“It was written in some sense,” Sophie Blake, a physics professor, would end up in observational cosmology — the study of the origin and development of the universe using specialized telescopes. “I’m not going to lie. My father was a physicist. My mother’s an astronomer. But no kid wants to be like their parents,” she jokes, semi-seriously.
Blake always enjoyed building things like a child engineer. It wasn’t unusual for her to experiment with her father’s research equipment. She thanks, in part, her short attention period for her inquisitiveness, “I am always looking for something.”
For the last few years, Blake has been searching for signs of the universe’s early existence — from the birth of the first stars to the “cosmic (宇宙的) dark ages” — and she’s building her own equipment to explore beyond the known universe, focusing on its distant past with novel radio technology. Since 2017, Blake and her team have been engineering and planting radio telescopes in two of the Earth’s most remote (and quietest) locations for the best shot at hearing the earliest voice of the universe.
Initially, Blake planned a PhD in particle (粒子) physics but switched direction after a visit to a lab with messy equipment and tools everywhere at the California Institute of Technology. “I didn’t know about observational cosmology then but thought, ‘Whatever this is, I want to do that.’”
She spent a year at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, after conducting experiments of a balloon-borne microwave telescope launched from McMurdo. “That really inspired my love for remote places,” she said.
Eventually, she wanted to engineer her own instruments. After her year at the South Pole, she joined the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. At that time, the site decision was made for the largest radio telescope group on Earth.
“This was also a leap of faith because I really couldn’t continue the work I was doing before.” Blake recalls. “I had never done radio before but I thought, ‘Let me give this a try and see how it goes.’”
4. What can we infer from Blake’s joke in paragraph 1?
A. She follows in her parents’ footsteps. B. She develops an interest in telescopes.
C. She lies about her parents’ professions. D. She lives up to her parents’ expectations.
5. What does the underlined word “inquisitiveness” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Talent. B. Courage. C. Curiosity. D. Intelligence.
6. What stimulated Blake’s passion for distant places?
A. Her visit to a lab in a university. B. Her wish to build her own equipment.
C. Her faith in hearing the cosmic sound. D. Her experience at a South Pole Station.
7. Which of the following best describes Blake?
A. Confident and caring. B. Generous and optimistic.
C. Modest and open-minded. D. Adventurous and determined.
A 5. C 6. D 7. D

根据第一段““It was written in some sense,” Sophie Blake, a physics professor, would end up in observational cosmology—the study of the origin and development of the universe using specialized telescopes. “I’m not going to lie. My father was a physicist. My mother’s an astronomer. But no kid wants to be like their parents,” she jokes, semi-seriously.(物理学教授索菲·布莱克最终选择了观测宇宙学——用专门的望远镜研究宇宙的起源和发展——“从某种意义上说,它是写出来的。”“我不想撒谎。我父亲是个物理学家。我妈妈是天文学家。但没有孩子想要像他们的父母一样,”她半严肃地开玩笑说)”可知,布莱克最终还是继承了父母的事业,成为了宇宙学家。故选A。
根据第五段“She spent a year at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, after conducting experiments of a balloon-borne microwave telescope launched from McMurdo. “That really inspired my love for remote places,” she said.(她在阿蒙森-斯科特南极站呆了一年,在那里进行了从麦克默多发射的气球载微波望远镜的实验。“这真的激发了我对偏远地区的热爱,”她说)”可知,在南极站的经历激发了布莱克对远方的热情。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““I didn’t know about observational cosmology then but thought, ‘Whatever this is, I want to do that.’”(“当时我还不知道观测宇宙学,但我想,‘不管这是什么,我都想做。’”)”可知,Blake 是一个坚决果断的人;根据最后一段““I had never done radio before but I thought, ‘Let me give this a try and see how it goes.’”(“我以前从来没有做过广播,但我想,‘让我试一试,看看会怎么样。’”)”

