Van Gogh began drawing when he was very young. He quickly became an expert at painting. He also travelled a great deal and worked in different cities. Studying art in France had a big influence on him. He believed that painting would lose some of its importance if artists stopped trying new methods. Therefore, he became interested in creating new styles of art that mixed bright colours with powerful brushwork.
