They forgot to look and listen before they cross the road. How can we lessen (减少) traffic accidents? All of us must obey the traffic rules. For the drivers, they shouldn’t drive too fast. If they drive too fast, it will be very difficult to stop the cars in a very short time. For the pedestrians (行人), it’s very important to be careful when they are walking on the road. Therefore, when we walk across the road, we must try to walk along the pavements. We must stop and look both ways before crossing the road. Look left first, next look right, then look left again. Only when we are sure that the road is clear, we can cross it. The right way to cross the road is to walk quickly. It’s not safe to run. If people run across the road, they may fall down. C There was magic in the secret garden that spring and summer. At first, everything turned green. Then the green changed to colours—blue, purple and red. There were flowers everywhere. Dickon and Mary’s seeds(种子) grew. And the roses—the roses! From small buds they grew into large flowers and filled the air with their perfume. Colin saw it all. He watched the changes as they happened. Dickon pushed his wheelchair to the garden every morning and he spent the day there. Sometimes Colin sat on the grass watching the insects. One day, he watched a mole(鼹鼠) digging a hole. He learnt a lot of things about the ways of these insects and animals. And Dickon taught him about the animals in the wood. One morning, the children were in the secret garden as usual. When Ben Weatherstaff arrived, Colin said, “Good morning, Ben Weatherstaff. I want you and Dickon and Mary to listen to me because I'm going to tell you something very important.” “Yes,sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff. “I’m going to do a scientific experiment.” he said. “When I grow up, I’m going to make scientific discoveries about magic and I’m going to start with this experiment. Do you understand?” “Yes,sir!” said Ben Weatherstaff, but he didn’t really understand. “I believe that there is magic in everything,” continued Colin. “Dickon knows some magic. He charms animals and people. Mary also knows a bit of magic because she was born in India. There’s magic in the garden too. I’m going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong. I’m going to say—Magic is in me! And you must all say it too. That is my experiment. Are you going to help, Ben Weatherstaff?” “Yes,sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff. They sat down in a circle. The crow, the fox, the squirrels and the lamb were very curious. “Now, let’s begin,” Colin said, and they all started chanting(吟唱). “Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us.” Then Colin stood up and walked round the garden. He went in front with Dickon on one side and Mary on the other. Ben Weatherstaff walked behind. Colin walked a bit then rested. Then he walked again and rested again. At first,he held Dickon’s arm. Then he walked a few steps alone. “I can walk! The magic worked!” he cried. “What is the doctor going to say?” asked Mary. “Nothing,” Colin answered. “Because we aren’t going to tell him. No one must know that I can walk and run. It’s a surprise for my father when he comes back to Misselthwaite.” “He’s going to think it’s a dream.” said Mary. —Adapted from The Secret Garden 51. D Do you want to know how and why a fall leaf changes color? We first have to understand what leaves are and what they do. Leaves are the world’s food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots and take CO2 from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and CO2 into glucose(葡萄糖), a kind of sugar. Plants use it as food for energy and growing. A chemical called “chlorophyll” in the leaves gives plants their green colour. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter, and trees “know” to begin getting ready for winter. [来源:学&科&网] During winter, there is not enough sunlight or water. Trees rest during this time and live on the food they store during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. As the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves. The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in autumn. In some trees, like maples(枫树), sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn the glucose in the leaves into a red colour. And we can enjoy the beautiful red leaves during autumn. 54.Which should be in the box? sunlight+ +CO2 glucose A. air B. sugar C. water D. wind 55.The underlined word “chlorophyll” means __________. It has a history of over 1,000 years in China. In early Tang Dynasty, it was introduced to Japan and Korea, so it was called the “Tang Umbrella”. Later oil paper umbrellas were introduced to other Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, and each had its own style. However, as steel-ribbed umbrellas appeared in the last century, the hand-made oil paper umbrellas became less used in daily life. Yuhang in Hangzhou is known for making oil paper umbrellas for more than 230 years. They are mainly made of skin paper, bamboo and Tung oil. They need to take more than 70 steps to make, including making bamboo ribs, pesting paper and painting patterns (图案). It takes at least a week to make such an umbrella. In 2008, these umbrellas were added to Intangible Cultural Heritage List of China. A young man called Liu Weixue learned the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas from his grandfather. “I want to bring the art to life,” Liu said. He improved the umbrellas to win the hearts of young people. As the traditional paper was easy to break, he started to use a kind of thicker paper. In a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed for 1,000 times without breaking. He used a kind of lighter bamboo to make the umbrellas weigh less. Now Liu hopes the art can be passed on. He goes to local schools to teach students. He also goes to events in different places to introduce the art. 回答下面问题,每题答案不超过10个单词。 1.How many Asian countries were Chinese oil paper umbrellas introduced to? 2.Which place in China is known for making oil paper umbrellas? 3.How long does it take to make an oil paper umbrella? 4.Why did Liu Weixue learn this traditional art? 5.What do you think of Liu Weixue? Life is full of ________ Life will be wonderful with all kinds of ________.
