to Miss Lisa,” I said. “She loves it when writers are creative.” “Maybe we can write about two friends,” she said. “And one has a big problem.” “And they work together to solve it,” I added. “And everything ends up better than they could have imagined,” she said. “Now that’s a great idea!” I said. 31. Which words are the most suitable for ________? A. quietly and unclearly B. loudly and confidently C. quietly but uninterestedly D. loudly but carelessly. 32. The two girls will create their new story alone. B. Penny will be the best word master in the class. C. The two girls will not worry about their stories. D. The writer will tell Miss Lisa about Penny’s copying. D Have you ever lost yourself in doing something so deeply that you forget the time slipping by? Have you ever been so focused on the task that you don’t even notice you’re hungry or thirsty? Everything around you—from the ringing of phones to the people passing by—seems to be away. Most of us have had this experience at one time or another, whether it’s while practicing basketball drills, drawing in a sketchbook, or even organizing a collection of cards. This special state of mind is called “flow”. When it happens, we completely pay attention to what we are doing. We feel energetic, even excited about what we are doing. For example, you might spend a whole hour fixing the lines and shadows of a drawing over and over. Then you suddenly realize you missed your favorite after-school show—but you don’t even care, because that time when you hold the brush and focus on drawing felt really great. The idea of flow was introduced and first studied by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. According to his discovery, whether flow happens depends on the difficulty of the challenge and our skill levels. For example, if the task is low in challenge and doesn’t require a lot of skills, we probably feel bored with it. But facing a challenging task without the required skills could easily cause worry. He finally drew the conclusion that when the challenge is difficult and we believe we have enough skills, flow happens. During flow, people can work faster and better. For example, artists said that they could create more works easily “without putting in much work” in the flow state. Flow can also make people more curious and creative because they have to look for new challenges and information to keep the state. Flow often happens during creative activities and sports activities. But flow states aren’t just something experienced by artists, writers or sportspeople. Flow can happen anytime a person is deeply lost in a task, including during learning activities. Many people want to achieve flow more often in their daily lives. While doing a task, having clear plans, adding something challenging and giving and receiving feedback in time can help achieve flow. It’s more difficult to achieve flow if people’s attention is distracted, so it’s necessary that smartphones, TV and other distractions get turned off. 34. The writer asked two “Have you ever...” questions at the beginning to ________. A. share personal experiences B. answer the question C. list everyday activities D. introduce a subject 35. According to Csikszentmihalyi’s study, which diagram (示意图) shows the flow state? A. B. C. D. 36. The following sentence can best be put at the end of ________. With flow, people have greater levels of happiness and achievement in their activities. A. Paragraph 2 B. Paragraph 3 C. Paragraph 4 D. Paragraph 5 37. Which is the best title for this passage? A. These usually try to show the things that are important in life, such as love, beauty and family. The most common things, from paper to clay to bamboo, are turned into objects of beauty. According to Chinese history, sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming. He sent them out to ask for help when in trouble. Today, sky lanterns are used at festivals and other celebrations. They are made of bamboo and covered with paper. When the lanterns are lit, they slowly rise into the air like small hot-air balloons for all to see. They are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes. Paper cutting has been around for over 1,500 years. Paper cutting sounds very easy but it can be difficult to do. The paper, usually red, is folded before it is cut with scissors. The most common pictures are flowers, animals, and things about Chinese history. During the Spring Festival, they are put on windows, doors and walls as symbols of wishes for good luck and a happy new year. Chinese clay art is famous because the clay pieces are so small but they look very real. The pieces are usually cute children or lively characters from a Chinese fairy tale or historical story. The pieces are carefully shaped by hand from a very special kind of clay and then allowed to air-dry. After drying, they are fired at a very high heat. They are then polished (抛光) and painted. It takes several weeks to complete everything. These small pieces of clay art show the love that all Chinese people have for life and beauty. 58.
