Free talk Two painting worlds show two different cultures. Let’s explore their differences and beauty in this lesson. Sandy is reading a magazine article about the differences between Chinese and Western paintings. Paintings in the East and West In general, there are some differences between Chinese and Western paintings. ● Traditional Chinese paintings are usually done with black and coloured ink, while many Western paintings often use more colourful oil paints. ● Traditional Chinese paintings may not require a background, and the empty space in the painting leaves room for imagination. Western paintings often place their subject in a setting with little empty space. ● Western paintings often look as close to the real subjects as possible, but traditional Chinese paintings pay more attention to the spirit of the subject.