While safety improvements might have been made to our streets in recent years, transport studies also show declines in pedestrian (行人) mobility, especially among young children. Many parents say there’s too much traffic on the roads for their children to walk safely to school, so they pack them into the car instead.
Dutch authors Thalia Verkade and Marco te Brömmelstroet are bothered by facts like these. In their new book Movement: How to Take Back Our Streets and Transform Our Lives, they call for a rethink of our streets and the role they play in our lives.
Life on city streets started to change decades ago. Whole neighbourhoods were destroyed to make way for new road networks and kids had to play elsewhere. Some communities fought back. Most famously, a Canadian journalist who had moved her family to Manhattan in the early 1950s led a campaign to stop the destruction of her local park. Describing her alarm at its proposed replacement with an expressway, Jane Jacobs called on her mayor (市长) to champion “New York as a decent place to live, and not just rush through.” Similar campaigns occurred in Australia in the late 1960s and 1970s as well.
Although these campaigns were widespread, the reality is that the majority of the western cities were completely redesigned around the needs of the motor car. The number of cars on roads has been increasing rapidly. In Australia we now have over twenty million cars for just over twenty-six million people, among the highest rate of car ownership in the world.
We invest a lot in roads that help us rush through, but we fail to account for the true costs. Do we really recognise what it costs us as a society when children can’t move safely around our communities? The authors of Movement have it right: it’s time to think differently about that street outside your front door.
8. What phenomenon does the author point out in paragraph 1?
A. Cars often get stuck on the road. B. Traffic accidents occur frequently.
C. People walk less and drive more. D. Pedestrians fail to follow the rules.
9. What were the Canadian journalist and other campaigners trying to do?
A. Keep their cities livable. B. Promote cultural diversity.
C. Help the needy families. D. Make expressways accessible.
10. What can be inferred about the campaigns in Australia in the late 1960s and 1970s?
A. They boosted the sales of cars. B. They turned out largely ineffective.
C. They won government support. D. They advocated building new parks.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why the Rush? B. What’s Next?
C. Where to Stay? D. Who to Blame?
C 9. A 10. B 11. A

A new groundbreaking study reveals a landmark breakthrough in the field of snakebite treatment. Researchers, led by David Baker from the University of Washington, have designed new proteins — unlike any found in nature — that can inactivate some of the most poisonous components of snake bite toxins (毒素).
Snakebites represent a substantial global health issue, affecting millions of people each year. According to the World Health Organization, over 2 million people suffer from snakebites annually, with more than 100,000 deaths and 300,000 cases of permanent disabilities. Current treatment options, mainly obtained from animal blood, often present drawbacks, including high production costs, limited efficiency, and severe side effects, such as causing shock and breathing difficulties.
In light of these challenges, Baker and his team have made effective use of deep learning tools to develop artificial proteins capable of attaching to and inactivating toxins. The study focuses on a specific group of snake proteins known as three-finger toxins. These toxins often bypass the immune (免疫的) system, making conventional treatments ineffective. Notably, the newly designed proteins provide significant protection against deadly amounts of three-finger toxins in mice, achieving survival rates ranging from 80% to 100%.
By avoiding the lengthy and resource-intensive processes associated with conventional antibody development, this approach could lead to more accessible and affordable treatments. Also, the new proteins are smaller, allowing for greater penetration (渗透) into body systems to quickly inactivate the toxins and reduce damage. The efficiency and speed at which these proteins can be designed and produced using AI indicate a transformative shift in drug discovery processes, especially in resource-limited settings.
While the study’s findings are encouraging, the researchers acknowledge that traditional antitoxins will remain central to snakebite treatment for the near future. The newly created computer-designed antitoxins can be integrated into existing treatment as additions, enhancing the overall effectiveness of established treatments. Meanwhile, scientists believe the new methods employed in this study could be beneficial to tackling other diseases, potentially leading to the emergence of less expensive medicines for various health challenges.
12. Which is a shortcoming of the current snakebite treatments?
A. They mainly rely on animal blood. B. They are effective in certain regions.
C. They can lead to serious health risks. D. They may leave toxins in patients’ bodies.
13. How did Baker’s team deal with the current challenges?
A. By inventing deep learning tools. B. By identifying more snake toxins.
C. By enhancing the immune system. D. By designing AI-generated proteins.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about concerning Baker’s new study?
A. Its advantages. B. Its strategies. C. Its procedures. D. Its limitations.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The existing approaches are hard to change.
B. The conventional treatments are out of date.
C. The new methods might enlighten other treatments.
D. The new antitoxins will be the core of future methods.
C 13. D 14. A 15. C

Tips to Setting Goals
Setting goals is easy but that is just the beginning. After taking the time to identify what your goals are, achieving them is a whole other ball game. ___16___. Here are some effective goal-setting tips on how to achieve life goals to the best of your ability.
Make your goals specific. There’s no point in setting unclear goals that don’t achieve anything specific. Research found that in 90% of studies conducted, specific and challenging goals lead to higher performance than when people set easy goals, “do your best” goals, or no goals at all. It’s important for both you and your employees to have clear and established aims. ___17___.
Make your goals measurable. Once you have a specific goal, it’s important to be able to measure the success or completion of the goal. ___18___, like using scales (刻度) or statistical figures. It just has to be measurable in some sense, so that it is clear when you have reached or are close to reaching your goals.
Make your goals relevant. It is essential that any goals set for teams or individuals are relevant to company-wide aims. ___19___. However, the achievement of individual goals is only really beneficial in the workplace environment and will contribute to company success in some way.
___20___. It’s not productive to set a deadline too far in the future for a simple task, or an unrealistically short deadline for something complex and time-consuming. This common trap may make employees very upset.
A. Make your goals time-limited
B. Make your goals easy to achieve
C. This doesn’t have to be in the traditional sense
D. Of course, individual goal completion is important
E. Working to achieve your goals can be challenging at times
F. Make sure your staff know how their work contributes to the company
G. By doing so, you can avoid setting goals too broad to be put into action
E 17. G 18. C 19. D 20. A

It is + adj.
时间状语at that time指代汉代,为过去时间;主语transportation and communication是两个并列事物,视为复数,因此be动词用were。

Ranking My College Life Essentials
When it comes to the key elements of college life, I rank study first, sleep second and socialize third for solid reasons.
Undoubtedly, study tops the list because college serves as a vital platform where we build up professional knowledge and polish comprehensive abilities for our future. Meanwhile, enough sleep guarantees our physical health and keeps us mentally sharp. It lays a solid foundation for efficient study. Although socializing enriches our campus life and develops our teamwork skills, it is only a supplementary part rather than a main task.
Only by balancing the three aspects reasonably can we embrace a fulfilling college life.

It was a sunny morning when I packed my bags for a business trip. The house was filled with the usual hustle and bustle (熙熙攘攘), but today there was a sense of excitement mixed with a bit of anxiety. This would be the first time I would be leaving my son, Max, behind for a few days. Max, five years old, was used to having me around. Little did he know, today was going to be a day of new experiences and emotions.
As I took out my suitcase, Max entered the room, his eyes wide with curiosity. “Mom, where are you going?” he asked, his voice carrying innocence and some concern. I smiled, “I’ve to go on a trip for work, Max. I’ll be back in a few days.”
Max’s eyes grew even wider, and I could see the look of shock on his face. He had never been apart from me for more than a day, and the concept of me being away was completely new to him. “But, Mom, who will take care of me?” he asked, his voice trembling (颤抖) slightly.
I hugged him tightly, saying, “Dad will be here with you, and Grandma is coming over to help. You’ll have so much fun with them, and I’ll call you every day,” I said, hoping to ease his worries. Max nodded slowly, but I could tell he was still unsure.
As the day went on, I noticed Max staying close to me, watching my every move. He helped me pack, and brought me items he thought I might need, like his favorite toy car and a drawing he made for me. His small gestures touched my heart, and I realized how much he cared.
When it was finally time for me to leave, Max stood by the door, his expression a mix of bravery and sadness. I hugged him one last time and whispered, “I’ll be back before you know it, Max. Be good and remember that I love you.” He nodded, with tears in his eyes.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
As I drove away, I couldn’t help but glance back at the house.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I finally returned home, Max greeted me with the biggest hug ever.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As I drove away, I couldn’t help but glance back at the house. There he was, standing at the window, waving with a small smile on his face. It was a moment that touched my heart, but I knew this experience would be valuable for both of us. During my trip, I called Max every evening. We talked about his day, the fun he was having with Dad and Grandma, and the new things he was learning. Each call seemed to ease his worries a little more, and by the third day, he sounded more confident and happier.
When I finally returned home, Max greeted me with the biggest hug ever. “Mom! You’re back!” he exclaimed, his face lighting up with joy. At that moment, I realized how much he had grown in just a few days. He had faced his fears and come out stronger. This experience taught Max an important lesson about resilience and independence. It showed him that even when things change, he can adapt and thrive. It also reminded me of the importance of developing these qualities in him and helping him become a strong and confident individual.

C
D
